So whenever we go on one of our road trips, I always grab a few art magazines and books that I have--whatever is laying around is what goes with me. And I'm so glad that this one ended up in my bag--
This is the latest issue, and I've already read the whole magazine, but I kind of forgot about it. When I saw what was on the cover by artist Sue Pelletier, I thought--ooooh, I want to do that too! And with me having the time to actually read the article, I knew exactly what to do when I started. She calls it plaster collage, and that's how you start out --with patching plaster. I didn't have that, so I just used a heavy modeling paste.
I love the texture that you get
And then when this is all dry is when the real fun starts, and you can start collaging and layering--
So I want to say Thanks to Sue! She's a frequent contributor to CPS, and I'm VERY partial to her style--so go check out her blog.
And I also wanted to show you this--
Okay, I found this little round globe (just the globe) laying on a table at a garage sale a few months ago. The people who were having the sale didn't even know where it came from, so they gave it to me. And then I attached it to this metal green base. I'm not even sure what it is, and I've had it forever (see--- don't throw anything out!) And now that I have all of these beautiful maps that I showed you here (you can probably guess where I'm going with this) I had to make this--
I just added some postage stamps and some old coins!
And guess what guys--I'm writing this post on my NEW "bell" laptop. The only thing that wasn't broken on the other one, pretty much, was the hard drive (all of my stored memory), which I was very grateful for--so we were able to transfer the hard drive over to this new one. The first thing I'm going to get is an external hard drive. A year ago, I didn't even know what that meant, but I sure do now, and I'm not taking any chances!
I love this. I enlarged it and wow you are right what great texture. It has a little steampunk flare to it too. I'm really enjoying mixed media and collage. Thanks for all your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful as is the one with globe and map....I love map paper....and gave away my small globe collection five years ago...boohoo. These are great!!
ReplyDeleteI was so excited to see what you were going to do with the globe, that is sooooo neat! I love it. And I love your other piece with the texture too,you really work quick,I think I'm just on the internet too much and plus I just think about things to make for a few days before I get started. You inspire me. I'm glad you got a new computer, hopefully this one will last awhile.
ReplyDeleteGreat piece, and thanks for showing all those cool things you got, cant' wait to see where they end up.
ReplyDeleteYou are so busy. I can't begin to keep up with you. It takes me forever to just think of a design, then to turn it into art is even longer. Both of these are adorable. Two of my favs, even. The bird is a real work of art. I love your take on Sue's technique. And that globe is the cutest. You sure put it to good use. I agree. Don't ever throw anything away, especially if you are a mixed media artist.
ReplyDeleteOh Diane so b eautiful and creative just grabs a person right away. Yes I have had thoughts of that article also for some work.
ReplyDeleteThat little green base use to have a long shap metal stick from the center and a long time ago shops worite out a ticket when you purchased things, the sustomer got the yellow slip and the original was stuck on the spindle for the shop owner to use a reference for bookeeping. I saw them when I was a little girl. That box is just wonderful with a Diane imagination. Such a fun visit here today.
Diane, your new piece is fabulous! I was so happy to see the texture, but when you added the little bits and bobs, it became a "wow" piece!!!
