I'm Trying Very Hard to Think Spring!

I  really  am,  but when  you  have  temps  in  the  20's,  it's  kind  of  hard.  Tomorrow  looks  like  a  warm  up--sunny  and  in  the  mid  30's--time  to  break  out  the  bermuda  shorts!   Well,  at  least  I  can  think  Spring  with  my  she  art  girls--

I  haven't  altered  a  birdhouse  in  a  long  time.  They're  fun  to  do--each  side  is  like  a  new  canvas  to  work  on--completely  separate  from  the  other  side--

So.....what else can I do with these girls?...Hmmmmm...

I  had  to  do  it  : )

You  know,   I  wasn't  even  going  to  sign  up  for  this  class--I  did  it  on  a  whim,  but  now  I'm  so  glad  that  I  did,  and  I've  become  a  big  Christy  fan  (check  out   the  very  excellent  giveaway  that  she  has  going  on  right  now  with  Pink  Paislee  papers)   And  guess what??   She's  offering  a  new  class  in  May--She  Had  Three  Hearts--Art  Journaling  Workshop.   I've  already  signed  up  for  it.  It  doesn't  matter  what  the  class is,  I  know  I'll  like  it,  but  it  sounds  great,  and  her  price  for  the  class  is  impossible  to  turn  down--go  check  it  out!

A She Art Re-mix

Reading  my  blog,  you  all  know  that  I  like  to  recycle  my  art.   And  that's  exactly  what  I  did  with  my  she  art  girls.   I  took  these  images--

on  this  mirror!   This  really  is  a mirror.  I  just  covered  up  the  mirror  part--you  wouldn't  want  to  see  my  reflection   when  I  took  this  photo--not  a  pretty  sight   : )

And  since  it's  a  mirror,  I   want  to  remind  anyone  who  looks  into  it--these  daily  thoughts  to  remember--

 

And  when  I  think  of  it,  this  was  a  great  piece  to  make  to  go  with  Christy's  last  lesson.   The  lesson  is  all  about  making  it  personal  by  using  copies  of  personal  letters,  your  children's  artwork,  old  ticket  stubs,  cards  you  received,  etc.    So  wouldn't  this  be  great  as  a  picture  frame  with  your  personal  memorabilia  on  it  and  then  adding  a  family  photo?  Or  how  about  copies  of  brochures,  receipts--you  know  things  that  you  collect  on  a  vacation  that  you've  taken,  like  for  instance --New  York  City  ; )

You  get  the  point--I  think  that  this  type  of  art  is  great  when  it's  personalized.

Scenes From NYC, a Giveaway, and a Treasury

We  had  a  great  time  in  New  York--just  a  bit  cold,  though.   Last  summer  when  we  went,  it  was  just  a  "bit"  hot--we  really   need  to  go  when  the  temperatures  are  a  little  better.   Well,  at   least  it  didn't  rain  :  )  So  let  me  show  you  a  few  places  that  we  went  to--

We  took  a  walk  on  the  Brooklyn  Bridge,  and   while  we  were  there  we  had  the  BEST  pizza  at  Grimaldi's--a  very  popular  pizza  shop  there.   And  we  also  went  to  the  Brooklyn  Museum  of  Art--

It's  a  beautiful  museum,  but  I  think  I  liked  the  MoMA  a  little  better. 

Saw  the  Dakota  where  John  Lennon  lived 

And   right  across  the  street--Central  Park  West--

              

If  I  lived  here,  I'd   be  here everyday--I  loved  this  park,  and  obviously  do  does  this  little  guy--

We  kept  busy  and  saw  some  great  art  everywhere  we  went!

Would You Like To See a Tutorial?

......on   how  to  make  this  piece?--

It  looks  like   metal  embossing,  doesn't  it?   It's not--it's  all  made  with  aluminum  foil  and  various  other  mixed  media  techniques.   And  to  find  out  more,  just  head  on  over  HERE  at The House of Art and you can see how to get this effect with plain old  foil.    I  am  the  monthly  muse  there   for  March  right  now---cool!!   It's  amazing  what  you  can  do  with  everyday  aluminum  foil.  And if this is your first time there, stay and look around.  It's a great place for artists to see videos of other techniques and insightful articles written by some very talented artists.  And also check out the very cool giveaway that's going on for the month of March.   We have Emme to thank for  the start of this wonderful community  for all of us artists to  get  together for support and any kind of  help when we need it.  Thank You Emme!!

Having  more  fun  with  another  She  Art  girl--can  you  guess  the  theme?  ; )

Here--I'll  give  you  a  hint--

I  am  having  so  much  fun  "hanging  out"  with  Christy.   Remember  when  you  were  in  high  school  and  there  was  always  the  fun  cool  teacher  that  everyone  liked?   Well,  she's  that  one.   When  she  films  these  videos,  she  has  no  idea  how  her  piece is  going  to  end  up--only  that  she  wants  to  show  us  every  technique  possible.   So  she  has  all   these  different  things  in  front  of   her  and  sometimes  she  gets  a  little  confused  on  what  to  use.   So  my  favorite  part  is  when  she  asks  us  what  we  think....and  I  always  answer  her  right  back...out  loud.   Hey,  you  never  know, maybe  she  hears  me.

And  this  week  she's  added  scenes  with  the  girls,  plus  more  details  with  their  outfits.   I  did  the  first  one  which  is  a  dress  with  pleats--

There's  lots  of  layers  in  the  skirt  part--very  fun.   I  want  to  try  the  next  one  she  shows  us,  because  that  one's  really  cool!   So  there's  only  one  more  week  left--I'll    be  sad  when  this  class is  over,  but  very  happy  from  what  I've  learned.   And  I  have  to  tell  you  if  you  take  this  class  in  April,  be  prepared  to  make  a  mess---I  mean---a  real  mess.  When  you  work  in  her  mode,  everything  is  very  quick--no  time  to  over-analyze  anything,  which  is  a  good  thing.    I  always  make  a  mess,  but  it  was  so  bad,  that  I  had  to  stop  mid-way  to  clean  up--glue  and  paint  EVERYWHERE!   And  I  STILL  can't  find  my  black  Staz-on  ink  pad.  I  think  I  threw  it  out  with  all  of  the  mess.   I  guess  I'm  going  to  have  to  get  another  one--I  use  it  constantly.

Next  week's  lesson  will  have  to  be  put  on  hold  though,  because  we're  off  to  New  York  City  to  visit  our  son  Nick!    He  teaches  at  a  college  in  New  Jersey,  and  next  week  is  Spring  break.   He  likes  to  do  it  the  other  way  around.   He  lives  in  Manhattan  and  commutes  to  his  work  in  New  Jersey.   When  we  were  there  last  summer,  one  of  the  highlights  of  our  trip  was  seeing  the  David  Letterman  show,   and  guess  where  we're  going  again  on  Monday!!   When  you  apply  for  these  tickets  online  months  prior,  you  have  no  idea  if  you  can  get  tickets  or  not.  Well  they  just  called  us  today--Yay!!

Okay  and  more  thing--Facebook.   I've  been  on  Facebook  for  a  couple  of  years  now,  but  not  very  active  with  it.   Well  I  just  started  a  new  artist  page  there!   I'm  planning  on  putting  things  on  there  that  won't  be  on   my  blog--so  head  on  over  to  my  page  and  if  you  "like"  it  then  just  click  "like"  : )

My Classes and a Bob Update

Can  I  tell  you  how  glad  I  am  that  I  signed  up  for  Christy  Tomlinson's  She  Art  Class!    The  first  week  was  jammed  pack!!   And  she  starts  with  very  basic  designs  for  the  girls--she  shows  3  examples,  and  one  of  them  is  an  angel  which  immediately  appealed to me.  So  I  decided  to  make  some  She  Art  garden angels--

I  love  her  energy  and  enthusiasm,  and  she's  very  organic  with  her  designs,  which,  for  the  most  part,  I'm  not.    But  her  technique  of  creating  rubbed  off  on  me,  and  I  just  worked  along  with  her,  and  I  love  the  way  these  girls  turned  out  in  such  a  short  amount  of  time.   All  of  the  layers--

I  highly  recommend  this  class--although  registration  is  now  closed,  I'm  pretty  sure  I  read  that  you  can  sign  up  again  in  April--I  can't  wait  to  see  this  week's  lesson!

And  my  other  class  with  Alisa  Burke,  I'm  also  enjoying--Sketchbook  Delight.  I've  just  watched  the  first  2  weeks  of  the  class,  and  I  have  to  say  that  I'm  not  the  world's  best  sketcher,  but  I  do  enjoy  it.   And  in  these  lessons  she  gives  us  permission  not  to  be  perfect--I  know  that  sounds  silly,  but  you  when  you  hear  someone tell you  this,  it  makes  you  feel  good  about  sketching  no  matter  what  your  sketches  look  like.

And  she  tells  us  to  draw  what  we  like  to  draw  and  what  appeals  to  us.   Well,  I  like  to  draw  faces  and  collect  them  as  well--so  that  was  the  natural  choice--

This  was  so  relaxing  to  me.   She  encourages  us  to  fill  up  the  page,  which  is  never  a  problem  with  me--this  is  what  I  like  to  do  anyway.   And  these  pages  are  done  mostly  with  colored  brush  tip  pitt  pens  and  outlined  with  micron  pen (one  of  my  new  loves).  Her  choice  is  watercolors,  which  I'm  planning  on  trying  (she  has  some  great  tips  with  watercolors).  I've  never  used  watercolors,  but  have  always  wanted  to-so  now  will  be  the  time.

And  speaking  of  Alisa,  not  only  does  she  have  some  great  art  tips,  I  also  found  a  very  quick  recipe  on  her  blog.

These  tiny  red  potatoes  are  so  darn  good.  I  actually  ate  them  as  my  main  course.  In  her  recipe  she  also  added  pearl  onions,  and  a  variety  of  fresh  herbs.   I  didn't  have  the  onions  and  all  I  had  was  the  fresh  parsley--still---DELICIOUS--and  the  fastest  dish  you  could  prepare.  I  don't  like  to  cook  either.  You  can  find  her  delicious  recipe  HERE.

Okay,  and  more  thing--Bob.  His  Mom  and  Dad  were  in  a  wedding  yesterday,  and  apparently  it  must  have  been  an  adult  only  wedding,  because  Bob  couldn't  go,  and  they  didn't  want  to  leave  him  alone  just  yet.   So  I  had  a  visitor  yesterday--

He  looks  a  bit  worried,  doesn't  he?   He  kind  of  was once  his  parents  weren't  there,  but  then  he  settled  in  fine  and  made  himself  at  home.   As  you  can  see,  his  leg  is  just  about  healed.  But  he  kept  going  up  and  down  our  stairs,  and  by  the  end  of  the  day,  he  was  having  trouble  keeping  his  leg  on  the  ground--it  was  probably  a  little  sore--poor  thing.   Monday  will  be  the  first  time  in  2  weeks  that  he'll  be  left  alone.  I  think  they're  going  to  have  a  whole  new  set  of  problems!!

Here's  my  latest  piece--

And  let  me  start  off  by  saying  that  I  am  crackle-impaired--you  know  the  kind  of  crackle  that  you  put  on  your  finished  piece  and  when  it's  dry,  you  antique  over it  and  cracks  will  "magically"  appear--they  never  appeared  for  me.   The  only  crackle  that  works  for  me  is  the  Ranger  distress crackle  paint.  I  like  it,  but  it covers  up  what  you  have  underneath  of  it.   And  the  Ranger  actually  has  the  clear  distress  paint,  but  these  little  bottles  of  paint  are  not  cheap,  and  if  you  wanted  to  do  a  complete  piece  with  the  clear  kind,  you'd  probably  need  to  use  2  of  these  pricey  bottles,  so  that  wasn't  an  option. 

I've  mentioned  on  my  blog  a  couple  of  times  that  I  couldn't  do  regular  crackle,  so  Janine  contacted  me  and  told  me  about  Jo Sonja's  crackle  medium.   She  said  that  it  always  worked  for  her,  so  I  ordered  some  from  Dick  Blick,  and  then,  of  course,  put  it  aside.

In  the  meantime,   Cheryl  was  having  the  same  problem,  but  was  successful  after  getting  help  from  other  bloggers  that  she  noted  on  this  post.    One  of  them  was  Moriah.   Well,  Cheryl  made  a  point  of  contacting  me  and  telling  me  about  Moriah's crackle  video  on  her  blog.   This  is  the  best  video  I've  seen  on  how  to  achieve  the  crackle  technique,  and  she  just  happened  to  be  using  the  Jo Sonja  brand.

Let  me  show  you  the  detail  of  my  piece--

I  DID  IT!!

In  the  past  with  the  other  crackle  products,  I  always  would   apply  it  too  thick,  and  it  would  never  dry,  and  even  when  it  dried,  it  didn't  crack.   So  I  was  a  little  conservative  applying  it  this  time,  and  I  got  these  tiny  cracks,  which  I  like  alot.   But  I  really  wanted  the  larger  cracks,  but  it's  still okay,  because  I  actually  got  cracks!

So  this  is  the  side  piece  of  the  canvas--

 You  can  see  that  the  I  have  random  crackle  spots,  which  I  like  again,  but  I  really  intended  for  more  uniform  cracks.  I   thought  I  applied  the  medium  evenly,  but  apparently  I  didn't.   Moriah,  if  you're  reading  this,  any  suggestions  on  how  to  get  more  even  coverage?   But  I  still  like  this  look  even  if I  can't  get  any  further  with  this  method,  because  I  got  cracks!! 

And  after  I  did  all  of  my  crackling,  I  knew  that  this  piece  needed  a  little  more  to  it,  so  I  collaged  some  bits  of  paper  on  it.  I  was  thinking  of  trying  the  crackle  again,  but  decided  not  to.

 I  think  I  like  it  better  this  way--it  seems  to  add  a  little  more  dimension  to  the  piece.  Just  look  at  those  cracks!!--love  em!

You  know  how  we're  all  told  that  we're   on  our  own  art  path,  and  everyone  is  at   a  different  place  in  their  journey?   Well,  these  3  guys  are  miles  ahead  of  me.  I'm  the  girl  running  behind  them  saying--HEY--Wait  up!   Well,  they  all  stopped  on  their  path  to  help  me  along  mine,  and  that's  why  I  say  Thank  You.
