Art For You

I've  been  busy  busy  busy  these last  couple  of  a months--making  lots  of  art  for  shows.   So  no  more  talking--I'll  just  show  you  what  I've  been  up  to--

Lots  of  painting--

Painting  on  one  of  my  favorite  surfaces--

--an  old  cupboard  door  given  a  new  life

my second  love,  when  I  step  away  from  the  paint--

making  assemblages  with  the  wonderful  items  from  the  past  that  have  been  forgotten--you  can't  throw  these  little  trinkets  out!!

And  also  finding  vintage  toys  at  the  flea  markets--

and  giving  them  a  little  Christmas  spirit

And  I  also  was  able  to  take  a  2  week  vacation  visiting  my  son  in  Florida--got  away  from  the  cold,  rainy, not  so  great  Fall  that  we've  been  having  to  beautiful  weather--

...for  you  lighthouse  lovers--this  is  the  Ponce Inlet Lighthouse  near  Daytona  Beach,  and  of  course  when  you're  in  Florida,  you  have  to  go  to  Disney!  (well  at  least  I  do)

Cinderella's  castle  at  night--beautiful!

So  now  I'm  back  Home  getting  ready  for  one  more  show

Transformation--Sunflower Painting

I  always  love  transforming  the old  pieces  that  I  pick  up  at  flea  markets  and  garage  sales--like  this  one....

actually  one  of  2  old  cupboard  doors  that  I  found  at  a  flea  market  this  summer--$5.00  for  both--that's  $2.50  each!  You  can't  feel  guilty  about  messing  up  on these  at  that  price,  and  they are  a pretty  good  size  too--18 x 30

So--first  step--

putting  on  my  first  layer

next  step--the  sunflowers

used  a  palette  knife  for  the  first  time--once  I  got  the  hang  of  it,  it  was  fun  to  do

the  finished  door--

so  happy  with  this--don't  pass  up  those  old  doors or  whatever  you  may  see  at  flea  markets  that  could  very  well  end  up  in  the  trash--it's  always  fun seeing  what  you  can  do  with  pieces  like  these.   so now.....on  to  the  next  one!

Repurposing

That's  what  I've  been  doing  lately--repurposing--I like  that  word.   And  in  this  case,  it's  been  old  cupboard  doors  that  I've  found  in  flea  markets  and  garage  sales--

.....first  thing  I  did  was  paint  the  tulips  and   next  I  'framed'  it--

...with  scraps  of  my  painted  papers--one  of  the reasons  why  I  like  working  on  these  doors  so  much--they  have  their  own  frames

New Art--Start to Finish

I  had  a  great  show  these  last  2  weekends--very  busy--not  much  time  to  make  any  new  art.  Needless to  say,  I  missed  my  art  room,  playing  with  paint--just  playing.  So  it  felt  good  to  do  just  that.   Here's  the  outcome  of  my  latest  playtime--

....now let  me  back  up  and show  you  the  transformation  of  this  once  old,  shabby,  dirty,  forgotten  cupboard  door....

first  step--add  some  book  pages  in  the  center  of  the  door--

... then  adding  some  Golden  fluid  acrylics Yellow  Ochre  and  Indian  Yellow  Hue (one  of  my  favorite  color  combinations)  to  the  sides  and  inside  lip  of  the  center--next--

....taking  those  same  colors  plus  some  Titan Buff  and  painting  over  the  text,  but  making  sure  not  to  completly  cover  it--I  like  the  texture  that  the  text  gives

Now  it  was  time  to  get  out  papers  that  I've  been  painting  (a  lot  of  them  were  from  my  workshop  that  I  taught  back  in  September)--

  

and  I  made some  new  textured  ones  too--

I  used  these  papers for  the  'frame'  of  the  piece--

I  don't  always  start  with  the  frame  of  the  door  when  I  do  these.  Sometimes  I  make  my  main  image  first,  which  helps  me  determine  how  I  want  to  do  the  frame.   But  this  time,  it  was  the  other  way  around--the  frame  told  me  what  colors  to  use  for  the  focal  point  of  the  piece.    Next,  was  the  main  image  with  some  more  paper  play--

And  then  back  to  my  favorite  paints--Golden  Fluid  acrylics  and  a touch  of  Prisma  NuPastels  
(a  hard  chalk  pastel--love  working  with  these)

so  happy  with  the  texture  and  layers  of  this  piece--

I  really  enjoy  working  on  these  cupboard  doors  that  I  find  at   flea  markets  and  garage  sales--found a  bunch  at  the  Springfield  flea  market  too!

New Painted Papers=New Art

I  have  to  say  that  this  has  to  be  one  of  my  favorite  ways  to  create  art--'painting'  with  my  papers that  I  painted.   The  first  thing  I  did  this  time  was  get  out  my  Gelli  Plate--

I'm  still  a  beginner  when  it  comes  to  the  gelli  plate,  but  you  still  get  great  results.  The  scraps  that  you  see  laying  there  are  what  I  used  as  masks  on  the  plate,  and  they're  ready  to  use  as  collage  also.

Next,  I  went  for  texture--

I  got  out  my  heavy  gel  medium,  stencil,  and  texture  comb (hair  pick)  for  the  front  2  papers,  and  the  back  one  is  textured  wallpaper.

And  then  more  painting  with  all  of  my  paint  that  I  had  out--

added  with  my  printed  papers--there  ended  up  being  a  good  amount  to  play  with.   I  just  want  to  mention  that  all  of  these  papers (including  the  textured ones  in  the  photo  above)  are  a  110lb  cardstock  paper--stands  up  to  anything!  I  paint  on  these  like  I  would  on  a  canvas  or  any  surface,  for  that  matter.   I  get  it  at  Staples  (office  supply  store),  in  a  big  pack  that  lasts  a  Long  time.

I  started  with  a  6  x  18  wood  deep--edge  cradle  board--

I  really  like  this  size.....so.....I  made  another  one..

....this  time  I  used  my  textured  paper  for  the  roof..

...and  added  some  fun  embellishments..

a  knob  and  an  old  door  faceplate  that  I  painted  to  match  with  the  colors  of  the  house.

And  1  more  6 x 18--

haven't  made  an  angel  in  a  while--this  was  fun--I  added  some  ephemera  to  the  dress--really  liked  how  she  turned  out!

More  paper  fun--

using  up  those  scraps  this  time  on   8 x 8  cradle  boards..

I'll  always  find  a  use  for  all  of  the  'stuff'  that  I've  collected  over  the  years  : )

Coffee Time

There's  always  time  for  coffee--even  when  it  comes  to  art.  I  love  making  'coffee  art',  and  here's  how  I  started  out--

my  papers  determined  my  color  palette  on  a  12 x12  gallery  canvas

some  'coffee  talk'

sunflowers  and  another  cup  of  coffee

with  some  roosters

and  if  you're  a  coffee  drinker,  you  know  that  anytime  is  coffee  time.....

........and  you  can  never  have  enough  coffee!

So  after  the  coffee  art,  I  stuck  with  the  same  palette  and  painted  a  new  tree--

on  a  cupboard  door--I'll  never  get  tired  of  playing  with  paint  and  paper  together--there's  so  much  you  can  do  with  them!
