Painting Furniture

To  me  furniture  is  just  another  substrate.   I'll  look  at  the  individual  piece  and  then  decide  what  I  want  to  do  with  it.  In  this  case,  I  had  a couple  of  benches  that  I  found  at  a  flea  market  during  the  summer.   So  I  just  started  painting  on  them....

And  I'm  happy  to  say  that  these  pieces  have  all  found  new  homes.   They went with  me  to  Columbiana,  Ohio  to  Christmas  in  the  Woods--the  show  I  look  forward  to  every year.   Lots  of  appreciative  shoppers  come  to  enjoy  this  show (great  art  and  crafts,  great  food,  and  great  entertainment).  They  let  us  artists  continue  what   we  love  to  do  most  by  their  support.

Painting Furniture

I  haven't  done  this  in  a  while,  but  when  I  saw  this  table  at  the  Springfield  flea  market  a  couple  of  weeks  ago,  ideas started  going  through  my  head--

I   forgot  how  fun  it  was  to  transform  a  plain  piece  of  furniture  into a one  of  a  kind  art  piece.

Luckily  I  picked  up  a  bench  too  at  the  flea  market--and,  as  you  can  see,  I  knew  exactly  what  I  could  do  with  it--

And  then  I  did  what  I  always  do--used  my  art  for  some  new  art--

All  of  this  is  going  with  me  next  weekend  for  my  show--Christmas  in  the  Woods  in  Columbiana,  Ohio--very  fun--love  this  show!

Getting Crafty With My Flea Market Finds

So  I  have  to  mention  that  I  just  returned  from  one  of  the  best  flea  markets  that  I've  ever  been  too--the  Springfield, Ohio  Flea  Market  and  Antique Show  Extravaganza.   I  went  there  in  May,  and  they  always  have  another  one  in  Sep.--over  2000 vendors!  I've  been  to  a  LOT  of  flea  markets--but  this  one,  so  far  is  at  the  top  of  my  list--you  can  read  more  about  it  HERE--my  blog  post  from  last  May  where  I  talk  about  it  in  more  detail.   But  for  now,  I'll   show  you  what  I  did  with  just  a  little  bit  of  my  finds  from  that  show. 

 

First  of  all--here's   just  the  tip  of  'treasures'  that  I  found--

 

 

 

2  of  my  favorite  things  in  this  photo--letters  and  old  hardware--can  never  pass  them  up...

...these  sewing  spools  already  covered  in  the  fabric--which  gave  me  a  spark--

 

 

...perfect  for  my  Christmas  show  in  less  than  2  weeks  now...

I've  never  really  seen  anything  like  this  before--a  children's  shoe  shine/bank  combo  metal  box  (not  quite  sure  where  the  bank  part  comes  in  though)--but  it  was  perfect  for  what  I  wanted  it  for--

...an  old  pop  crate  filled  with  more  flea  market  finds.  

 

So  I  guess  the  moral  is--everything  can  be  repurposed.   We  don't  want  to  throw  these  items  from  the  past  away--your  trash  will  always  be  someone  else's  treasures  : )

 

I  do  enjoy  bringing  out  my  crafty  side,  but  my  first  love  is  painting  and  just  being  in  my  studio.    So  I  had  to  get  out  my  paints  and  Stuff--

 

 

Actually,  this  is  a  special  order  from  a  lady  that's  coming  to  my  show--very  fun!

I  can  never  make  enough  of  these  boxes--especially  this  time  of  year!  

 

So  that's  what  I've  been  doing  these  last  couple  of  weeks--getting  ready  for  my  big  show  and  waiting  for  the  arrival  of  my  grandson  who,  by  the  way,  is  due  on  the same  weekend  of  my  show--wonder  how  that's  going  to  work  out??

Taking a Breath......

Wow!!   As  fast  as  my  big  show  came  up  on  me--it's  all  over  now.    What  an  awesome  show  this  was.   Two  weekends  ago  I  was  all  set  up  to  go.....

 

 

 

The  weather  was  beautiful,  and  the  crowds  came  in  full  force....

 

 

 

It  was  overwhelming  on  how  many  people  were  at  this  show!!   And  these  people  are  here  to  buy  and they  really  appreciate  handcrafted  items  and  art  as  well.    The  long  hours  of  getting  ready  for  this  event  were  well  worth  it.

 

I  was  pretty  depleted  by  the  time  the  first  weekend  was  over,  so  the  next  week  I  rushed  to  make  some  quick  art  by  recycling  my  old  pieces...

 

 

 

Even  though  these  are  prints  of  mine,  I  was  able  to  give  them  a  fresh  new  look.   So  I  was  able  to  fill   the  walls  of  my  booth  again  along  with  my  Christmas  florals.

 

I  did  make  a  point  of  making  one  new  piece  for  the  next  weekend  though....

 

 

 

This  was  a  fairly  large  piece,  and  I  finished  it  up  on  the  Thursday  before  I  had  to  leave  again.   Usually  these  pieces  take  a  while  to  sell,  but  not  at  this  show--less  than  48  hours  from  when  I  had  finished it--it  sold!   Yeah--that's  how  good  this  show  is.

 

And  remember  all  of  my whimsy  houses  from  my  last  3  posts?--all  sold  but  one!   I'm  telling  you--this  show  is  awesome!    So  the  piece  that  didn't  find  a  home  is  now  in  my  Etsy  shop--

 

 

I  feel  bad  that  this  little  birdie  didn't  find  a  home---so  if  anyone  wants  to  give  him  one,  you  can  find  him  HERE.

 

And  did  I  mention  how  delicious  the  food  was  there??   I  had  a  steady  diet  of  the  deep  fried  pickles  there--absolutely  delicious!!

 

I  was  sad  to  say  goodbye  to  this  place  :- (

 

 

......until  next  year...

 

So  now  I'm  taking  a  little  breather,  but  just  a  little  one,  because  I  have  one  more  show  at  the  end  of  November,  and  I'm  starting  to  work  on  some  new  art...

 

 

....but  now  I'm  able  to  enjoy  the  process  a  bit.....

My Whimsy Houses III (with help from Graphic 45)

And  I  have  to  give  credit  to  Graphic  45's  latest  papers--"A  Ladies  Diary"--

 

 

 

They've  outdone  themselves--these  papers  are  gorgeous!  And  I  used  this  vintage  book for  the text  faces  of  my  angels--I  thought  it  was  fitting  for  the  papers. 

 

So....I  didn't  stop  with  the  houses--I  kept  going--with  a  mirror--

...wonderful  vintage  feel  to  these  papers--and  they're  all  going  with  me  tomorrow.   I've  been  whipping  these  things  out  so  fast----I  guess  I  work  well  under  pressure.   This  is  my  biggest  show  of  the  year,  and   I  love  it!!  The  weather's  looking  okay,  but  at  this  show,  it  really  doesn't  matter--it's  a  good  one!!

 

My Whimsy Houses II

I  had  so  much  fun  making  my  houses  last  week----no  wait----that  was  2  weeks  ago--where  does  the  time  go??  I've  been  so  busy,  that  I've  had  to  put  blogging  on  the  back  burner.   

 

.....back  to  what  I  was  saying---I  had  fun  with  my  first  set  of  houses--and  they've  already  sold--they  were  a  big  hit  at  my  show.....so  I  had  to  make  some  more  for  my  next  big  show,  and  Most  favorite  of  the  whole  year--Christmas  in  the  Woods.   Every  year  I  talk  about  this  show--it's  in  the  woods--all  decked  out  for  Christmas.    We're  in  our  wooden  booths  in  our  colonial  attire--it's  just  a  wonderful  time  all  around--great  food,  fun  music,  and  lots  and  lots  of  shoppers  looking  for  those  Christmas  gifts--yes  Christmas  already.

 

So  I'm  setting  the  mood  for  Winter  with  my  houses--

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Love  them  all!!

 

I  don't  like  rushing  the  seasons  like  this,  but  it's  kind  of  expected  with  this  show--and  when  you're  there,  it  can  be  80  degrees  out  (which  in  some  years,  it  has  been)--but  it  still  feels   like  the  Winter  season  and  Christmas  is  right  around  the  corner.    It's  just  a  fun  2  weekend  getaway.

 

And  then,  when  the  show  is  over  in  3  weeks  from  now,  I'll  come  home  to  real  time,  and  enjoy  another  favorite  time  of  mine---Halloween!!

 

 

Sad To See It Over With

What  a  great  2  weekends  I've  had  at  my  festival  Christmas  in  the  Woods.   Everything  is  closed  up  until  next  August  for  the next  big  festival  that  happens  there  called  Shaker  Woods.

 

So  this  is  what  I  would  see  when  I  looked  out  of  the  front  door  of  my  booth.   This  land  is  owned  by  the  people  who  run  the  August  show,  so  these  booths  are  permanent.   The  artists  in  the  August  festival  own  them,  and  then  us  artists  in  October  rent  them  for  Christmas  in  the  Woods.

On  the  other  side,  that  you  can't  see,  is  an  L-shaped  counter,  which  is  perfect,  since  they  want  us  to  demonstrate  our  art.   And  as  you  can  see,  it's  a  pretty big  space  to  fill,  which  is  why  I  made  a  lot  of  Christmas  florals  and  decor to help  fill  it  up.    I  thought  that  the  most  I  would  get  would  be  compliments  on  my  artwork,  but  like  I  said  in  my  last  post,  I  was  wrong.   My  art  was  selling  just  as  well  as  the  Christmas  items  on  both  weekends!

This  last  weekend's  weather  was  not  good  either.   On  Saturday  it  was  cold  and  very  windy,  and  on  Sunday  it  rained  off  and  on  all  day--kind  of  miserable.   But  if  you  live  in  the  Northeastern  part  of  the  U.S.,  you  know  how  the  weather  can  be.   I've  seen  it  70  degrees  and  sunny  in  the  morning,  rain  in  the  afternoon,  ending  up  with  a  couple  of  inches  of  snow  by  nightfall--really!!    So  whatever  Mother  Nature  is  ready  to  dish  out  to  us,  we  can  handle  it.    And  especially  on  Sunday--these  ladies  shopping  didn't  care  at  all  about  getting  wet  or  being  cold--they  were  Shopping!!   It  ended  up  being  as  good  a  weekend  as  the  one  before.

Sad  to  see  it  over  with,  but  glad  for  the  break.   I  have  one  more  show,  and  that's  at  the  beginning  of  December,  so  I  can  relax  for  just  a  little  bit--just  a  little  : )

So  for  the  last  couple  of  weeks,  I  really  haven't  left  the  house,  and  I've  missed  my  other  favorite  thing  to  do--shopping.....so..........I  went  to  Etsy  and  did  a  little  shopping  there.   This  was  what  was  waiting  for  me  when  I  came  home  on  Sunday  night.

These  are  only  2  purchases  of  many  that  I've  made  through  Etsy--most  of  it  artwork  for  my  artoom,  from  blogging  buddies.  I've  yet  to  even  hang  them  yet,  but  I  can't  wait  until  I  do.  I  WILL  most  definitely  take  a  pic  and  show  you  all.

Back Home and Getting Ready To Do It Again.....

My  last  weekend--very  s-l-o-w  sales........it  was  a  bit  disappointing,  but  I  had  such  a  fun  time  all  of  these  weeks  (except  for  the  first  rainy  Saturday)  that  I'm  going  back  next  year!   I  did  some  great  shopping  too---very  one  of  a  kind  finds.  

When   I  do  make  a  sale,  of   course  it  makes  me  happy,   and  I  can  see  that  the  people  purchasing  it  are   too.   But  there  are  some  sales  that  I  like  even  better  when  the  recipients  are  very  excited  and  tell  me  why  they've  decided  on  a  particular  piece.

Last  week,  a  lady  came  in  with  her  Mom  and  daughter,  and  she  picked  out  a  few  items  (it  was  a  good  sale : )    And  then  her  daughter  walked  right  up  to  this--

You  see,  her  daughter  had  just  started  Kindergarten  this  year,  and  she  was  with  her  Mom  shopping  for  her  teacher  for  Christmas.   I  explained  to  her  that  it  would  be  a  great  box  for  her  teacher  to  hold  her  school  supplies  in,  and  she  loved  that  idea,  plus  this  box  (I  think)  would  be  a  great  teacher's  gift.   It's  pretty  fun  knowing  that  this  box  will  be  in  a  classroom  with  young  children  just  starting  out  in  school--a  good  home  for  it!

And  remember  my  sewing  stand  turned  into  a  table?   I'm  so  glad  that  I  sold  it  because  as  much  as  I  loved  it,  it  was  a  pain  in  the  you  know  what  to  haul  around--very  heavy  and  it  took  up  so  much  room  in  our  vehicle.   And  the  lady  who  purchased  it  was  so  excited.   She  told  me  that  she  had  a  room  in  her house  completely  devoted  to  local  artists,  and  this  is  where  this  table  was  going.

I  was  so  happy  to  hear  that.

And  also  this   piece  made  especially  for  the  festival--

The  first weekend  I  had  a  couple  of  inquiries  about  it,  and  I  told  those  interested  that  it  was  for  sale,  but  I  wanted  to  display  it  until  the  end  of  the  festival.   But  on  the  2nd   weekend,  a  lady  came  into  my  booth  and  just  fell  in  love  with  it.    And  I  knew  then  that's  who  I  was  making  this  piece  for.   I  always  say  that  I'm  making  my  art  for  someone  in  particular--they  just  have  to  find  it.   She  found  it,  and  I  couldn't  say  no.   I  let  her  take  it  home  with  her.

And  I  have  one  more  that  I  remember  well.   This  one  on  a  cupboard  door--

There  were  3  friends  shopping,  and  they  told  me  that  they  Christmas  shop  for  each  other  when  they're  together.   They  pick  out  what  they  like,  then  one  of  the  friends  will  get  whatever  it  is,  and  then  give  it  to  their  friend  at  Christmas  time.   They  say  that  they  usually  can't  remember  too  well  what  they  picked  out,  and  they  know  that  they  will  be  receiving  something  that  they  really like  : )
So  the  one  lady  picked  out  this  piece,  and  her  friend  purchased  it!   Love  that  idea!

This  is  why  I  prefer  selling  my  art  in  person.   I  love  to  know  where  my  "kids"  are  going  to  be.   I  get  very  attached  to  these  pieces,  as  I'm  sure  that  you  all  do  with  your own  art.   Sometimes  my  art  and  I  have  disagreements (just  like kids), but  in  the  end,  you  love  all  of  your  pieces   and  you  really   care  what  happens  to  them.

And  now  to  get  ready  for  another  big  show,  and  my  favorite  which  I  talked  about  HERE.....have  to  start  thinking  about  Christmas....the  show  is Old  Fashioned Christmas  in  the  Woods.   I  really  do  love  it--it's  very  festive,  and  like  the  name  says--old  fashioned--the  best  kind  of  Christmas!
