What I Did in February

I'm  having  trouble  updating  this  blog   (since Facebook came  into  the  picture),  so  I'm  trying  a  new  'thing'.  I'm  going  to  post  once  a  month  of  what  I've  been  up  to  creatively.

In  the  first  week  I  had  my  paints  out  and  I  always  get  Spring  fever  this  time  of  year  (if  you  live  in  a  cold  weather  climate,  you  know  what  I'm  talking  about)--so  I  painted  Spring--

Once  I  had  the  paint  out  I  did  what  I  always  do  and  started  playing  with  it.  I  do  that  with  mostly  white  cardstock  (110lb) --I  don't  need   to  think  about  it  and  try  different  techniques--if  I  don't  like  it--it's  just  paper--no  big  deal.

So  with  those  papers and  one  of  my  favorite  surfaces to  work  on  and  repurpose--a  cabinet  door--I  made  some  new  neighborhoods--Love  making  houses--

And at the end of the month I had a request from a poppy lover for 3 different pieces--

These were all started with a layer of collage (text pages) and then I painted over them with acrylics.  I  like  the  texture  the  printed  text  gives  under  the  paint.

In  between  all  of  this,  I've  been  cleaning  and  decluttering  my  art  space  (which  in  my  case,  is  my  whole  house)  and  I  have  been  listing  in  my  Etsy  shop--my  latest  listings--

So  that's  my  art  month  in  a  blog  post.   This is  not  my  favorite  time  of  year--weather wise--I  hate  the cold,  and  I  become  a  hermit,  but   it's  also   in  a  way, my  favorite.   There's  not  a  lot  going  on,  so  I  spend  more  time  in  my  studio,  which  is  definitely  my  happy  place!

My Etsy Shop is Open

Well, my Etsy shop has always been open, but I've restocked it with lots of new art--

…..some collage pieces  with my hand-painted papers and also some 6 x 6 squares with images of my previous cat art--

and recently I've started offering blank greeting cards at my shows, and now I'm offering them in my Etsy shop--professionally printed--$4.50 each--

plus more art

….a little of mix of everything.

Table Painting

I  don't  do  this  as  often  as  I  would  like  to--paint  furniture--in  this  case  2  very  different  tables  that  I  found  at  flea  markets.  The  first  one  was  one  of  my  favorites  to  find--

a  typewriter  table--definitely  a  memory  from  the  past.  I  love  finding  these  tables  and giving  them  a  new  life--

Next--

a  sewing  machine  table--I  gave  it  some  color--

And  then  I  took  my  new  art  and  repurposed  that  on  to  a  cigar  box--

This  is  definitely  my  favorite  way  of  making  art--taking  those  forgotten  items  from  the  past  life,  give  them  a  facelift  and  bringing  them  back  out  into  the  world  again.

Steps of My Latest Rooster Painting

This  is  just  a  short  post of  my  latest  painting  that  was  SO  much  fun  to  create.   A  few  years  ago  I  had  found  this  wood  board  at  a  flea  market.  It's  20 x 20  with  a  2  inch  raised  edge  on  3  sides--not  exactly  sure  what  it  was  meant  for,  but  for  me,  painting  on  it  was  the  thing  to  do.   My  first  step--

I  painted  the board  with  my  background  colors  adding  and  taking  away  and  a  little  stenciling.  This  is  the  warm-up  part  and  the  most  forgiving,  because  if  you're  not  happy  with  it--just  cover  it  up  with  more  paint.  And  then  I  added  the  row  of  paper  houses  across  the  bottom.

Next  came  my  rooster--

and  then  some  texture  and  more  collage--

Some  finishing  details  with  some  black  paint  to  define  the  edges  and  add  some  shading--

And  the  completed  piece--

This  piece  came  together  very  easily  for  me--no  struggling  on  this  one--most  likely  because  I  enjoy  painting  on  wood,  and  I  love  painting  roosters!  It's  always  better  when  you're  able to  do  what  you  love  most--whatever  it  is  :-)

New DecoArt Tutorial

Wall Art For Your Home

I  love  playing  around  on  watercolor  paper.  It's  fairly  inexpensive  and  because  of  that  I  feel  more  free  to  experiment.   These  2  pieces  were  on  5 x 7  pieces  of  140lb  watercolor  paper.

I  had  2  barnwood-type  frames  that  I  decided  to  paint  to  make  them  more  cohesive  with  these  paintings--

--instant  art  for  your  walls!--with  not  too  much  expense.

I  kept  going  this  time  with  a  larger  piece  of  paper--

I've  had  these  barnwood  frames  for  years  in  various  sizes,  and  when  I  was  playing  around  with  the  paper,  the  idea  came  to  me  to  use  the  frames,  but  give  them  more  of   a  whimsy  style  by  painting  them.

fun  to  do  and  lots  less  stress  by  doing  it  this  way--try  it  yourself--get  some  frames  when  they're  on  sale--and  these look  great  behind  glass  too!

And  now  is  the  time  of  the  year  for  me  to  start  thinking  about  art  shows.  I  have  some  listed  on  my  sidebar,  with  more  coming.  I've  been  taking  my  new  art  and  putting  them  on  6 x 6  canvases  and  cradle  boards--

these  guys  are  the  popular  ones  at  the  shows.......

My Paper Quilt

 I've  been  visiting  Pinterest  lately,  and  if  you've  been  there  too,   you  know  how  it  can  be--you're  looking  for  some  inspiration,  and  3  hours  later,  you're  wondering  where  the  time  went.   Needless  to  say,  I  found  some  great  inspiration  there..  

This  time  it  was  in  the  form  of  art  quilts.   I  really  admire  this  art  form--but  wouldn't  know  what  to  do  with  a  sewing  machine  or  needle  and  thread  if  you  handed  it  to  me. 

So  this  is  my  version  of  an  art  quilt.....my  paper  quilt.

I  started  out  with  my  'fabrics'--

......I  had  an  18 x 18 birch  cradle  board  that  I  decided  to  use  for  my  'quilt'  surface--

I  took  my  time  when  I  pieced  this  'quilt'  together--I  thoroughly  enjoyed  the  process  of  putting  it  together.   And  in  the  end......

Guest Designer Over At Stencil Girl Products

Yes, I  have  another  tutorial  to  show  you,  but  you'll  have  to  head  on  over  to  Stencil  Girl  Products  where  I'm  the  guest  designer  today--is  that  not  great  or  what?!   You  can  see  how  I  made  this  box  from  start  to  finish--

This  was  a  fun  one  to  make, and  you  can  see  how  the  stencils  that  I  used  helped  bring  this  design  together.  Remember  to  check  it  out  HERE!

Painting Furniture

I  haven't  done  this  in  a  while,  but  when  I  saw  this  table  at  the  Springfield  flea  market  a  couple  of  weeks  ago,  ideas started  going  through  my  head--

I   forgot  how  fun  it  was  to  transform  a  plain  piece  of  furniture  into a one  of  a  kind  art  piece.

Luckily  I  picked  up  a  bench  too  at  the  flea  market--and,  as  you  can  see,  I  knew  exactly  what  I  could  do  with  it--

And  then  I  did  what  I  always  do--used  my  art  for  some  new  art--

All  of  this  is  going  with  me  next  weekend  for  my  show--Christmas  in  the  Woods  in  Columbiana,  Ohio--very  fun--love  this  show!
