Embossed Metal & Steampunk--a Great Combination

I've  been  using  my  Graphic 45  Steampunk  Debutante  papers  again  (still  my  favorite  ones  that  I  have)  and  this  time  I've  added  a  little  metal  embossing  with  them--

and  I  added  these  fun  embellishments  to  this  piece--

This  is  where  I  have  to  thank  garage  sales  again  for  the  light  bulbs,  knobs,   and  the  old  alarm  clock  that  I  took  apart.....and  also  the  frame.   It  was  a  mirror  in  a  plain  wood  frame  that  I  found  for  50 cents.   As  a  matter  of  fact,  I  had  2  of  them--



The  best  way  to  do  steampunk!

And  speaking  of  papers,  I  just  got  some  new  ones  in  the  mail  on  Saturday  from  Stampington  that  are  SO  awesome--I  will  be  doing  something  with  them--so  stay  tuned.....

Recycling Again

Another  garage  sale  find  from  last  year--

I   guess you  would  call  this  a  shadowbox  that  just  happens   to  be  in  the  shape  of  a  house--which  is  perfect  for  anything  art-related,  especially  for  me.   Houses  are  one  of  my  favorite  themes  to  work  with.   The  minute  I  saw  it,  I  knew  what  I  could  do  with  it.

First,  I  just  covered  it  with  book  pages  and  then  stamped  it  with  this  great  numbers  stamp  that  I  have--

After  that  it  was  easy---I  have  so  much  stuff  here,  it  was  a  little  overwhelming  on  which  pieces  I  could  use.   I  decided  on  going with  a  little  bit   steampunk  again--

And I added a great vintage photo. I decided not to make a copy like I usually do and to use the actual photo. I have so many old photos now, so why not use the original. I don't know what I'm saving them for.

She was the perfect finishing touch for my altered shadowbox house!

And I'm looking forward to tomorrow. The weather is looking good for garage sales ( my first ones I'll be going to this year)! I love going to garage sales and finding more art supplies. I wonder what people think when I buy some of their "worthless" junk---I wish I could go back when I'm finished to show them what I do with their trash. : )



Embossing Metal

So  that's  what  I've  been  doing  this  week.  I've  put  it  on  another  mirror.   I  don't   know  what's  harder--getting  a  decent  photo  of  the  embossed  metal  or  trying  to  get  a  good  shot  of  a  mirror.   I  think,  the  metal  is  harder.   It's  like  the  camera  just  has  a  problem  with  the  reflective  shiny  metal--I  don't  know.   I  just  don't  like  how  these  photos  turned  out---it's  definitely   much  better  in  person!   So  what  I  did  was  make  small  pieces  like  I  usually  do  and  then  put  them all  together  on  the  mirror  frame.

These  are   probably  my  most  favorite  techniques  that  I  do  on  metal--stamp  and  paint  with  regular  acrylic  paint.   And  I  went  a  little  steampunk  style  with  the  combination  of  old  watch  parts  and  Tim  Holtz  embellishments--

And  using  my  Graphic  45  Steampunk  papers

I  also  like  using  the  paper  punches  on  the  metal--

...punch  just  like  paper!!  (arrggh!!  terrible  shot  of  this---but  I  was  tired  of  fighting  with  the  camera!)

And  the  finished  mirror--(with  some  wax  paper  to  get  rid  of  my  reflection  : )

....best  I   could  do--added  to  the  fact  that  our  days  have  been  very  dark  and  dreary  here.   If  I  waited  for  a  bright  day,  it  would  be  a  while  before  I  get  better  photos.   The  weather  for  the  rest  of  the  week  is  the  same  everyday--cloudy,  rainy  and  in  the  40's  to  50's---not  having  a  very  nice  Spring  this  year!

Love That Steampunk Part II--and.....I Won Another Giveaway!!

Between  the  Graphic  45  papers  and  all  of  my  finds  from  the  Highway  127  sale,  I've  gone  Steampunk  crazy!!   Like  for  instance,  this  was  a  drawer  from  a  sewing  machine  table  that  I  had  found  there,  but  not  anymore--

And  then  another  find  from  Tennessee--an  old  bottle  that  I  altered--

So  when  you  put  them  together--you  have  an  art  piece  to  hang  on  your  wall!!

I  can't  stop--I  keep  finding  things  that  I  want  to  Steampunk!!

I  really  enjoy  making  art  this  way--taking  the  old  and  discarded  (and  possibly  into  the  trash)  and  re-purposing  it.    The  best  part  is  no  matter  how  old  or  young   all  of  these  items  are--they  all have  a  history  to  them--I  like  that----except  for  these--

These  are  auto  bulbs--how  fun!  I  found  them  at  a  garage  sale  for  5  cents  each,  and  after  pricing  them  on  Etsy,  I  found  out  that  this  was  an   EXCELLENT  buy!!

But  I  really  must  stop!!  My  next  fair  is  in  less  than  2  weeks--Old  Fashioned  Christmas  in  the  Woods,  and  as  the  name  suggests,  it's  geared  toward  Christmas,  so  I  really  think  that  I should  be  making  some  Christmas  items,  which  I've  already  started  actually.   I  have  to  say  that  as  much  as  I  love  making  art,  I'm  wishing  I  could  have  a  little  free time  to  play  with  my  art--right  now  I  feel  more  like  I'm  producing  art  as  opposed  to  creating  it (don't  mind  me--I  go  through  this  every  year  at  this  time,  and  in  a  few  months,  I  miss it :)

So  what  did  I  win?   I  won  this!

Love That Steampunk!--A Mini Step-by-Step

I've  been  up  in  my  room  having  SOOOO  much  fun  with  my  Graphic  45  papers.  And  for  my  first  ever  Steampunk  piece  I  started  with  a  gallery  wrapped  canvas  flipped  over  to  make  a  shadowbox  (I  like  to  do  this  alot)

And  then  I  collaged  my  papers  on  it  along  with  a  vintage  lace  collar  that  I  coffee-stained  (once  I  start  coffee  staining   things, I  can't  stop--it's  so  fun!)

Okay,  and  then  I  took  an  alarm  clock  (actually  this  isn't  the  one  that  I  used--I  forgot  to  take  the  picture  of  the  one  that  I  did  use)

And  then......I  took  it  apart--do  you  know  how  much  fun  it  is  to  take  things  apart?!  Just  look  at  the  treasures  that  you  can  find  inside--

And  then  when  you  add   some  of  these  components  with  other  embellishments--you  can  get  some  very  fun  collage  going  on--

Who  would  have  thought  it--back  before  mixed  media  came  into  play!

Anyway--back  to  the  alarm  clock.  After  I  took  out  all  of  the  goodies  that  were  inside,  I  put  in  my  Debutante--

And  that  cherub---well  he  just  belongs  there!

And  here  is  my  first  completed  Steampunk  piece--

This  was  very  very  fun  to  put  together.

And   I  made  something  else  with  my  papers--what  else,  but  another  altered  cigar  box.

So  what  do  you  think  these  Victorians  would  think  of  what  we  do  with  them  today.  Like,  for  instance--look  at  this  proper  lady  with  her  sprocket  hair--

Oh  yeah,  and  that  screw  in  the  middle  of  her  forehead--couldn't  be  helped--this  is  the  inside  of  the lid  and  it's  where  I  attached  the knob--oh  well--it  just  adds  to  it.

Or  how  about  this  little  lady (or  is  it  a little  boy?)  with  his/her  wings  and  the  bird  on  top  of  his/her  head--

Do  you  think  they  would  have  been  fond  of  this?  I  don't  know--they  seemed  so  proper  and  rigid--whether  or  not--we're  having  fun  with  them  now.

Quite  honestly,  a  year  ago  I  never  even  heard  of  this  word,  but  then  when  I  started  blogging  and  visiting  some  of  these  blogs,  I  discovered  Steampunk.  I've  always  been  drawn  to  Victorian  art,  so I really  liked  this  style.  It's  more  of  a  whimsical  Victorian  art.  And  according  to  Scrapbook.com,  the term  Steampunk  refers  to  the  Victorian  era  in  Britain  in  the  19th  century  when  steam  power  was  widely  used.  So  this  is  the  reason  for the  muted  and  dirtied tones  of  the papers  with  the  tans,  greens, browns,  and the turquoise--along with the gadgets, sprockets, watches,  top-hats, gloves and so on.  I think  I  have  a  new  love (obsession  : )   Thank you  Graphic  45  for  coming  out  with  such  cool  papers!

A Few of My Favorite Things

When  I  was  reading  the  comments  from  my  giveaway  post (directly  below  this  one,  if  you  haven't  entered  your  name  yet),  Sue  from  Scribble-n-Paint  had  asked  me  to  post  photos  of  the  pitt  pens  and  neocolor  crayons  that  I  like  to  use.  So  I  decided  to  show  you  some  other  supplies  that  I  have  that  I  would  want  with  me  if  I  happened  to  be  deserted  on   an  island.   Keep  in  my  mind--these  are  my  favorites--but  there are  many  many  more  that  I  have  and  use.

So  I'll  start  with  the  pitt  pens  and  Caran d'Ache  neocolor  crayons--

I  also  want  to  mention  that  everything  that  I  show  you here,  I  purchased  from  Dick  Blick  online--they  really  do  have  the  best  prices--even  better  than  their  own  store.  I  compared  prices  when  I  was there,  and  it's  cheaper  to order  online  even  with  the shipping.   The  crayons  I  usually  order  individually--there  are SO  many  colors  to  choose  from,   and  they  come  in  the  soluble  and  non-soluble.  I  love  these.  When  you  combine  the  non-soluble  crayons  with   acrylics  you  get  such  a  cool  effect.

And  these  are  the  Faber-Castell  brush  tip  pitt pens--I'm  telling you--every  color  of  the  rainbow  and  then  some.  These  are  permanent  when  dry,  but  I  like  them  because  they'll   smudge with  your  finger  or wet  brush  when  you  first  apply them,  which  I  like.  I  don't  like  a  clean  line  when  I  outline--I  like  that  imperfect  look,  but  if  you  like  the clean  line,  then  they're  great  for  that  too.

These  are  the  prisma  pencils--I  have  to  admit  that  I  don't  use  these  that  much.  This  is  how  I  first  learned  to  color  faces  from  my  Suzi  Blu  class,  and  the  way  I  like  to  use  them  is  by using  many  LIGHT  layers of them, which   takes  time (something  that  I  don't  have  right  now),  but  I'm  planning  on  playing  with  them  when  I  DO  have  the  time.  And  also,  do  you  see that  brush  in  with  them?  Well  that's  a  Loew-Cornell scrub  brush.  I  found  it  in  the  fabric  paint  dept.  at  Michael's.  When  you  dry  brush  over  your  colored  pencil  art--it  gives   a  very  soft  effect  to  the  piece--try  it--you'll see what  I  mean.

The  one  thing  that  I've  had  a  problem  with  concerning  these  pencils,  is  that  I  can  never  get  them  sharp  enough  without  breaking  them--but  no  more--  thanks  to  Katherine  from  Sleep  and  Her  Sisters.  She  showed  this  sharpener  on  her  blog--

It  really  works!!  It  opens  in  the  middle,  and  it  has  a  universal  sharpener (big  and  small  hole)  on  the  bottom  part,  and  the  top  part  has  a  color  grip  sharpener,  and  that's  the  one  that  I  use  for  the prisma  pencils--works  like  a  charm!

And  here  are  my  absolute  favorite  paints--

I  know,  I  know--the  Golden  paints  are expensive-and  worth  every  penny.  You  really don't  need  a lot  of  colors   though--you  can  mix  them  to  make  your  own   unique  color  palette.  I  get  a  few  at  a  time,  because  they  last  forever.  The  fluid  acrylics  are  my  favorite.  And  of  course  there  are  the  metallic  paints  there  too--wonderful!

Some  of  the  mediums  that  I  like  to  use--

and  some  tools  other  than  paintbrushes--my  latest  discovery--the  woodless graphite  pencil  blended  with  a  paper stump--LOVE  it!!  I use an 8B pencil--it's very dark, almost like charcoal, but not as messy.

And  I  never  make  art  without  some  kind  of  paper  involved--anywhere  from  my  own  painted  papers,  handmade   speciality  papers,  ephemera,   old   book   pages  and  sheet  music,  and  without  a  doubt--scrapbook  paper.  This  is  my  latest  purchase  from  Scrapbook.com--Graphic  45  Steampunk  Debutante  paper pad--I  know  this  post  is  long,  but  I'm  so  excited  about  these  papers.  I'll   just  show  you  some  of  the  pages,  and  I'll  shut up.

And  they're  double--sided  too--just  to  add  to  the  confusion,  and  the  last  2  pages  have  these  die-cut  punch  out  tags  and  images--

These  are  all  so  gorgeous  I  don't  even  want  to  use  them--I  just  like  to  look  at  them...but  I  have  some  ideas  going  around  in  my  head..... 

So  sorry  this post  was  so long--but  when  I  get  going  about  art  supplies,  I  just  can't  stop.  So  you  might  want  to  think  twice  when  you  ask  me  to  show  you  something  ; )  (but  ask  anyway!!!)
