Welcome Everyone-One World One Heart

!

Well,  it's  finally  here.  I  am  so  excited  to  be  a  part  of  this  world-wide  gathering  that  Lisa   is  hosting.  This  is  the  final  year  for  this  event,  and  I'm  so  happy  that  I  have  a  chance  to  be  a  part  of  it.   This  is  such  a  great  way  to  meet  other  artists  that  you  may  never  have  found  otherwise.   So,  it  goes  without  saying--Thank  You  Lisa!!!

So  for  those  of  you  who  have  never  been  here  before,  let  me  introduce  myself.   I'm  Diane  Salter  from  the state  of  Pennsylvania  in  the  US.   I'm  a  mixed  media  artist,  which  means  that  I  like  to  have  fun  with  anything!   I'm  always  up  for  something  new  with  anything  that  involves  color.   Some  of  my  favorite  mediums  are  acrylics,  graphite,  crayons, papers, more papers  (I LOVE  paper!) etc., etc., etc.......

Right  now  at  the  moment,  I've  been  painting  papers  to  use  for  my  artwork.  As  a  matter  of  fact,  I've  been  posting  alot  of  my  papers  on  my  blog,  and  quite  frankly  I  want  to  use  them  now.   I'd  say  that  this  party is  the  most  opportune    way  to  start  cutting,  tearing  and  collaging  with  them.    

I've  decided  to  have  a  gift  for  3  people  who  leave  a  comment  here  on  my  blog--

  I'm  very  attracted  to  mosaics.  And  I  really  like  the  look  I  achieve  when  I  collage  my  papers  like  this  to which  I've  added   these  very  cool  K & Co. borders.  I  like  to  layer  them  to  add  more  interest,  and  when  I  finish,  I  apply  a  gloss  varnish  which  really  makes  the  color  pop.

Each  of  these  pieces  represent  something  that  is  special  to  everyone--in  all  aspects  of  our  life.

Everyone  loves  flowers,  and  I  know  in  this  part  of  the  world,  especially  in  my part  of  the  country,  we  miss   them  terribly.    But  they  also  represent  a  new  beginning  in  growth,  and  eventually  the  buds  turn  into  beautiful  blossoms.  This  is  what  we  all strive  for.  And  you  always  want  to  continue  to  grow--it's  what  makes  life  an  exciting  adventure!

Aahh--the  beautiful  butterfly--another  version  of  growth  and  beauty.  Isn't  it  amazing  how  these  little  jewels  of  nature  start  out.   And  when  they  finally  reach  their  potential  with  all of  their  color,  they  have  wings  to  fly  into  the  world--to  soar  and  explore.   I  love  butterflies!!

And  finally  the  heart.  This  is  what  it's  all  about--One  World  One  Heart.  We  want  to  spread  the  love,  and  the  heart  is  the  universal  symbol  for  the  whole  world--love  of  our  families,  friends  and  life!   So  why  the  timepiece?   Well  time  is  the  one  supply  that  I  can't  buy,  so  I  cherish  my  time  each  and  everyday,  and  am  so  thankful  that  I  have  time  everyday  to  do  what  I  love  most.

I'm  so thankful  for  all  of  you  who  have  visited  my  blog  today,  and  all  you  need  to  do  for  a  chance  to  have  one  of  these  is  to  be  an  active  blogger  and   leave  a  comment  on  this  post  with  your  contact  information.  The  names  will  be  chosen  on  February  17.

A Sneak Peek

 I  JUST  WANTED  TO  UPDATE  THIS  POST--THE  PARTY  DOESN'T  START  UNTIL  MIDNIGHT  TONIGHT,  SO  I'LL BE  BACK  TOMORROW (MONDAY)


If  you  hadn't  noticed  on  my  sidebar,  I  am  participating  in the  One  World  One  Heart  event  this  year.  It  starts  this  Sunday,  and  ends  on  Feb. 17.   This  is  the  first  time  I'll  be  joining  in,  and  this  is  also  the  last  year  that  this  event  will  be  happening.

Lisa  from  A  Whimsical  Bohemian  blog  is  the  one  we  must  thank  for  putting  this  together  for  the  5th  year.   Last  year,  I'm  pretty  sure  she  said  that  there  were  around  1000  participants---all  having  a  giveaway.   Nowhere  but  in  blogland  can  you  do  something  like  this--just  one  big  world-wide  party--so  much  fun!

So  since  I'm  swimming  in  painted  papers  at  the  moment,  I  knew  that  I  had  to  use  some  of  these  for  my  giveaway.   I  really  should  say  that  I'm  drowning  in  them,  not  only painted  ones,  but  scrapbook  papers  too.  I've  been  to  Michael's  (not  good).  Have  you   seen  the  K & Co.  Flora   and Fauna  new  line? and  not  just  the  papers,  but  the  ephemera and  all  of  the  other  little  embellishments  that  go  with  this  line--beautiful!!

A New Painting! and Week 4 of Journaling

Well.....sort  of  a  new  painting.  It  all started  out  with  one  of  the  papers  that  I  painted.  I  liked  it  so  well  that  I  decided  to  mount  the  whole  thing  onto  a  canvas  and  go  from  there,  but  things  weren't  going  well,  and  the  new  painting  is  underneath  this  one,  which  I  would  call  a  new  collage--

Let  me  tell  you  the story  of  how  this  Gypsy  came  about.  Like  I  said  it  all began  with  this  painted  paper--

Very cool--don't  you  think?   Well,  I  put  it  on  my  canvas  and  started  adding  more  details  to it, and I  was  liking  it  even  more.  So  I  decided  to  make  a  new  face  for  it.  She  was  coming  out  very  well  too.....and  then  I  started  painting  her,  and  I  started  not  to  like  her....but  she  was  okay.  But  the  more  I  kept  trying  to  "fix"  her,  the  meaner  looking  she  got....so  I  said...forget  this!  and  I  just  reached  for  a pretty  scrapbook  paper  and  covered  her  and  my  original  painted  paper  ALL  UP!!

So  then  I  figured  I  could  try  some  techniques  that  I've  been  wanting  to  do.  The  first  one  I  did  was  the  gel  transfer  of  a  face  that  I  had  done  in  my  Moleskine  journal  last  year.  I  knew  eventually  I  would  want  to  do  something  with  her.   And  last  year  in  my  workshop  with  Sharon  (BTW, this  is  an  on going  workshop--Faces--All  Norah's--GREAT  class!),  I  learned  how  to  transfer  inkjet  copies  with  gel  medium,  and  ever  since  then  I  wanted  to  try  doing  it  to  one  of  my  faces.  I  just  printed  her  out  in  black  and white,  did  the  transfer,  and  it  worked! 

All  I  did,  was  redefine  her  features  and  hair,  and  let  the  scrapbook  paper  take  care  of  the  rest  of  her  face.   So   where  did  all  of  this  distressed  shabby  texturing  come  from--this  came  as  a  result  of  all  my  other  techniques  that  I  tried  to  do  and  failed  at.  Everytime  it  didn't  work  out,  I  would  just  say--the  heck  with  this,  and then  I  would  cover  it  up,  and  then  I'd  say--ooh,  I  kind  of  like  this.   This  kept  happening--over  and  over--until  I  ended  up  with  all  of  these  layers  and textures.  If  I  was  trying  to  go  for  this  look,  I  probably  couldn't  have  done  it,  and I  Love  it!!

This  is  a  good  lesson  for  me--not  to  give  up!

And  this  week  was  the  final  lesson  for  the Strathmore  workshop  (boy  that  4  weeks  went  by  fast!).  This  was  the  fun  part--the  doodling--whatever  came  to  mind.   Pam  suggested  using  paint  pens.  And  this  is  how  I  started  out--with  my  Sharpie  paint  pens  (black  and  white),  but  the  lines  were  looking  a  little  too clean  for  me,  so  I  decided  to  get  out  my  favorite  doodling  tools--my  brush  tip  pitt  pens.  I  probably  have  every  color  known  to  man.  I  like  these  because  they  don't  dry  instantly,  and  I  can  smudge  them  with  my  finger.  And  when  you   do  this,  they  dry  more  translucent,  so  the  background  comes  through.   Here's  my  finished  page--

Yesterday,  I  was  planning  on finishing  both  of  my  pages.  I  didn't  realize  that  one  page  with  just  the  finishing  touches  would  take  me  2  hours!  It  felt  like  2  minutes.   I  realize  now  that  this  is  my  favorite  part  of  journaling--the  process--not  even  realizing  how  long  you've  been  sitting  and  just  playing--very  therapeutic!   So  now  I  get  to  do  the  page  next  to  it!  And  I  learned  another  little  technique  that  I  know  that  I'll  use  again.   I  painted  with  the  white  paint  pen, and  then  when  it  was  still  wet,  I  wiped  a  little  around  with  a  baby  wipe--really  liked  that!

And  this  is  for  all  of  you  Idol  fans.  What  do  you  think  of  the  new  judges?  They're  much  more  gentler  with  their  constructive  criticism,  don't  you  think?  Randy  is  now  the  mean  one.  It  seems  that  this  year,  the  show  is  focusing  on  the  better singers  as  opposed  to  the  bad  ones...so  far.  I  really  like  Steven  Tyler's  fun  personality,  but  I  miss  sassy  Simon.



More Journaling and EBAY!

I'm  now  in  week  3  of  the Strathmore  journaling  workshop.  My pages  pretty much  look the  same  with  just  more  color  added  in the background  and  little  details.  There's  one  more  week, and  I'll post it when  I'm  finished.  Once  I  start,  I  get real  fussy  with  the details--does  anyone else  have this problem too?

Well,  I  wanted  to  do  another page,  and  I  decided  to  do  the very first  one.  All  the  journal  artists  say to  start in the middle  somewhere,  because of the  fear  of  messing  up  a  brand  new journal, and not to start at the beginning.  But  I wasn't  "afraid", so I made  page #1-

Since  it's  my  journey  into  the journaling world,  I  had to use  the map for the collage elements.  I really liked making my face on the map!

And now  on  to  the  Ebay.  I've  been  cleaning  and  "purging",  but there are some things  that  I  can't  possibly  throw  out,  but yet  have enough  of  these items to last  me  2  lifetimes,  so  I  put  them  up  on Ebay.  Let  me  show  you  what  is  up  for  bid--

I  have  some  vintage  handles  that are  aged  very  nicely, plus  these larger  hinges.

These 2 great vintage magazines that  are  in  remarkably  good  condition--great victorian  images  and ads!

And  how  about  this  fun  lot--all of  it's  included  in  this  cigar  box.  That  book  is  dated  1892!

And  speaking  of  journaling  or  possibly altered  books--here's  a  great  lot  of  children's  board  books. 

Everytime  I  saw  them  this  summer  at  garage  sales,  I  would  get  them---I  could  now  start  a  board  book  library.

And  on  a  side note,  Darla  asked  me  if  I  was  having  problems  with  blogger--you  know  moving  photos  around  or  changing  your  text--well-- haven't  we  all.  Somedays she (Miss Blogger)  can  be  very  disagreeable,  but  she's  nothing  compared  to  MS EBAY--this  lady  is  in  full  PMS mode!  It  took  me  about  2  hours  to  list  these  4  listings.  Alot  of  times  when  I  would  press  continue,  it  would  tell  me  that  the  web  page  was  "expired"--just  a  way  of  saying--start  over and  do  it  all  again!  But  I  didn't  give  up,  and  they're  now  all listed.

I  also  wanted  to  tell  you  all  about  my  latest  purchase.  When  I  was  at  Border's  I  bought  this  setchbook (a  nice 5 x 7  size)  I  have  papers  that  I've  made  sketches  and  ideas  scattered  all  over  the  house.  And  it  was  the  last  straw  when  it  took  me  over  an  hour  to  find  this  sketch  that  I  made  and  put  in  a  place  where  I  could  "find"  it.  So  now  this  book  never  leaves  my  side  with  all  of  my  ideas  in  it.  I  now  have  a  little  black  book--

Textured Papers--A Step-by-Step

So  in  my  last  post  I showed  you  the  2  textured  papers  that  I   made,  and  I'll show  you  how  I  did  them.   Originally,  I  had  this  book  on  making  paste  papers,  which  involved  boiling  water  and  adding  cornstarch.  It  actually  seems  pretty  easy,  but  I  didn't  want  to  make  the  mess,  and  basically  I  just  wanted  the  end  results  to  look  like  the  pics  in  the  book,  so  I  decided  on  an  easier  way.

I  started  out  painting  a  design  on  the  cardstock  paper--

And  then  I  mixed  regular  gel  medium  with  acrylic  paint  and  spread  it  over  the  paper  with  a  palette  knife--a  fairly  thick  layer.

And  then  immediately  took  this  rubber  comb  and  made  my  design  into  it.

I  then  let  it  dry  completely  and  then  just  added  my  layers  of  paint  onto  it.

You  get  great  texture,  and  you  can  use  anything  you  have  handy  to  create  the  texture--a  regular  comb,  a  nail,  skewer,  bottle cap --whatever.

The  main  thing  is  that  every time  you  lift  your  texture  tool  off  of  the  surface,  make  sure  to  wipe  the  gel  off  so  it's  clean  when  you  make  more  designs  in  the  gel.

The  next  paper  started  out  like  this--just  an  acrylic  wash  over  it--

And  I  decided  to  try  it  this  time  with  just  the  gel  (no  paint  added  to  it)  and  then  see  if  it  made  a  difference,  and  I  don't  think  it  did. 

It  eliminates  the  one  step,  and  you  definitely  use  a  lot  less  of  the  paint.   I  really  like  the  way  these  turned  out   and  I  want  to  try  this  technique   on  canvas  or  wood,  but  when  I  do,  I  think  I'll  try  it  with  the  heavy  gel  medium  for  even  more  texture.  To  get  this  result,  you  have  to  use  the  gel  medium,  because  it  dries  clear,  and  the  color  from  underneath  comes  through.

And  here's  another  fun  paper  that  I  did.  I  started  out  with  an  embossed  paper  that  was  white,  or  you  could  use  textured  wallpaper,  and  here's  how  it  ended  up--

Week 2--Making Textured Papers and Journaling

I  am  rediscovering  art  materials  that  I  have,  but  haven't  used  in  a  while,  and  also  others  that  I've  never  used,  and  I  am  very  blissful  right  now!     Let  me start  out  by  showing  a  few  of  my  textured  papers   starting  with  this  one.   I  started  out--putting  an  acrylic  wash  on  very  heavy  cardstock   paper  (Golden  fluid  acrylic-- Aquamarine Blue--Great  color!)  It's  hard  to  see  the  texture,  but  if  you double  click  on  these,  you  can  see  it  better.

 

On  this  one  I  started  out  with   Golden's  Fiber  Paste--it's  almost  like  the  soft  molding  paste,  but  when  it's  dry,  it's  very  fibery  like  paper.  And  it's  very  flexible,  which  is  what  I  wanted  so  that  I  could  cut  it  up   for  collage.

I  used  a  plastic  stencil  for  the  vines  and  flowers.  This  is  just  so  easy  to  do--and  fun.   You  just  lay  down  your  stencil,  and  apply  an  even  layer  of  the  paste  over  it  with  a  palette  knife,  and  then  when  you  lift  it  up,  you  have  your  imprint.   And  the  bottom  right-hand  corner  was just  random  paste  that  I  spread  on  and  then  scribbled  in to...BUT...do  you  see  what  I  see??

Well,  I'll  tell  you  what  I  see--a  Bird--so  I  had  to  pull  it  out  (thanks  Mystele!)

And  the  rest  of  the  paper---well,  you  know  the  rest--just  have  fun  and  add  color,  pencil,  markers--whatever  you  want  until  you're  happy--

I'm  happy!!   I  also  decided  to  put  a  layer  of  Matte  Medium  over it  just  to  add  durability  when  I  use  it.  I  know  that  I'll  be  cutting  out  the  images  for  collage,  and  since  I've  never  done  this  before  with  Fiber  Paste--I  want  to  keep  it  strong.   But  I  have  to  say  that  the  paper  I  use  really  takes  a  licking,  but  keeps  on  ticking.   It  doesn't  matter  how  much water  I  apply,  it  remains  strong.  I  get  it  at  Staples  (office  supply  store)  and  it's  110 lb  weight.  But  you  could  use  watercolor  paper--or  anything  as  long  as  it's  durable.

Wonderful-Wonderful  texture!!   I'll  show  you  how  I  did  these  in  my  next  post.

Okay,  now  on  to  week 2  of  the  Strathmore  journal  workshop  with  Pam  Carriker.  What  she  had  us  do  is  define  and  shade  our  image  with  charcoal  and  over  that  add  oil  pastels--smudging  all  the  way.   Plus  a  little  journaling  and  covering  it  with  a  gesso  wash,  and  then  adding  a  little  more  of  the  oil  pastels.  I  think  the  toughest  thing  for  me  was  the  journaling  part.  I  never  journal  my  thoughts,  but  once  I  started,  I  couldn't  shut up  (kind  of  like  the  way  I  blog  : )

I've  never combined  the  2  together  (charcoal  and  oil  pastels),  but  wow,  do  I  love  the  results--I've  already  learned  something  new  from  journaling  that  I  probably  never  would   have  tried

LOVE  this  effect!

I'm  anxious  to  see  what  week  3  brings!

Painting Papers and Making Necklaces

Let  me  first  say  that  this  time  of  year  is  when  I  am  officially  in  hibernation.   I  don't  have  a  "real"  job,  and  I  HATE  the  cold,   so  I'm  basically  a  recluse.   I  always  hated  January  and  February,  but  more  and  more  every  year,  these  are  fast-becoming  my  favorite  months.   I  can  PLAY!!

When  I  was  at  the  Rock  and  Roll  Hall  of  Fame,  I  saw  this  quote  from  Billy  Joel--

"If you are not doing what you love, you are wasting your time."

Exactly!!  I am  so  fortunate to be able  to do  what  I  love  anytime  I  want,  whenever  I  want.  And  for  those  of  you  who  work  outside  of  your  home,  and  are  not  that  crazy  about  your  job,  just  know  that  you  can  come  home  and  make  time  to  do  something  that  you  love  (no  matter  what  it  is).   It,  without  a  doubt,  makes a big  difference  in  your  life.

So,  getting  back  to  what  I  was  saying--I've  been  playing--painting  papers--just  as  much  fun  as  journal-making.  It's  very  organic--no  need  to  over-analyze,  and  I  found  that  no  matter  how  "ugly"  these  painted  papers  may  appear,  they  ALWAYS  look  very  cool  when  cut  up  and  used  for  collage.  This  is  only  the  start--

I'm  planning  on  making  as  many  color  combinations  as  I  can  so  I  have  a  lot  of  different  choices  when  I  go  to  make  a  piece  of  art--also  I  can  try  out  different  techniques.

And  speaking  of  new  techniques,  I  just  have  to  say--Martha,  Martha,  Martha--Thank  You,  Thank  You,  Thank  You  for  introducing  me  to  these,  these, these!!

--Adirondack  Color  Wash  Sprays.   A  month  or  so  ago,  on  her  blog  and  you  tube  channel,  she  demonstrated   how  she  uses  them.  And  of  course  immediately  I had  to  run  to  my  nearest  online  store  and  purchase  them.  But  I  haven't  done  anything  with  them  until  now.

Here's  my  first  attempt--

I  love  it,  and  if  you  want  to  see  how  it's  really  done,  you  can  go  HERE  (part 1)  and  HERE  (part  2)  and  you  can  watch  her  do  her  magic.  She  uses  this  technique  for  her  journal  pages  and  then  she  adds  her  mixed  media  art  and   her  expert  calligraphy  work--sheer  perfection!   And  Martha,  if  you're  reading  this,  I  love  the  cool  tip  with  the  paper  towel  roll.   And  if  you  you're  all  wondering  what  I'm  talking  about,  go  watch  the  videos.

PLUS........I've  been  busy  making  more  necklaces  for  my  Etsy  shop.   At  my  last  craft  show  I  sold  two  that  I  really  liked  alot,  so  I  made  2  more  with  the  same  beads  and  the  pendants  that  Kelly  made  for  me.

So, I'm going to go now and play, but one more thing---a couple of posts ago, I mentioned that I could be on  a Hoarder's episode.  Well, if you get the A & E  network and watch this show, just before it is Intervention, and you might just be seeing me on this show too.   Please..........I can't stop eating these damn Christmas cookies!! I made a ton (on purpose) and I've given quite a few away, but I still have some left.   And even though they're a bit stale (to say the least), I still can't stop eating them!

I  need  an  intervention.....

I Am Journaling This Year!

So  I  joined  the  Strathmore  Online  Workshop  ning  group  and  there  are  3  free  workshops  there.   They  run  for  4  weeks,  and  the  first  one  started  last  Saturday.   I  bought  the  journal--

Let  me  tell  you  about  this  journal!   It's  a  big  9 x 12  size,  and  it's  140lb  watercolor  paper  (nice  thick  durable  pages)--finally,  a  journal  designed  for  any  type  of  mess that  you  want  to  put  into  it.   I  really  tried  to  journal  last  year  and  did  start,  but  never  stuck  with  it--this  year  I  am!   And  there's  only  44  pages--I  know  I  can  do  it.

So  the  first  workshop  is  being  taught  by  Pam  Carriker--Pam  Carriker--how  can  you  not  love  her!!   The  more  of  her  teaching  videos  I  see  on  you  tube  and  the  more  I  read  her  articles  in  the  different  Somerset  publications,  the  bigger  fan  I  become  of  hers'.  I  pre-ordered  her  new  book  on  Amazon  months  ago  and  I  can't  wait  to  see  it--I  think  in  the  Spring  sometime.

In  lesson  1,  the  first  thing  she  has  us  do  is  use  images  of  our  old  journal  pages,  cut  them  up,   and  then  collage  them  onto  the  page.  Well,  since  I  never  really  had  a  journal,  I  just  used  images  of  my  art.  This  was  fun  and  here's  where  I  started--

I  found  these  3  art  pieces  that  I  made  last  year,  and  decided  just  to  use  these  with  the  purples,  golds,  and  greens,   And  the  face  is  the  face  from  my  angel  that  I  painted  a  couple  months  ago.  Whenever  I  sketch  faces  that  I  really  like,  I  always  save  them  on  my  computer  for  future  reference  to  see  how  I  did  them,  or  just  to  look  at  them,  with  nothing  else  in  mind.  This  was  the  perfect opportunity  to  use  this  face  in  another  piece  of  art.

And  I  was  having so  much  fun,  that  I  decided  to keep  journaling  this  way  on  the  page  right  next  to  it--

I  did  this  really  fast--didn't  overthink  it--just  did  it.   And  now  I  know  why  you  guys  like  doing  this  so  much--ideas  come  to  you  and  since  it's  your  journal,  you  can  just  go  for  the  idea,  and  if  it  doesn't  work  out,  then  no  big  deal.   I  know,  I  know--this  is  how  we  teach  ourselves. 

Well,  I  wanted  to  do more  with  it,  but  I've  decided  to  work  along  with  Pam  for  the  next  3  weeks,  because  with  each  lesson,  we  will  be  adding  on  to  this  spread--I'll  keep  you  posted. 

So  if  you  haven't  been  there--go  check  it  out--there  are  already  a  large  group  of  very  talented  artists  there.  And  I've  met  some  new  ladies--one  of  my  new  friends  is  Diane  Salter--isn't  that  fun!!
