July Art --Plus Summer

This  year  summer  has  been  a  bit  different  than usual--goes  without  saying,  but  I  have  to  say  I  have  been  enjoying  it.  I'm  always so  busy  and  not  taking  advantage  of   this  great  time  of  year  to  just  relax,  so  I  am  appreciating  that.   First  off,  I  went  blueberry  picking  with  my  daughter  and  grandson--something  I've never  had  time  to do  before,  and  this  is  now  a  weekly  thing-

So  here's  what  I  did with  some  of  them--

First  time  I've  ever  made  these--turned  out  wonderful!

So  besides  visiting  the  beach,  the  only  thing  I've  done  this  summer  are  a  few  antique  stores  and  just  one  flea  market  (which  I  miss  the  most),  but  I  found  some  great  treasures,  and  they  helped  me  make  some  fun  art.   When  I  make  these  shadowbox/assemblage  pieces  I  first  like  to  gather.....

and  then  put  it  together,  finding  even  more  to  add  to  the  story  as  I  go--

I  had  some  Shirley  Temple  books  for  at  least  a  year  now,  just  waiting....

and  then  recently  I  found  Shirley  Temple--

This  piece  basically  put  itself  together  once  I  found  Shirley  :-)

And more  fun  in  my  journal (I'm  getting  lots  of  inspiration  from  Pinterest!)--I'm  committed  now  to  fill this  entire  journal  up  and  even  make  a  cover  for  it--something  I've  never  done  before...

And  lots  of  new  art,  most  of  which  is  now  in  my  Etsy Shop.   This  year  is  definitely  different  than  any  other  year  as  far  as  selling  my  art  and  I  appreciate  all  of  the  support  I  am  getting  through  my  Etsy  sales,  but  I  sure  do  miss  getting  out  there  and  talking  to  avid  art  lovers  and  fellow  artists  at  my  different  shows.

And  back  to  Summer--we  grew  tomatoes  this  year,  and  they're  on  their  way!

Using Up Those Paper Scraps

If  you're  a  mixed  media  artist,  most  likely  you  like  to  use  a  little  or  a  lot  of  collage  in  your  artwork.  And  if  you're  like  me,  it  can  get  out  of  hand  fast  with  the  paper  stash  that  you  collect.   I  used  to  use  a  lot  of  found  papers  and  scrapbook  papers  for  my art,  but  if  you  read  my  blog,  then  you  know my  current  obsession  for the  last  few  years  is  painting  papers  (my  therapy)  and  then  using  them  in  my  art.   And  they  have  gotten  WAY  out  of  hand.   So  every  once  in  a  while,  I'll  make  some  art  using  only  what  I  have,  and  in  my  case,  not  painting  any  more  papers  for  my  art piece  that  I'm  working  on.  (or  in  the  past,  running  to  the  store  and  buying  some  new  scrapbook  paper).   I  ended  up  making  a  lot  of  pieces that  I'm  really  happy  with.

this  last  piece  was  from  a  batch  of  wood  panels  that  I  found  at  a  flea  market.   The  man  told  me  that  he  found  some  doors  laying along  the  roadside  (shameful  to  trash  anything  like  that!)  that  he  took  apart,  and  I  was  fortunate  enough  to  find  them  to  repurpose!

Here's  what  I  got  that  day.  The  skinny  tall  panel  in  the  back  is  what  I  used  for  my  last  piece--don't  throw  these  things  out--other  people  will  put  them  to good  use!   And   look  at  those  cigar  boxes  I  found  from  another vendor  that  day  for  a  very  reasonable  price.   That  was   a  good  day  at  the  flea  market!  

Okay,  so  I  made  all  of  these  pieces  for  my  next  show,  and  hopefully  they'll  find  new  homes  with  all  of  just  what  paper  scraps  that  I  had--and  I  barely  put  a  dent  in  my  papers--I  am  drowning  in  papers  here  :-)

Another First For Me--I'll Be Teaching!

Yes,  I'm  going  to  be  teaching  my  first  workshop--something  I've  always  wanted  to  do,  but  now  that it's  coming  up  in  just  a  few  days,  I'm  Very  nervous  (thinking--'what  did  I  get  myself  into?!')  I  knew  that  I'd  be  feeling  this  way--but  you  have  to  get  that  'first  time'  done,  and  then  you're  fine.....I  hope  :-)

I'm teaching  about  my  current  love--paper  and  paint  and  collage--I  love  sharing  my  techniques  here,  so  why  not  in  person!

First,  we'll  be  playing  with  paint, paper  and  also  the  new  Gelli® 4"round  plate--

Everyone  likes  making  these  papers,  but  wonder  what  can  they  do  with  all  of  them,  which  will  be  part 2  of  my  class--

I'll  bring  projects  for  them--to  make  themselves  or  just  to  use  as  inspiration  for  whatever  art  that  they  would  like  to  make

Or  they  can  make  papers  with  a  specific color  theme  in  mind--

There really is no  end  to  what  you  can  do  with  these  papers--

Painting  papers,  for  me,  is  my  warm-up  for  making  an  art  piece,  and  I'm  hoping  this  is  how  it  will  be  for  everyone  in  my workshop--just  get  out  the  paint  and  all  of the  painting  'tools'  and  just  have  fun--not  worrying  about  the  outcome.

Intuitive Painting

Painting  with  your  intuition--I  have  a  real  big  problem  with  that.  When  I  try,  I  get  more  frustrated--I  usually  will  end  up  with  some  kind  of  art  that  I'm  happy  with--basically  you  don't  stop  adding  layers  or  whatever  until  your  happy  with  it.   But  you're  supposed  to  enjoy  the  process  or  'journey',  and  I  don't,  which  means  I  like  to  have  a  plan  before  I  start  anything--just  the  way  my  mind  works.

And  then  came  along  week  6  of  Life Book  with  Tam's  lesson,  it  is  exactly  the  type  of  'intuitive'  painting  that  fits  me.   I  really  don't  want  to  get  into  the  details  too  much,  since  this  was  Tamara  Laporte's  technique  taught  to  us--but  all  I  can  say  is  that  if  you're  looking  for  a  diverse  mixed  media  year  long  class  with  many  different  familiar  artists--then  this  is  the  place  for  you.

So  a  little  peek  of  the WIP  for  my  first  piece  that  came  out  of  this  lesson--

If  you're  not  familiar  with  Life  book--the  basis  is  to  make    journal  pages  from  the  lessons  you  learn each  week,  and  at  the  end  of  the  year,  you  put  them  together  to  make  a  journal--Life Book 2015.    But  I  really  don't  journal  in  this  way  ( I  really  don't  journal  much  at  all)--so  in  my  way--I  put  it  on  canvas--

(my  way  of  journaling)--but  back  to  this  particular  lesson--I  like  to  call  it  a  planned  intuitive  painting,  if  that  makes  sense.   There  was  a  step-by-step  process  to  this  piece,  but  by  the  end,  you  just  get  into  the  flow,  and I  got  out  of  my  own  way   and  really  let  my  intuition  take  over--I  loved  painting  this  way.

New Cupcake Art--Start to Finish

So,  in  my  last  post,  I  showed  you  my  latest  painted  papers,  and  yes  I've  been  using  them--as  a  matter  of  fact,  there's  only  a  few  scraps  left.   And--yes,  I  have  some  new  cupcakes  to  show--

But  before  I  show  you  the  different  stages  of  this  one,  let  me  show  you  some  more  art  with  my  papers--

It's  fun  using  your own  painted  papers  as  your  main  medium  when  making  an  art  piece!

So....back  to  the  cupcake  piece--I made  a  piece  similar  to  this  a  few  years  ago,  and  at  my  last  show  I  talked  to  a  lady  that  remembered  seeing  that  piece  and  still  regretting  not getting  it  when  she  first  saw  it...so...she  asked  me  to  make  her  one  resembling  the  first  one--and  that's  the  back-story  to  how  this  piece  came  about.

My  first  step--

I  started  with  a  10 x 20 wood  cradle board  with  deep  sides  and  covered  it  with  these  very  cool  book  pages.   This  is  a  physician's  reference  book  that  I  found  at  a  library  book  sale.   The  pages  are  like  a  heavy  tissue  paper--very  similar  to  the  Tim  Holtz  tissue  paper.   A  little  heavier,  but  not  much--the  best  part  about  this  kind  of  paper  is  that  it  becomes  a  bit  transparent  when  collaged  on  to  the  surface,  so  if  I  had  anything  underneath,  it  would  have  come  through  a  bit--great  for  a  layered  look.

Next--

here's  what  I  used  to  add  the  color--I  started  out  with  those  3  inktense  blocks  that  you  see  laying  there---I  have  no  idea  what  the  colors  are--I  just  have  these  all  mixed  up  in  a  box.  If  you're  unfamiliar  with  them--they're  the  same  as  the inktense  pencils  (very  vibrant  watercolor)--I  rubbed the  sides  of  these  blocks  on  to  the  surface  and  then  I  took  a  very  wet  paintbrush  to  spread  the  color  around.   You  can  also  wet  the  tips  of  them  and  put  down  your  color  or  spray  the  surface  with  water--you  get  the  idea!  And  then  I  added  the  titan  buff acrylic  paint  to  bring  the  color  down  a  bit  (they  are  very  intense),  and  then  I  painted  with  the  acrylic  inks  that  you  see  there--there's  the  FW brand  there  and  the  Liquitex--the  Liquitex  is  my  favorite.  I  spread  the  inks  around  with  a  paintbrush  and then  immediately  sprayed  it  with  the  91%  alcohol--

...very  cool  effect...

Next  was  adding  some  of  those  papers  of  mine--

And  now  comes  the part  when  I  forget  to take  photos of  my  progress,  because  this  is  when  my  muse  takes  over.   I  knew  that  I  wanted  cupcakes  on  here  so  I  sketched  them  on  with  a  water  soluble  pencil.   There's  lots  out  there  in  the  market  but  my  favorite  is  General's  Sketch  and  Wash  pencil.    You  can  sketch  your  design,  and  keep  'erasing'  with  water  until  your  happy  with  it.  Once you  start  painting,  the  pencil  marks  will  bleed,  but  will get  lost  in  the  paint.

For  the  finishiing  touches--

I  added   a  little  stamping  around,  and I  shaded  the  paper  with  a  black  pitt  pen.   I  added  more  paper--

...for  a  border  on  top  and  some  more  paint  to  the  background  with  some  stamped  butterflies--this  part  is  very  intuitive  for  me,  and  I  just  keep  going  (with  no  thought  of  a  camera  in  mind)

Last  part (after  I sealed  it with  a  gloss  varnish)--

...adding  the  knobs.

So  with  even  more  scraps  left  yet--I  kept  going--

...mostly  painting--but  you'll  see  some  of  my  papers  here  and  there.   

All  of  these  pieces  are  going  with  me  in  a  couple  of  weeks  to  my  next  show  in  Canton,  Ohio.   I  enjoy  this  time  of  year,  but  sometimes  there's  just  a  bit  of  pressure  trying  to  keep  up  with  my  show  schedule  (I  always  seem  to  bite  off  more  then  I  can  chew  : )  But   I  love  getting  out  and  visiting  friends  that  I  haven't  seen  in  a  while,  and  I  always  appreciate  the  support  of  people  who  come  to  these  shows  and  choose  to  purchase  from  us  artists--helping  us  continue  to  do  what  we  love  to do  most.
