Baseball Nut..... (and Somerset has made me happy again--they published me again!)

Okay--Baseball Nut--that's  the  color  this  week  at  Kristin's  Summer  of  Color.   So  for  those  of  you  who  don't  know  what  kind  this  is  (like  me)--it's  Baskin  Robbins'  vanilla  ice  cream  with  raspberry  swirls  and  lots  of  cashews--sounds  good  to  me!

So  I  started  gathering  up  supplies  from  my  art  room--

.....some  scrapbook  papers,  and  paint,  and  some  of  my  sketched  faces  printed  out  on  sheet  music....and  more  gathering.....

Actually  when  I  took  this  photo,  I  was  half-way  finished  with  my  pieces,  and  I  had  a  plan  in  mind.   I  have  to  admit--I  have  a  problem  with  supplies--I  need  everything  that  I  see  out  there--I  can't  help  myself--but  on  the  other  hand   I  never  have  a  problem  when  it  comes  to  looking  for  those  special  touches--because  I  have  everything--so  I  guess  that's  a  good  thing....right??

All  of  these  prompts  helped  me  make  these  2  pieces  on  6 x6  canvases--

My  Baseball  Nut  sundaes  complete  with  the  "cherries"  on  top...

....not  as  delicious  as  the  actual  ice  cream--but  a  lot  less  fattening!

Summer of Color-Week 2-Mint Chocolate Chip!

........one  of  my  favorite  flavors  of  ice  cream,   and  also  a  wonderful  color  combination  to  work  with  in  your  art--you  can't  go  wrong.   This  is  the  color/flavor  for  this  week  for  Kristin's  Summer  of  Color. 

So  for  this  prompt  I  decided  to  make  some  art  with  my  latest  art  technique  that  I've  learned  this  year.   I've  always  loved  this  type  of  paper  art,  but  never  tried  my  hand  at  it  until  I  took  Christy  Thomlinson's  workshop  She  Had  Three  Hearts.    Junelle  Jacobsen  was  a  guest  teacher  for  one  of  the  weeks  and  she  demonstrated  this  technique--rolled  paper  art,  and  I've  been  hooked  ever  since.   I  made  me  some  mint  chocolate  chip  rolls  with  a  little  bit  of  strawberry  ice  cream  added  to  the  mix---

I  painted  up  some  vintage  dictionary  pages---I  like  using  these  because  they're  so  thin,  and  roll  very  easily---but  you  can  use  any  type  of  paper.

I  then  adhered  them  on  to  a  6 x 12  gallery  canvas--

So   basically,  they  became  part  of  my  background along  with  the  collaged  paper  and  lace.   I  knew  that  I  wanted  something  in  the  center  for  my  focal  point,  which  leads  me  to  my  latest  journal  girl--

LOVED  the  way  she  turned  out,  and  she  was  perfect  for  what  I  had  in  mind.   I  reduced  the  size  of  her  on  my  photo  program,  then  printed   her  out  in  black  and  white  on  a  dictionary  page,    and  then  adhered   her  on  to  a  wooden  heart--

 

....and  then  I  just  repainted  her  in  those  yummy  mint  chocolate  chip  colors  and  a  touch  of  strawberry  ice  cream!

Summer of Color 2012

It's  here   again--the  Summer  of  Color  hosted by  Kristin  of  Twinkle  Twinkle.   I  had  so  much  fun  with  this  weekly  color  prompt  challenge  last  year,  and  I'm  so  glad  that  she  decided  to  do  it  again.   And  this  year  it's  all  about  ice  cream--like  for   instance,  the  color  this  week  is  rainbow  sherbet---the  flavors  of  raspberry  and  orange  with  a  little  lemon  thrown  into  the  mix--very  very  yummy!

And  I  knew  that  I  wanted  to  work  with  papers  for  this  one,  but  I  didn't  have  a  lot  in  these  colors,  so  I  just  had  to  paint  some.....

....if  you've  never  done  this  before--try  it--it's  a  great  way  to  try  different  techniques,  and  if  you  really  don't  like  what  you've  done,  toss  it  (but  don't,  because  any  painted paper  cut  up  for  collage  always  looks  cool).

Okay,  I  decided  to  use  these  for  the  same  type  of  project  that  I  started  out  with  last  year--a  box  of  course.

If  you've  never  been  here  before---this  is  one  of  my  loves--boxes,  and  if  you  have  been  here  before,  then  you  already  know  this.   My  favorite  part  is  adding  all  of  the  details..

I  always  think  of  the  lid  as  a  separate  piece  of  art,  like  a  canvas--you  know,  something  that  could  be  hung  on  a  wall.    And  I  never  forget  about  the  inside  of  it  either....

But  this  year,  I  thought,  Hey--why  stop  at  just  one  box---I'll  make  another  one!

I   really  love  this  color  combo,  and  one  that  I  rarely  use,  but  thanks  to  Kristin,  I  will.   This  is  why  I  like  these  weekly  color  prompts--you'll  discover  so  much  more  when  you  restrict  yourself  to  colors  that  sometimes  you  never  would  have  considered,  which  usually  end  up  being  part  of  your  permanent  color  palette.

Back To Play

Most  people  will  say  they  have  to  go  back  to  work  after  a  little  vacation,  but  this  isn't  work  for  me--it's  always  playtime.   And  this  is  the  time  of  the  year  when  I  get  into  serious  play  mode.   Next  month  my  show  season  starts  up--so  I've  been  getting  busy. 

Last  week  for  the  Memorial  Day  holiday  we  went  to  visit  our  son  in  New  York  City--always  a  fun,  but  exhausting  time.   We  wanted  to  go  when  it  wasn't  too  hot  or  too  cold--everyday  was  close  to  90  degrees  when  we  went  this  time...............so  I  guess  that  plan  didn't  work  out  too  well,  but  it  was  still  a  good  time.   

Our  son  always  takes  us  around  to  places  that  we've  never  been  before,  but  one  place  that  I  always  go  back  to  is  a  store--The  Ink  Pad--a  VERY  cool  stamp  (and  more)  store--

.....some  of  my  purchases--the  Lynne  Perrella  stamps  I'm  swooning  over.....and  I've  been  using  them  in  my  new  pieces  that  I've  just  made--

These   are  on  6 x 6  gallery  canvases--they're  very  popular  and  affordable....

                                                                                                    

.....I  really  like  working  with  these  deep  edge  canvases  too--they  add  so  much  more  to  the  piece...

.....this  is  a  good  start---there's  more  to  come...

Another  place  that  I  want  to  mention  that  we  went  to  when  we  were  there  was  a  flea  market  in  Brooklyn--that  was  fun..  and  just  like  any  other  flea  market--pretty  reasonable  prices  and  lots  of  haggling....

I  found  lots  more  too,  but  without  a  car,  it  was  impossible.   You  see  the  watch  and  clock  parts,  the  keys,  and  the  little  bulbs  and  those  tin  type  photos (I  think  that's  what  they  are)?  I  found  these  all  at  one  booth--they  had  hundreds  of  items  like  this--I  would  have  been  happy  if  this  was  the  only  booth  there!

And  there's  one  more  place  that  I  have  to  mention--the  9/11  Memorial.   It's  pretty  hard  to  describe  the  feeling  when  you're  there  or  even  capture  a  photo  to  explain--

This  is  one  of  the  two  Memorial  Pools  there.   Each  one  is  placed  where  the  towers  were.    They  are  the  exact  size  of  the  tower  bases--if  you  look  at  the  upper  area  of  this  photo,  you  can  see  the  people  standing  there.   This  gives  you  an idea  of  how  large  these  are  and  the  magnitude  of  this  tragedy.   There's  a  30  foot  waterfall  inside  of  the  pools   that  falls  into  a  void  and  you  can  see  the  name  of  one  of  the  victims  in  the  photo  here.   All  of  the  names  of  the  victims  from  the  9/11  attacks  and  the  1993  World  Trade  Center  attack  are  inscribed  around the  entire  border  of  the  pools.    It's  a  beautiful  memorial,  and  if  you  ever  get  a  chance--to  go  visit.
