March Art--Painting Faces and Mixed Media Art and Happy Spring!

 Happy Spring everyone!  Even though it's still a bit cold out and snowing right now (April 1), there are definitely signs of Spring in the air which makes me happy!  And looking forward to warmer weather and getting out more especially now that I am officially fully vaccinated.  Times are still definitely wierd but a little more hopeful than it was last time this year--little did we know that in a year's time we would still be basically staying close to home and wearing masks (kind of a way of life now).  Ok, but I'm here for the art which is my way of being content and less anxious.

So as the title says I've been painting fun faces--thanks to Lifebook2021  and Next Jeneration Art (Jenny Manno's Facebook group).  My first one here was from Maria Pace-Wynter's lesson in Lifebook--

I loved how she came out!  I was so happy that Maria was an instructor there this year--I love her art and so glad that she shared her talent with us.

Next 2 girls are inspired by Jenny Manno--

I love how Jenny shares how to use so many different mediums--the last girl here was done entirely in chalk pastels--so fun.  Remember she also has a You tube channel too, and each Tuesday she has a How To Tuesday video--it's great!

And another great lesson in Lifebook  from Susan Nethercote--

painting loose and free florals, which was a bit hard for me--I'm glad I tried it and trusted the process, because I had a hot mess going on for a while before the end result

Back to my Etsy shop-- for this month some mixed media art with lots of dimension and some assemblage--

I've also been playing with my painted papers--love how they come together to create a story--

So these last 2 were painted but I like to give the feel of the collaged papers--I love color as you can see  :-)

So, needless to say, I've been making lots of art.  I 'm always more content when I can spend every day in my art studio even if it's just for a short time--hope you can do this too everyday--whatever makes your heart sing!

October--All About Etsy

 So  in  October  I  was  able  to  participate  in  one  show,  which  has  always  been  my  favorite.   It's  outdoors  in  a  wooded  setting.   This  year,  of  course,  there  were  many  restrictions  due  to  the  pandemic,  and  I'm  happy  to  say  that  everyone  was  compliant--crafters  and  customers.  We  were  just  happy  to  be  out  and celebrate  Christmas  in  the  Woods (the name  of  the  show).  I  was  happy  to  see old  friends  and  make  new  ones  as  well.

I  actually  did  quite  well,  but  I  had  a  LOT,  considering  that  all  I  did  was  make  art  and  not  go  anywhere  for  most  of  the  year,  so  I  took  some  of  what  I  had  left  and  put  it  in  my  Etsy  shop.

Yes,  I  never  stop  making  art,  so  there  will be more  coming,  including  Christmas.   I  hope  this  holiday  season  that  you  all  can  help  support  small  businesses  that  are  having  a  tough  time  this  year.   Some  artist  friends  that  I  know  depend  mostly  on  art shows,  which  were  pretty  much  all canceled  this  year.   By  supporting  us  it  helps  us  continue  to  do  what  we  love  to  do  the  most.

May Brought Assemblage, Collage, and More Journaling

While  everything  here  is  very  slowly  opening  up, I'm  still  being  a  bit  of  a  hermit.  I've  ventured  out  a  bit ,  but just  a  bit.   Again,  I'm  so  happy  that  my  art  keeps  me  from  going  a  little  crazy.  So.....what  did  this  month  bring  for  me  creatively?

Well,  since  I  haven't  been  out  to  flea  markets  and  garage  sales,  I've  been  shopping  virtually  and  actually  finding  some  pretty  good  deals  especially  on  Ebay.  I  found  some  great  wood  cigar  boxes,  and  now  I have  more  than  I've  ever  had, so  I  decided  to  take  a  different  direction  with  them.

A  little  assemblage--

I  love  going  through  my  stash  and  making  stories

I  also  like  supporting  small  businesses  which  is  even  more  important now.  I  found  a  favorite  Etsy  shop--the name  of  the  shop  is  Hay Meadow Creek Crafts  where  they  make  plain  wood  shapes--lots  of  different  house  shapes,  which  is  what  I'm  looking  for.  The  2  houses  that  I  used  in  my cigar boxes  was  from  their  shop.

The  pieces  are  all  sanded  and  ready  to go!

I've  also  been  recycling  my  old  art  images  and  making  collages  out  of  them--

The  face  is  a  sketch  I  made  and  I  then  printed  it  out  on  a  dictionary  page,  and  the  sunflowers  are  from  a  painting  I  made  a  few years  ago.

And  back  to  my  journal--I  had  lots  of  fun--

I  liked  these  so  much,  I  just  couldn't  shut  them  up  in  a  journal,  so  I  put  them  on  8 x 10  wood  cradle  boards--

So,  basically  I've  been  doing  the  same  that  I  have  been  doing  for  the  last  few  months,  but  now  that  Summer  is  coming,  we  might  take  a  few  day  trips  cautiously--we'll  have  to  see.

Another Mini Step by Step Tutorial

This  one  is  pretty  much  the  same  as  my  last  piece,  but  it  involves  a  little  assemblage  this  time.

I  started  out  the  same  way  as  before  (from  my  previous  post)  with  a  6 x 12  wood  cradle  board--

...collaged  book  pages  and  color  over  top  of  it,  and  then--

I  added  a  border  with  my  papers--love  how  they  come  together..

next--

I  went  through  my  stash  of  old  hardware--I  have  so  much  of  this  stuff--I'm  a  bit  obsessed  with  it--I  love  looking  at  the  different  designs  and  detail--always  different--so  back  to  what  I  did  with  these--

....first--I  painted  all  the  pieces  with  regular  acrylic  paint ( to whimsy them up a bit)-- then  sprayed  a  finish  over  them.

Always  love  the  possibilities  of  these little  goodies  that  I  find.

 

..what  they  can  become...

That  was  fun!--so  you  know  I  just  had  to  do  it  again!

When  I  make  these,  I  always  gather  my  papers  that  I  want  to  use  first,  and  the  papers  give  me  a  sense  of  where  I  want  to  go,  and  that's  how  this  angel  came  about.

New Collage--Start to Finish

I  had  so  much  fun  making  my  latest  piece  of  art--I  just  wanted  to  show  you  all the process  of  it--first  starting  with  my  'supplies'--

...a  6 x 12  cradle  board,  this  very  cool  doorplate--I  think  they  might  call it  a  pocket  doorplate--whatever  the  technical  name  for  it  is--I  really  like  it.    And  this  very  old  Arithmetic  book--you  know  it's  old--they  don't  even  call  it  arithmetic  anymore.

And  more  supplies...

..whatever  I  found  lying  around  went  into  this  pile  (just  a  fraction  of  what  I  have)

So  the  first  thing  I  did  was  collage  pages  from  the  book  onto  the  cradle  board--

Next,  I  took  most  of  those  trinkets  above  and  adhered  them  to  the  frame  of  the  board, using heavy  gel  medium--

 

This  next  part  is  inspired  by  Anna  Dabrowska  aka  Finnabair  I  first  discovered  her  when  she  was  in  Somerset  Studio  last  year,  and  since  then  I've  seen  her  tutorials  on  her  you  tube  channel.   Her  art  is  wonderful!--such  an inspiration,  and  love  that  she  shares  her  process.

Here's  what  happens  next  with  all  of  these  little  trinkets--

I  Love  doing  this--very  theraputic.  

When  this  was  all dry,  is  when  I  added  my  assemblage  inside  of  it--

I  used  the  cover  of  the  book  for  the  backdrop--love  these  old  books.   

And  the  finished  piece--

I  really  enjoyed  the  process  of  this,  from  gathering  all  of  my  supplies  to  putting  all  the  pieces  together--like  working  with  a  puzzle.

And  so  grateful  for  awesome  artists  out  there   like  Finnabair  for  such  wonderful  inspiration!

Playing With Painted Papers

One  of  the  ways  I  like  to  relax  is  to  get  out  my  paint  and  other art  supplies,  and  just  play  around  on  paper--just  for  the  sake  of  it.  I  know  in  my  mind  that  I'm  doing  it  for  a  reason,  but  in  the  moment--I'm  just  playing.   It's  my  way  of  journaling,  and  I  know  that  these  papers  will  not  go  to  waste---as  all  mixed  media  artists  know---nothing  goes  to  waste.

 

 

 

And  while  I  was  in  the  middle  of  painting  these--I  had  a  delivery  from  Stencil Girl--perfect  timing!

 

 

I  just  love  what  you  can  achieve  with  stencils--layered  or  all  by  themselves.   The  paper  on  the  left  I  made  using  just  one  stencil  from  Stencil  Girl  designed  by  Carolyn  Dube--I  know  this  stencil  will  be  going  into  my  'favorite  stencil  pile'!

So  here's  what  I  did  with  my  papers......I  started  out  with  an  8 x8 wood  cradle  board  (with  nice  deep  edges)  and  cut  out  pieces  of  my  papers  and  arranged  them  until  I  liked  the  results  and  then  got  out  my  gel  medium--

....added  a  little  paint  and  stamping,  but  I  knew  I  wanted  more,  so  I  started  looking  through  my  vast  array  of  flea  market  finds--hardware  in  this  case--

 

I  usually  like  the  rusty/patina  look  of  vintage hardware,  but  I  wanted  to  give  them  a  whimsy  look  to  go  with  the  piece,  so  I  just  got  out  my  acrylic  paints  and  there  you go!

 

 

 

What  I  did  next  was  take  another  8 x 8  cradle  board  and  flipped  it  over  to  make  a  shadowbox--

 

 

 

.....using  more  flea  market  finds--a  little  fairy  doll--love  this  porcelain  doll  that  I  found  earlier  this  summer.  Here  she  is  in  her  finished  home--

 

 

 

....again  using  my  papers  for  the  background  of  the  piece--along  with  a  washi  tape  border--gotta  love  that  washi  tape!

Okay,  next  I  decided  to  collage  on  a  plain  wood  mirror  frame  (love  making  the  functional  art  pieces)

 

--with  more  flea  market  finds  for  embellishments....

 

 

 

...loved  how  this  turned  out!

 

So  these  3  pieces  were  all  made  with  collaged  papers--

 

 

But  what  makes  them  more  unique  is  that  they were  all  made  with  my  hand-painted  papers--kind  of  like  painting  with  paper.   This  is  such  a  fun  technique,  and  you  can  never  have  a  'bad'  painted  paper--when  cut  up,  they  always  come  together  nicely........and  any  kind  of  paper  will  do  for  painting  too--try  it!!
