Old Skool Somerset (plus a couple of Giveaways that I want to tell you about)

Okay  another  magazine  that  I   took  with  me  on my  little  trip  was  an  old  Somerset  magazine  from  2003!  I  think  I bought  it last  year  or  the  year  before  when  they  have  their  annual   back  issue  sale.  I   think  it  might  be  going  on  right  now  over  at  Stampington.com--you  can  find  some  great  buys.  Well  anyway,  I  found  another   project  that  was  calling  my  name.

And   usually  when  I  do  these,  I  start  out  with  a  prompt, and  it  will  usually   lead  the  way.  This  time  it  was  these--

These  great  children's  blocks  that  I  had--nicely  aged  and  dirtied  up--like  they  should  be.  And  here's  where  they  led  me--

This one  pretty  much  put  itself  together--I  love  that  when  it  happens.

And   I'm  sure  alot  of   you  know  Rebecca   from  Daisy  Dolls,  and  if  you  don't,  then  you  are definitely  in  for  a  treat--you  have  to   check  out  her  blog.  Well,  she  had  showed  you  on  her  blog  a  gift  that  I  had  given  to  her........and  NOW--I  want  to  show  you  what  she  gave  me  in  return!

This  is  a print  from a painting  that  she  had  done  when  she  returned  from  India  last  year.  Is  this  not  gorgeous!!  And  look  at  the  bead embellishments  that she  added on--all  covered  in resin.  And  how  about that  very  cool  elephant?!  Rebecca,  I'd  say  that  you  captured  the atmosphere  of  India very well--thank  you  so  much!!  It's now  happily  living  with  all of  it's  other  new  friends  in  my  art  room.

And  speaking  of  Rebecca--her  daughter,  Emma Grace  has  a  blog  too, and  she  is  having  her  very  first  giveaway!   Emma  Grace,  you  inspire  me  with  your  enthusiasm  and  creative  spirit!!--don't  ever  loose it!!  So  if  you  haven't  gone  over  and  signed  up  yet--what  are  you  waiting  for?!.........GO!!.......NOW!!

Inspired by CPS

So   whenever  we  go  on  one  of  our  road  trips,   I  always  grab a  few art  magazines  and   books  that   I  have--whatever  is  laying  around  is  what  goes  with  me.  And  I'm  so glad  that  this  one  ended  up  in  my bag--

This  is  the latest issue, and I've already  read  the  whole  magazine,  but  I  kind of  forgot  about it.  When  I saw what was  on  the  cover  by  artist  Sue  Pelletier,  I  thought--ooooh,  I  want  to do that  too!   And   with  me  having  the  time  to actually read  the article,  I  knew  exactly  what  to  do  when  I  started.  She  calls  it  plaster  collage,   and  that's  how you start  out --with  patching  plaster.  I  didn't  have  that,  so  I  just  used  a  heavy  modeling  paste.

And  then  when  this  is  all dry  is  when  the real  fun  starts,  and you  can start  collaging  and  layering--

And  I  also  wanted  to  show  you  this--

 Okay,  I  found  this  little  round  globe (just  the  globe)  laying  on  a table  at  a garage  sale  a  few  months  ago.  The  people  who  were  having  the sale  didn't  even  know where  it  came  from,  so  they  gave  it  to  me.  And  then  I  attached  it  to this  metal  green  base.  I'm  not  even  sure  what  it  is,  and  I've  had  it  forever  (see--- don't  throw  anything out!)  And   now that  I   have  all   of  these beautiful  maps  that  I  showed  you  here  (you  can  probably  guess where  I'm  going  with this)  I had  to  make  this--

I  just  added  some  postage  stamps  and  some  old  coins!

And  guess  what  guys--I'm  writing  this  post  on  my  NEW  "bell"  laptop.  The  only  thing  that  wasn't  broken  on  the other one,  pretty  much,  was  the  hard  drive (all of  my stored  memory),  which  I was  very  grateful  for--so  we  were  able  to transfer  the hard drive  over  to this  new  one.  The first  thing  I'm  going  to  get  is an external  hard  drive.  A  year  ago, I  didn't  even  know  what  that  meant,  but  I sure do  now,  and  I'm  not  taking  any  chances!

Back to Work/Play

So  it's  good  to  be  back  at  my  "work"  place.  I'm  getting  into  the  flow  again  and  have  been  working  on some  new pieces,  but  I wanted  to  show  you  where  we  stayed  in  Chattanooga  when  we  were  there.

This  is  the  Chattanooga  Choo Choo  Hotel--Chattanooga's  old  train  station  restored  into  a  wonderful  hotel  complex.

As  soon  as  you  walk  in,  it's  like  stepping  back  into  time  right  down   to the   1940's   music  that's  playing.  And  they  have  their  own  little  world  inside--

Here's  two  teenage  friends  enjoying  the  gardens--well,  actually  she's  texting--sign  of  the  times,  I  guess  : )

There's   little  shops  and  restaurants--

 

And  all  of  these  old  passenger cars  are  now  hotel  guest  rooms.   However,  my  "business"  expenses  wouldn't  allow  us  to  stay  in  one  of  these--we  were  just  in  the  regular  hotel  part  : )

And  I  had  to  get  a  shot  of  this--

And   here  it  is  when  you  open  up  the doors--

This  very  large  sitting  room  BEFORE  you  enter the  actual  ladies  room (That poor little girl  probably  went  running  to  her  mother crying  'Mom,  there's  a  crazy  lady  in  her  taking  pictures  of  me!'

Then  the  next  day  we  went  to  Gatlinburg  in  the  Smoky  Mountains.  This  photo was  taken  on  the  balcony  of  where  we  stayed.

We  were  actually  staying  right  in  downtown  Gatlinburg,  but   back  here  was  very serene  and absent  of  any  noise  except   for  the  sounds  of  nature--loved  it!

This   is  such  a great  area  of  the country.  I'll  never stop  being  amazed  at  the  art  that  God  has  created  for  all  of   us  to  enjoy.

So In The End....

I  did  very  well  on  my  "business"  trip.  I  finally  emptied  out  all  of  my  bags  and  put  everything  in places  that  I  can   remember  where  they  are.  I'm  a  little  more  organized  now this  year  than  I was  last  year,  so I think  I'll  be  able  to  remember.  And  I've  been  trying  to  phase  out  of   making  over  old  furniture  but  I  just  couldn't  resist--

This  Singer  sewing  table  makes  a great  base  for  a  table.  We  have  larger  cupboard  doors and  they  make  the  perfect  table  top!

I  really  do  have  a  problem  with  lace.

And   do  you  think  I  have  enough  knobs  now?.........I  don't  know......

Did  I  mention  that  I'm  also  partial  to  vintage  kitchen  towels  and  ladies'  hankies?  Hankies!!--how could  you  not  love  these?!  And  don't  forget  about  those  buttons!!

And  I'm  always  on  the  look-out  for  a  rooster  to  add  to  my  collection.  I  saw  alot  of  many  unique ones,  but  I  have  too  many  and  not  enough  space,  so  I  was  thinking  more  on  the  smaller  side.   It  was  a  toss-up  between  this  one--

(This  one  is  pretty  neat--it's  made  out  of  terra  cotta.)

Or  one  of  these  for  only  $6.00  each--

This  one  was  really  speaking  to  me--literally,  but  in  the end  I  didn't  think  that  he  would  be  too  happy  with  me  in  my  art  room,  so  I  went  with  the  terra  cotta  one.

This  was  a  4-day  sale  and  we  were  there  from  the very  beginning  bright  and  early  on  Thursday  morning,  and I  was  just  oooohing   and  awwhing  at  all  of  the  "treasures"  before  me.   Well   by  Saturday  afternoon,  all  of  these  "treasures" (and  they were  EVERYWHERE)  was  all  starting  to  look  like  junk .(I   know  that's  what  alot  of   people   think  anyway,  but  not   me  : )  I  pretty  much  hit  the  wall,  so  we  just  took  the  time  to relax  in  Chattanooga  and  later  Gatlinburg--more  about that  in  my next  post.

Back From Highway 127 Yard Sale

Hey  guys  I'm  back!  I've  only  been  gone  for  6  days,  but  it seems  like 6 years!  I  am  completely  worn  out.  I  don't  know about  this  vacation  thing.  Everytime  I  come  back,  it  takes  me a few  days  to get  my  energy  back.  I  think  I  might  be  doing  this  wrong.  Maybe  I  should  be  taking  the  time  to actually relax!

And  the  heat  didn't   help  any   either.  Everyday  was  in  the  90's  with  very  high  humidity.  Last  Thursday  was  also  very  stormy, scary  weather,  but that sure  didn't  stop any  of  the  crowds.

Look  at  that  traffic!!--but  everyone  was  very  patient  and  very  courteous  with  each  other.

Lots  of  great  booths  everywhere  we  went too.

And  I  was  right--Flower  Power  IS  still  alive!!

 

Right  down  to  the  VW  Bus!!

You'll see everything here!! We saw alot of freshly churned ice cream, but this one was a first for me.

Yes,  he  was  churning  the ice  cream,   and  he  was  earning  his  living  that  day.  Poor thing--it was  so  incredibly  hot out!!

So you're probably wondering what I brought home with me-----so am I.   I bought so much stuff, that I can't even remember.  It's kind of like Christmas for me   going  through  all of  the bags here. I haven't even finished looking through them yet.  I"ll show you some of what I've gone through.

I   have  a  weakness  for  vintage fabrics,  lace, and crocheted  doilies.  I've  crocheted  alot  of  thread   doilies  in  my  day,  so  I  can  appreciate  the  time  to  it  takes  to  make  just  one  of  these.   I  have  enough   fabric  now  to  last  me  for  2  lifetimes!

Hey , look  at  this  --more  lace : )   Also,  some great  deeper  cigar  boxes, and  you'll  always  see  the  old  sewing  machine  drawers  at  the  Highway  127  sale--they  make  great  shadowboxes!

This  is  just  a  fraction  of  all  the  hardware  that  I  found.  And  those  porcelain  doorknobs  were only  $1.00  each,  which  is  very  unusual  at  this sale.   Usually  all  of  the  vintage  doorknobs  are  pretty  high  in  price.

And  handwritten  letters--I  absolutely  LOVE  this  lost  art--handwritten  letters!  And  look  at that  shorthand  book.  I  took  3  years  of  this  in  High  School.   Boy,  that  really  paid  off,  didn't  it?

There's  more,  but  I'll continue  on  in  my  next  post.  And I  wanted  to thank everyone  for  their  help  with  my  laptop  problem.  I'm  going to  have  to say  that  MAC  won  out.   Actually, my  son  Nick  has  one, and  he's  coming  for a  visit  in  a couple  of days too  : )  So  we'll talk.   But  for  right now,  they're  suppose  to  send  us  a  brand  new  one--I'm   still   not  holding   my   breath.  All   I   know  is  that  I  really  miss the speed  of  the laptop.  I've  been  working  on  our old home computer,  which  is  very  very slow,  and  you   have  to  be  very  patient  with  it (kind  of  like  blogger--I'm  having  a  heck  of  a time  this  morning  trying  to  do  this post!) ,  but  I  have  to  say  that  I'm  kind  of  losing  my patience.  But  it's  been  good  to  us, and  you  know  what  kind  it  is?  Well,  it  rhymes  with  the  word   Bell  : )

Another Box Design To Show You before I Leave For My "Business Trip"

So  here's  another   fun way  to  make  a  different  kind  of  box. 

I  started   with  a  wood  craft  box  and  a   candlestick  holder.

And  then  I  made my  design on  all of  the  pieces  before  I assembled  it.  The  candlestick  holder  had  a metal  insert  in  it  for  a  candle  so  I  just  pried  it out.  That  way I  just attached  it  to  the box  with  a screw from the inside  of  the box.

And  here  is  the  completed  box!

So  what  can  you  fill  this  box with?  Well,  since  it's  on  a  candlestick  holder--what  else, but candles!

So  let  me  tell  you  about  my  "business  trip".   I'm  going  to  the  Highway  127  Yard  Sale.  It's  almost  700  miles  of  non-stop  flea  markets  from  dawn  to  dusk  that ranges  from  Michigan  to  Alabama (BTW--HGTV  has  a  show  about  it  every  year).   And  for you  scoffers  of  flea  markets--don't  knock  em  until  you've   tried  one--especially this  one.  PLUS,  you  get  to  see and  meet  people  from  all walks  of  life--especially   at  this  one.  Believe  me,  this  is  a  great  place  for  people  watchers,  or  people  persons  alike!  I'm  leaving  early  tomorrow  morning  and won't  be   back  until  Monday  night,  which  brings  up  another  issue.

Can  anyone  recommend  a  good  RELIABLE  laptop  for me.  Mine  is broken!!  And  it's  only  8  months  old.  We  still  have  a  warranty  on  it, and  the computer  repair  man  came  to  our  house  to  "fix"  it  last  week.  After  replacing  almost  half  of  the  computer,  it  still  doesn't  work, and  now we're  waiting  for his return  with  more  parts.   Between  you  and  me,  I'm  not  holding  my  breath.   To  say  that  I'm  upset,  is  putting  it  mildly.  And  to  add  to that,  I  won't  have  my  laptop  to  take  with  me : (

I  do  think  that  I'll  have  access  to  the  internet  though.   Alot  of  the  motels  now offer   computer  use  to  their  guests,  so  hopefully.  I'll  take  any  suggestions  and  cost  isn't  really  a  major  issue  (I'm  a  PC,  not  a  MAC).  Just  don't  tell  me  about  a  laptop  that  rhymes  with  the  word  Bell!
