My Nesting Boxes

Now  that  my  show  season  is  starting  up, I  have  been  seriously   busy  since  I've  been back   from  Tennessee  and  all  of  those  fun  flea  markets.   I  have  so  much  "new"  stuff  here  to  play  around  with,  I  don't  know  where  to  start.    I  finally  decided  on  these  wood  boxes  that  I  found  there---

Aren't  these  so  cute?!   The  smallest  is  about  3 x 4  inches  and  the  largest  is  8 x 10,  and  the  larger  they  are,  the  deeper--there's  8  of  them  all  together.   So,  I  decided  to  do  something  with  all  8  of  them. 

Starting  with  the  smallest,  and  with  more  help  from  my  flea  market  finds--

This  cute  little  doll.....and  I  had  so  much  fun  making  her,   that  I  decided  to  incorporate  dolls  in  all  of  the  boxes  with specific  themes--

A  lot  of  the  items  that  I  used  for  these  boxes  came  right  from  Tennessee.  I  actually  didn't  hoard  them  this  time  (which  I  tend  to do)--I  let  them  help  me  put  these  pieces  together.

I  love  them  all!!

And  my  only  regret is--is  that  I  only  bought 1  set  of  these  boxes  when  I  was  there  (and  there  were  more  there  too).   They  were  only  $3.00  for  all  8--why  didn't  I  get  more???

Back From Highway 127!

It's  so  good  to  be  back  in  weather  where  I'm  not  melting  anymore.   We  had  a  good  time,  but  it  was  very  very  hot,  and   for  the  most  part  rainy--but  none  of  these  factors  stopped  me  from  doing  some  serious  shopping.

This  is  what  we  saw  for  miles  and  miles--these  clusters  of  flea  markets  jam-packed  with  soooo   much  good  stuff--it  was  overwhelming.

I'll  show  you  some  of  the  best  that  I  found--

....vintage  items  from  the  past  that  have  been  forgotten---I  always  want  to  rescue  them--especially  the  photos--who  gives  away  their  family  photos  anyway??

...more  fun  "rusty  gold"  items--I'm  a  sucker  for  old  hardware--I  have  pounds  of  it--enough  to  last  me  for  2  lifetimes...

....and  look  at  these  large  spools  and  bobbins---I've  never  seen  a  booth  like  this....he  had  every  size  and  shape  of  spools  and  bobbins  that  you  could  imagine--I  wonder  if  I'll  ever  see  this  booth  again...

.....and  please  help  me.....I  can't  stay  away  from  children's  blocks.....I  Love  them!!

There's  more....lots  more....but  these  items  were  my  most  favorite.  

They're all  put  away  now--I'm  becoming  very  organized  with  storing  everything,  which  I'm  really  proud  of.   These  are  my  art  supplies  and  tools  for  helping  me  make  pieces  like  these--

I  mix  the  old  and  the  new  to  make  these  fun  little  shadowboxes....and  they  all  started  out  like  this--

These  6 x 6  gallery  canvases  flipped  over  to  become  the  shadowboxes  that  you  see.

And  before  I  leave--I  also  wanted  to  show  you  where  we  went  in  Nashville--no  flea  markets,  but  other  very  cool  places--

For  you  American  Picker  fans--this  is  Antique  Archaeology--Mike  and  Frank's  second  store  that  they  opened  up  in  Nashville,  and  yes--you're  seeing  this  right--a  line  to  get  in--the  place  was  too  crowded,  so  we  had  to  wait  about  20  minutes.  I  saw  some  of  the  actual  items  that  they  picked  on  the  program--very  fun  place!!

The  Hermitage  Place  (aka  Andrew  Jackson's  plantation)  Photography  wasn't  allowed  inside--too  bad,  because  it  was  beautiful, and  95%  of  the  home's  furnishings  were  authentic,  right  down  to  the  wallpaper  on  the  walls.

...and  finally  a  backstage  tour  of  the  Grand  Ole  Opry--Loved  this!!---What  a  great  history  to  this  place!

Tennessee  is  a  beautiful  place  to  visit,  and  we  had  a  fun  time.....and  the  Highway 127  sale  was  just  icing  on  the  cake!

Who Are You?

That's  the  name  of  my  new  online  class  that  I'm  taking  with  Jodi  Ohl  over  at  the  Artful  Gathering  ning  site.    It's  all  about  whimsical  owls--something  new  for  me.   I've  been  liking  all  of  these  owls  popping  up  everywhere,  so  I  decided  to  give  them  a  try.   But  what  I  also  like  about  this  class  are  the  background  techniques  that  we  start  out  with--

---great  texture  and  very  quick  to  accomplish.     I  really  like  the  layers  that  you  start out  with  because  they   always  come  peeking  through  the  finished  piece,  and   I've  now  fallen  in  love  with painting  owls--

So  I'm  making  this  short---I'm  getting  ready  to  leave  for  the  rest  of  the  week.    I'm  so  excited--I'm  going  to  the  Highway  127  sale--700  miles  of  flea  markets  and  garage  sales  starting  on  Thursday  until  Sunday  from  dawn  to  dusk--it's  awesome!    This  will  be  the  third  time  that  we've  gone  there,  and  the  state  of  Tennessee  is  our  favorite  place  to  find  good  sales.   We're  ending  with  a  side  trip  to  Nashville--looking  forward  to  that  too!

I  hope  I  find  this  booth  when  I'm  there--

--because  we  love  to  haggle too! (what  a  fun  word...)

Playing With Prompts and Plaster (and a Giveaway to Share)

Kind  of  a  weird  title,  but  that's  just  what  I've  been  doing.   I  have  so  much  stash  here,  and  sometimes  when  I'm  looking  for  something,  I  get  side-tracked  and  find  something  else,  which  leads  me  to  another  item---my  temporary  muses.   And  this  time,  there  were  3  of  them--

...and  here's  how  they  came  together--

and  a  little  info  about  these  2  little  ones--

I've  had  them  for  a  couple  of  years  now.   I'll  find  stuff  like  this, and  then  I  don't  want  to  part  with  it.  It's  not  like  I  had  them  out  or  anything--they  were  just  tucked  away  in  the  cute  little  box  that  they  came  in.   So  I  figured it  was  time  to  let  them  go,  and  be  out  in  the  world  again.   I  found  them  at  the  127 Corridor Sale --said  to  be  the  "largest  yard  sale"  (approximately  600  miles).   It  always  starts  the  first  week  in  August  for  5  days  from  dawn  till   dusk,  and  we  try  to  go  when  we  can.  Last  year  we  didn't  go,  but  this  year  we  are!--and  I  can't  wait!!

And  for  the  plaster  part  of  this  post--when  I  was  making  my  piece  that  I  showed  you  HERE,  I  had  made  up  too  much  of  the  plaster  of  paris,  and  once  it's  dry,  it's  dry.   So  I  put  the  rest  of  it  on  another  wood  panel  that  I  had,  and  here's  the  result  of  that--

This  time  I  painted  mostly  with  gouache,  which  is  basically  a  very  thick  watercolor  in  a  tube  with  very  intense  color--another  great  medium  to  work  with,  but  a  bit  on  the  pricey  side.  I  just  love  the  results  you  get  when  you  mix  the  watercolors with  the  plaster--

......and  LOVE  that  texture!

So In The End....

I  did  very  well  on  my  "business"  trip.  I  finally  emptied  out  all  of  my  bags  and  put  everything  in places  that  I  can   remember  where  they  are.  I'm  a  little  more  organized  now this  year  than  I was  last  year,  so I think  I'll  be  able  to  remember.  And  I've  been  trying  to  phase  out  of   making  over  old  furniture  but  I  just  couldn't  resist--

This  Singer  sewing  table  makes  a great  base  for  a  table.  We  have  larger  cupboard  doors and  they  make  the  perfect  table  top!

I  really  do  have  a  problem  with  lace.

And   do  you  think  I  have  enough  knobs  now?.........I  don't  know......

Did  I  mention  that  I'm  also  partial  to  vintage  kitchen  towels  and  ladies'  hankies?  Hankies!!--how could  you  not  love  these?!  And  don't  forget  about  those  buttons!!

And  I'm  always  on  the  look-out  for  a  rooster  to  add  to  my  collection.  I  saw  alot  of  many  unique ones,  but  I  have  too  many  and  not  enough  space,  so  I  was  thinking  more  on  the  smaller  side.   It  was  a  toss-up  between  this  one--

(This  one  is  pretty  neat--it's  made  out  of  terra  cotta.)

Or  one  of  these  for  only  $6.00  each--

This  one  was  really  speaking  to  me--literally,  but  in  the end  I  didn't  think  that  he  would  be  too  happy  with  me  in  my  art  room,  so  I  went  with  the  terra  cotta  one.

This  was  a  4-day  sale  and  we  were  there  from  the very  beginning  bright  and  early  on  Thursday  morning,  and I  was  just  oooohing   and  awwhing  at  all  of  the  "treasures"  before  me.   Well   by  Saturday  afternoon,  all  of  these  "treasures" (and  they were  EVERYWHERE)  was  all  starting  to  look  like  junk .(I   know  that's  what  alot  of   people   think  anyway,  but  not   me  : )  I  pretty  much  hit  the  wall,  so  we  just  took  the  time  to relax  in  Chattanooga  and  later  Gatlinburg--more  about that  in  my next  post.

Back From Highway 127 Yard Sale

Hey  guys  I'm  back!  I've  only  been  gone  for  6  days,  but  it seems  like 6 years!  I  am  completely  worn  out.  I  don't  know about  this  vacation  thing.  Everytime  I  come  back,  it  takes  me a few  days  to get  my  energy  back.  I  think  I  might  be  doing  this  wrong.  Maybe  I  should  be  taking  the  time  to actually relax!

And  the  heat  didn't   help  any   either.  Everyday  was  in  the  90's  with  very  high  humidity.  Last  Thursday  was  also  very  stormy, scary  weather,  but that sure  didn't  stop any  of  the  crowds.

Look  at  that  traffic!!--but  everyone  was  very  patient  and  very  courteous  with  each  other.

Lots  of  great  booths  everywhere  we  went too.

And  I  was  right--Flower  Power  IS  still  alive!!

 

Right  down  to  the  VW  Bus!!

You'll see everything here!! We saw alot of freshly churned ice cream, but this one was a first for me.

Yes,  he  was  churning  the ice  cream,   and  he  was  earning  his  living  that  day.  Poor thing--it was  so  incredibly  hot out!!

So you're probably wondering what I brought home with me-----so am I.   I bought so much stuff, that I can't even remember.  It's kind of like Christmas for me   going  through  all of  the bags here. I haven't even finished looking through them yet.  I"ll show you some of what I've gone through.

I   have  a  weakness  for  vintage fabrics,  lace, and crocheted  doilies.  I've  crocheted  alot  of  thread   doilies  in  my  day,  so  I  can  appreciate  the  time  to  it  takes  to  make  just  one  of  these.   I  have  enough   fabric  now  to  last  me  for  2  lifetimes!

Hey , look  at  this  --more  lace : )   Also,  some great  deeper  cigar  boxes, and  you'll  always  see  the  old  sewing  machine  drawers  at  the  Highway  127  sale--they  make  great  shadowboxes!

This  is  just  a  fraction  of  all  the  hardware  that  I  found.  And  those  porcelain  doorknobs  were only  $1.00  each,  which  is  very  unusual  at  this sale.   Usually  all  of  the  vintage  doorknobs  are  pretty  high  in  price.

And  handwritten  letters--I  absolutely  LOVE  this  lost  art--handwritten  letters!  And  look  at that  shorthand  book.  I  took  3  years  of  this  in  High  School.   Boy,  that  really  paid  off,  didn't  it?

There's  more,  but  I'll continue  on  in  my  next  post.  And I  wanted  to thank everyone  for  their  help  with  my  laptop  problem.  I'm  going to  have  to say  that  MAC  won  out.   Actually, my  son  Nick  has  one, and  he's  coming  for a  visit  in  a couple  of days too  : )  So  we'll talk.   But  for  right now,  they're  suppose  to  send  us  a  brand  new  one--I'm   still   not  holding   my   breath.  All   I   know  is  that  I  really  miss the speed  of  the laptop.  I've  been  working  on  our old home computer,  which  is  very  very slow,  and  you   have  to  be  very  patient  with  it (kind  of  like  blogger--I'm  having  a  heck  of  a time  this  morning  trying  to  do  this post!) ,  but  I  have  to  say  that  I'm  kind  of  losing  my patience.  But  it's  been  good  to  us, and  you  know  what  kind  it  is?  Well,  it  rhymes  with  the  word   Bell  : )
