A Few of My Favorite Things

When  I  was  reading  the  comments  from  my  giveaway  post (directly  below  this  one,  if  you  haven't  entered  your  name  yet),  Sue  from  Scribble-n-Paint  had  asked  me  to  post  photos  of  the  pitt  pens  and  neocolor  crayons  that  I  like  to  use.  So  I  decided  to  show  you  some  other  supplies  that  I  have  that  I  would  want  with  me  if  I  happened  to  be  deserted  on   an  island.   Keep  in  my  mind--these  are  my  favorites--but  there are  many  many  more  that  I  have  and  use.

So  I'll  start  with  the  pitt  pens  and  Caran d'Ache  neocolor  crayons--

I  also  want  to  mention  that  everything  that  I  show  you here,  I  purchased  from  Dick  Blick  online--they  really  do  have  the  best  prices--even  better  than  their  own  store.  I  compared  prices  when  I  was there,  and  it's  cheaper  to order  online  even  with  the shipping.   The  crayons  I  usually  order  individually--there  are SO  many  colors  to  choose  from,   and  they  come  in  the  soluble  and  non-soluble.  I  love  these.  When  you  combine  the  non-soluble  crayons  with   acrylics  you  get  such  a  cool  effect.

And  these  are  the  Faber-Castell  brush  tip  pitt pens--I'm  telling you--every  color  of  the  rainbow  and  then  some.  These  are  permanent  when  dry,  but  I  like  them  because  they'll   smudge with  your  finger  or wet  brush  when  you  first  apply them,  which  I  like.  I  don't  like  a  clean  line  when  I  outline--I  like  that  imperfect  look,  but  if  you  like  the clean  line,  then  they're  great  for  that  too.

These  are  the  prisma  pencils--I  have  to  admit  that  I  don't  use  these  that  much.  This  is  how  I  first  learned  to  color  faces  from  my  Suzi  Blu  class,  and  the  way  I  like  to  use  them  is  by using  many  LIGHT  layers of them, which   takes  time (something  that  I  don't  have  right  now),  but  I'm  planning  on  playing  with  them  when  I  DO  have  the  time.  And  also,  do  you  see that  brush  in  with  them?  Well  that's  a  Loew-Cornell scrub  brush.  I  found  it  in  the  fabric  paint  dept.  at  Michael's.  When  you  dry  brush  over  your  colored  pencil  art--it  gives   a  very  soft  effect  to  the  piece--try  it--you'll see what  I  mean.

The  one  thing  that  I've  had  a  problem  with  concerning  these  pencils,  is  that  I  can  never  get  them  sharp  enough  without  breaking  them--but  no  more--  thanks  to  Katherine  from  Sleep  and  Her  Sisters.  She  showed  this  sharpener  on  her  blog--

It  really  works!!  It  opens  in  the  middle,  and  it  has  a  universal  sharpener (big  and  small  hole)  on  the  bottom  part,  and  the  top  part  has  a  color  grip  sharpener,  and  that's  the  one  that  I  use  for  the prisma  pencils--works  like  a  charm!

And  here  are  my  absolute  favorite  paints--

I  know,  I  know--the  Golden  paints  are expensive-and  worth  every  penny.  You  really don't  need  a lot  of  colors   though--you  can  mix  them  to  make  your  own   unique  color  palette.  I  get  a  few  at  a  time,  because  they  last  forever.  The  fluid  acrylics  are  my  favorite.  And  of  course  there  are  the  metallic  paints  there  too--wonderful!

Some  of  the  mediums  that  I  like  to  use--

and  some  tools  other  than  paintbrushes--my  latest  discovery--the  woodless graphite  pencil  blended  with  a  paper stump--LOVE  it!!  I use an 8B pencil--it's very dark, almost like charcoal, but not as messy.

And  I  never  make  art  without  some  kind  of  paper  involved--anywhere  from  my  own  painted  papers,  handmade   speciality  papers,  ephemera,   old   book   pages  and  sheet  music,  and  without  a  doubt--scrapbook  paper.  This  is  my  latest  purchase  from  Scrapbook.com--Graphic  45  Steampunk  Debutante  paper pad--I  know  this  post  is  long,  but  I'm  so  excited  about  these  papers.  I'll   just  show  you  some  of  the  pages,  and  I'll  shut up.

And  they're  double--sided  too--just  to  add  to  the  confusion,  and  the  last  2  pages  have  these  die-cut  punch  out  tags  and  images--

These  are  all  so  gorgeous  I  don't  even  want  to  use  them--I  just  like  to  look  at  them...but  I  have  some  ideas  going  around  in  my  head..... 

So  sorry  this post  was  so long--but  when  I  get  going  about  art  supplies,  I  just  can't  stop.  So  you  might  want  to  think  twice  when  you  ask  me  to  show  you  something  ; )  (but  ask  anyway!!!)

With One Palette Again

I'm  going  with  the  Somerset  inspiration--with  one  palette again.  And  this  time  the colors  are  black,  white and  red.  Now  I  have  to  admit,  I'm  more  of   a  brown,  cream,  and  tomato  red  kind  of  girl.  But  when  I  was  organizing  my  art  room  last  week,  I  found  this  scrapbook  paper  that  I  had  forgot  all about.

This  is  a  Christine  Adolph  design  by  Creative  Imaginations,  and  all  of  her  designs  are  gorgeous.  And  I  know  why  I  bought  this,, because  I  knew  exactly  what  I  was  going  to  do  with  it--

It  was  hard  to  stick  with these  colors,  but  in  the  end  I'm  glad  that  I  did,  because  I'm so  happy  with  the  way  that  she  ended  up.   Actually,  it's  kind  of  easy  when  you only  have  3  colors  to  choose  from.   Okay,  and  I  just  realized  that  I cheated  a  little  with  her  face.  I  used  my  Caran d'Ache  crayons  and  I  can't  even  remember  all  of   the  colors  that  I used.   Oh  yeah--I  forgot  about  the  green  leaves  too--I  guess it's  not  that  easy   : )

And  when  I  was  at  the  Dick  Blick  store,  I  picked  up  one  of  my  favorite  very  very  deep  wrapped  canvases  that  happened  to  be  12 x 12 (same  size  as  the  scrapbook  paper),  with  no  thought  of  what  I  was  going  to  do  with  it.  I  love  when  things  like  this  happen.

And  how  about  that  large  glass  knob  on  top--got  it  at  the  Columbus  wholesale  show  for  only  $1.75!

And  here's  another  find--this  one  was  from  the  Highway  127  sale--

Glass   knobs  for  the  feet--these  were  only  $1.00.  Now  if   any  of  you  have  checked  prices  for   glass  knobs  for  cupboard  doors,  then  you  know that  this  was  a  good  deal!  These cigar  boxes  are  my  favorite   types  of  boxes  to  make,  because  at  one  time  they  were  at  a  tobacco  store  and  some  cigar-smoking  man  or  possibly  a  lady,  who  prefers  cigars,  purchased  this  box  and  with  no  reason  saved  the  box.  Don't  you  wish  you could  show  these  smokers   what  us  guys  do  with  these  boxes!

Back From My Shopping Spree--A Little Poorer, but A Little More Organized....AND...another excellent giveaway that I want to tell you about!

I  have  to  say  that  I spent  alot  of  money  this weekend--way  too  much,  but  I  just  couldn't   resist--I was  finding lots  of  fun  things.  I  found  some  great  Christmas items  at  the  wholesale  show  for  collages.  When  I  do  the  Christmas  shows,  I mix  alot  of  craft  type items  with  my  mixed  media--but  I  DO  make  everything  that  I  offer  for  sale--I  don't  do  buy/sell--very  familiar  term  and  occurrence   in  the  art/craft  show  circuit.

And  my  first  stop  on  Friday  was  at  the  Dick Blick  store,  and  I  just  want  to  say--that  shopping  there  is    not  all   that  it's  cracked  up  to  be.   Now  before  you  start  screaming  at  me,  let  me  explain.  Okay,  the  first  reason  is  because  both  of  these  stores that  I've  been  to (Columbus  and  NYC)  were  huge,  and  very  overwhelming.   There's  so  much  to take in,  that  it's  almost  too  much--this  is  a  good  thing (if  you  have  an  unlimited  amount  of  money),  but it can   also be a  bad  thing (if  you  don't).   Another  reason is  --they  don't  have  everything  that's  in  their  catalog--I  know,  that's  really  not  a  big  deal.   But  the main  reason  is--their  prices  on   all  of  their  products  are  alot  higher  than  their  online  prices--I  figured  even  with  the  shipping,  I  save  more  when  I  shop  online.  I'm  not  talking  a  dollar  more--I'm  talking  anywhere  from  $3  to  $7.00 more!   But  on  the  up  side--you  can  see  the  actual  colors  of   all  the  paints (and  they pretty  much  have  all of  the  color selections  there too)  and  all  of  the  pens and  markers (you  can  test  them    too).   And  I  know  when  I  go  back  to  Columbus  next  year  or  where ever  there  is  a  Dick  Blick  store ,  that  will  be  the  first  place  I  go  to--I  still   love  going  there.

Okay,  now  on  to  IKEA.  I  was  able  to  find  some  shelving  units there  that  didn't  cost  me  an  arm  and  a leg,  and  I've  been  very  motivated  today  to get  it  put  together  with  the  help  of  my  very  patient  husband.  This  is  what  I  wanted  to  replace--an  old  set  of  shelves  from  my  son  that  he  was  going  to throw  out--it  was  on  it's  last  legs.

I   now  have  2  sets  of shelves that  hold  so much  more!  I  also  found  these baskets  at  IKEA  too--they're  great  for  organizing.  I  now  have  all  of  my paints  next  to  my  work  table,  and  also  my  scrapbook  paper pads  were  able  to  fit  in  there.  That's  my  next  goal--to  find  a  better  storage  system  for  all  of  my  many  many  more  loose  scrapbook  and  collage  papers  (other  side  of  the  room).   And  even  though  this  takes  up  basically  the whole  wall,  the  room  seems  bigger  to  me  now.  I'm  happy!!

This  is  one  of  my  newer  stamps.   I'm  pretty  sure  it's  a  Lynne  Perella  stamp--but  correct  me  if  I'm  wrong.   I  found  it  on  my  recent  trip to  New York  at  The Ink Pad--check  out  their  website--you  WILL  be  jealous!   I  was  told  about  this  cool  little  rubber  stamp  store  plus  from  Marlynn.  So  if  you're  ever  in  New York City,  make  sure  you  go--you  won't  be  disappointed.  Thanks  Marlynn!!

Off to Columbus

I'm   leaving  today  for  an  overnight  trip to  the  Columbus  wholesale  cash  and  carry  sale  that  I  told you  about  here,  and  again  my  first  stop  will  be  here--

The  wholesale  show  is  tomorrow,  and  then  after  that  we're  taking  a side  trip  over to  Pittsburgh  to  go  here--

Sorry,  this is the only  image  that I  could  come  up  with--trying  to  be  a  little  creative.  I  want  to look  for  small  storage  units  that  will  be  more  efficient  for  my  art  room  (better take  some  measurements  before  I  leave).  So  as  you  can  see--I'm  going  to have  some  fun  in  the  next  24  hours!

I  don't  have  any  art  to  show  you  right  now  because  I've  been  busy  working  on  a  project  that  I'm  very excited  about.  I'll show  it  to you  all  next  week.  But  for  now--here's  a  little  sneak  peak--

Back From Columbus

And on Friday, this was the first place I went to--the Blick art supply store.  This doesn't look like a lot, put it sure took a chunk of change out of my pocketbook. A couple of new products that I got were some copic markers (I've heard alot about these) and the Liquitex pouring medium. I found a video on where else, you tube, on the use of this  medium--really cool results--so we'll see.

And then today I went to the cash and carry wholesale show and picked up some goodies--

And I always get these frames when I go--

The one vendor there  sells  these barnwood framed prints--all different sizes--these were 12 x 16, and he always sells them to me without the prints.  He takes about $5.00 off the price, which makes them under $10.  I usually paint them and add my own painting, or I'll keep the glass in them and make a collage.  I really like them.

Can't you see this with vintage lace, and a vintage photo with some old jewelry and other embellishments?  I can.

The main reason I like to go to this show, however, is the furniture maker that's there.  He makes small tables and cabinets, but big pieces also, and his prices are extremely reasonable.  I like to paint furniture-I usually will find them at yard sales for under $10, but his are so well made and the price is too good to pass up.  Here's one piece that I just finished that's going with me next week--

This is an old magazine stand/table  that I'm sure I picked up for a couple of bucks--I have so much old furniture in our garage--forget about putting a car in there.  I love giving facelifts to these discarded pieces that would probably end up in the trash.

AND THEN...when we were finished--we were hungry, of course!! so we went here--

Schmidt's restaurant as featured on Travel Channel's -Man vs. Food, which is where we first found out about  it.  It's in the German District of Columbus.  What a quaint little neighborhood this is-- right down to the brick roads.

 

The Schmidt  family has been around making their own sausage since 1888. We had the buffet with all of their delicious sausage ( Bahama Mama--the favorite) and other side dishes including homemade sauerkraut. And also dessert--

One of their award- winning homemade creampuffs--very, very good!

So as you can see, I had a very fun last couple of days, and am now getting ready for my show.  Also happy Spring to everyone--it was great in Columbus--temperatures in the 60's and mostly sunny--I had short sleeves on and no jacket--wow!!
