All Things Paper

I  have  so  much  of  this  stuff--paper!   Every time  I  go  to  garage  sales,  I  always  come  home with  at  least  one  book--I  can't  help  it---I  have  a  weakness for  them--the  older  the  better.  I  love  the  way  they  smell  and  the  way  the  pages  turn  brittle  with  age,  and  the  images  too.   And  every time,  I  go  to  a  craft  store,  I  end  up  in  the  scrapbook  dept.   I  just  love  paper!   At  times  it  gets  a  bit  overwhelming  what  to  use.   But  last  year  I  had  found  this  over-sized  world  atlas,  and  I  loved  the  front  inside  pages--

And  I  found  the  most  perfect  piece  to  use one  of  these  pages  for--

...and  I  went  from  there...searching  for  bits  and  pieces  of  other  paper  and  images--just  whatever  was  in  sight--

...with  some  thrown  in  textured  stenciling,  rub-ons,  and  embellishments....

Very  fun  piece  to  do....and  that  probably  used  less  than  1%  of  the  all  the  paper  that  I'm  drowning  in.

And  let  me  share  something  else  with  you.   I  am  not  a gardener  (back  in  the  day  I  was..but  not  anymore).  However,  I  love  to  have  hanging  flower  baskets  all  over.   So  yesterday  morning  I  was  watering  this  one--

...and  I  decided  to  take  it  down  to  pick  off  the  dead  flowers  and  leaves...la, la, la, la,la.....and  look  what  I  found...

!!..I  didn't  disturb  it  though--for  any  of  your  bird  experts  out  there..will  Mama  bird  come  back??   and  if  she  does,  how  do  I  go  about  watering  my  plant  but  keeping  her  home  in  tact??

I love this latest piece! Love it!!

As far as the nest goes.... mummy birdie built it there with all the watering so I'm guessing she won't mind. It'll be you waiting and watching that will worry her. ;-p lol

Hugs to you!!

what a wonderful way to use the old map book - what a lovely happy round face. Isn't it fun to collect 'stuff'- especially old books

Your worldly girl is a crazy good fun piece. Yes to what Michele said about the bird. But if the nest is active, you should see another egg today.

You found just the right paper for that face or the right face for the paper. :) Gorgeous as always. :)

I am developing a bit of vintage paper love myself, Diane. I LOVE how you used part of the world atlas to create your beautiful sun piece. I quite fond of sun & moon pieces.

That paper fits perfectly in your piece. See you needed that paper! LOL about you drowning in paper.

And your plant is beautiful,I don't have a green thumb, its more like black,I usually kill all my plants. Its sad. I don't know anything about birds and nest. But what a nice surprise to find it.

both are treasures! I love the face you put on the earth...maybe she's mother nature?

The mother will come back. I heard even if the babies fall out of the nest and you put them back it's ok. The parents will come back. So don't worry. How to water the plant, I'm not so sure. Love your new work. Very cool.

OMG! this is truly beautiful! I love the layers. I can see you did have lots of fun making this piece. It shows! And look you were rewarded for your adding beauty to the world by receiving a gift in the hanging basket. Too cool!

I love your sun with all it's papers and texture!! We had a family of wrens that lived in a hanging basket on our porch. I just watered at one edge of the plant.

very pretty! love the color and all the detail. and what a pretty flower and nest! I would think that since you didnt touch the nest or egg, the mama should be back. All summer my granny has had a bird making (multiple!) nests in her fern, and every time my little one is over they take the basket down and examine it and look at the babies, and the parents always come back.

Heather said...

PS one thing my granny does to water her plant without disturbing the nest is it, is to set the basket in a bucket of water (so just the bottom of the container is wet, of course) so she can soak it from the bottom and not have to get the nest wet.

Well I know I am going digging in my old books for some maps but of course there are umpteen things to do first. I reallylike the work in the previous post also. So glad I cam to visit you have great things to see.

Connie Schwarz said...

from what i know, dont touch the egg! leave the nest untouched! leave the basket in the same place also. it looks like a blue robins egg. only one? that is sad. hopefully there arent any cats around. but if everything remains without human scent, then the mother bird should continue minding her nest.

hows bob?

Beautiful paper and love what you've done with it. I think the mother will come back. Just leave the egg alone even though your tempted to touch it. Tee hee. Have a great day.

I love that you USE your paper finds. I have a tendency to hoard. Bad.
Your used of the map was brave & turned out beautiful.
As for your nest... Do you think there's a house finch nesting there? They are famous for doing this & there will be more eggs. All is sweet until you have some well fed babies in the nest... ;-)

WOW! A new favorite ;) LOVE this - and I agree - I do the same thing with paper and old books - and my DH brings home stuff for me all the time too as his work is across the street from a thrift store. He brought home a dozen old cookbooks the other day - it is a blessing and a curse, right? Okay, but I LOVE your new piece so very much . . . xo

Hi Diane! This piece is absolutely STUNNING!!!! So perfect for summer. :) I just love it. :)
What a sweet treat you discovered! It looks to be a robin's egg. Since you didn't touch or disturb anything, it should be fine. :) Such a beautiful perfect piece of nature. :) Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July!!!

Awesome art piece with your wonderful found paper(s)...just terrific.

I hope mama bird returns too. Just don't cut away too much foliage maybe so she feels she is hiding.

Good luck with this. Pretty plant too.

Well first I thought the sun you made was stunning. Then I just loved the purple flowers. And the cute little birds nest? Oh my! Beautiful, happy pictures. Thank you for sharing!!

kluless said...

Oh you lucky girl, to find a bird nest right there in your basket! Yes, I think Mama will return to tend the nest. A friend of mine had one in her rain gutter and the wind blew it down. Her husband used DUCT TAPE to secure it back in the gutter and they enjoyed watching her raise her brood for the rest of the season.
Your work is beautiful, as always. You should really consider teaching or online classes!!

Oh my I have the same problem....too much paper! I love this use of the map. Very clever of you. Looks like "mother" is the word of the day for you.

I love the way you used the book liner map - I love how you use different things in each piece but they still say DIANE. I'm sorry I haven't commented for so long - I seem to continually be behind on blog reading which makes me not take enuf time to comment. But I love what you do and the warmth it evokes.
