Back To Painting

I've  been  pretty  busy  around  here,  but  I've  had  time  to  do  what  I  enjoy   a  LOT--painting.   So  here's  my  first  painting  of  the  year  (but  not  the  last!)

I  started  out  by  collaging  book  pages  on to  a  wood  surface--

and  then  I  forgot  to  take  a  picture  of  what  my  next  step  was,  but  basically  I  sketched  in  my  design--which  was  elephants--here  it  is  partially  done  (when  I  remembered  to  take  a  picture)

I  added  some  texture  on  the  ears  with  some  molding  paste--love  this  technique--

…..and  I  finished  it  with  some  collage  (the  ground  and  sun)  with  a vintage  map--

really  happy  with  these  2--one  of  my  favorite  subjects  to  paint!

Art Retreat at the Lake 2016

I  had  so  much  fun  teaching  at  the  2-day Art  Retreat  at  the  Lake  this  year  in  beautiful  Mayville,  NY  at  Chautauqua  Lake--the  setting  is  wonderful.   And  just  like  last  year  we  went  crazy  with  papers,  paint,  and,, stencils.

And  my  favorite  part is  how  each  person's  art  is  what  comes  from  inside  of  them--

A  great  group  of  ladies--very  diverse,  but  the  same  in  our  love  for  creating.

So  when  I  was  there,  here's  the  piece  I  was  using  to  demonstrate  on--

A  lot got covered  up--but  that's  okay  with  me--half  the  fun  is  playing  with  the  paint,  and  taking  your  time.  I'm  loving  the  end  result...

My  only  complaint  is  that  those  2  days  went  way  too  fast!

Whimsy Birds Adventure Painting

I've  been  painting  up  a  storm  here--having  fun  with  these  quirky  little  birds  that  I've  been  creating.  They've  been  making  friends  and  exploring.......

This  is  one  of  my  favorite  ways  of  painting--starting  out  making  a  background--in  an  intuitive  way--

A  lot  of  it  gets  covered  up,  but  I  always  leave  some  of  it  for  the  final  design--

So....in  the  end,  after  all  of  their  fun,  these  little  birdies  are  back  home  again--

Intuitive Painting

Painting  with  your  intuition--I  have  a  real  big  problem  with  that.  When  I  try,  I  get  more  frustrated--I  usually  will  end  up  with  some  kind  of  art  that  I'm  happy  with--basically  you  don't  stop  adding  layers  or  whatever  until  your  happy  with  it.   But  you're  supposed  to  enjoy  the  process  or  'journey',  and  I  don't,  which  means  I  like  to  have  a  plan  before  I  start  anything--just  the  way  my  mind  works.

And  then  came  along  week  6  of  Life Book  with  Tam's  lesson,  it  is  exactly  the  type  of  'intuitive'  painting  that  fits  me.   I  really  don't  want  to  get  into  the  details  too  much,  since  this  was  Tamara  Laporte's  technique  taught  to  us--but  all  I  can  say  is  that  if  you're  looking  for  a  diverse  mixed  media  year  long  class  with  many  different  familiar  artists--then  this  is  the  place  for  you.

So  a  little  peek  of  the WIP  for  my  first  piece  that  came  out  of  this  lesson--

If  you're  not  familiar  with  Life  book--the  basis  is  to  make    journal  pages  from  the  lessons  you  learn each  week,  and  at  the  end  of  the  year,  you  put  them  together  to  make  a  journal--Life Book 2015.    But  I  really  don't  journal  in  this  way  ( I  really  don't  journal  much  at  all)--so  in  my  way--I  put  it  on  canvas--

(my  way  of  journaling)--but  back  to  this  particular  lesson--I  like  to  call  it  a  planned  intuitive  painting,  if  that  makes  sense.   There  was  a  step-by-step  process  to  this  piece,  but  by  the  end,  you  just  get  into  the  flow,  and I  got  out  of  my  own  way   and  really  let  my  intuition  take  over--I  loved  painting  this  way.

A New Start to Finish with New Textured Hand-painted Papers

Been  super  busy--really  getting  ready for  my  summer  shows--but  I  decided  to  take  some  time  for  my neglected  blog  by  showing  you  my  latest  piece,  and  a  little  bit  of  a  tell-all  on  how  I  made  it.   So  here's  my  latest  piece--

Oh--I  just  love  these  vibrant  colors!

But  I'll  take  you  back  to  the  beginning--I  got  out  my  110  cardstock  paper  (bought  it  at  Staples),  and  my  gel  medium  and  molding  paste.....and  a  texture  tool.....and  a  stencil.

The  orange  one  on  top  was  what  I  used  my  molding  paste  for--just  laid  my  stencil  over  the  un-painted  paper  and  scraped  the  paste  over  the  stencil  with  a  palette  knife.   And  then  when  it  was  dry,  I  just  added  my  paint--lots  of  layers  for  the  depth--that's  why  I  love  using  this  cardstock--it  will  stand  up  to  anything!

And  the  bottom  two,  I  just  randomly  applied  a  fairly  heavy  coat  of  gel  medium  over  the  paper,  and  used  my  texture  tool (a  hair  pick)  to  make  random  designs.   When  dry, I  added  my  paints  and  stencils--really  turned  out  great.

Still  going  for  texture  with  the  corrugated  cardboard  and  the  textured  wallpaper,  and  love  this  book  page.   I  found  the  book  at  a  recent  garage  sale--it's  like  6 x 20--very  cool  size.

So  next...........

....time  to  start  playing  with  this  10 x 20  gallery  canvas.

The  start  of  it--

I  collaged  pages  from  one  of  my  favorite  books  (another  garage  sale  find  from years  ago--I  use  it  ALL  the  time)  with  Golden  Matte  Medium,  and  then  added  the  yellow  wash  of  paint  to  it.

Getting  my  'frame'  on  it--

...with  all  of  these  wonderfully-textured  papers.

And  then  I  added  the  main  design  (the  birds).  And  then  I  like  to  outline  my  collaged  papers  with  my  Faber-Castell  black  brush  pitt  pen.   It  really  makes  everything  pop--

and  it  gives  it  that  stained  glass  look

And  I  didn't  forget  about  the  sides  either!

And  that's  how  I  did  it!   I'll  call  this  post  part  1--I'll  show  you  more  in  my  'part  2'  post.

Scatter Love

That's  what  I  naming  my  latest  painting  (for obvious  reasons).   In  the  middle  of  all  of  my  circus  art  from  last  week,  I  just  had  the  urge  to  stop,  get  out  my  paints,  pens,  and  oil  and  chalk  pastels--and  just  start  playing  around  on  a  10  x 20  canvas.

 

 

 

 

I  started  it  not  really  knowing  what  my  plan  was,  but  as  I  kept  going--it  kind  of  told  me  what  to  do--I  guess  all  you  have  to  do  is  listen  to  your  muse--and  the  next  thing  she  told  me  was  to  use  one  of  my faces  that  I  recently drew  in  my  sketchbook--

 

 

 

I  drew  her  when  were  driving  to  Disney,  and  I  Really  liked  how  she  came  out--I  knew  that  I  would  be  using  her  in  my  art  in  some  way  or  another--so  I  printed  her  image  out  on  to  a  dictionary  page--

I  have  to  say  that  my  first  love  is  definitely  painting!

 

But  I'm  putting  my  art-making  on  hold  for  a  second  time,  because  we're  going  away  again--but  this  time  only  for  a  few  days--but  a  very  exciting  few  days.  We  are  headed  for  the   Springfield  Antique  and  Flea  Market  Extravaganza --this  is  a  Pinterest  link,  and  it  has  some  great  photos  of  the   market.   This  show  is  listed  as  one  of  top  ten  flea  markets  to visit  with  over  2500  vendors  all  in  one  location--about  an  hour  away  from  Columbus,  Ohio.   We've  never  been  there  before,  but  it  looks  VERY  promising,  and  I  can't  wait!!
