The Month of March--Creatively Speaking

WOW--what  a  difference  a  month  makes!  By  now,  we  all  know  about  the  COVID-19  virus,  and  I  know  that  anyone  reading  this  knows   to  STAY  HOME!--enough  said--the  internet  has  been  flooded  with  what's  going  on.   So  for  now,  we  need  to  find  diversions  and  adapt  to  life  as  it  is  for  the  time  being.  My  diversion  and  also  my  therapy  is  art,  and  I'm  so  happy  for  that!    That's  what  this  blog  is  all  about--art  making,  and  let  me  tell  you  that's  what  has  been  occupying  my  time--no  more  talk--here's  what  I've  been  up  to--

I  have  piles  and  piles  of  scraps  of  my  painted  papers--I'm  not  going  to  let  them  go  to  waste--

and  here's  what  I  did  with  them--

with  the  help  of  embellishments,  and also  a  plain  IKEA  mirror.   Still going  with  the  papers,  I  reversed  a  6 x 12  cradle  board  to  turn  into  a  shadowbox--

and  still  more--another  paper  mosaic--

I  love  the  look  of  tile  mosaics--this  is  my  version

After  a  while  though,  I  need  to  get  out  my  paints  and  paint.  So  that's  what  I  did  on  a  wood  cigar  box--

some  more  poppies!

Changing  gears--as  I  was  saying  in  my  last  post,  I  now  have  time  to  'clean'  my  house,  which  always  turns  into  more  of  a  discovery  of  'art  supplies' and  I  get  side-tracked  from  my  cleaning--some  new  assemblage  art  came  out  of  my  house  cleaning--

Circus  time!

my  favorite  kind  of  art--you'll  never  see  me  at  an  actual  circus--but  I  LOVE  circus-themed  art  

every  good circus  has  a  fortune  teller--right?

So  when  I  made  this  circus  art  is  when  the  quarantine  started,  and  that's  when  I  decided  to  get  out  my  Strathmore  mixed  media  journal  that  I  got  back  in  December.   I  have  time  for  it  now  and  I  want  to  go  back  to  making  my  journal  faces  again  which  I  used  to  do  years  ago--just  for  me  with  no  critiquing--whatever  comes  out  on  the page is  what  comes  out--

Okay,  I  know  this  is  a  bit  lengthy,  but  it's  been  a  looong  month  at  home--so  more  painting  to  show  you--

along  with  paper  mosaics--

and  that  brings  us  to  here--the  end  of  March--on  a  sad  note,  we  were  planning  to  leave  in  a  couple  of  days  to  visit  our  son  in  Florida,  and  also  going  with  us  was  going  to  be  my  daughter  and  her  husband  and  my  grandson  --we  were  going  to go  to  Disneyworld  :-(  

Better  times  will  be  coming  and  when  they're  here,  we  will  be  making  that  trip!

I  hope  I've  inspired  you  to  take  some  time  for  yourself  and  do  what  makes  you  happy--no  matter  what  it  is--it  (without  a  doubt)  makes  a  difference!

Brand New Art--Sun and Moon

This  last month  was  not  a  fun  one--I  fell  and  fractured  my  wrist--the  only  good  thing  about  it  was  that  it  was  my  left  one.   I'm  restricted  in  what  I  can  do, but  thankfully  I  can  still  paint,  which  has  been  the  best  therapy!  A  little  slide  show  of  what  I've  been  up  to--Only  a  portion,  because  I  have  been  painting  like  crazy!!

my  favorite  subjects  to  paint--the  sun,  followed  by  the  moon...

  

And  a  couple  of  them  turned  into  greeting  cards--

These  cards  are  5 x 7  and  blank  inside--also  great  to  frame--they're  available  in  my  Etsy  shop  along  with  more  of  my  art  on  cards--you  can  find  them  HERE 

So,  needless  to  say,  glad  January  is  past  me  and  hoping  by  the  end  of  February  this  cast  will be  off  of  me--I'll  never  take  my  left  hand  for  granted  again!!  Hope  you  all  can  find  the  time  to  do  what  makes  you  happy--it  sure  does  make  a  difference!

Recycled Art With a Function

That's  what  I've  been  doing  these  days--taking  my  art  and  making  some  new  art  from  it.  A  couple  posts  back  I  talked  about  my  latest  poppy  painting,  but  I  didn't  stop  there--I  made  another  one--

 

 

And  since  I  had  another  show  to  get  ready  for,  I  decided  to  do  more  with  these  poppies,  and  something  that  I  knew  would  appeal  to  shoppers--

 

 

 

What  else?--but  a  mirror--always  a  favorite  of  the  customers.   But  I  didn't  stop  there  with  these  pretty  flowers--

 

 

.....a  new  box--not  only  are  these  art  pieces,  but  like  the  post  title  says--they  have  a  function  to  them,  which  people  appreciate.

 

So  then  I  went  back  into  my  'archives'  of  art  and  found  this  piece--

 

 

.....thinking  about  a  mirror  again...

taking  little  snippets  and  making  a  new  scene...

 

 

 

--and  even  the  sun  is  from  another  art  piece  of  mine  that  I  made  a  while  back.

 

So  I  took  all  of  those  pieces  with  me  this  last  weekend  to  my  show,  and  I'm  happy  to  say  that  they  all  SOLD!   Even  these  2--

 

 

 

So  happy  to  know  that  these  have  all  found  their  homes.

 

NOW--time  to  get  back  to  my  studio--one  more  show  for  this  season!

29 Faces 12

So  these  faces  are  oldies  but  goodies,  and  I've  turned  them  into  an  all  new  piece  of  art.   They  started  out  here--

 

 

 

....on  a  table top  that  I  painted  a  little  over  2  years  ago.   The  piece  sold,  but  I'm  so  glad  that  I  took  photos  of  it.   I  got  a  close-up  of  the  sun  and  moon--

 

 

....printed  it  out  on  my  printer  to  the  size  I  wanted,  and  made  a  whole  new  little  art  piece  for  day #12--

 

 

 

These  2  are  now  on  a  6 x 6 gallery  wrapped  canvas--I  added  some  stamping,  and  embellishing,  and  finished  it  with  a  cool  little  knob  on  top.

Sweet Dreams

I   dream  a  LOT,  and  lately  I've  been  having  some  weird  ones--ones  I  don't  really  like--you  know,  the  kind  that  startle  you  awake  and  you're  glad  that  they  were  just  dreams.   So  I  decided  to  make  some  dreams  that  I  would  like  to have.......

I  dream  in  color,  but  not  quite  as  vibrant  as  this....

When  I  think  of  how  I  want  my  art  to  come  across--this  is  how  I  think  of  it.    I  don't  want  it to  be  realistic  and  perfect.   I  want  it  to  be  like  something  you'd  see   in  a  dream--colorful  and  fun--the  same  reason  why  people  read  the  books  that  they  do  or  go  to  those  movies  that  take  you  to  a  special  place  for  a  couple  of  hours   (me  being  one  of  them  : )   This  to  me,  is  what  art  is--something  that  makes  you  smile.

.....and  you  know  which  bird  is  my  favorite--the  one  who's  not  following  the  other  birds,  but   the  one  who's  following  her  dreams--I  like  that!

....all  sweet  dreams......

More Fun--More Layers.....and a Workshop

Yes,  I  had  so  much  fun  with  my  layered  piece  that  I  decided  to  do  it  again  on  another  12 x 16  canvas.  First  layer--

This  butterfly  stencil  is  actually  a  wood  cutout  that  I  found  at  Michaels--and  they  had  a  wide  variety  too--a  great  effect  when  you  spray  paint  over  them.   Second  layer--

Actually,  there's  probably  a  lot  of  layers  here--this  is where  I  play  around  and  try  out different  techniques,  just  to  experiment  to  see  what  works  and  what  doesn't,  knowing  that  it  will  be  all  covered  up,  but  noting  any  color  combo  or  technique  that  I  want  to  remember.    And  then  one  more  layer..

I  probably  could  of  left  it  as  it  was,   but  at  this  point,  I  had  a  plan,  and  here's  how  it  ended  up--

I've  really  been  enjoying  making art  like  this,  because  I  work  on it  and  then  leave  it  for  a  day  or  so,  and  keep  coming  back  and  in  the  meantime  I  work  on  another  piece  of  art  completely  different  than  this.......like  the  one  from  my  new  workshop  that  I'm  taking  being  taught  by  the  very  talented   Joyce.   It's  her  Fresco Online  Workshop.   I'm  not  used  to  working  on  this  type  of  surface,  but  when  she  breaks  it  down,  it  made  me  wonder  what  I  was  so  afraid  of.....plus  it's  a  great  lesson  on  using  watercolors  on  this  type  of  surface,  which  I've  fallen  in  love  with.

the  layers  of  watercolor  seep  into  the  plaster,  and  when  you  apply  it  like  this,  it's  a  very  forgiving  medium  to use--it's  very  relaxing--it's  like  sketching--you  kind  of  get  lost  in  it

And  I  love  the  texture  that  you  end  up  with  too--

A New Piece---Step by Step

I   haven't  done  this  in  a  while--taking  photos  of  my  work  in progress.   You  know  how  that  is--you  get  so  caught  up  in  the  process  that  you  don't  want  to  stop  with  your  camera.   But  this  time,  I  didn't  really  have  a  plan,  and  wasn't  sure  what  to  do  next,  so  I  took  my  time,  and  tried  not  to  worry  about  it  like  so  many  of  you  can  do.   So  here  it  is  one  step  at  a  time--

Started  with  dictionary  text  and  then  added  an  acrylic  color  wash.

And  then  I  stamped  on  ozo  paper  and  collaged  that  over  top---ozo  paper  is  a  transparent  paper,  but  it's  more  durable  than  tissue  paper,  so  as  you  can  see  the  other  layers  underneath  can  still be  seen.

Next  came  sewing  pattern  tissue  paper,  and  then  random  stenciling.

....added  some  more  color...and  now  what?? 

This  is  when  I  started  to  have  a  plan...

...and  started  playing  around  with  acrylics  and  my  oil  pastels--boy---I  really  love  my  oil  pastels!

And  then  this  is  when  my  little  art  piece  told  me  what  to  do  next--

......and  I  knew  that  these  2.....

....were  the  perfect  "pear"!

P.S.  Leo  update....not  going  as  well  as  I  thought  it  would  be.   For  one  thing  the  feeding  tube  isn't  working  like  it  should  be  (story  of  my  life)--back  to  the  vet's  next  week  when  he'll  be  there.   So  in  the  meantime,  it's  taking  me  FOR....EVER   to  get  the  liquid  down  the  tube,  and  I  know  that  my  daughter  who  was  going  to  watch  him  this  weekend  for  me  would  never  devote  this  much  time  to  him.   Remember--my  first  art  fair  of  the  season?--well  I  cancelled  it--I  know,  I'm  crazy--right?

P.S.  P.S.   I  have  been  visiting  everyone   but  on  certain  blogs  where  the  comment  section  is  on  the  same  page---I  still  can't  comment!!!!   Any  suggestions  on  how  to  fix  this?-- since  apparently  Blogger  doesn't  care.
