So this week I'm the guest host over at The Butterfly Effect and it's all about creating layers in your artwork. And I explained in my post that when I was making my original piece, I was using a smaller canvas (8 x 8) for my paint palette because I'm tired of wasting paint and wanted to do something with the the paint that I always have left over. So every time I was finished painting, I would take the unused paint on my "palette" and just play around with it.
........so.....here was the first layer of another painting....and I kept going with it...
.....and I kept adding so many layers that I hated that I lost count, but then I started liking it...
(wow--it doesn't even look like the original canvas)....there were so many layers, that I was able to see the house on the left side that I pulled out and if you look at the top right-hand corner, you can see an image of a butterfly--which kind of led me to a butterfly theme.
details ..
there's only one way to get all of this depth and texture, and that's with layers. And this one took a while---I would leave it for a day and add some more stuff to it, and I kept doing that until I was happy....but it took me a while to get happy (I almost threw it out).....but I'm glad I didn't : )
That is looking wonderful I may give it a go when I have little bit more time!
ReplyDeleteLife and art gets accomplished in layers :-) Great post.
ReplyDeleteHi Diane, back to blogging again- after some wonderful time with Mathilde.
ReplyDelete---WOW ,I could not believe that it was the same canvas you showed here- it is fantastic what you ended up with, dear.
And I love the -- : go on till you like it-
HUGS,Dorthe
The layers certainly make for a rich looking finish.
ReplyDeleteThis is also something to remember in the task of painting a wall, the new coat of paint will be affected by the last layer. I like this work of yours today a lot, and the reminder to do something else if the first couple layers are not to your liking.
It's lovely! I too hate wasting leftover paint -- sort of OCD about it really, so I often use it for base painting on new canvases...
ReplyDeleteand we are glad you didn't either!! it is so unbelievable that this is what ended up...i love doing this, it's unbelievable every darn tootin' time. i just LOVE LOVE your outcome! and that you share share share all the time! it enthuses, enlightens and inspires us all! xo
ReplyDeleteWonderful--I love to use up my leftover paint in this way!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing this, Diane! I'm sure that this is why your paintings always look so finished, so deep. I love it, and you've inspired me to stop being so impatient and give it a go!
ReplyDeleteLove when things just appear! So cool! I have also been on the verge of tossing a painting in the trash. Glad u kept going with this! It is awesome!
ReplyDeleteLoving those layers:O) love the colors too:O)
ReplyDeleteWow, thank you again for inspiring a learner.
ReplyDeleteI have just almost given up on a painting, but now see it may well be worth carrying on.
Such lovely layers!
ReplyDeleteI was really hoping to see where this one took you. :) Looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteAmazing works Diane, I like it!
ReplyDeleteGreetings.
Diane..love this idea and have been doing the Tracy Bautista class too. I am not into doing glam girls so my pieces are evolving differently. I also clicked onto your guest column..very nice!! I have posted my class work so far on my blog. But I am behind as I all of a sudden have gotten busy with workshops, demos and my first one person show! Yikes
ReplyDeleteWow -- Lovely work! I found you on Marlynn's Honeysuckle Breeze, and I know I've seen your work in the Somerset mags ... a goal of mine one day. Three cheers!
ReplyDeleteWell I am glad you didn't throw it out, too! I love the way it turned out and need to learn that lesson to just set it aside and come back to it later.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of pen did you use for the doodling? It looks really good and I have trouble with knowing which pen will write on top of which kind of paint.
Oh how I love this! I am so glad you didn't get rid of it. With all those yummy layers, there is so much to see. Truly inspiring!
ReplyDeleteWow, fantastic effects Diane. Lots of layers and texture. Just beautiful. thanks for sharing.:)

Hello Diana, what a piece...and so much history to it, beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteOne word: AMAZING !!!!
ReplyDeleteI continue to have a few computer problems, but I'm sure glad I was able to stop by this morning. I was very impressed by the outcome of this piece. Like you, I also save all my paint off my brushes, credit cards, and such, but mine never look as good as yours. I will have to continue adding layers to mine, I guess. I'm extremely impressed.
ReplyDeleteSimply perfect! Love the vibrancy, the colors, all the layers, and variety! Looks like you had a good time doing these!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely Sunday!
Gaby
Lovely pieces!
ReplyDeleteI've heard of others doing this, using left over paint and I STILL can never remember to do that! Thanks for the inspiration Diane!! I'm going to try so hard to remember to try this, it turned out beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE IT! Those layers DO make for such an interesting, deep piece - I bet I could stare at it for hours. Glad that you didn't ditch it - you pushed through and the result is feminine and gorgeous! xoox
ReplyDeleteWhat a great use for the left over paint. It certainly makes for interest. I love the finished piece and so pleased you did not dispose of it before it was complete.
ReplyDelete7 days and counting..... oh my oh me. We are coming soon upon our day. Love you art work!
ReplyDeleteThat turned out beautiful Diane. I love the way you detail your work! I remember a time when I knew nothing about what layering can to. I would like the way something looked or the way the color was and not continue and my paintings lacked so much depth. I am still learning, but now I know not to get attached to anything in the beginning...to keep going and let the painting "mature".
ReplyDeleteI really love your work!
this is a wonderful idea and it turned out beautiful and interesting too.
ReplyDeleteI also don't like wasting paint. I have been placing the left overs on paper, later covering that with gesso on which i at some time do art on.
beautiful layers and layers. Lovely lovely as always!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work! Sometimes I fall in love with my first layer...then it stalls the whole process. Finally, I just let it go and get over it. Great idea tip on how not to waste paint.
