A New Cat Tutorial For 2016--My Step-by-Step Process

Welcome  to  2016  everyone!   I've  decided  to  start  out  the  year  again  with  another  piece  of  cat  art,  since my   cat  tutorial  from  a  year  ago  was  SO  popular.   So  here's  another  cat  tutorial  for  you--basically  the  same  thing--just  a  little  bit  of  a  variation  from  the  original.

Once  again  I  warmed  up  by  getting  out  my  Gelli® plate  and  my  paints  and  brushes  and  had  some  fun--

.....and  again  I'm  just  using  here  110lb  card stock  that  I  find at  my  local  office  supply  store  (Staples).  I  also  like  to   use   scrapbook  papers   that   I'm  not  too  crazy  about  that  I   get  in  the  pads  --they work  great,  and  you  can  get  some  of  the  background  design  of  the  paper  to  peak   through  if  you  like  or  cover  it  up  completely--the  heavier  scrapbook  papers  hold  up  really  well  to  layers  of  paint.  And  book  pages  are  fun  to  use  also--good  ones  are  the  over-sized  children's  picture dictionaries  or  story  books (depending  on  the  paper--they  also  hold  up  well  to  anything  that  you  may  want  to  do to  them).

I  chose  my  'color  palette'  for  my  6 x 18  birch  cradle  board--

.....and  made  my  background  with  my  papers--

.....and  then  I  outlined  the  moon  on one  of  my  papers from  the  template  that  I  made,  got  out  my  gel  medium,  put  it  on  my  surface,  and  then  added  some  washi  tape  borders.....

next--I  drew  my  cat  template,  cut  it  up  and  numbered  it  for  my  papers  that   I  chose  to  use  for  the  cat--

--after  that,  got  the  gel  medium  out  again  and  placed  my  cat  on  the  moon  along  with  some  scattered  stars--

This  is  when  you  want  to  bring  the  cat  out  of  the  background  by highlighting  and  shading  areas  of  it    I  used  my  inktense  blocks  for  this  part.   If  you're  not  familiar  with  these,  they're  watercolor sticks.   You  just  color  in  the  area  with  them  and  then  apply  water--the  difference  is  that  they're  made  with  ink  and  are  very  intense  color  (I  guess  that's  why  they're  called  inktense).  They  did  exactly  what  I  wanted  them  to  do--

You  can  also  see  here  that  I  outlined  everything  with  black--still  using  my  favorite  permanent  pen  that  I  used  last  year--my  Fude  Ball  pen.

And  I  also  let  my  muse  take  over  and  let  the  piece  tell  me  what  else  it  needed.   I  added  some  ephemera  flowers  on  the  body  and  along  the  border--

And  I  added  the word 'wish'......and  a  little  more  embellishing...

......and  also finishing up the sides.......

So  now  that  it's  all  finished,  it's  ready  to  find  a  new  home--it's  for  sale  in  my  Etsy  shop, which  you  can  find  HERE.

Playing With Prompts and Plaster (and a Giveaway to Share)

Kind  of  a  weird  title,  but  that's  just  what  I've  been  doing.   I  have  so  much  stash  here,  and  sometimes  when  I'm  looking  for  something,  I  get  side-tracked  and  find  something  else,  which  leads  me  to  another  item---my  temporary  muses.   And  this  time,  there  were  3  of  them--

...and  here's  how  they  came  together--

and  a  little  info  about  these  2  little  ones--

I've  had  them  for  a  couple  of  years  now.   I'll  find  stuff  like  this, and  then  I  don't  want  to  part  with  it.  It's  not  like  I  had  them  out  or  anything--they  were  just  tucked  away  in  the  cute  little  box  that  they  came  in.   So  I  figured it  was  time  to  let  them  go,  and  be  out  in  the  world  again.   I  found  them  at  the  127 Corridor Sale --said  to  be  the  "largest  yard  sale"  (approximately  600  miles).   It  always  starts  the  first  week  in  August  for  5  days  from  dawn  till   dusk,  and  we  try  to  go  when  we  can.  Last  year  we  didn't  go,  but  this  year  we  are!--and  I  can't  wait!!

And  for  the  plaster  part  of  this  post--when  I  was  making  my  piece  that  I  showed  you  HERE,  I  had  made  up  too  much  of  the  plaster  of  paris,  and  once  it's  dry,  it's  dry.   So  I  put  the  rest  of  it  on  another  wood  panel  that  I  had,  and  here's  the  result  of  that--

This  time  I  painted  mostly  with  gouache,  which  is  basically  a  very  thick  watercolor  in  a  tube  with  very  intense  color--another  great  medium  to  work  with,  but  a  bit  on  the  pricey  side.  I  just  love  the  results  you  get  when  you  mix  the  watercolors with  the  plaster--

......and  LOVE  that  texture!

Flip It

That's  what  I  do  when  I  want  to  change  things  up  a  bit.   I  usually  work  on  the  gallery  canvases  with  the  deep  sides,  and  when  I  want  to  go  a  bit  more  dimensional,  I  just  flip  it  over  to  make  a  shadowbox.    In   this  case,  it's  a  wood  cradle  board-but  the same  thing.  So  it  started  out  like  this--

I  love  these  little  wood  houses  that  I  found  on  Etsy.   The  one  on  the  left  is  from  Indiandollartworks.    Her  main  thing  there  are  her  art  dolls,  which  are  awesome!   Right  now  she's  not  offering  the  houses--hopefully  soon  though.   And  the  ones  on  the  right  I  just  discovered   over  at  ClickityClack  where  they  have  a  number  of  unfinished  wood  items.    So  here's  how  it  ended  up  after  I  was  finished  with  it--

I  just   got  out  my  papers  and  images  of  my  art  and  all  those  crazy  little  embellishments  and  had  some  fun!

And  continuing  on  with  my  Fresco  Workshop- -this  time  Joyce  had  us  make  a  box,  which  you  know  how  much  I  enjoy  making  these--so  that's  what  I  did!
