What I Did in February

I'm  having  trouble  updating  this  blog   (since Facebook came  into  the  picture),  so  I'm  trying  a  new  'thing'.  I'm  going  to  post  once  a  month  of  what  I've  been  up  to  creatively.

In  the  first  week  I  had  my  paints  out  and  I  always  get  Spring  fever  this  time  of  year  (if  you  live  in  a  cold  weather  climate,  you  know  what  I'm  talking  about)--so  I  painted  Spring--

Once  I  had  the  paint  out  I  did  what  I  always  do  and  started  playing  with  it.  I  do  that  with  mostly  white  cardstock  (110lb) --I  don't  need   to  think  about  it  and  try  different  techniques--if  I  don't  like  it--it's  just  paper--no  big  deal.

So  with  those  papers and  one  of  my  favorite  surfaces to  work  on  and  repurpose--a  cabinet  door--I  made  some  new  neighborhoods--Love  making  houses--

And at the end of the month I had a request from a poppy lover for 3 different pieces--

These were all started with a layer of collage (text pages) and then I painted over them with acrylics.  I  like  the  texture  the  printed  text  gives  under  the  paint.

In  between  all  of  this,  I've  been  cleaning  and  decluttering  my  art  space  (which  in  my  case,  is  my  whole  house)  and  I  have  been  listing  in  my  Etsy  shop--my  latest  listings--

So  that's  my  art  month  in  a  blog  post.   This is  not  my  favorite  time  of  year--weather wise--I  hate  the cold,  and  I  become  a  hermit,  but   it's  also   in  a  way, my  favorite.   There's  not  a  lot  going  on,  so  I  spend  more  time  in  my  studio,  which  is  definitely  my  happy  place!

Mini Tutorial--Painting Papers

I  have  lots  of  tutorials on  painting  papers  for  collage  or  for you  to  use  as  your  art  journal  pages  on  my  blog  here,  and I've  been  playing  some  more  so  I  wanted  to  share.  First  one,  using  110lb  cardstock  that  I  get  at  Staples--

I'm  sure  a  lot  of  you  who  shop  at  Hobby Lobby  now  know  that  they  had  a  massive  clearance  on  their  art  supplies--FW inks (acrylic inks)  being  one  of  them.   Well,  I  already  had  them,  and after  seeing  all  of  the  you tube  videos  up  on  these  inks,  it  made  me  get  out  my  neglected ones.  This  is  such  a  fun  technique--just  put  a  few  drops  on  a  non-porous  surface  (I  used  wax  paper),  spray  with  water,  put  the  paper  down  on it,  smoosh  it,  and  lift.  I  then  sprayed  some  91%  alcohol  on  it  while  still wet,  and  let  it  do  its  own  thing--a  different  result  every  time--and  every  time,  I  love  the  result.

Next  I  started  playing  with  gesso--

I  used  my  new  stencil  from  Crafter's Workshop--Crazy Waves.   I  know  it's  hard  to  see,  but  I  put  the  entire  stencil  on  the  paper  using  the  gesso  and  waited  for  it  to  dry  (the  hardest  part)--but you  can  also  use  a  heat  gun  if  you're  impatient  like  me.   The  result  after  adding  a  few  paint  colors--

I  added  some  complimentary  acrylic  paint  colors   to  the  paper  and  then  wiped  some  back  to  expose parts  of  the  gesso--just  kept  doing  it  until  I  was  happy  with  the  result.

More  playing  with  gesso--

On  the  one  paper,  I  painted  the  paper  first (with  the orange  paint)  and  then  stenciled  with  gesso,  and  on  the  other  paper  I  applied the  gesso  fairly  heavy  and  then  pulled a  texture  comb  through  it  to  make  some  swirls.   And,  the  next  step,  making  sure  all  was  dry  before  going  on--finished  result--

Just  lots  of  playing  with  paint  and  more  stencils  and  mark -making--the  gesso  will  always  resist  what  you  do  to it,  which  is  the  best  part  about  using  it.

And  the  next, I'm  sure  everyone  who  likes  to  paint  papers  has  done  this.   Get  out  those  old  scrapbook  papers  that  have  been  laying  around  for  years. 

.....and  paint  over  them....

And  some  you  can  use  the  original  design  to  help  make  your  completed  paper--

And  in  the  one  case,  I  loved  the  end  result  painted  paper  so  much,  that  I  had  to  use  it  as  the  main  focal  theme--

The  paper helped  me  tell  the  story.  

And  also,  when  I  paint  my  papers,  I  always  put  a  sheet  of  white  craft  paper  underneath  to  catch  all  of  the  extra  paint.  And  then  when  I'm  finished,  I'll take  the  'back splash'  paper  and  add  some  more  stencils  or  whatever  to  it  for  the  finishing  touch--

There's  a  lot going  on  here,  but  this  is  great  for  collage.

Painting  papers  is  such  a  relaxing  way  of  making  art--no  pressure--just  play,  and  if  you  don't  like  the  result--paint  over  it--it's  just  a  piece  of  paper!

My First Workshop!

My  first  workshop---I  was  very  apprehensive at  first,  but  all  that  changed  once  I  met  my  students  and  they  made  me  feel  much  more  relaxed  before  I  even  started.    The  workshop  was  in  Mayville,  NY--Chautauqua Lake--

beautiful  get-away spot--fairly  close  to  my  home,  and  I've  never  taken  advantage  of  it  before   (I  will now,  though!)

....and  here's  where  Art  Retreat  at  the  Lake  took  place--Lisa's  beautiful  home  (her  get-away too).  I  love  this  house--an  older  home  that's  updated,  but  she's  kept  its  original  personality--it's  very  cool!

And  then  I  showed  them  my  art  process  for  warming  up  by  playing  with  paint--

At  first,  they  were  a  little  reluctant  to  let  go,  but  as  we  all  know,  once  you  warm  up,  you    get  into  that  zone--

 .......and  they  made  Awesome  papers!

I  really  like   how  their  personalities  came  out  by  the  colors  AND  the  techniques  that  they  chose--their  papers  were  unique  to  them--like  a  fingerprint (everyone's  is  different)

Part 2  of  the  class--where  they  took  their  papers  and  made  their  pieces--

It  was  fun  seeing  everyone  'painting'  with  their  papers--that's  how  I  see  it--your  painted  papers  are  your  medium  that  you're  using  to  create  your  piece.   I'm  hoping  that  this  class  inspired  them  to  take  what  they've  learned  and  go  from  there.   I  learned  a  lot  too--what  to  do   better  when  I  do  this  again  as  far  as  organization  goes---and  yes,  we're  going  to  do  it  again  next  year--same  time,  same  place.   Thank  you  Lisa  for  a  great  experience!!

So  for  me  next  is  my  show  in  October--big  2  weekend  show  (a  very  fun one).  But......one  more  detour  before  I  start  getting  ready  for  it.  I'll  be  heading  to  Springfield, OH  next  weekend  for  my  absolute  favorite  flea  market  --The  Springfield  Antique Show  and  Flea  Market  Extravaganza--LOVE-IT!...........and,  what  the heck,  as  long  as  I'm  in  the  area,  I'm  going  to  check  out  The  Country  Living  Fair  in  Columbus.  I've  never  been  there,  but  Lisa  highly  recommended  it,  and  I  have  a  feeling  it's  going  to  be  another  favorite  of  mine  :-)

Another First For Me--I'll Be Teaching!

Yes,  I'm  going  to  be  teaching  my  first  workshop--something  I've  always  wanted  to  do,  but  now  that it's  coming  up  in  just  a  few  days,  I'm  Very  nervous  (thinking--'what  did  I  get  myself  into?!')  I  knew  that  I'd  be  feeling  this  way--but  you  have  to  get  that  'first  time'  done,  and  then  you're  fine.....I  hope  :-)

I'm teaching  about  my  current  love--paper  and  paint  and  collage--I  love  sharing  my  techniques  here,  so  why  not  in  person!

First,  we'll  be  playing  with  paint, paper  and  also  the  new  Gelli® 4"round  plate--

Everyone  likes  making  these  papers,  but  wonder  what  can  they  do  with  all  of  them,  which  will  be  part 2  of  my  class--

I'll  bring  projects  for  them--to  make  themselves  or  just  to  use  as  inspiration  for  whatever  art  that  they  would  like  to  make

Or  they  can  make  papers  with  a  specific color  theme  in  mind--

There really is no  end  to  what  you  can  do  with  these  papers--

Painting  papers,  for  me,  is  my  warm-up  for  making  an  art  piece,  and  I'm  hoping  this  is  how  it  will  be  for  everyone  in  my workshop--just  get  out  the  paint  and  all  of the  painting  'tools'  and  just  have  fun--not  worrying  about  the  outcome.
