Wall Art For Your Home

I  love  playing  around  on  watercolor  paper.  It's  fairly  inexpensive  and  because  of  that  I  feel  more  free  to  experiment.   These  2  pieces  were  on  5 x 7  pieces  of  140lb  watercolor  paper.

I  had  2  barnwood-type  frames  that  I  decided  to  paint  to  make  them  more  cohesive  with  these  paintings--

--instant  art  for  your  walls!--with  not  too  much  expense.

I  kept  going  this  time  with  a  larger  piece  of  paper--

I've  had  these  barnwood  frames  for  years  in  various  sizes,  and  when  I  was  playing  around  with  the  paper,  the  idea  came  to  me  to  use  the  frames,  but  give  them  more  of   a  whimsy  style  by  painting  them.

fun  to  do  and  lots  less  stress  by  doing  it  this  way--try  it  yourself--get  some  frames  when  they're  on  sale--and  these look  great  behind  glass  too!

And  now  is  the  time  of  the  year  for  me  to  start  thinking  about  art  shows.  I  have  some  listed  on  my  sidebar,  with  more  coming.  I've  been  taking  my  new  art  and  putting  them  on  6 x 6  canvases  and  cradle  boards--

these  guys  are  the  popular  ones  at  the  shows.......

Painting to Make Art or Art Journal Pages or Etc.

That's  what  I've  been  up  to  these  past  couple  of  weeks.   I'll  always  put  art  journal pages  in  my  blog  titles--I  don't  really  have  any  art  journals (just  LOTS  of  idea  sketchbooks),  but  I  know  that  what  I'm  showing  here  could  also  be  great  for  journal  pages--especially  if  you're  just  starting  out  and  trying  new  art  supplies  and  techniques--art  journals  are  a  great  way  to  start--to  learn.

So  on  140lb  cold  press  watercolor  paper  this  is  how  I  warmed  up--

....laid  down  some  paint  with  layers  of  stencils  and  stamping....and  then--

I  first  sketched  a  design  using  my  General's  sketch  and  wash  pencil.   It's  a  water  soluble  pencil--so  if  you  don't  like  what you  draw,  just  take  a  little  water  to  wipe  it  away.   There's  lots  of  pencils  like  this  out  in  the  market,  but  this  one,  for  whatever  reason,  is  my  favorite  one  to  use.    And  then  when  I  liked  what  I  did,  I  went  over  the  pencil  lines  with  my  black  marker  pen  (Faber-Castel  pitt  pen)--then  I  blocked  out  the  design  with  more  acrylic  paint--basically,  painting  the  background  to  bring  the  main  design  out  into  the  foreground.

So  I  kept  going--

I  added  more  paint  (brought  in  the  violet  color)--some  more  design  elements  in  the  tree,  flowers,  and  birds,  added  a  sun.  And  I  also  used  my  Prisma  NuPastel  chalk  sticks.  I  have  a  couple  different  brands  of  chalk  pastels,  but  again,  these  are  my  favorite  to use--just  love  that  rich  color!

lots  of  doodling  this  time--I  call  this  one  "Gossip  Girls"  : )   (I  always  wonder  what  those  birds  are  chirping  about  in  my  neighborhood!)

And  remember  I  said  that  I  had  lots  of  sketchbooks  with  my  ideas  inside--they  always  come  in  handy  for  when  I'm  looking  for  inspiration--

This  one  took  a  little  longer---struggling  with  that  face--but  in  the  end --all  good...

So  this  is  what  I've  been  dong  since  I  last  blogged,  and  oh  yes,  the  most  important  thing---we  have  a  new  grandson!

Anthony Louis  (Tj for short)--8lbs. 3oz.--born  on  April  26,  and  I  was  there  for  the  whole  thing--amazing!!  He's  a  little  doll!

These Are My 'Journal Pages'

That's  what  I  like  to  call  them.   They're  all  on  watercolor  paper,  and  the  reason  I  call  them  that  is   because  since  I'm  just  working  on  basically  a  piece  of  paper (a  real THICK  piece  of  paper)--it  doesn't  feel  as  scary  to  me  as  a  blank  canvas,  and  I  seem  to  be  more  organic  in  what  I'm  doing.   If  I  don't  like  the  outcome,  these  papers  won't  go  to  waste--they'll  be  used  as  collage  paper.   I  ended  up  making  7  pieces......

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

....she's  a  result  from  my  class  that  I  took  from  Christy  Tomlinson--She  Art  3--this  very   cool  technique  of  suggesting  facial  features  with  shading--I  love  her  classes!

 

 

 

 

I  thought  it  was  about  time  that  I  painted  a  turtle  since  I'm  so  obsessed  with  my  real  one  : )

 

 

 

You  know--the  best  things  really  DO  just  happen--I  only  used  7  pieces  of  paper--if  I  didn't  like  how  it  would  be  going--I  would  just  re-paint  until  I  did,  and  since  this  paper  is  140lb  weight--it  can  withstand  anything.    On  all  of  these,  I  used  a  combination  of  acrylics  and  hard  chalk  pastels--Love  these  2  together.

Ready  to  go  with  me  this  summer  to  my  shows--I   just  received  notification  yesterday  that  I  was  accepted  into   another  show  this  summer--a  BIG surprise--this  was  my  first  time  that  I  applied  to  this  one--I've  heard  great  things  about  it.    I've  applied  to  a  lot  more--still  waiting  to  here  from  them--these  shows  aren't  that  easy  to  get  into,  but  I'm  not  taking  any  chances--I'm  getting  ready  with  lots  and  lots  of  art--which  I  love  to  do  anyway!!

 

And  more  thing--what  do  I  do with  new  art  that  I  make?--ALWAYS  make  a  new  box!
