Button Town

So continuing on through Button Town--we're now in a more upscale neighborhood, and this home deserved to be on a 24 x 16 canvas--

This neighborhood has tape measures that line the sidewalks--

And I found this ornamental tree there--

Look at this--It's a triptych!

So why are alot of us attracted to buttons--old and new?  Everytime I see them at a flea market or garage sale,  I grab them.  I have so many buttons--I think that if I laid them end to end, they'd end up in California.  Okay, I may be exagerating a bit, since I live in Pennsylvania.  But you know what I mean--I have alot of buttons.  I don't even use them that much either. I think it's because I'm fascinated with  their history.  Were they ever used before?  Did they come off of someones clothes?  And if they did, whose clothes were they on, and who would take the time to remove all of those buttons?  How old are they--where did they come from?  Oh, if only buttons could talk!

P.S. For those of you who didn't see it, you can still sign up for my giveaway.  I'll be picking the winner on May 26.  You can sign up here to win her--

I love buttons too. There's just something about them. My mother had a tin of them and I love them then. I should use buttons more. I think you described it just right---if only they could talk. This is a fabulous piece!!!!! I think Lee is our next American Idol, do you?

Well for sure if you lined up my buttons to meet yours we could definitely reach across the U.S. The funny thing is that I am very miserly with them when I try to decide which go on my art and might leave home if the piece should sell. lol. I just might like to live in "button town".

I certainly like the little shadow figures on these and actually the whole design of each. Clever and pretty. I can see they take some planning, you have a way with color and your colors always seem antique in your designs.

I came in to blog a bit, I am being held hostage in the garden.
I don't mind so much but I do love to paint. Also it is nice to have a clean house and not stuff here and there all the time.

Summer is like that and really we have to pause and love it.

Just love all the details in this piece.. your eye has so many places to play! When my grandmother died, the only thing i really wanted was her tin of buttons.. cut off of all her old clothes over the years.. There is just something sacred about it to me.. When I was a child I would play with it, dumping it out and finding matches.. what fun!

diane! you are on a creative roll! good for you! i've never collected buttons. but i see where you're coming from. i aspire to collect old valentines cards and post cards. these items have a tendency to make me sad also. do you ever find yourself saddened by a button? just a sad little button.........

I am drawn to buttons, too. You can always tell the new from the old.

This is a gorgeous and very colorful mixed media piece. I so love it. Of course, if it's got a bird on it, that makes it even more fun.

I've just stumbled onto your blog, and wanted to say how much I like your work! And I agree - buttons can be so interesting - if only they could talk... Then again, maybe it's a good thing they can't! I would hate to hear what my buttons would be saying..."I can't believe you washed me in hot water!" or "You sewed me back on with the wrong color thread!" anyway, I got a little offtrack, but just wanted to say your work is fantastic. Have a good day!

Fabulous artwork....with that special 'Diane-style'. The colours work beautifully.
I like altering buttons with paint and alcohol inks - is that sacrilegious ;-)

I think everyone has a thing for buttons. I know when we were kids if clothes were being chucked out mum would always take the buttons off first and it's something I continued with. I don't know if there was a button shortage in the war or what. I do know that they can be quite expensive to buy if you want something a little different.
