Every year at the beginning, I always make a commitment to start journaling--I should just re-post my blog post from last year and the year before. I always have good intentions and then by February--it falls by the wayside. But when I think of it, when I paint my papers to put in my artwork, it's very much like journaling.
I stuck with black, white, and red--colors that I normally don't use a lot in this combination, but just like art journaling--it's trying different things to see how you like them, and I really like these 3 together. It's also fun, just like journaling, to fool around with different mediums--
This is molding paste that I added black paint to--so now I have a textured paper to use. It's a great effect to add the watery acrylic wash over the paste.
Just like journaling--it's fun and always good to play!
AND....since January will be here in a couple of days, I know what that means--time to get out my journal that I started last year, and said that I was going to complete in 2011...........right. Well, anyway, it's the Strathmore Visual Journal, which is great for any medium, and I'm going to continue on with it in my FREE Strathmore Online Class with Traci Bautista. Last year it was with Pam Carriker, and I picked up some great techniques with her class. And also Life Book. I'm sure most everyone knows about this class--well worth it with 14 artists and Tam for the entire year, and IF I can keep up with it--it will be a complete journal by the end of the year. I'm ready for both of the journaling classes and joining in with everyone.
I do want to say that I have a sketchbook that doesn't leave my side, and it's actually just about filled. I make it a regular practice to sketch faces--very relaxing for me.......so I guess you could say that I DO journal!

I love this color combination you've got going. Really a good combo for the upcoming Valentines Day, maybe you subconsciously did it with V Day in mind ;)
Did you have a large stencil for the molding paste?
I'm not a journaler. I think that I want to be, but I just don't do it. I do use my sketch book for just that, sketching so at least it's something.
love your papers, diane....i do the same with journaling, i start and the get bored with the book and need to get to slopping paint around....like you, i have many faces that i have sketched almost every day......and like you (again), i am doing the stratmore classes....happy new year to you.....

Haha..why do we set goals we know we may never keep? Maybe because the hope and vision seem enough to make us happy..I imagine a finished journal with wonderful and colorful, meaningful pages..suitable for publishing..haha again..but worth a try! I love your pages and I will try to take the free class. I am hoping to have a little workshop of my own locally and more ideas are always fun!
You are exactly right Diane - you DO journal! I had that same angst for a while, thinking I should journal. Then one day I realized that my altered quote book is really my form of journaling. That is the place where I try out ideas and just play - just for me. I don't think journaling necessarily has to be structured and filled with profound thoughts - whew, good thing! Maybe you should scan your papers and glue them into your journal with a simple date. A chronical of your art explorations.
You certainly do journal and beautifully I might add. It's always fun to be a little non-conformist :-) Maybe I'll see you around Traci's class, I had signed up as well.

yes, i think sketchbooks count. journaling is a personal adventure, whether it is done with a pencil, words, drawings or paint. I think doing what feels right each moment of our life counts. your papers are gorgeous and i can only imagine you will do wonderful things with them!

Hi Diane! So many great things in this post. I love your papers - the black in the modeling paste looks fantastic. I need to try that. My "2011 Art Journal" is going to carry on into 2012 too. :) I just got a Visual Journal for Christmas so I am looking forward to using it. I just stopped making New Year commitments because I am like you, by February they are long gone and forgotten. I do LOVE the papers you have made and to me that is art journaling. I know that my thoughts and mood go into the sketching and drawing I do so I consider each page a piece of my art journal :) It sounds good anyway...

I have tried journaling before as well, but finally realized that I'm not good at it. I do better if I just randomly draw things when I feel inspired. I used to keep a nature journal and that was much easier. You create so many gorgeous things, I think that is your form of journaling. Happy New Year! Hope it is filled with many blessings!

I never manage to journal properly either, I do it for a month or so then stop again until months later, then I always feel the need to start over again lol, it's a never ending circle for me.

All this colour and texture is just a joy to me, whatever you do with the result! Has it ever occurred to you to just add occasional words on a strip - I use a typewriter font on my computer? As long as it adds to the meaning for you, then its a journal, or indeed anything else you want to call it.
oh, you often hit a cord with not just me, probably a lot of us. i have lots of journals unfilled-but i love that, because i pick one randomly off the shelf and peruse old stuff and add new stuff...so fun! your papers are absolutely marvelous...i love seeing when others try out new ideas instead of just my own new ideas! it's close to walking around a table with you and gabbing away at trials and errors...and ooooh how wonderful the errors that become wonderful insights and better than we could have imagined!!! happy new year with much love and creative art experiences my friend! xo
