It's nothing new for me to make a collaged vase with collaged flowers, but I have to say that I've never made postage stamp flowers, but why not? I thinks all stamps are little pieces of art with all of their different color and variety-- just like flowers. I put this on a piece of wood measuring 12 x 12 , so I knew I wanted them fairly large to make a vase and even a tablecloth--
So I went on google to search for stamps, and when I found them, I just enlarged them. Sometimes when I'm making something, I want that one little thing for the finishing touch. And I know I have it here--I just have to find it. I'll search this ENTIRE house for the ENTIRE day, and never find it, and now I think that I've been looking in the wrong place. I should look in the Google house, because you can find anything there!
I really do believe that in the not to distant future, there will be no such thing as a postage stamp. My son who is soon to be 23, (and doesn't live at home), I don't think has ever bought a stamp in his life, and not because I give them to him--it's because he has no need for them--everything he does that would require a stamp, he will do electronically. I think the post office is still making stamps probably more for the collectors and the mixed media artists. They've always been collectible, but when they're no longer available, they'll be highly collectable.
Kind of like green stamps--remember those--you got them when you went grocery shopping, and when you filled up so many books of them, you could go to the green stamp store, and get what ever you had enough books for--and they had everything there. I found a whole sheet of these and the unfilled book at a flea market a couple of years ago, and it was like I discovered gold. How about the Raleigh coupons on the back of the Raleigh cigarettes--same idea--great marketing strategy on the part of this tobacco company--if you smoke more of these and faster, you can get your "free" item with your coupons--brilliant!!
Someday, I think it will be the same for these wonderful little pieces of art--I hope that I'm wrong.
Also, on a side note--are there any Survivor fans out there?--well I sure am. I've been watching it since the very beginning (10 years ago). It's starting this Thursday--Heroes vs. Villians, and I can't wait!!!!

This is beautifull, as is all your work!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful and what an outstanding collage and design! Great creative entry!
ReplyDeleteYour vase and flowers are beautiful. And you're so right about postage stamps. Even though they keep going up in price, it will be a shame when they stop making them. I remember green stamps... My parents practically decorated the house with them! Other beautiful stamps that likely won't go away are hunting and fishing stamps...
ReplyDeleteYour collage is great....who would have thought postage stamps...
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Butterfly
Oh-so many things to comment on! First of all, I love your vase and flowers. What a great idea. I have a big envelope full of all kinds of wonderful stamps (used to have a stamp album) and I remember green stamps. I loved gluing those into the books and going to the green stamp store to pick something out. And ah Survivor--wouldn't miss a season!!
ReplyDeleteWhat great postage stamp art. Fabulous collage. I love the convenience of all things electronic but in my heart, I long for a handwritten letter once more.
ReplyDeleteWhat a genius piece! I didn't have time for an entry this week - I was going to raid my old stamp collection! We had green stamps in the UK too - green shield stamps they were called! I remember sticking them in a little book for my Dad!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful art, I love to use old stamps in my pieces too!!
ReplyDeleteOh My Gosh...This is truly amazing!! I absolutely love it. So creative!
ReplyDeleteReally beautiful work!!
ReplyDeleteWooooooooooooooooow this is really beautiful. Love the flowers.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and brilliant, Diane!
ReplyDeleteI love this so much!!! It is so unique and beautiful! i would love to see it in person. You should make prints and put it in Etsy.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that I have never watched Survivor. I think I tried to but I have this fear of being stuck somewhere where I am hot and uncomfortable with no food or diet coke so I have never been able to hang with it. But I do understand getting excited about favorite TV shows coming on.. I do have some other favorites though, Friday Night lights, Lost, Gray's Anatomy and...don't tell anyone this...The Bachelor..shhhh... and I do occasionally watch the Kardashians until I throw a shoe at the screen and turn it off.
Gorgeous piece,as all your work is. I bet you're right about the postage stamps,I better go start getting a bunch for my art. How's Norahs class going,it looks like fun!
ReplyDeleteDiane, your stamp flowers in the stamp vase are just wonderful! It's always fascinating to see what a creative mind can think of! And your story about stamps was great reading, too!
ReplyDeleteLet's start this comment off with SURVIVOR - oh heck yes ever since the beginning and Russel should have won this past season. OK, that off my mind, I love your blossoms. I so hope our stamps won't go the way of green stamps, I really do. I remember collecting them, saving them, turning them in for goodies. Oh my. Thanks for visiting the Honeysuckles, my friend! Like I said your creation is a beauty - a beauty!
ReplyDeletegreat piece
ReplyDeleteand boy can I relate to looking all day to find just the right finishing touch
my husband likes to mail the bills but I pay mine online. probably the only other thing we mail is Christmas cards.
so much of what we know of history comes from written correspondence - where will future historians find records from today? by then all our computers will be long gone and there goes all the email - which is never as beautifully worded as a letter
Diane, I think you have invented a new form of mail art. Your vase of altered postage stamps is superb. What an original and great idea! Added to that, your artwork is scrumptious and amazing. Take a bow!!
ReplyDeleteOMG Diane...I've got an entire huge container filled with stamps and another collector's book more than half filled. I've made some tapestry-like collages with them but I'm just holding onto them to see what happens. Trying to think of a way to merge them with my art. My great aunt collected them and my father-in-law did as well so I've got tons. Your piece is awesome!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely outstanding and unique!! bravo!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's so pretty in here, I just want to hang out all day!
ReplyDeleteThis is so beautiful Diane and such an original idea! I particularly love the stamp you have used on the vase!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about what you are saying about stamps, the art of letter writing will soon be something of the past.
Funny my DH and I were just talking about these grocery store stamps yesterday, how times have changed, and in such a short time actually...
Absolutely gorgeous
ReplyDeleteSuper postage stamp piece. I really like the colors. I've always liked postage stamps and when I was little my aunt and I had quite the collection (I wish I still had them to use in my art). Here in Hermitage, PA we got about 4 inches of snow yesterday/last night and it's still snowing. It's so cold too. I'm ready for SPRING! I bet you're really getting hit with the white stuff in Erie!
ReplyDeleteSmiles-

Oh, Yes! I remember green stamps. And I LOVE postage stamps with their wonderful designs. It's sad to say, but I'm inclined to agree with you - one day they'll go the way of the dodo bird. **sigh** Kind of like handwritten letters . . . Hugs, Terri xoxo
ReplyDeleteHow creative, and absolutely beautiful. I never cease to be amazed at the scope of talent that finds its way to our blog! Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
ReplyDeleteGreat and beautiful idea!!!
ReplyDeleteDiane~it's beautiful!!!!!!!!as always.
ReplyDeleteJust by looking at these, I could tell it's yours~ :)
Okay, Diane, this is just too clever! I would never have thought to use postage stamps in such a creative and pleasing way. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about stamps being little works of art, they are so pretty, even with a cancel on them still pretty, but then we like layering so we would think that.
ReplyDeleteYou do wonderful creative things, so much fun to visit and see.
Ooh, I love this piece. It is very beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. Job well done!
ReplyDeleteYour collage is truly a beautifull piece of art, and so wonderfull colors too.
ReplyDeleteAnd what you write, I think unfortunately is the truhf of tomorrow,-like you say yourself.
What a shame, that we are loosing so many small wonders because of
"progress", I think the world will look pale and dull.

I love reading your blog !!
ReplyDeleteAnd your entry.... absolute one of my favorites Diane !!
My favourite piece, Diane, so creative, so clever - stunning!
ReplyDeletelove the stamp idea. never would have thought of blowing up the great graphic potential in that little item. Love the diversity of your work!
ReplyDeleteOh I loved this! Did you decopage the stmps? And if so, how do you get the ink NOT to run? I've made some domino necklaces with Google images and they seem to start to "bleed" with the wet ModPoge?
ReplyDeleteGreat piece, for sure :-)
When letters were a big thing...you remember those, right? Well the Post office did a special edition triangle stamp that I just love...I think I have one somewhere, because I knew I had to save it, but I wish they would come out with more
ReplyDeletehey diane - do you like curries? or the flavours of coriander, lime and coconut? if so then laksa is for you lol!!! check this out...

omg! searching the house! I will suddenly think of some item I used to have and I will waste hours looking for it! I used to collect stamps when I was a kid, and I still have lots. every now and then I get the urge to glue them on a collage, but then I decide to save them. I love snail mail! thanks for the sweet comments over on my blog; I would love to have lunch!
ReplyDeleteYou always create such wonderful art. Love the idea of stamps mixed media. Wow stamps maybe be out totally, oooh! One for the memory books!
