With Help From Jane and Inspiration From Jen

I'm  sure everyone knows Grittyjane--she is such a talented artist.  And she's also very generous in sharing her techniques with us through  her  tutorials.  Her one tutorial is prints on wood, which is basically what I've been doing, but her tutorial  (for only 10 dollars, I might add) has some helpful tips in it--it's well worth the price.

And the inspiration is from Jen, my artist friend that I talked about on this post.  Her website is
p.s. enjoy your life, and on it she has her wood block prints, and that was my inspiration.  Her's are on  3 x 4 blocks that she cut from a 2 x 4.  So I decided to make my prints on blocks too--thanks again Jen for inspiring (I saw her at Fairport too!)  I wanted to tell her what I was doing, because I would have never thought of doing this.  Instead of getting a 2 x 4 board,  I decided on  a 2 x 6 one, and cut them up so that they would be 4 x 6 blocks. So for about $6.00, I was able to get 24 little blocks.

And THEN..... I was reading Sharon's blog and on this post, she was showing how she cropped her art, and it looked so cool this way.  So when I did my wood blocks, I decided to do this to a few also--

These 2 are actually from just one painting, but now it's 2!

And of course, I have to embellish and finish off the sides--

I want to finish off each one differently, so even though there will be multiple prints, they'll still be a bit different from one another.

So when I look at what I've done with these so far--

as a group--I'm really happy with the direction my art has been going--it makes me smile : )

  2. Really wonderful! It's so great that the little elements can be cropped to be the main focus of an all new piece. I love this idea. I'd love to have an entire wall piece of these little chunky pieces. So colorful. You are such a talent. I'm going to check out the websites you linked in your post. Such a pleasure to read your blog this morning.
    Thanks for sharing

  11. Diane...how smart you are! I love the idea of putting prints on wood. My problem is that I do not have access to getting prints made locally, unless I can find something online. It's a great idea to crop sections of paintings. Your girls look divine, as always. Thanks for posting about this.

  13. So Pretty and so eye catching for people at the fairs, and then to have the idea of cropping gives you more things for the booth. Each piece is different but yet there is consistancy for a grouping, these would look so good mixed with books on a book shelf, even a couple on a window sill. I enjoy art that I don't always have to hang on the wall, things I can mix and match on taller antique furniture I have in the house.

You have worked hard and it shows, these are beautiful, it is fun to see how our work looks when cropped, used differently.

I did this a couple times, I covered cardboard with newspaper, then painted, stenciled, stamped designs on it that would compliment the paintings, added the paintings in a collage form and put piece in a frame with glass. I used found frames and I didn't mat the work. The paintings were different sizes and the background on the newspaper showed inbetween. I would do a photo but it is all framed with glass and is now hard to get a photo becaue of so much glare, I have tried twice to do this.

  30. This is such a fabulous idea, they look amazing! I have done paintings on 2x4's before, they were really long skinny ladies but the little chuncks of wood all embelished with delicious colors are rich and SO eye catching. These are going to fly! I may have to try a few chunks of wood myself.
What do you use at the end to seal the images onto the wood?

  31. One word - WOW - or did I use that the other day. Very cool. I can't get into wooden blocks but am so impressed with what you have done. Great art work showing up on your blog every day! Exciting....

  36. You are amazing. I love when inspiration just goes in circles like that. I took Jane's class too and was thinking about doing some prints on wood but I love how you have added the original sides to yours. So wonderful. So there you go, inspiration going in circles because if I use some of my little crops...on wood...I will surely do a little doodle on the sides. I do need to know (just because I need to know) are you a power tool girl? Like did you do the cutting of the 2 X 6? I love my power tools! But I'm to the point of letting someone else cut for me now.

  39. Wow, these look SO cool! I need to try these larger block prints. For the last few years I've been doing this on a smaller scale and making chunky Christmas ornaments. Basically doing this same thing but inserting an eye hook on the top and hanging it by a loop of ribbon. They're so tiny and easy but I usually sell a ton around the holidays--- and off from the holidays! You've inspired me to make more ;) Are these done with mod podge?

  40. makes me smile too
will you be selling any of these embellished prints on Etsy or ???

  41. You are so prolific Diane! I always get a real rush from completing a piece, but lately with 'real' work pressures these are few and far between - you, lady, must be on a permanent high!!

  44. I just watched Gritty Jane's texture tutorial - very good indeed. Thanks for being so faithful to my blog. I am so behind in visiting my list - where does the time go?
You always have something new in your repertoire - very inspiring! I have no computer skills and spent all day yesterday (without my son, Nick I will add) changing the blog. If you want to play around you can with all of blogger's new formats. Nothing is permanent until you click the button in the upper right corner that says change blog. But expect to be addicted and it will take most of a day if you are like me...
