Brand New Art--Sun and Moon

This  last month  was  not  a  fun  one--I  fell  and  fractured  my  wrist--the  only  good  thing  about  it  was  that  it  was  my  left  one.   I'm  restricted  in  what  I  can  do, but  thankfully  I  can  still  paint,  which  has  been  the  best  therapy!  A  little  slide  show  of  what  I've  been  up  to--Only  a  portion,  because  I  have  been  painting  like  crazy!!

So,  needless  to  say,  glad  January  is  past  me  and  hoping  by  the  end  of  February  this  cast  will be  off  of  me--I'll  never  take  my  left  hand  for  granted  again!!  Hope  you  all  can  find  the  time  to  do  what  makes  you  happy--it  sure  does  make  a  difference!

New Quirky Bird Paintings

Been  painting  some  quirky  birds--they  make  me smile--

I  call  them  my  gossip  girls  :-)

It's  going  to  start  getting  busy  around  here--show  season  soon,  but  first----I'll  be  heading  to  the  Brimfield  Flea  market  in  a  couple  of  weeks--can't  wait!!

My Painting Process From Start to Finish

In   a  bit  of  a  condensed  form,  here's  how  I  sometimes  go  about  in  creating  a  piece.  I  have  trouble  with  being  intuitive.  I  most  times  have  to  have  a  plan,  so  this  is  where  my  sketchbook  comes  in handy.  I  have  lots  of  them  now  filled  with  sketches  and  ideas  that  come  to  mind.  They  help  me  a  lot  when  I  need  a  little  inspiration,  because  they  go  back  years,  and  I  like  to  just  go  through  them  and  see  how  I've  progressed--much  like  an  art  journal.   Here's  how  I  start--

First  comes  the  sketch  to  which  I  draw  on  to  my  painted  background  that  I  made  on,  in  this  case,  a  wood  cradle  board.   The  only  real  intuitive  process  I  have  is  the  background--I  work  fast  and  just  add  colors  that  appeal  to  me  and  layers  of  different  marks  using  different  mark-making  tools  and of  course,  stencils.  I  use  a  water  soluble  pencil  for  the  initial  sketch,  and  once  I'm  happy  with  it,  I  go  over  it  with  a  Faber-Castell  black  pitt pen.

Next  is  when  I  start  to  paint  in  my  design--

--leaving  some  of  my  original  background  for  the  foreground  to  add  to  the  design

I  made  lots  of  texture  with  this  starting with  my  first  background  layer  of  gesso.  I  applied  it  to  the  surface  fairly  heavy,  and  used  a  comb  and  credit  card  for  swirls,  making  sure  that  it  was  completely  dry  before  I  added  the  next  layer  of  paint.

A Step by Step Tutorial--Painting in Layers

Art Retreat at the Lake 2016

I  had  so  much  fun  teaching  at  the  2-day Art  Retreat  at  the  Lake  this  year  in  beautiful  Mayville,  NY  at  Chautauqua  Lake--the  setting  is  wonderful.   And  just  like  last  year  we  went  crazy  with  papers,  paint,  and,, stencils.

And  my  favorite  part is  how  each  person's  art  is  what  comes  from  inside  of  them--

A  great  group  of  ladies--very  diverse,  but  the  same  in  our  love  for  creating.

So  when  I  was  there,  here's  the  piece  I  was  using  to  demonstrate  on--

A  lot got covered  up--but  that's  okay  with  me--half  the  fun  is  playing  with  the  paint,  and  taking  your  time.  I'm  loving  the  end  result...

My  only  complaint  is  that  those  2  days  went  way  too  fast!

Start to Finish Painting

Watch  my  process--I  started  out  with  a  12 x 24 wood cradle  board.

My  favorite  are  the  deep  edged  ones,  and  they  come  in  all  sizes.   I'm  really liking  working  on  wood  a  lot  more  than  canvas  lately  especially for  collage  (less chance  for  air  bubbles).

So  first,  I  made  a  background--

 This  is  a  fun  part--just  play  and  experiment,  because  if  you  don't  like  it,  you  can  paint  over  it--just  like  painting  papers--you  can't  mess  up.

And  this  is  where  my  background  becomes  part  of  my  foreground--

.....and  then  adding  in  the  details...

And  still  more  playing--this  time  I'm  seeing  elephants--

These  guys  needed  to  be  on  a  box,  and  I  had  the  perfect  cigar  box  for  them.

This  is  such  a  fun  way  to  paint--you  can  keep  it  abstract  or  keep  going--there's  no  right  or  wrong.

Whimsy Birds Adventure Painting

I've  been  painting  up  a  storm  here--having  fun  with  these  quirky  little  birds  that  I've  been  creating.  They've  been  making  friends  and  exploring.......

This  is  one  of  my  favorite  ways  of  painting--starting  out  making  a  background--in  an  intuitive  way--

A  lot  of  it  gets  covered  up,  but  I  always  leave  some  of  it  for  the  final  design--

So....in  the  end,  after  all  of  their  fun,  these  little  birdies  are  back  home  again--
