January--Lifebook 2021--Art Journaling

 Wow, can't believe we got through 2020--let's hope this year will start to turn around and we can get some normalcy back--although I'm so used to living this way--that it now seems the normal way  :-)  I'm just happy that I'm able to do what makes me the happiest and content--it really does make a difference to find that in your life and make time for it everyday!

So now that Christmas craziness is over with and the quiet month of January has settled in I've been able to do the same thing--settling in--in my art room and playing.  

And this year I'm so happy that I decided to sign up for Lifebook 2021 hosted by the wonderful Tamara Laporte.  I haven't been in it for a couple of years, but this year I knew I needed to make some art for just me.

Our first lesson was with Tamara--our goddess of light--

Love all the layers and texture--it was just fun to play with different mediums.  And the next lesson from Tamara--our happy owl--

I took it in a little different direction from hers, but loved her owl design and kept to that.

So the next week's lesson (yes there is a new lesson every week with 32 different instructors!) was with Cinnamon Cooney

Again, I put my own spin on this piece--except for the tree girl--I love her!

And I've been playing around with different art supplies--I decided to give charcoal a 2nd chance.  A few years ago I used it and gave up on it--I didn't like the messiness of it.  But this time I got past that and discovered it's fun and forgiving!

Definitely will be  experimenting with these pencils some more--I like the way they work with other mediums.   And the best way to experiment is where else, but your journal.  I'm committed to the one I started last year when the quarantine started, and I'm getting there--adding more pages--

....mostly faces, which I love to do and when it's in my journal I have more freedom to play around, because that's what a journal is--a place to experiment in--this is what I like to put in my journal--painted faces!  and playing with different art mediums.  I think my favorite thing about art journaling is that they are all unique with each artist--it's each person's own individual voice coming out--in words, or paintings, or marks or whatever--no rules--love that!

I really enjoy making vintage children themed art like this--I just like the nostalgia of it.

July Art --Plus Summer

This  year  summer  has  been  a  bit  different  than usual--goes  without  saying,  but  I  have  to  say  I  have  been  enjoying  it.  I'm  always so  busy  and  not  taking  advantage  of   this  great  time  of  year  to  just  relax,  so  I  am  appreciating  that.   First  off,  I  went  blueberry  picking  with  my  daughter  and  grandson--something  I've never  had  time  to do  before,  and  this  is  now  a  weekly  thing-

So  here's  what  I  did with  some  of  them--

First  time  I've  ever  made  these--turned  out  wonderful!

So  besides  visiting  the  beach,  the  only  thing  I've  done  this  summer  are  a  few  antique  stores  and  just  one  flea  market  (which  I  miss  the  most),  but  I  found  some  great  treasures,  and  they  helped  me  make  some  fun  art.   When  I  make  these  shadowbox/assemblage  pieces  I  first  like  to  gather.....

and  then  put  it  together,  finding  even  more  to  add  to  the  story  as  I  go--

I  had  some  Shirley  Temple  books  for  at  least  a  year  now,  just  waiting....

and  then  recently  I  found  Shirley  Temple--

This  piece  basically  put  itself  together  once  I  found  Shirley  :-)

And more  fun  in  my  journal (I'm  getting  lots  of  inspiration  from  Pinterest!)--I'm  committed  now  to  fill this  entire  journal  up  and  even  make  a  cover  for  it--something  I've  never  done  before...

And  lots  of  new  art,  most  of  which  is  now  in  my  Etsy Shop.   This  year  is  definitely  different  than  any  other  year  as  far  as  selling  my  art  and  I  appreciate  all  of  the  support  I  am  getting  through  my  Etsy  sales,  but  I  sure  do  miss  getting  out  there  and  talking  to  avid  art  lovers  and  fellow  artists  at  my  different  shows.

.....with  one  my  favorite  faces  to  paint,  and  around  here  we  don't  get  to  see  this face  that  often  at  this  time  of  year--just  snow  and  more  snow  and  more  snow  and....

 

And  I  used  one  of  my  favorite  mediums--Caran d'Ache water  soluble  crayons--love  the  control  you  can  get  with  them.

From Sketchbook To Canvas

....or  from  art  journal  page  to canvas--either way--you  can  get  some  great  art  going  with  pages  that  you've  been  experimenting  with.  Probably  because  you're  more  organic  in  a  sketchbook/art  journal--and  a  lot  of  times  you  can  get  some  pages  that  you  don't  want  to  hide.

This  happens  to  me  when  I  sketch  faces,  and  when  I  try  to  duplicate  them,  well.....I  never  can  seem  to  do  that.   So...I  chose  these  2  faces from  my  journal  and  decided  to  do  something  with  them--

 

 

 

First,  I  printed  them  out  on  to  dictionary  pages--

 

 

...this  is  one  of  my favorite  ways  to  use  sketched  faces.  

They  always  help  me  bring  the  piece  together--

                    

 

I  always  add  more  color  to  the  faces  with  paint  or  water-soluble  crayons  or  pitt  pens  or  whatever--just  to  bring  them  back  to  life  again.  Sometimes  I  like  them  better  than  the  original.      These  2  are  on   6 x  6  gallery  wrapped  canvases,  another  favorite  of  mine,  because  I  can  continue  the  art  around  the  sides  too.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Another  reason  why  art  journals  are  so  good  to  have--those  times  when  you're  stuck  and  you  need  some  inspiration--you  can  find  it  in  your  own  art!

 

Summer of Color-Week 2-Mint Chocolate Chip!

........one  of  my  favorite  flavors  of  ice  cream,   and  also  a  wonderful  color  combination  to  work  with  in  your  art--you  can't  go  wrong.   This  is  the  color/flavor  for  this  week  for  Kristin's  Summer  of  Color. 

So  for  this  prompt  I  decided  to  make  some  art  with  my  latest  art  technique  that  I've  learned  this  year.   I've  always  loved  this  type  of  paper  art,  but  never  tried  my  hand  at  it  until  I  took  Christy  Thomlinson's  workshop  She  Had  Three  Hearts.    Junelle  Jacobsen  was  a  guest  teacher  for  one  of  the  weeks  and  she  demonstrated  this  technique--rolled  paper  art,  and  I've  been  hooked  ever  since.   I  made  me  some  mint  chocolate  chip  rolls  with  a  little  bit  of  strawberry  ice  cream  added  to  the  mix---

I  painted  up  some  vintage  dictionary  pages---I  like  using  these  because  they're  so  thin,  and  roll  very  easily---but  you  can  use  any  type  of  paper.

I  then  adhered  them  on  to  a  6 x 12  gallery  canvas--

So   basically,  they  became  part  of  my  background along  with  the  collaged  paper  and  lace.   I  knew  that  I  wanted  something  in  the  center  for  my  focal  point,  which  leads  me  to  my  latest  journal  girl--

LOVED  the  way  she  turned  out,  and  she  was  perfect  for  what  I  had  in  mind.   I  reduced  the  size  of  her  on  my  photo  program,  then  printed   her  out  in  black  and  white  on  a  dictionary  page,    and  then  adhered   her  on  to  a  wooden  heart--

 

....and  then  I  just  repainted  her  in  those  yummy  mint  chocolate  chip  colors  and  a  touch  of  strawberry  ice  cream!

Another One For My Journal and For My Etsy

So  last  week  I  was  reading  my  latest  issue  of  Somerset  Studio,  and  I  saw  this  ad (Paper  Whimsy)  with  an  image  of  a lady  that  I  Really  liked.   And  I  wanted  to  draw  her!   So,  I  got  out  the  fearless  journal  (because  there's  no  such  thing  as  messing  up  in  a  journal!)  and  I  did! 

I  remembered  what  I've  read  and  been  told  by  different  online  artists.   Don't  think  of  what  you're  actually  drawing--just  look  at  the  individual  shapes,  sizes,  and  angles,  and  it  seemed  to  help.  I  struggle  with  the  3/4  view,  and  I  was  pretty  happy  with  how  this  lady  turned  out  (my  "model"  is  on  page  19  of  the  Somerset magazine  if  you  have  it)

And  sticking  with  my  plan  of  using  different  art  supplies--I  finished  her  with  Conte  Crayons,  and  Derwent  inktense  pencils.   The  conte  crayons  are  really very  hard  chalk--easy  to  work  with--but  a  bit  messy--you  have  to  spray  a  fixative  over  it  when  you're finished  because  it  smears  onto  the  rest  of  your  work  and  pages.

I've  been   really  liking  my  journal  girls--so  much  so,  that  I  decided  to  turn  THIS ONE  into  an  art  piece!

I'm  really  happy  with  her  and  she's  now  in  my  Etsy  shop  HERE.  

I'm  really  beginning  to  like  this--this  journal  thing--I  think  I  have  a  bit  of  a  theme  going  on  with  my  journal  girls!

New Etsy Listings!!

I  was  finally  able  to  make  a  couple  of  more  pieces  for  Etsy  this  week.  So  do  you  remember  the  Gypsy  girl  that  I  showed  you  a  couple  of  weeks  ago  on  this  post?   I  had  put  her  in  my  Etsy  shop,  and  within  24  hours  she  had  already  found  a  home,  which  was  very  cool,  so  I  decided  to  do  somethine  else  with  her--a  box--

I  had  made  a  box  very  very  similar  to  this  one  last  November,  and  it  was  one  of  my  favorites,  and  I  knew  that  she  would  be  perfect  for  this.

I'm  really  happy  with  the  outcome  of  this  gypsy  girl  box!!

And  then  remember  my  very  first  journal  page  that  I  did  with  the  Pam  Carriker  Strathmore  workshop?   You  can  see  it  HERE--actually,  it's  on  the  same  post  that  my  Gypsy  girl's  on.   Well,  this  is  my  favorite  journal  page  that  I've  done  so  far,  so  I  had  to  do  something  with  her  too.   I  had  a  little  fun  with  her--

Lots  of  fun  to  do  this,  and  the  possibilities  are  endless.

A New Painting! and Week 4 of Journaling

Well.....sort  of  a  new  painting.  It  all started  out  with  one  of  the  papers  that  I  painted.  I  liked  it  so  well  that  I  decided  to  mount  the  whole  thing  onto  a  canvas  and  go  from  there,  but  things  weren't  going  well,  and  the  new  painting  is  underneath  this  one,  which  I  would  call  a  new  collage--

Let  me  tell  you  the story  of  how  this  Gypsy  came  about.  Like  I  said  it  all began  with  this  painted  paper--

Very cool--don't  you  think?   Well,  I  put  it  on  my  canvas  and  started  adding  more  details  to it, and I  was  liking  it  even  more.  So  I  decided  to  make  a  new  face  for  it.  She  was  coming  out  very  well  too.....and  then  I  started  painting  her,  and  I  started  not  to  like  her....but  she  was  okay.  But  the  more  I  kept  trying  to  "fix"  her,  the  meaner  looking  she  got....so  I  said...forget  this!  and  I  just  reached  for  a pretty  scrapbook  paper  and  covered  her  and  my  original  painted  paper  ALL  UP!!

So  then  I  figured  I  could  try  some  techniques  that  I've  been  wanting  to  do.  The  first  one  I  did  was  the  gel  transfer  of  a  face  that  I  had  done  in  my  Moleskine  journal  last  year.  I  knew  eventually  I  would  want  to  do  something  with  her.   And  last  year  in  my  workshop  with  Sharon  (BTW, this  is  an  on going  workshop--Faces--All  Norah's--GREAT  class!),  I  learned  how  to  transfer  inkjet  copies  with  gel  medium,  and  ever  since  then  I  wanted  to  try  doing  it  to  one  of  my  faces.  I  just  printed  her  out  in  black  and white,  did  the  transfer,  and  it  worked! 

All  I  did,  was  redefine  her  features  and  hair,  and  let  the  scrapbook  paper  take  care  of  the  rest  of  her  face.   So   where  did  all  of  this  distressed  shabby  texturing  come  from--this  came  as  a  result  of  all  my  other  techniques  that  I  tried  to  do  and  failed  at.  Everytime  it  didn't  work  out,  I  would  just  say--the  heck  with  this,  and then  I  would  cover  it  up,  and  then  I'd  say--ooh,  I  kind  of  like  this.   This  kept  happening--over  and  over--until  I  ended  up  with  all  of  these  layers  and textures.  If  I  was  trying  to  go  for  this  look,  I  probably  couldn't  have  done  it,  and I  Love  it!!

This  is  a  good  lesson  for  me--not  to  give  up!

And  this  week  was  the  final  lesson  for  the Strathmore  workshop  (boy  that  4  weeks  went  by  fast!).  This  was  the  fun  part--the  doodling--whatever  came  to  mind.   Pam  suggested  using  paint  pens.  And  this  is  how  I  started  out--with  my  Sharpie  paint  pens  (black  and  white),  but  the  lines  were  looking  a  little  too clean  for  me,  so  I  decided  to  get  out  my  favorite  doodling  tools--my  brush  tip  pitt  pens.  I  probably  have  every  color  known  to  man.  I  like  these  because  they  don't  dry  instantly,  and  I  can  smudge  them  with  my  finger.  And  when  you   do  this,  they  dry  more  translucent,  so  the  background  comes  through.   Here's  my  finished  page--

Yesterday,  I  was  planning  on finishing  both  of  my  pages.  I  didn't  realize  that  one  page  with  just  the  finishing  touches  would  take  me  2  hours!  It  felt  like  2  minutes.   I  realize  now  that  this  is  my  favorite  part  of  journaling--the  process--not  even  realizing  how  long  you've  been  sitting  and  just  playing--very  therapeutic!   So  now  I  get  to  do  the  page  next  to  it!  And  I  learned  another  little  technique  that  I  know  that  I'll  use  again.   I  painted  with  the  white  paint  pen, and  then  when  it  was  still  wet,  I  wiped  a  little  around  with  a  baby  wipe--really  liked  that!

And  this  is  for  all  of  you  Idol  fans.  What  do  you  think  of  the  new  judges?  They're  much  more  gentler  with  their  constructive  criticism,  don't  you  think?  Randy  is  now  the  mean  one.  It  seems  that  this  year,  the  show  is  focusing  on  the  better singers  as  opposed  to  the  bad  ones...so  far.  I  really  like  Steven  Tyler's  fun  personality,  but  I  miss  sassy  Simon.
