Painting Furniture

It's  been  a  while,  but  I've  been  busy  with  furniture  painting.  I  try  to  find  forgotten  pieces  at  garage  sales  and  flea  markets  during  the  summer  to  update  and  give  a  new  life  to.   Like  this  one--how  it  started...

and  here's  how  it  is  now

and  another  one--this  time  a  cute  little  drop leaf  table--

one more is  a  bench  that I  found--loved  the  way  it  was  painted,  but  I  wanted  to  add  something  to  it--

Poppies--love  painting  these!

And  as  an  added  bonus, these  poppies  helped  me  make  some  more  art--

..love  when  this  happens--my  art  gave  me  new  art  :-)

Table Painting

I  don't  do  this  as  often  as  I  would  like  to--paint  furniture--in  this  case  2  very  different  tables  that  I  found  at  flea  markets.  The  first  one  was  one  of  my  favorites  to  find--

a  typewriter  table--definitely  a  memory  from  the  past.  I  love  finding  these  tables  and giving  them  a  new  life--

Next--

a  sewing  machine  table--I  gave  it  some  color--

And  then  I  took  my  new  art  and  repurposed  that  on  to  a  cigar  box--

This  is  definitely  my  favorite  way  of  making  art--taking  those  forgotten  items  from  the  past  life,  give  them  a  facelift  and  bringing  them  back  out  into  the  world  again.

Painting Furniture

To  me  furniture  is  just  another  substrate.   I'll  look  at  the  individual  piece  and  then  decide  what  I  want  to  do  with  it.  In  this  case,  I  had  a couple  of  benches  that  I  found  at  a  flea  market  during  the  summer.   So  I  just  started  painting  on  them....

And  I'm  happy  to  say  that  these  pieces  have  all  found  new  homes.   They went with  me  to  Columbiana,  Ohio  to  Christmas  in  the  Woods--the  show  I  look  forward  to  every year.   Lots  of  appreciative  shoppers  come  to  enjoy  this  show (great  art  and  crafts,  great  food,  and  great  entertainment).  They  let  us  artists  continue  what   we  love  to  do  most  by  their  support.

Painting Furniture

I  haven't  done  this  in  a  while,  but  when  I  saw  this  table  at  the  Springfield  flea  market  a  couple  of  weeks  ago,  ideas started  going  through  my  head--

I   forgot  how  fun  it  was  to  transform  a  plain  piece  of  furniture  into a one  of  a  kind  art  piece.

Luckily  I  picked  up  a  bench  too  at  the  flea  market--and,  as  you  can  see,  I  knew  exactly  what  I  could  do  with  it--

And  then  I  did  what  I  always  do--used  my  art  for  some  new  art--

All  of  this  is  going  with  me  next  weekend  for  my  show--Christmas  in  the  Woods  in  Columbiana,  Ohio--very  fun--love  this  show!

I Made a Journal Page--Kind Of....

I'm  in  my  hurry-up  mode, and trying  to  make  some  more  art  before  I  leave  tomorrow,  so  I  just  got  out  my  art  surface  and  thought  of  it  as  a  journal  page--having  absolutely  no  idea  what  I  was  going  to  do--which  is  scary  for  me.   Sometimes  it  takes  me  longer  to  think  of  what  I  want  to  do  than  to  do  the  actual  piece,  but  this  time  I  don't  have  time  to  do  that,  so  I  thought  to  myself--I'm  making  a  journal  page--

.......laid  down  blocks  of  color  and  stamping  over  that.......

Okay---getting  a  little  nervous--I  wasn't  too  crazy  about  this......

.....getting  a  little  better  now  with  this  pop  of  blue....

...and  now  I'm  starting  to  like  it  a  lot   and.....

.....and  now  I'm  getting  ideas....I  really  liked  the  cupboard  door  that  I  did  HERE--so  I  decided  to  do  this  style  again......

...finished!   So  when  you  scroll  up  and  see  how  this  started,  you  can  see  how  different  it  is--which  is  a  good  lesson  for  me--don't  be  afraid  to  put  anything  down--it   can  ALWAYS   be  covered  up  again.........and.......the  more  you  cover  up,  the  better--

....because,  you'll  still  have  the  underlying  layers  that  you  started  out  with.   This  is  probably  the  one  thing  that  I've  taken  away  from  all  of  my  workshops  that  I've  taken  and  art  books  that  I've  read--don't  be  afraid  to  just  paint!    And  what  made  this  even  scarier  for  me,  was  that  this  paint  surface  was  on  a  piece  of  furniture--

I  thought---what  the  heck--it's  just  another  surface----why  not  journal  on  it???

I  did  some  more  "journaling"  on  the  bottom  surface  of  the  table  too!

I  know  that  a  year  ago,  I  would  never  even  have  considered  doing  this  to  a  table---I'm  still  learning......and  who  knows  what  the  next  year  will  bring  to  me.

I'm  off  again  tomorrow--this is tough!!  And  now  the  weather  forecast is  looking  a  little  questionable--oh  no--not  again--we'll see......

I'm Off Again (& another giveaway to tell you about)

....for  my  2nd  weekend  at   Christmas  in  the  Woods.   This  is  hard!  I'm  working  on  pure  adrenaline  right  now,  but  even  that  is  running  low!  Some  of  these  exhibitors  at  this  time  of  the  year  do  this  week  after  week.  I  don't  know  how  they  do  it.  Aside  from  keeping  up  with  your  inventory,  you  only  have  4  days  to  regroup,  and  then  you're  off  again--it's  tough! 

So  most  of  my  furniture  is  gone  now--that's  a  good  thing,  but  I  needed  to  make  at  least  one  new  piece  to  take  with  me--so  I  did   a  table  that  I  found  this  summer  at  the  Highway  127  sale.

This  table  isn't  really  that  old.  Whoever  had  it  before  had  painted  it  this  aqua-green color  and  sanded  it  down  to  give  it  that  shabby  look,  which  I  really  like.  Half  of  the  work  was  done  for  me,  and  all  I  had  to  do  was  my  favorite  part--painting  the  design  on,  and  it  really  didn't  take  that  long. 

I   really  like  how  this  vase  of  flowers  turned  out,  so  I'm  planning  to  use  this  in  a  piece  of  artwork  before  I  go.

And  the  one  piece  that  didn't  sell  was  this  one--

which  I  didn't  think  would,  and  I'm  really  glad  it  didn't,  because  I  have  no  idea  how  I  would  have  filled  up  the big  empty  space  it  would  have  left.  It's  always  good  to  have  your  booth  pretty  full  especially  at  the  start  of  the  show.  Now  this  weekend,  if  it  sells,  I'll  be  glad.  I  did  have  a  lot  of  lookers,  but  no  takers--so  we'll  see.....

But  now,  I  have  something  that  I  can  set  on  top  of  it--

This  was  one  of  the   pieces  that  I  was  demonstrating  with  last  week  there.  They're pretty  strict  about  this  aspect.  For  the  most  part  of  the  show,  you  have  to  be  demonstrating  your  art--they  even  go  around  to  check  that  you  are.   And  that's  regardless of  the  weather.  Last  weekend  was  fine,  and  so  far  this  weekend  doesn't  look  too bad  either  but  definitely  cooler,  and  in   the  morning--cold!!   But  this  year,  I'll  be  a  little  more  prepared.  I  purchased  these-

from Theresa's  (Faerie  Moon Creations)   Etsy shop--these  very soft  and  warm  fingerless gloves.  I  needed  them  in  black so  I  contacted  her  and  within   2  days,  they  were  finished!  And  I  LOVE  them!   If  you  have  a  chance,  check  out  her  store--along  with  being  a  very  talented  jewelry artist,  she  also  has  mixed  media  pieces ( a  fellow  Suzi  Blu  classmate  of  mine)

So  after  you  visit  Theresa's  store,  you  can  go  over  to  Cathy's  blog  Artsy  Butterfly  for  her  very  first  giveaway.   On  of  her  many  artistic  talents  is  photography  and  she's  giving  away  two  5 x 7  photos  matted  on  an  8 x 10  glossy  photo  paper  of  these  very  cool  photos  that  were  taken  at  night.  You'll  just  have  to  go  over  to  her  blog  to  see  what  I  mean.

So  I'll  be  leaving  tomorrow  morning  again,  and  I'm  hoping  for  another  great  weekend--keep  your  fingers  crossed!   And  hey,  if  any  of  you  bloggers  out  there  want  to  visit  me  again,  you'll  know  where  to  find  me!

I Wish You All Could Come.....

So  before  I  extend  my  invitation,  I  want  to  show  you  my  finished  work  in  progress from  my  last  post.    I  didn't  think  I  could  get  a  good  shot  taking  it  indoors,  but  I  did (except  a  little  blurry)--

I  found  this  piece  of  furniture  at  the  wholesale  show  in  Columbus  from  the  furniture  maker  that's  there (he's  from  Tennessee  actually)  His  furniture  is  made  of  pine,  and   the  table  surfaces  are  unfinished.  I  usually  paint  them,  but  in  the  interest  of  time (not  having  any),  I  decided  to  just  paint  the  design  on  and   then  seal  it  all.  I  am  so  glad  that  I  did--I  love  this  result!   This  is  fairly  large--it's  almost  4  feet  across  and  3  feet  tall.  I'm  hoping  that  it  will   find  a  home,  but  it's  usually  takes  a  while  for  these  larger  pieces  to  go.  That's  okay--it  can  stick  around  for  a  while.

So  back  to  what  I  was  saying  when  I  started  out--I  sure  do  wish  that  you  could  all  come  with  me  this  weekend  to  an  Old  Fashioned  Christmas  in  the  Woods.  This  is  my  favorite  show  of  the  year  by  far.  It's  the  sister  show  to  another  popular  show,  Shaker  Woods  that's  held  for  3  weekends  in  August.  The  people  who  run  the  summer  show  own  this  very  very  large  piece  of  land,  so  all  of  the  wooden  booths  that  were  built  by  the  exhibitors  stay  up  permanently.  So  sometime  in  the  90's  they  decided  to  start  Christmas  in  the  Woods,  and  now  it's  just  as  popular  as  the  summer  one.  All  of  us  Christmas  exhibitors  just  rent  the  booths  that  are  already  there,  and  in  keeping   with  the  tradition  of   the  original  show,  we  are  all  required  to  dress  in  colonial  attire.  This  actually  was  one  reason  why  I   never  considered  this  show--I  didn't  want  to  dress up,  but now  it's  my  favorite  part.  In  the morning  when  we're  all  waiting  for  the  show  to open, there's  no  sign  of  the  21st  century.  And  we're  all  socializing  with each  other--it's  SO  fun!!--and  I  know  the customers  love this  aspect  also.

So  tomorrow  very  early in the morning  I'm  leaving  to  go  clean  my  little  "house"  and  decorate  it  for  Christmas  (this  is  required  also).  These  shots  were  taken  last  year,  but   it's  still  the  same.  These  are  the  grounds  before  the  show  gets  going.

Notice  that  carved  tree  stump--well  they're  all over  the  grounds  done  by  a  local  artist,  and  they're  all  different.

This  is  just  a  tiny  fraction  of  all   the  booths--they're  all  different,  and  they're  spaciously  spread  out.  This  place  is  like  a  maze--the  first  couple  of  times  when  I  left  my  booth  when  I  first  started  doing  this  show,  I  seriously  got  lost and  almost  had  to  go  to  the  information  booth  to  find  mine  : )  They  even  have  a  chapel  there  and  Sunday  services  are  held  for  the  exhibitors  before  the  show  starts--

And  this  is  my  humble  little  home--

And  look  at this--I'm  actually  doing  some  house-cleaning!! 

At  this  point,  this  booth,  that's open  to  the  elements  all  year  long  is  cleaner  than  my  house  is  right  now!

And  I  did  want  to  show  you  this  one  booth--

I  took  this  photo,  because  this  is  the  first  time  I've seen  it  with  a  clear  path.  This  is  most  likely  the  busiest  booth  in  the  show.  The  lady  sells  her  handmade  primitive  Santas.  This  is  the  only  show  that  she  does--so  all  year  she  prepares  for  this  show,  and  it  pays  off.  Here's  a  shot  taken  during  the  show--

Not  one--but  two  lines  that  are  pretty  much  like  this  all  of  Saturday  and  most  of  Sunday!  She  does  have  family  and  friends  that  help  her  at  her  booth,  obviously.  Her  Santas  are  quality,  and  the  proof  is  from her  return  customers  year  after  to  year  who  collect  her  Santas.  Her  prices  range  from  $40  to  $200--okay so  these  lines  are  pretty  constant  for  both  weekends--I'll  let  you  do  the math!

And  the weather is  looking excellent--sunny  and  in  the  upper  70's.  We've  been  having so much  rain here  in the last week--we  have  a  very  large  puddle  in  our  backyard, and  we  found  a  very  small puddle  in  our  kitchen--a  leaky  roof  which  will need to be  replaced  at  least  in  this  area  of  the  house--not  cheap,  but  I'm  digressing--the  weather  is  looking  excellent.  Some  of  the  years  have  been  brutally  cold,  but  we're  allowed  to  use  kerosene  heaters,  which  helps  tremendously.

And  I'm  about  as  ready  to  leave  as  I  can  be--there's  a lot  more  to  the  set  up  than  normal.  Plus,  remember  the  buttons  I  found  in  my  last  post?  I've  already  started  to  put  them  to  use--

 And....one more  thing (I know  this  post  is  long,  but  I  need  a  little  distraction),  I  haven't  been  out  much  in  the  last  2  weeks,  but  I  can  still  get  a  little  taste  of  the  outdoors.  This  is  a bird feeder  that  we  have  on  our  front  porch.  You  fill  it  with  suet,  and  it  only  has  a  small opening  in  it--

 At  one  point,  I  counted  12  birds  on  the  railing  all  patiently  waiting  they're  turn.  Aren't  birds  cute?!
