My Art Retreat in September

 I  prepared  for it  all  year,  and  in a  second, it  seems, it's  over, and  it  was  so  much  fun  and especially  needed  this  year!  There were  a  total  of  6  of  us, and  the  just  the  right  number  for  a  comfortable  working  distance  from each  other,  with  this  year's  weird  circumstances.

and  the  best  part  were  all of  these art supplies   together  and  being  able  to   play  for  3  days (leaving all of our other outside problems at the door)--

This year was all about faux encaustic and polymer clay.  I became interested in polymer clay when I saw that I could use it as an element in my mixed media art pieces, and I wanted to show the versatility of this very forgiving medium.  Here are the results of the class--

The best part about this is how their creavity took over and helped them express themselves.  I  showed  them  the techniques  and  told them to stand  our of their own way, and that's what they did.   

This  retreat went way  too  fast  that's for sure--can't  wait  till next year!

 

August--A Mini Show and Tell, and an Art Retreat--Getting Ready!

 So  August  was  a  little  bit  of  everything  with  my  art-making,  not  to  mention, I'm  a  little  down  watching  summer  come  to  an  end  (however  I  love  Fall!)  I  started  out  getting  out  my  paints  and  paper  and  not  over-thinking......

I  used  110lb  cardstock  that  I  painted  first  with black  gesso  and then  I took   some  of  my  favorite  stencils  with  bright  contrasting  colors--love  the  look!

Next  I  experimented  with  my  gel  plate.   I  first  got  my  background  color  on  the  plate with  stencils  and  different  colors--

and  then  I  made  templates  to  use  as  masks  for  the  plate--

--added  a  solid  color  (in  this  case, purple)  and  laid  down  the  original  paper  and  here  was  my  result--

I  decided  to  use  my Posca  Pen (a  new  love, because  it's  permanent  and  it's  paint!)  to outline  some  of  the  images.  So  what  I  did  after  was  basically  cleaning  up the  gel  plate.  The  image  of  the  masks  were  still on  the  plate  and  they  were  dry.  So  I  knew  that  they  would  transfer  on  to  the  paper  nicely  if  I  added  more  paint  on top of  them  on the  gel  plate,  and  I  really  like  the  result-(this was done on  plain white paper)--

These  papers  were  practice  for  a  little  bit  of what  we  will  be  doing  at  our  Art  Retreat  coming  in  early  September.  We  have  this  retreat  every  year  and  we  really  enjoy  coming  together  for  the  purpose  of  nothing  else  but  to  make   art  for  3  solid  days.   This  year  will  be  a  bit  different,  to  say  the  least,  but  it  is  happening.  There  will  be  a  total  of  8  of  us,  and we'll each  have  our  own  8  foot  table  at  a  wonderful  location  not  too far  from  my  home .

This  year  I  will  be  teaching  2  separate  projects.  The  first  one  will  be  faux  encaustics.  I've  never  worked  with  real  encaustic  before,  mainly  because  of  the  cost,  so  I  did  some  researching  on  the  faux  part,  and  I  found  one  technique that  worked  for  me,  and  here's  the  result--

this  was  made  with layers  of  gel  medium--great  effect!!  And  here's  another  variation--

I love how the layers come through.

And the next project is going to involve my new venture with polymer  clay.  I  wanted  to  learn  how  to  use  polymer  clay  so  I  could  add  it  to  my  mixed  media  pieces.   Here's  the  piece  we will be  working  on--

--and  here's  where  painting  papers  come  in.  They  are  the  background  of  the  piece  and  the  polymer  clay  accents  are  the  addition.   When   I  first  started  teaching  myself  this  medium  I  wanted  to  transform  my painted  whimsy  art  into  clay  form.   

I  made  the  birds  in  my  art  journal  first  and  then  I  made  them  into  polymer  clay.

But  this  project  isn't  exclusive--I'll  bring  some  more  variations  with  me--

I  want  to  show  how  versatile  polymer  clay  is--basically  you  can  bring  your  own  voice  to  it.

--some  more  playing  around  with  this  very  fun  and  very  forgiving  medium.

So  for  the  most  part,  this  is  what has  been  keeping  me  busy  the  last  few  weeks,  along  with  other  art  here  and  there.  My  main  focus,  however,  is  the  art  retreat.  It's  important  right  now  to  keep  yourself  healthy  in  these  times,  but  also  to  keep  your  mind  healthy  too  and  for  me  that's  some  art  therapy!  Stay  safe  everyone.

Get Inspired

 My  favorite  surface  to  work  on   these  days  is wood.   So  here  is  how all  of  my  latest  art  started  out--

The  long  tall  board  I  bought  at  Lowes --it  started  out  as  an  8ft.  board  and  I  had  my  husband  cut  it  in half  into  the  shape  of  a  house--so  now  I  have  2  house  shaped  boards--very  inexpensive.

So  the  first  thing  I  did  was  find  some  collage  papers  for  it.  I  didn't  paint  any papers this  time.  I  figured  it  was  time  to  use  some of  these thousands  of  scrapbook  papers,  book  pages, maps--you  name  it  that  I  have  been  gathering  all  of  these  years.

This  piece  resulted  from  a  class  that  I  took  last  year  at  the  art  retreat  that  I  taught at  also  from  Carrie  Tredo.---she's  a  very  talented  artist,  and  I'm  happy to  say  that  her  and  I  will be  teaching  again  this  September  in  Mayville,  NY  on  beautiful  Lake  Chautauqua  on  Sept.  5-7.  You  can  find  it's  facebook  HERE

This  is  on  an  8 x 8  deep  edged  cradle  board  inspired  by  Finnabair.  I  found  her  work  years  ago,  and  immediately  fell  in  love  with  this  dimensional  style  of  art-making.

All  of  this  resulted,  I  have  to  say,  from  trying  to  clean  out  my  art  space,  which  kind  of  failed  miserably,  but  not  really,  because  I  kept  finding  all  of  these  'supplies'  that  helped  bring  these pieces  together  and  gave  me  some  great  inspiration.  You  should  try  this  too--if  you  happen  to  be  in  a  slump--'clean'--it  has  its  benefits!

New Workshop for 2017

I'll  be  back  teaching  again  in  Mayville, NY in September  at  Art Retreat at the Lake .   It's  a  ways  away  but  this  is  the  time  of  the  year  when  I  can  take  my  time  creating  and  planning  for  the  workshop,  being  not  bogged  down  with  shows  and  life  in general.    This  year  I'll  be  teaching  for  2  days  again  starting  out  with  what  else--but  painting  papers--it's  the  best  way  for  me  to  show  everyone  how  to  warm  up  and  get  those  creative  juices  going.

and  texturing  papers  with  a  Sizzix.   I  got  my  Sizzix  a  few  years  ago,  and  haven't  touched  it  in  a  while,  so  I  decided  to  make  some  embossed  papers  with  it  and  then  paint  them--

...they  turned  out  great!

We'll  also  be  embossing  metal  (which  is  so  fun  to do).  Here's  what  we'll  be  making  with  it--

.....painted  papers,  textured  papers,  embossed  metal,  plus  added  molding paste  and  embellishments  for  even  more  dimension....

Art Retreat at the Lake 2016

I  had  so  much  fun  teaching  at  the  2-day Art  Retreat  at  the  Lake  this  year  in  beautiful  Mayville,  NY  at  Chautauqua  Lake--the  setting  is  wonderful.   And  just  like  last  year  we  went  crazy  with  papers,  paint,  and,, stencils.

And  my  favorite  part is  how  each  person's  art  is  what  comes  from  inside  of  them--

A  great  group  of  ladies--very  diverse,  but  the  same  in  our  love  for  creating.

So  when  I  was  there,  here's  the  piece  I  was  using  to  demonstrate  on--

A  lot got covered  up--but  that's  okay  with  me--half  the  fun  is  playing  with  the  paint,  and  taking  your  time.  I'm  loving  the  end  result...

My  only  complaint  is  that  those  2  days  went  way  too  fast!
