A New Poppy Painting--From Start to Finish

Now  that  my  BIG  show  is  over  (it  was  great!)--I  have  some  time  to  get  out  my  paint  and  play!    So  a  little  step-by-step  of  my  latest  painting.

 

The  first  thing  I  did  was  take  one  of  my   canvases  in  my  favorite  size  (12 x 24)  and  put  papers  on  it--

 

 

 

There's  2  reasons  why  I  do  this--first,  even  though  this   pretty  much  gets  covered  up,  I  like  the  texture  it  gives  when  you  paint  over  it,  and  2nd,  I'm  not  a  big  fan  of  painting  directly  on  to  a  canvas.   I  prefer  to  work  on  a  smoother  surface.  

 

And  then  I  got  out  my  paints--

 

 

 

....just  started  laying  paint  down  using  my  brush,  and  you  see  the  brayer, and  texture  tool--whatever  I  was  in  the  mood  for  at  the  time---I  never  have  a  plan  at  this  stage.

Next--was  adding  layers  with  these--

 

 

 

It's  always  a  little  hard to  know  when  to  stop--because  there's  never  an  end,  but  I  decided  that  it  was  time  to  paint  my  poppies--I  knew  from  the  start  that  I  wanted  to  paint  these--

 

 

 

 

 

 

I  kept  working  on  the  background  too--I  wasn't  quite  happy  with  it--adding  and  taking  away  color  until  I  was  happy.  A  great  technique  to  get  rid  of  paint  is  with  plain  old  rubbing  alcohol  (91%)--

 

 

 

You  can  rub  as  much  or  as  little  away  as  you  want--I  was  able  to  bring  back  some  of  my  collage  that  I  started  with  at  the  very  beginning  of   the  piece.

And  this  time,  instead  of  wasting  my  extra  paint,  which  I  have  a  bad  habit  of  doing,  I  had  a  little  8 x 8  canvas  by  my  side  for  the  leftover  paint--

--the  start  of  another  painting!

I'm On a Design Team!

In  the  beginning  of  the  summer  I  was  contacted  by  Deco Art  asking  me  to  become  a  member  of  their  design  team.  Are  you kidding??--that  was  a  no-brainer!   When  I  started  painting  10  years  ago,  the  first  paints  that  I  started  playing  around  with  were  the  Americana  line  of  craft  paints--never  in  my  wildest  dreams  would  I have  thought  that  I  would  be  designing  for  this  company  someday--it  makes  me  VERY  happy.

 

So  they  sent  me  lots  (and  I  mean  lots)  of  their  products--including  these--

 

 

...their  line  of  artist-grade  acrylics--in  every  color--these  paints  are  wonderful--I'd  say  comparable  to  all  of  the  other  acrylic  lines  that  I've  used--very  vibrant  colors!

 

And  I'm  now  listed  with  the  other  artists  on  the  Deco Art  website--very  cool!

So  how  cool  is  this?!   I'm  so  happy  to  be  part  of  the  Deco Art  'team'!!

 

 

And  one  more  thing  I  want  to  share--another  work  of  art--

 

 

 

My  Grandson!  Preston Carter--he  was  born  last  Friday--just  a  day  before  my  big  show  that  I  had  to  go  to--we  kept  telling  him  to  be  born--and  he  listened!  He's  doing  very  well,  and  seems  very  content  in  his  new  world!

 

Okay---now  I  gotta  get  back  to  work--getting  ready  for  week 2  of  my  show,  which,  by  the  way,  was  EXCELLENT  last  weekend!

Getting Crafty With My Flea Market Finds

So  I  have  to  mention  that  I  just  returned  from  one  of  the  best  flea  markets  that  I've  ever  been  too--the  Springfield, Ohio  Flea  Market  and  Antique Show  Extravaganza.   I  went  there  in  May,  and  they  always  have  another  one  in  Sep.--over  2000 vendors!  I've  been  to  a  LOT  of  flea  markets--but  this  one,  so  far  is  at  the  top  of  my  list--you  can  read  more  about  it  HERE--my  blog  post  from  last  May  where  I  talk  about  it  in  more  detail.   But  for  now,  I'll   show  you  what  I  did  with  just  a  little  bit  of  my  finds  from  that  show. 

 

First  of  all--here's   just  the  tip  of  'treasures'  that  I  found--

 

 

 

2  of  my  favorite  things  in  this  photo--letters  and  old  hardware--can  never  pass  them  up...

 

And  being  more  specific--

 

 

...these  sewing  spools  already  covered  in  the  fabric--which  gave  me  a  spark--

 

 

...perfect  for  my  Christmas  show  in  less  than  2  weeks  now...

 

And  here's  another  find--

 

 

 

I've  never  really  seen  anything  like  this  before--a  children's  shoe  shine/bank  combo  metal  box  (not  quite  sure  where  the  bank  part  comes  in  though)--but  it  was  perfect  for  what  I  wanted  it  for--

 

 

 

...and  one more--

 

 

...an  old  pop  crate  filled  with  more  flea  market  finds.  

 

So  I  guess  the  moral  is--everything  can  be  repurposed.   We  don't  want  to  throw  these  items  from  the  past  away--your  trash  will  always  be  someone  else's  treasures  : )

 

I  do  enjoy  bringing  out  my  crafty  side,  but  my  first  love  is  painting  and  just  being  in  my  studio.    So  I  had  to  get  out  my  paints  and  Stuff--

 

 

Actually,  this  is  a  special  order  from  a  lady  that's  coming  to  my  show--very  fun!

So  that's  what  I've  been  doing  these  last  couple  of  weeks--getting  ready  for  my  big  show  and  waiting  for  the  arrival  of  my  grandson  who,  by  the  way,  is  due  on  the same  weekend  of  my  show--wonder  how  that's  going  to  work  out??
