More Angel Love and a Pink Flamingo

Okay  so  at  the  end  of  this  week  I'm  off  for  my  final  show  of  the  season,  and  I  have  to  say  that  I'll   be  glad--I  am  burnt  out!!   I  had  to  make  one  more  angel  though--

And  I  had  one  more  chair  left,  and  that's  where  I  put  her--

But.... I  also  made  her  into  a  piece  of  wall art--

With  an   up-cycled   $1.00  frame  that  I  spray-painted  copper.  A  very  easy  peasy  with  a  lemon  squeezy!

And  remember  my  first  angel  that  started  it  all  that  I  showed  you  here?   Well,  she  was  meant  to  go  here--

I  love  my  little  group  of  angels  that  I'm  taking  with  me!

So  what  about  the  pink  flamingo?   Well   on  Kathy's  blog  Kluless,  she  mentioned  that  she  loved  flamingos  and  that  she  had  a  collection  of  them.   I  like  flamingos  too,  but  I  don't  really  collect  them,  but  I  do  have  a  couple,  and  one  in  particular  that  I  bought  years  ago  at  a  craft  fair  that  I  wanted  to  show  her.  I  really like  it.   So  Kathy--here's  my  favorite  pink  flamingo  (although  it's  a  bit  faded  with age)

Enough With the Boxes Already....and....Wanda.....I Hope You're Reading This!

I  know--but  I  just  had  to  show  you  these  boxes!   First  of  all,  is  this  not  THEE  coolest  cigar  box?!

I've  never  seen  one  like  this  before.  It's  about  5  inches  at  the  widest  point,  but  then  it  narrows  down  to  about  3 1/2  inches,  and  it's  just  as  deep.   My  husband  found  it  at  the  tobacco  store  for  $1.00!   One  dollar  I  tell  you!   And  look  how  it  turned  out--

I  decided  to  keep  the  original  trim  on  it--it  went  great  with  the  images  that  I  used.

I  used  prints  of  my own  art  combined  with  scrapbook  paper,  and  in  case  you  missed  it,   I  talk  about  how  I  do  this  here.

And  then  when  I  was  in  Tennessee  this  summer  I  found  these--

These  porcelain  doorknobs  for  just  $2.00  each  and  a  couple  of  these  also--

These  are  also  porcelain,  and  I'm  99%  sure  that  these  are  the  bases  for  the  hot  and  cold  faucets  that  were  on  the  older  sinks.   If  I'm  wrong,  let  me  know.  Well  anyway,  when  I  saw  this,  I  immediately  thought  feet!

But  instead  of  feet,  it's  more  of  a  pedestal  stand--cool!

And  the  doorknob  was  the  perfect  match  for  it.   Wouldn't  this  be  so  cute  in  a  bathroom?   I  have  to  admit  that  I  have  a  hidden  motive  for  showing  these  boxes.  My  plan  is,  in  the  next  few  weeks,  to  open  up  an  Etsy  store,  and  if  all  goes  well,  I'd  like  to  sell  my  boxes  on  Etsy,  among  other  things.  It   doesn't  take  much  to  get  me  excited  and  these  make  me  very  happy!

P.S.   Okay,  I'm  going  to  sneak  one  more  in  here,  because  I  really  LOVE  how  this  one  turned  out.  Keeping  with  the  pedestal  stand--I  had  this  wood  finial  that  I  found  at  a  craft  store  ages  ago,  so  I  decided  to  do  it  again--

What  I  love  most  about  this  one  are  the  images  I  found  at  the  Etsy  store  Charmed  Memory Collage.  They're  all   instant  download  collage  sheets,  and  these  ones  were  ATC  size,  but  she  also  offers  inchie  sizes  and  domino sizes  plus  other  sizes.   Quite  honestly,  I  didn't  look  at  everything  in  the  shop.  I  found  these  instantly,  but  I  will be  going  back--check  out  this  store  if  you  like  vintage  shabby.   These  are  shabby roses  on  sheet  music,  and  one  of  them  was  called  "Gypsy  Love  Song".  So  I  was  looking  at  my  Garden  Girl,  and  I  thought--she  really  looks  more  like  a  gypsy  to  me  (can  gypsies  have  blonde  hair?)

I've  been  using  images  of  my  girls  so  much,  that  I  think  they're  starting  to  talk  to  me.  So  I  think  my  Garden  Girl  is  now  going  to  be  referred  to  as  my  Gypsy  Girl  with  Blonde  hair  (all natural, of  course).

Now  I  have  another  plug  here--how  I  found  out  about  this  Etsy  store.  Well,  I  joined  Zinnia's   ning  group  Roses  on  My  Table.  It's  free  to  join  and  there  are  trade  and  swap  groups  there  that  are  also  free.  I   also  joined  her  R.A.I.L  group  there.  It's  only  $35.00  for  the  year,  and  each  month  she  has  a  new  project  with  downloadable  videos.  Last  month  it  was  domino  pendant  necklaces  and  this  coming  month  is  a  Memory  Keeper's  Treasure  Box  starting  out  with  a  plain  wood  craft  box--right  up  my  alley.   And  her  style  is  my  style.  She  likes  to  use  vintage  images,  stained  lace  and  all  the  froo-froo (sp?)  that  goes  with  it.  So,  go  check  out  this  ning  group--remember,  it's  free  to  join.

P.S.  P.S.   I  almost  forgot--Wanda!--I  like  Wanda--she's  such  a  fun  lady!!   If  you're  not  familiar  with  Wanda  and  her  blog,  hop  on  over  and  pay  her  a  visit.   She   posts  the  most  beautiful  sunsets  and  sunrises  or  just  the  sky  on  her  blog,  not  to  mention  her  excellent  art.  So  it  started  me  thinking.  I  never  look  at  the  sky,  or  anything  outside  for  that  matter  when  I'm  so  busy  like  this.  Even  when  I'm  out  and  about  hurrying  and  scurrying--I  don't  even  look  up!   So  Wanda.......this  is  for  you-- 

Unfortunately?  we've  been  having  beautiful  Fall weather  here  for  the  last  couple  of  days,  and  this  is  how  our  skies  have  been  starting  and  ending.  My  point  is---Thank  you  Wanda  for  reminding  me  to  stop  and  smell  the  roses!

Okay....that's  it,  I'm  done  now,  or  like  I  say  to  my  daughter  when  I'm   finished  talking  to  her  on  the  phone---Okay, I'm  gonna  hang  up  now....Bye.

My Therapy

So  what  is  my  therapy?   Well,  I'll  tell  you.  Last  year  I  made  this  one  piece  that  was  one  of  my  favorites,  and  I'm  happy  to  say  that  it  went  home  with  a  very  appreciative  customer.   So  I  decided  to recreate  it.    I  started  out  with  one  of   my  favorite  surfaces--a  discarded  cupboard  door  that  I'm  sure  was  headed  for  the  trash  if  I  hadn't  rescued  it--

This  is  nice  and  long  and  skinny--about  9 x 30  inches--pretty  much  the  same  size  that  I  used  last  year.

And  then  I  did  some  metal  embossing--

This  is  my  version  of  doodling--very  therapeutic  to  me--



And  then  for  the  frame  work  of  the  door  I  had  this  great  gold  embossed  paper  that  I  purchased  from   paperarts.com  and  I  painted  it  with  a  green  metallic  paint  and  wiped  some  of  it  off.   It's  great  how  the  color  stays  in  the  embossed  parts  of  the  paper. 

When  I  seal  it  with  the  gloss  varnish,  it  has  the  appearance  of  stained  glass.   And  no  matter  how  many  times  I  do  these  doors,  I  can  never  get  over  the  transformation!

                                                            

 

 

And another  form  of  therapy  for  me,  I  found,  is  my  new  discovery--making  these  necklaces,  and  I'm  getting  a  little  creative--

 

Look at this--I made a double-stranded one! And I've found that there are many possibilities in just linking beads--

And  I've  barely  scratched  the  surface!

First  of  all--you  guys--Thank  You--all  of  you.  I  knew  if  I  asked  for  help,  I'd  get  it.   What  I've  done  is  make  a  jewelry  folder  in  my  computer  and  I've  bookmarked  all  of  the  links  that  everyone  has  told  me  about.   I  bet  you  can  guess  what  my  winter  project  is  this  year!

I've  had  to  put  my  "jewelry  making"  on  the  back  burner  for  a  bit  (but  not  for  long).  I  still  need  to  get  back  to  my  "day  job",  because  I  have  ONE  more  show  to  go.  I  must  say,  that  I  enjoy  this,  but  next  year--easing  up  on  the  show  circuit.  I  completely  missed  Fall  this  year---when  we  didn't  have  the  gloomy  days,  the  weather  here  was  beautiful--at  least  I  think  it  was--I  couldn't  really enjoy  it,  because  I  was  too  busy  here  to  even  get  out.

Oh  well--about  the  post,  and  what  I've  been  doing.  In   keeping  with  the  style  of  the  Santa  that  I  showed  you  here,  and  the  Snowman  that  I  showed  you  here,  I  made  another  angel--

I  was  struggling  with  her  at  first,  but  then  I  just  listened  to  my  own  advice,  and  let  her  help  me,  and  everything  just  came  together--

I  just  love  to  use  collage  and  lots  of  texture  when  I  make  pieces--even  if  I  try  not  to.  I  guess you  should  do  what  appeals  to  you  the  most--right?

So  in  the  end---it  all  came  together--

This  is  fairly  large--about  24  inches  long,  and  no  matter  how  many I  took, I  just  didn't  like  the  photos--but  trust  me---it's  better  in  person.  And  right  now,  I'm  working  on  another  angel  type--a  little  bit  different  medium.   I  really  do  enjoy  making  angels!

Jewelry Designs and Techniques Help....plus....Highlights From My Halloween Party

Okay  I've  been  bitten  by  the  jewelry  bug.  I'm  becoming  a  little  obsessed  with  making  these  necklaces.  All   I  really  know  what  to  do  right  now  is  linking  beads  together,  and  I'm  really  having   fun,  but  I  know  me,  and  I  know  that  I'll want to  learn  more,  because  there's  so  much  you  can  do  with  jewelry.  But  for  now I'm  just  happy  linking  beads  together.

And  I'm  also  becoming  a  bit  obsessed  with  the  beads,  like  these  very  cool  ceramic  ones,  or  these  glass ones--


















                         I  really  like  these  wire  wrapped  glass  beads--

But  I  don't  want  to  purchase  them  already  wire  wrapped  like  I  did.  I  want  to  learn  how  to  do  the  wire  wrapping,  and  any  other  technique  that  you  can  do  with  jewelry  making.  So  I'm  asking  any  jewelry  designer  out  there  who's  reading  this  if  they  can  tell  me  of  any  good  sites  that  I  can  go  to.  Or  any  online  groups,  or  classes  or  instructional  DVDs,  books  or  magazines  (love those)  that  are  for  beginners,  because  I  want  to  learn,  and  I  don't  have any  idea  where  to  start.   Almost  like  when  I  just  started  learning  about  Mixed  Media--a  bit  overwhelming  at  first.  So  I'll  take  any  advice  or  help  that  you  can  give  me!!

I  also  want  to  share  with  everyone  photos  from   my  Halloween  party  last  night.  I  always  have  a  party  every  year,  and  it's  become  quite  popular  around  here.  I'll   show  you  some  of  my  guests--they  came  early  to  help  me  decorate.

Jason  Voorhees--some  of  you  might  know  him--you  don't  really  want  to  get  on  his  bad side.
And  then  there  was  Hannibal  Lecter  who  came  early.   We  had  to  keep  him  in  restraints  because he  tends  to  get  out  of  hand  at  times.

                                                                                        This  is  Jigsaw's  assistant--Jigsaw  couldn't  make  it  because  he's  not  alive  anymore.  For  those  of  you  who  aren't  familiar  with  him--he's  from  the  Saw  movies  in  which  I'm  a  BIG  fan  of. 

I  also  invited  my  son  Nick  but  he  couldn't  make  it,  and  this  is  the  main  reason  why  I'm  posting  about  my  party.  Nick  always  has  a  good  time,  and  I  didn't  want  him  to  miss  out  so  this  was  the  next  best  thing

And  then  there  was  the  Pumpkin  man--

So  let  me  explain  why  he's  called  the  Pumpkin  man.  Years  ago  when  I  first  started  having  these  parties,  nobody  ever  came  except  for  him,  but  back  then  he  always  had  a  Jack-o-Lantern  mask  on.  And  we  never  did  catch  his  name,  so  we  always  just  call   him  the  Pumpkin  man.  He's  come  every  year.   My  Halloween  party  wouldn't  be  the  same  without  him--kind  of  like  the  red  felt  stockings  with  the  glitter  names  on  them  at  Christmas  time--right  Nick?  ; )

Another  regular  is  the  lady  in  white--

She  almost  couldn't  make  it  this  year,  because  she  couldn't  find  a  sitter  for  her  kids,  but  I  told  her  just  to  bring  them  along-

Arent'  they  adorable?   They  really  make  me  wish  for  grandchildren  of  my own!

We  always  have  some  party  crashers  every  year  too--

Ricky  Bobby  and  his  wife,  but  they  didn't  stay  for  very  long.  They  didn't  fit  in--AT--ALL!

So  we  did  some  decorating--

Oh  yeah---and  Michael  Myers  handed  out  candy--

He  hands  out  candy  every   year---he  loves  it.

All  in  all  we  had  a  good  time--the  party  did  get  a  little  out  of  hand--

Whats  that  creepy  white  mist?--I  have  no  idea!

 

I  wish  you  all could  have  come--it's  always  a  fun  party--maybe  next  year!

Branching Out

Back   in  June  Kelly (Kelly Berkey  Designs  blog)  had  sent  me  a  pendant  necklace  as  a  gift  to  me.   She  wanted  to  thank  me  for  helping  her  with  some   mixed   media  techniques  that  she  wanted  to try.   She  sent  me  2  actually,  and  they were  of  my  art.  I  was  so  impressed  by  the  workmanship  of  them,  that  I  decided  to  order  some  more  from  her  so  I  could  try  my  hand  at  jewelry.  I  want  to  make  necklaces  with  them  and  offer  them  for  sale  at  my  last  show  in  November.

I  ordered  3  different  sets--by that  I  mean  they're  double-sided,  so  I  emailed  her  6  different  images  for  3  different  pendants  (4  of  each  set).   I  was  so  happy   with  these  when  I  got  them--

They're  really  much  better  in  person.  This  photo  just  doesn't  do  them  justice!  She  offers these  pendants  to  anyone--she  has  ones  with  her  ladies  or  you  can   personalize  them  with  your  own  art  or  personal  photos  or  even  tiny  snippets  of  personal  items  that  have  sentimental  meaning  to  you.   You  can  go  to  her  Etsy  shop  and  get  all  the  details.

Now  I   know  nothing  about  jewelry  making--nothing!   But  my  daughter  Jen  (the   marathon   runner)  does.  In  her  spare  time  she  likes  making  jewelry  for  herself.  She's  very  good  at  it,  but  never  has  much  time--she  has  a  very  demanding  job,  but  she  did  say  that  she  would  help  me.  So  this  weekend  was  my  first  lesson--the  very  basics--and  I  mean  1st  grade  basic--just  to  get  me  started.  She  didn't  have  much  time  as  she  was  getting  ready to  go   out  of  town  this  week  for  her  work.  So  on  Monday  I  made  my  first  necklace--it  took  me  all  night  long!   As  a  matter  of  fact  when  my  husband  came  home  from  work  at  11:15  at  night  (I'm  usually  in  bed  by  9:30  or  10),  I  was  still  working  away  at  it,  and  I  told  him  that  I  didn't  care  how  long  it  took,  I  was  going  to  finish  that  damn  necklace.  It  was  after  midnight  when  I  finished.   The  next  day  I  felt  like  I  was  partying  all  night---just  can't  bounce   back  like   I  use  to!

So  you're  probably  thinking  I've  made  these  intricate  amazing  necklaces--well,  not  quite,  but  I  think  they  can  pass  as  jewelry.

Do  you  think  these  will   pass  as  legitimate  jewelry--will  I  fool  the  shoppers  into  thinking  that  I  know  what  I'm  doing,  because  I'm  kind  of  just  figuring  this  out  along  the  way.  I  need  other  people's  input--I'm  at  the  stage  right  now  where  I've   been  looking  at   them  so  much  that  I  don't  even  know  anymore.  I  just  want  to  say,  that  I am  in  awe  of  all  you  jewelry  artists  out  there--there  really  is  a  lot  of  work  involved.

So  I  have  10  more  to  go,  and  Jen  is  coming  over  next  week  for  my  2nd  lesson,  and  she's  going  to  show  me  some  of  her  more  intricate  necklaces  that  she's  made---hopefully  I  can  catch  on.

And  speaking  of  Jen,  a  lot  of  you  who  have  been  reading  my  blog  knows  about  her   little  boy,  my  grandson,  but  for  the  new  readers--yes  I  have  a  grandson.  His  name  is  Bob.

Don't   let  his  looks  fool  you--he's  my  grandson!  He  came  over  with  Jen  for  a  visit.  I  don't  get  to  see  him  that often,  so  this  was  a  treat.  See  that  worried  look  on  his  face?  Whenever  he  comes  over,  I  think  he  thinks  that's  he's  not  going  back  home.  He  loves  us,  but  after  a  few  hours,  he  wants  to  leave.

And  one  more  thing--I'm  glad  that  these  necklaces  are  keeping  me  up  at  night.  I  need  that  right  now,  because  I'm  afraid  to  go  to  bed  before  my  husband  gets  home.  I  went  to  see  Paranormal  Activity  2  yesterday,  and  I  knew, like  the  first  movie,  that  it  was  going  to  scare  me,  which  it  did.  However,  it  wasn't   quite  as  scary,   and  it  ties into  the  first  movie--so  now there's  more  of  a  storyline  and  explanation  of  why  this  paranormal  activity   is  happening  to  these  people.  But  they  both  still scared  the heck  out  of  me!
