More Paper Play

I've  been  very  busy  lately,  and  have  been  neglecting  my  blog  here--just  too much  stuff going  on.   It's  finally  summer  here  (forget  about  Spring--we  didn't  have  one),  so  I've  been  enjoying  the  beautiful  weather  here.   And  I  had  my  first  show  of  the  season  in  Harrisburg,  PA--

And,  I've  been  painting  a  lot  too--starting  with  my  warm  up  way--

......with  papers,  and  then  making  some  art--

.....just  a  little  bit  of  what's  been  going  on  around  here,  and  Summer  too!

A New Tutorial For You--Using Your Paper Scraps

If  you  like  to  collage,  then  you  probably  have  bits  and  pieces  of  paper  that  you  can't  throw  out--any  kind--scrapbook,  book  pages,  hand  painted,  gelli  printed--ANY  kind.  In  my  case,  it's  most  likely  the  painted  kind.   When  I  get  a  build  up  like  this,  I'll  get  out  my  surface--whatever  is  on hand  and  my  gel  medium,  and  start  gluing  those  papers  down--cutting  and  gluing....

I  could  do this over  and  over--yes,  I  have  that  many  papers....

My Online Class With Jodi Ohl--Dirty Flirty Birds....and...More About My September Workshop

I  haven't  been  taking  a  lot  of  online  classes  lately--just  haven't  been  really  able  to  take  the  time  to  benefit  from  them,  but  when  I  saw  that  Jodi  Ohl  was  offering  her  Dirty  Flirty  Birds  class  online,  I  knew  that  I  would  take  the  time  for  this  class.  And  I'm  so  glad  that  I  did--

....they  are  so  fun  to  create...

....and  when  you  let  them--their  own  personalities  come  out..

and  their  stories  too...

 

They  are  definitely  one  of  a  kind,  but  they're  all  a  big  happy  family--

Jodi's  class  is  great--this  isn't  the first  one  that  I've  taken  from  her--I  knew  from  her  other  classes  that  it  would  be  jam--packed  with  techniques  and  step  by  step  details  about  these  fun  birds--love  this  class!

And  I  put  my  own  spin  on  one  of  the  birds  and  did  what  I  always  do  when  I  make  new  art--

...put  it  on  a  box!

Now--changing  the  subject  a  bit--about  my  workshop  in  September--I'll  be  teaching  for  2  days,  and  here's  what  I'll  be  teaching  on  day  #2 --

we'll  be  painting  our  own  papers  to  help  create  this  shadowbox--

 All  about  home--which  can  be  personalized  with  your  own  mementos  and  even  collaged  cards, letters,  etc--lots  of  possibilities.

This  will  be  held  at  Art  Retreat  at  the  Lake  in  Mayville,  NY  at  beautiful  Lake  Chautauqua--I'm  excited  :-)

 

New Happenings and Art To Start Out The Year

Some  more  exciting  things  going on  again  for  me--I'm  now  part  of  a  local  art  gallery.   In  all  of  the  years  that  I've  been  making  mixed  media,  I  was  always  a  little  nervous  about  'putting  myself  out  there'  in  the  art  community.  But  this  year,  I  felt  it was  time--like  really...what  am  I  waiting  for??  So  needless  to  say,  I've  been  busy  this  month....

and  one  of  my  favorite  things  to  do--making  a  'tree  house'--

They're  now  all  at    Gallery  29  of  Sharon, PA--

 .......which  I'm  now  very  proud  to  be  a  part  of.   It's  a  wonderful  gallery  that  supports  many  of  the  very  talented  local  artists.   They  also  have  lots  going on  every  month  including  classes  and  workshops.

And  speaking  of  workshops, last  year  I  taught  my very  first  one--I  was  very  nervous  about  this  (to  say the  least), but  I  always  wanted  to  teach  a  workshop......so  I  did.....and  I'm  so  glad  that  I  did.   I'm  happy  to  say  that  I'll  be  going  back  again  this  year  in  Chautauqua  Lake,  New  York  for  Art  Retreat  on  the  Lake   on  September  7 & 8.  This  year  I'll  be  showing  how  to  paint  in  layers  to  create  this  piece--

.....and  for  the  next  day--looks  like  we'll  be  painting  papers  again  to make  some  some  assemblage  art.

I'm looking  forward  to  this  year---trying  to  step  outside  my  comfort  zone  a  bit---like  they  say,  you  never  know  if  you'll  like  it  unless  you  try--right??

New Art--Start to Finish

I  had  a  great  show  these  last  2  weekends--very  busy--not  much  time  to  make  any  new  art.  Needless to  say,  I  missed  my  art  room,  playing  with  paint--just  playing.  So  it  felt  good  to  do  just  that.   Here's  the  outcome  of  my  latest  playtime--

....now let  me  back  up  and show  you  the  transformation  of  this  once  old,  shabby,  dirty,  forgotten  cupboard  door....

first  step--add  some  book  pages  in  the  center  of  the  door--

... then  adding  some  Golden  fluid  acrylics Yellow  Ochre  and  Indian  Yellow  Hue (one  of  my  favorite  color  combinations)  to  the  sides  and  inside  lip  of  the  center--next--

....taking  those  same  colors  plus  some  Titan Buff  and  painting  over  the  text,  but  making  sure  not  to  completly  cover  it--I  like  the  texture  that  the  text  gives

Now  it  was  time  to  get  out  papers  that  I've  been  painting  (a  lot  of  them  were  from  my  workshop  that  I  taught  back  in  September)--

  

and  I  made some  new  textured  ones  too--

I  used  these  papers for  the  'frame'  of  the  piece--

I  don't  always  start  with  the  frame  of  the  door  when  I  do  these.  Sometimes  I  make  my  main  image  first,  which  helps  me  determine  how  I  want  to  do  the  frame.   But  this  time,  it  was  the  other  way  around--the  frame  told  me  what  colors  to  use  for  the  focal  point  of  the  piece.    Next,  was  the  main  image  with  some  more  paper  play--

And  then  back  to  my  favorite  paints--Golden  Fluid  acrylics  and  a touch  of  Prisma  NuPastels  
(a  hard  chalk  pastel--love  working  with  these)

so  happy  with  the  texture  and  layers  of  this  piece--

I  really  enjoy  working  on  these  cupboard  doors  that  I  find  at   flea  markets  and  garage  sales--found a  bunch  at  the  Springfield  flea  market  too!

An Artful Month

That's  what  has  been  going  on  around here  these  last  couple  of  weeks--getting  ready  for  my  upcoming  art  shows.   Made  up  a  new  batch  of  papers   so  I  could  'paint'  with  them--

--my  first  giraffe...but  not  my  last.....

And  in  May  I  went  shopping  at  my  most  favorite  Flea Market--the  Springfield Antique Show and Flea Market Extravaganza--with  over  2000 vendors--how  can  you  go  wrong?!

Just  a  smidgen of  what  I  found--

.........and  I  was  inspired....

And  also  my  first  show  of  the  season  in  Chagrin  Fals,  Ohio--in  a  beautfiul  park  there--look  at  my  'backdoor'  neighbors--a  family  of  ducks  and  geese--it  was  a  perfect  weekend  all  around.

So on  to  my  next  show  this  weekend  just  outside  of  Philadelphia--the  Manayunk  Arts  Festival--looking  forward  to  this  one--my  first  time  in  this  area--keeping   my  fingers  crossed  that  the  rain  holds  off!
