Painting Furniture

It's  been  a  while,  but  I've  been  busy  with  furniture  painting.  I  try  to  find  forgotten  pieces  at  garage  sales  and  flea  markets  during  the  summer  to  update  and  give  a  new  life  to.   Like  this  one--how  it  started...

and  here's  how  it  is  now

and  another  one--this  time  a  cute  little  drop leaf  table--

one more is  a  bench  that I  found--loved  the  way  it  was  painted,  but  I  wanted  to  add  something  to  it--

Poppies--love  painting  these!

….all  finished--I  love  it!

And  as  an  added  bonus, these  poppies  helped  me  make  some  more  art--

..love  when  this  happens--my  art  gave  me  new  art  :-)

Poppy Love

Poppies--one  of  my  favorite  flowers  to  paint!--especially  blue  ones!   I  started  warming  up  with  my  background--

.....and  then  the  poppies--

...and  playing  with  my  latest  favorite  supply--these  fineline  applicators--you  fill  them  with  whatever  you want--I like  to  fill them  with  undiluted  fluid   acrylics.   They'll leave  a  little  texture  on  the  surface  that  way--a  nice  effect.

I  added  more  texture  to  this  one  also  with  molding  paste  through  a  stencil  on  the  sun--

and  one  more  painting  which  included  some  more  poppies--

I'm  really  happy  with  these--they're  coming  with  me  in  my  upcoming  shows.   No  more  painting  for  a  few  days  though--I'm  taking  a  little  vacation  to  Massachusetts--the  Brimfield  Flea  market--if  you  know  flea  markets,  then  you'll  know  that this is  a BIG  one--I'm  excited  for  this,  and  it's  my  first  time  there--hope  to  come  back  home  with  lots  of  goodies!

I'm  been  making  lots  of  art  these  last  few  weeks--the  weather  is  SOOO  cold  (in hibernation mode)--so  this  is  what  I  do  when  it's  like  this--play  in  my  art  room,  with  thoughts  of  getting  ready  for  my  upcoming  show  season.

And,  I've  also  been  loving  my  new  book  by  Jane  Davenport--"Drawing and Painting Beautiful Faces".   She's  been  inspiring  me--

And  this  is  just  a  little bit  of  what  I've  been  up  to.

For  you  local  readers  (PA , NY,  and  Ohio)  I'll be  listing  my  shows  within  the  next  month  on  my  sidebar...and  NEW  this  year--I'm  going  to  be  teaching  a  workshop!  I'm  a  little  nervous,  but  excited  about  it.   We'll  be  painting  our  own  papers  and  them  making  something  with  them--that's  in  September  (I'll  list  that  too).

And  oh  yeah,  what  else  is  keeping  me  busy??

this  little  cutie--my  grandson  Tj--I  watch  him  twice  a  week,  and  he  likes  to  remind  me  that  I'm  not  as  young  as  I  used  to  be  : )

Painting to Make Art or Art Journal Pages or Etc.

That's  what  I've  been  up  to  these  past  couple  of  weeks.   I'll  always  put  art  journal pages  in  my  blog  titles--I  don't  really  have  any  art  journals (just  LOTS  of  idea  sketchbooks),  but  I  know  that  what  I'm  showing  here  could  also  be  great  for  journal  pages--especially  if  you're  just  starting  out  and  trying  new  art  supplies  and  techniques--art  journals  are  a  great  way  to  start--to  learn.

So  on  140lb  cold  press  watercolor  paper  this  is  how  I  warmed  up--

....laid  down  some  paint  with  layers  of  stencils  and  stamping....and  then--

I  first  sketched  a  design  using  my  General's  sketch  and  wash  pencil.   It's  a  water  soluble  pencil--so  if  you  don't  like  what you  draw,  just  take  a  little  water  to  wipe  it  away.   There's  lots  of  pencils  like  this  out  in  the  market,  but  this  one,  for  whatever  reason,  is  my  favorite  one  to  use.    And  then  when  I  liked  what  I  did,  I  went  over  the  pencil  lines  with  my  black  marker  pen  (Faber-Castel  pitt  pen)--then  I  blocked  out  the  design  with  more  acrylic  paint--basically,  painting  the  background  to  bring  the  main  design  out  into  the  foreground.

So  I  kept  going--

I  added  more  paint  (brought  in  the  violet  color)--some  more  design  elements  in  the  tree,  flowers,  and  birds,  added  a  sun.  And  I  also  used  my  Prisma  NuPastel  chalk  sticks.  I  have  a  couple  different  brands  of  chalk  pastels,  but  again,  these  are  my  favorite  to use--just  love  that  rich  color!

Finishing  touch--putting  it  into  a  frame--

lots  of  doodling  this  time--I  call  this  one  "Gossip  Girls"  : )   (I  always  wonder  what  those  birds  are  chirping  about  in  my  neighborhood!)

And  remember  I  said  that  I  had  lots  of  sketchbooks  with  my  ideas  inside--they  always  come  in  handy  for  when  I'm  looking  for  inspiration--

This  one  took  a  little  longer---struggling  with  that  face--but  in  the  end --all  good...

So  this  is  what  I've  been  dong  since  I  last  blogged,  and  oh  yes,  the  most  important  thing---we  have  a  new  grandson!

Anthony Louis  (Tj for short)--8lbs. 3oz.--born  on  April  26,  and  I  was  there  for  the  whole  thing--amazing!!  He's  a  little  doll!
