New Art-Step by Step Paper Collage

Hope  everyone  had  a  great  Holiday--it's  nice  this  time of  year  for  us  to  have  our  family  together--seems  to  get  harder  and  harder  every  year  for  everyone  to  be  in  the  same  place  at  the  same  time,  so  it  was  great.   But  I  have  to  say,  this  wears  me  out--I'm  ready  to  go  into  my  winter  hermit  lifestyle  and  into  my  art room and  do  some  playing.   I  made  this  piece    the  week  before  Christmas--I  would  take  the  time  to  have  some  play  time,  which  helps  me  unwind.   So  I  decided  that  this  piece  was  going  to  be  all about  paper  collage.  And  my  favorite  way  to  collage  is  with  my  own  papers.

I  was so  excited  to  find  these  textured  foam  rollers  at  Michaels  in  the  kids  department  (remember  to  always  look  in  the  kids  art  department  at  any  craft  store  to  see  what  you  can  find)  They  make  great  marks  on  your  paper,  journal  pages,  or  canvas.

And  I  always  like  to  play  with  new  stencils  that  I  get--

This  is  called  Circle  Fun  Stencil  which  I  found  at  Stencil  Girl  Products --just  one  of  the  many  that  I  found  there  during  their  cyber  Monday  sale--love  their  stencil  designs!

Next  I  had  a  10 x 20  wooden  cradle  board  that  I  decided  to  use  for  my  working  surface.   I  painted  it  to  get  started  and  chose   some  of  my  papers  that  I painted  to  use  on  it.

The  next  thing  I  did  was  make  a  template  of  what  I  was  going  to  put  on  that  surface,  and  I  already  knew  what  it  was  going  to  be  even  before  I  painted  my  papers--I  wanted  to  make  some  giraffe  art.....soooo  I  drew  some  giraffes  making  sure  that  they  would  be  the  right  size  for  my  10 x 20  working  space.

I  drew  the  sections   on  the  bodies  and  then  I  numbered  them--

--which  I  cut  and  used  as  my templates  for  my  papers,  and  here's  the  start  of  my  collaged  giraffes--

I  love  doing  it  this  way--I  number  the  paper  pieces  to  coincide  with  the  numbered  templates  and  it  all comes  together  just  like  a  puzzle--this  is  very  relaxing  to  me.

Next  I  added  details  to  these  2  and  brought  them  more  to  life,  with  the help  from some  ephemera,  and  some  outlining  and  highlighting  with  faber  castell  pitt  pen  markers--

So  I  knew  that  I  wanted  to  add  to  the  background,  because  that's  what  I  do.  I  decided  to  add  some  whimsy flowers  using  my  papers--

I  wanted  to tone  them  down  a  bit  so  that  they  weren't  competing  with  the  giraffes,  so  I  added  some  paint  to them,  and  I  took  that  same  paint  (Golden  brand  Light  Turquois  Phthalo--one of  my go-to  paints) to  add  to  the  background  to  create  more  depth.  I  also  gave  some  texture  to  the  flowers  with  molding  paste  in  their  centers.

And  here's  how  my  collage/painting  turned  out--

….already  found  its  permanent  home  in  Arizona!

I  hope you  all  have a  happy  2019--take  time  for  you--the  best  way  to  be  happy!!

Turned out fabulous! I never thought of doing it that way or of just sitting and creating painted papers to use for other projects. That's just great for those times you don't really have a project in mind but just want to paint and de-stress. Thank you!

Thanks Diane, I had been wondering what you use for your dark outlines. What do you use to seal your artwork to protect it?

Beautiful and fun collage/painting. thanks for the tutorial. I like how the butterfly works as a bow tie on the smaller giraffe.
