Newspaper

The theme this week at The Three Muses is the newspaper.  Now I have to admit that I've never been a newspaper reader even before the internet, but when I was very young, and I mean very young (before my teen years), I loved the comics.

So I decided to make one of my altered boxes with the Sunday Comics.  They were my favorite, because they were in color.  I probably haven't read the comics since I was that young, so I looked through them  to see if some of my favorites were still there.  The only one that 's still being published is Blondie--that was on my top 10 along with Little Lulu, Nancy, Winnie Winkle, and Archie--boy am I dating myself!   And there's others that are still around like Peanuts, Beetle Bailey and Prince Valiant--who reads Prince Valiant anyway?!--well somebody obviously did and still does.

The newspaper unfortunately is probably on its way out too--I think it will be around for a while, because alot of people still enjoy their morning coffee and paper, like my husband.  But even he's gone over to the dark side--he has his morning coffee with the internet--let's face it, that's where we can find the most up-to-date news.

I really enjoyed this theme--I would never have thought of making a box from the Sunday Comics--now that's what  I  call recycling!

  1. Your boxes are such a joy to behold! This is no exception. I'm glad I "tweaked" your memory of cartoons. They make for a honey of a box! Thanks for participating in our challenge!

  12. The box looks great - its so fun and happy. I hope the newspaper never goes away, although it more than likely will. I am so old-fashioned for certain things...I LOVE actual books, for instance, and I will never give those up! I did make one concession for my husband and now only buy music online. But I truly miss reading liner notes and seeing the photos! Theresa

  17. You make the best collages with boxes. The comics you used are adorable and reminded me of my childhood, also.

As I mentioned on Lori's blog, I am an internet and TV news junkie. But, I didn't grow up that way. When I was young, I was expected to read the newspaper each day and discuss it at dinner. This theme, and your lovely interpretation of it, have brought back a lot of memories.

  22. That's fantastic. I think they call it 'upcycling' now, though that sounds as if it would puff you out if you did it too long. Love the coloured blocks on the top to add to the child-theme - it really finishes it off nicely. I think newspapers make a great base for art. I'm going to do more!

  34. SO CUTE!! I loved the comics also and I don't even read the hard copy paper any more. Now, for the Copics. There are so many colors it will make you head swim. If you are just going to get a few and just use them as markers rather than blending and shading I suggest to just go get your favorite colors. Hobby Lobby has them and they have lots of them. They will bleed through the page because they are alcohol based ink. So just keep that in mind. I love to use mine.

  42. When I was young Prince Valiant books could be collected at a local little supermarket. I've still got them all and now my children read them. (after I've told them to be careful). I would dream about being Aleta and then Valiant would come to the rescue and kiss me.... Anyway: I love your piece! It's beautiful!

  43. Hi Diane! Yes, I am very sad also about our little precious, mullet wearing, Alex Lambert. What happened??I thought he was a favorite. Well, I was very moved by Michael Lynche and I love that little precious Aaron Kelly. I am not too crazy about the girls---maybe Katie Stephens since she looks after her grandmother with Alzheimers. And what is the deal with Cara all over Simon? She needs to move over.
