I Love All Kinds of Color

Lately  my  art  has  been  very  colorful--I've  been  liking  the  bright  ones  lately  as  you  can  see.   But  sometimes  I  let  the  piece  tell  me  what  color  it  needs.

In  the  meantime,  I'm  always  sketching  faces  just  for  fun,  and   I  really  liked  her--

....so  I  took  her  out  of  my  sketchbook  and  put  her  on  a  canvas.   But  she  seemed  to  want  a  softer  palette...so  I  went  with  the soft  greens  and  pinks  and  roses----she  had  a  romantic  look  to  me..

So  then  I  wanted  to  make  a  companion  piece  for  her--my  painted  version  of  a  rose--

I  have  problems  with  roses.  I  tried  to  copy  the  look  of  the  roses  that  are  on  the  sides (these  are  napkins  collaged  on),  but  forget  it.   It's  okay--you  get  the  idea  that  it's  a  rose,  but  it's  not  what  I  pictured  in  my  head.   Painted  roses  for  me  are  one  of  those  things  that  I  have  to  practice, practice, practice  at,  and  I  know  I  could  get  better.

But  I'm  happy  with  the  way  these  2  compliment  each  other,

....and  for  now,  I'm  sticking  with  this  color  palette.   Working  on  more  right  now.....

I am thinking of doing some rosy things with a pastel palette myself as I want to create a little more calm and peace around my home for the holidays. You have definitely inspired me this morning!

  9. I absolutely love this one Diane. I think it is her long neck that makes her so unique. The rose goes perfectly and you really do know how to make it look realistic with all those many layers of petals. All in all, a beautiful piece of artwork!

  10. Diane, she's lovely, and I think the rose is so soft and pretty! It reminds me of a rose I found on my plant when we got home last night.

  17. Your rose looks like a rose and it is beautiful and there is no reason it needs to look like someone else's rose. That is the beauty of a talent like yours. You have the talent to make your own rules!

  18. I like her hair very romantic looking so the rose complements it well...nothing wrong with your rose. I think we should have a feeling of a rose not one that is boring and perfect in every detail..you can have a photograph that does that!

  20. I love what you did with the sketch, Diane! I also LOVE your loosely painted rose! Having a background in realism painting makes those loose styles very difficult for me to achieve. I'm truly envious!

  27. No, I LOVE the rose - the loose strokes and impression of layers - I really love it! And your sketch and the way you incorporated her is just amazing - I want you to know that I look at decorative napkins in a whole new way because of you!
Studio day for me too - yeah! Have fun and thanks for your sweet note about K! xoxo

  32. you have been having too much fun, YOU. i left a note on fb and said something about the "grid thing". ...and thought about it later, and hope you know that it was all good, that i meant grids for me get too bogged down with too much "sameness"...nothing to do with your grids. you know i love your work to PIECES! :)) xoxo
