New Painted Papers=New Art

I  have  to  say  that  this  has  to  be  one  of  my  favorite  ways  to  create  art--'painting'  with  my  papers that  I  painted.   The  first  thing  I  did  this  time  was  get  out  my  Gelli  Plate--

I'm  still  a  beginner  when  it  comes  to  the  gelli  plate,  but  you  still  get  great  results.  The  scraps  that  you  see  laying  there  are  what  I  used  as  masks  on  the  plate,  and  they're  ready  to  use  as  collage  also.

Next,  I  went  for  texture--

I  got  out  my  heavy  gel  medium,  stencil,  and  texture  comb (hair  pick)  for  the  front  2  papers,  and  the  back  one  is  textured  wallpaper.

And  then  more  painting  with  all  of  my  paint  that  I  had  out--

added  with  my  printed  papers--there  ended  up  being  a  good  amount  to  play  with.   I  just  want  to  mention  that  all  of  these  papers (including  the  textured ones  in  the  photo  above)  are  a  110lb  cardstock  paper--stands  up  to  anything!  I  paint  on  these  like  I  would  on  a  canvas  or  any  surface,  for  that  matter.   I  get  it  at  Staples  (office  supply  store),  in  a  big  pack  that  lasts  a  Long  time.

I  started  with  a  6  x  18  wood  deep--edge  cradle  board--

I  really  like  this  size.....so.....I  made  another  one..

....this  time  I  used  my  textured  paper  for  the  roof..

...and  added  some  fun  embellishments..

a  knob  and  an  old  door  faceplate  that  I  painted  to  match  with  the  colors  of  the  house.

haven't  made  an  angel  in  a  while--this  was  fun--I  added  some  ephemera  to  the  dress--really  liked  how  she  turned  out!

Playing With Metal

I  haven't  done  this  in  a while--embossing  on  metal,  and  I  forgot  how  fun  and  kind  of  therapeutic  it  is.  So  just  a  quick  little  blog  post  to  show  you  my  latest  pieces--

first  I  made  my  little  'tiles'  on  these ecoart boards--these  are  perfect  for adhering  the  metal  on  to.    And  they  all  came  together  on  this  gallery  canvas--

Next,  I  made  a  whimsy-type  house--

but  this  time  I  adhered  the  metal  on  to very  thick  fun  foam  that  I  cut  into  the  roof  and  house  shape--this  was  a  fun  piece

And  then.....I  got  out  my  paints--

I  just  use  regular  artists'  acrylic  paints--multiple  coats,  and  a  workable  fixative  with  gloss  varnish  for  a  finish---not  supposed  to  use  regular  paints  on  metal,  but  I  do!

And  I'm  still  playing  with  metal,  but  slowly--lots  of  real-life  stuff  going  on  right  now,  not  to  mention  that  my  first  show  of  the  season  starts  this  weekend  (finally!)--looking  forward  to  it.

Taking Advantage of Your Own Art

I  don't  have  a  start  to finish  this  time  for  my  latest  piece,  but  I  wanted  to  show  you  ways  of  getting  the  most  out  of  your  art.   This  is  nothing  new  for  me,  and  if  you're  a  visitor  to  my  blog,  you've  seen  me  do  this  before---but  I  love  to  share,  and  spark  some  ideas  for  others  out  there.

So  I  started  with  a  big  blank  18 x 24  gallery  canvas--which  I  don't  like--that's  big  for  me,  but  this  time  I  took  it  one  section  at  a  time--almost  like  small  little  canvases--

And  all  together--

So  from  here--I  saw  the  opportunity  to  crop  different parts  of  it   and  make  some  more  art--

on  these  6 x 6 canvases.   When  I  print  out  my  art, and  then  adhere  them  to  the  surface  of  my  choice,  I'll  use  gel  medium  (coating  the  top  as  well),  which  creates  a  barrier.   This  helps  me  when  I  enhance  them with  more  color,  because  they  will  fade  and  bleed  slightly.  I  always  bring  the  color  back  out  with  pitt  pens (the  brush  tip).   For  those  of  you  who  aren't  familiar  with  them--they're  india  ink,  and  when  you  first  apply  them  you  have  about  a  minute  to  blend  them  with  your  finger  or  damp  paintbrush--they  are  wonderful  to  use,  and  they  mix  very  well  with  each  other, not  to  mention  every  color  of  the  rainbow  at  dick blick  for  the  best  price.  The  best  thing  about  them,  is  that  once  they're  dry,  they're  permanent--they're  not  water  soluble.

and  next,  I  do  what  I  usually  do--

 I  looked  for  a  box,  in  this  case  a  very  large  cigar  box--another  cropped  image  from  my  original  art  piece , and  then  I  searched  through  all  of  my  original  art  images  that  I  have  stored  in  my  computer (love  today's  technology!)  for  houses.  My  plan  was  to  have  a  neighborhood  of  houses  wrapped  around  the  entire  box--which  I  was  able  to  do....

I can  keep  doing  this  with  my  art--mixing  and  matching,  and  it  will  always  be  new,  because  it's  my  art,  and  you  can  do  the  same  with  yours--all you  need  is  a  printer,  and  your  imagination to  make  it  uniquely yours!

Some More Collaged Art With My Painted Papers

I've  been  very  busy  playing  with  my  painted  papers--they're  just  another  art  supply,  like  paint--I  really  like  the  idea  of  taking  colorful  papers  that I  painted  myself  and  using  them  to  create a  new  piece.   Love  all  of  the  colors,  and  mixing  them  up.  It's  surprising  how  some  papers  next  to  each  other  don't  seem  'to  go',  but  when  you  combine  them  in  your  artwork,  they  look  great.

...I  used  my  little  owl  that  I  painted  last  year  on  this  one--he's  one  of  my  favorites  : )

And  this  is  a  canvas  with  all  of  my  scraps  of  paper--the start of the piece--the background.

...but  I  kept  some  of  that  background  and  turned  it  into  a  foreground--adding  some  doodling,  stamping,  and  more  paint.

Next,  I  decided  to  go  dimensional--starting  out  with  these  wooden  houses  and  tree--

 ...adding  these  fun  little  embellishments.    And  then  I  took  apart  a  wood  cigar  box  that  I  had....

...did  some  more  collaging--and  that  paper  in  the  middle  is  from  the  latest  Somerset  Studio  magazine  art  to  borrow  page.   They  always  include  4  papers  with  every  issue,  and  this  one  was  perfect  for  my  little  neighborhood!

And  then  back  to  playing  with  more  scraps---on  a  mirror  frame--

And  I'm  still  going--NOW  I  have  lots  of  little  bits  and  pieces  to  'paint'  with--I'm  not  finished  yet!

Taking a Breath......

Wow!!   As  fast  as  my  big  show  came  up  on  me--it's  all  over  now.    What  an  awesome  show  this  was.   Two  weekends  ago  I  was  all  set  up  to  go.....

 

 

 

The  weather  was  beautiful,  and  the  crowds  came  in  full  force....

 

 

 

It  was  overwhelming  on  how  many  people  were  at  this  show!!   And  these  people  are  here  to  buy  and they  really  appreciate  handcrafted  items  and  art  as  well.    The  long  hours  of  getting  ready  for  this  event  were  well  worth  it.

 

I  was  pretty  depleted  by  the  time  the  first  weekend  was  over,  so  the  next  week  I  rushed  to  make  some  quick  art  by  recycling  my  old  pieces...

 

 

 

Even  though  these  are  prints  of  mine,  I  was  able  to  give  them  a  fresh  new  look.   So  I  was  able  to  fill   the  walls  of  my  booth  again  along  with  my  Christmas  florals.

 

I  did  make  a  point  of  making  one  new  piece  for  the  next  weekend  though....

 

 

 

This  was  a  fairly  large  piece,  and  I  finished  it  up  on  the  Thursday  before  I  had  to  leave  again.   Usually  these  pieces  take  a  while  to  sell,  but  not  at  this  show--less  than  48  hours  from  when  I  had  finished it--it  sold!   Yeah--that's  how  good  this  show  is.

 

And  remember  all  of  my whimsy  houses  from  my  last  3  posts?--all  sold  but  one!   I'm  telling  you--this  show  is  awesome!    So  the  piece  that  didn't  find  a  home  is  now  in  my  Etsy  shop--

 

 

I  feel  bad  that  this  little  birdie  didn't  find  a  home---so  if  anyone  wants  to  give  him  one,  you  can  find  him  HERE.

 

And  did  I  mention  how  delicious  the  food  was  there??   I  had  a  steady  diet  of  the  deep  fried  pickles  there--absolutely  delicious!!

 

I  was  sad  to  say  goodbye  to  this  place  :- (

So  now  I'm  taking  a  little  breather,  but  just  a  little  one,  because  I  have  one  more  show  at  the  end  of  November,  and  I'm  starting  to  work  on  some  new  art...

 

 

....but  now  I'm  able  to  enjoy  the  process  a  bit.....
