Get Inspired

 My  favorite  surface  to  work  on   these  days  is wood.   So  here  is  how all  of  my  latest  art  started  out--

The  long  tall  board  I  bought  at  Lowes --it  started  out  as  an  8ft.  board  and  I  had  my  husband  cut  it  in half  into  the  shape  of  a  house--so  now  I  have  2  house  shaped  boards--very  inexpensive.

So  the  first  thing  I  did  was  find  some  collage  papers  for  it.  I  didn't  paint  any papers this  time.  I  figured  it  was  time  to  use  some of  these thousands  of  scrapbook  papers,  book  pages, maps--you  name  it  that  I  have  been  gathering  all  of  these  years.

and  next  came  the  first  layer--

This  piece  resulted  from  a  class  that  I  took  last  year  at  the  art  retreat  that  I  taught at  also  from  Carrie  Tredo.---she's  a  very  talented  artist,  and  I'm  happy to  say  that  her  and  I  will be  teaching  again  this  September  in  Mayville,  NY  on  beautiful  Lake  Chautauqua  on  Sept.  5-7.  You  can  find  it's  facebook  HERE

This  is  on  an  8 x 8  deep  edged  cradle  board  inspired  by  Finnabair.  I  found  her  work  years  ago,  and  immediately  fell  in  love  with  this  dimensional  style  of  art-making.

All  of  this  resulted,  I  have  to  say,  from  trying  to  clean  out  my  art  space,  which  kind  of  failed  miserably,  but  not  really,  because  I  kept  finding  all  of  these  'supplies'  that  helped  bring  these pieces  together  and  gave  me  some  great  inspiration.  You  should  try  this  too--if  you  happen  to  be  in  a  slump--'clean'--it  has  its  benefits!

A New Tutorial For You--Using Your Paper Scraps

If  you  like  to  collage,  then  you  probably  have  bits  and  pieces  of  paper  that  you  can't  throw  out--any  kind--scrapbook,  book  pages,  hand  painted,  gelli  printed--ANY  kind.  In  my  case,  it's  most  likely  the  painted  kind.   When  I  get  a  build  up  like  this,  I'll  get  out  my  surface--whatever  is  on hand  and  my  gel  medium,  and  start  gluing  those  papers  down--cutting  and  gluing....

I  could  do this over  and  over--yes,  I  have  that  many  papers....

Playing With Painted Papers

One  of  the  ways  I  like  to  relax  is  to  get  out  my  paint  and  other art  supplies,  and  just  play  around  on  paper--just  for  the  sake  of  it.  I  know  in  my  mind  that  I'm  doing  it  for  a  reason,  but  in  the  moment--I'm  just  playing.   It's  my  way  of  journaling,  and  I  know  that  these  papers  will  not  go  to  waste---as  all  mixed  media  artists  know---nothing  goes  to  waste.

 

 

 

And  while  I  was  in  the  middle  of  painting  these--I  had  a  delivery  from  Stencil Girl--perfect  timing!

 

 

I  just  love  what  you  can  achieve  with  stencils--layered  or  all  by  themselves.   The  paper  on  the  left  I  made  using  just  one  stencil  from  Stencil  Girl  designed  by  Carolyn  Dube--I  know  this  stencil  will  be  going  into  my  'favorite  stencil  pile'!

So  here's  what  I  did  with  my  papers......I  started  out  with  an  8 x8 wood  cradle  board  (with  nice  deep  edges)  and  cut  out  pieces  of  my  papers  and  arranged  them  until  I  liked  the  results  and  then  got  out  my  gel  medium--

....added  a  little  paint  and  stamping,  but  I  knew  I  wanted  more,  so  I  started  looking  through  my  vast  array  of  flea  market  finds--hardware  in  this  case--

 

I  usually  like  the  rusty/patina  look  of  vintage hardware,  but  I  wanted  to  give  them  a  whimsy  look  to  go  with  the  piece,  so  I  just  got  out  my  acrylic  paints  and  there  you go!

 

 

 

What  I  did  next  was  take  another  8 x 8  cradle  board  and  flipped  it  over  to  make  a  shadowbox--

 

 

 

.....using  more  flea  market  finds--a  little  fairy  doll--love  this  porcelain  doll  that  I  found  earlier  this  summer.  Here  she  is  in  her  finished  home--

 

 

 

....again  using  my  papers  for  the  background  of  the  piece--along  with  a  washi  tape  border--gotta  love  that  washi  tape!

Okay,  next  I  decided  to  collage  on  a  plain  wood  mirror  frame  (love  making  the  functional  art  pieces)

 

--with  more  flea  market  finds  for  embellishments....

 

 

 

...loved  how  this  turned  out!

 

So  these  3  pieces  were  all  made  with  collaged  papers--

 

 

But  what  makes  them  more  unique  is  that  they were  all  made  with  my  hand-painted  papers--kind  of  like  painting  with  paper.   This  is  such  a  fun  technique,  and  you  can  never  have  a  'bad'  painted  paper--when  cut  up,  they  always  come  together  nicely........and  any  kind  of  paper  will  do  for  painting  too--try  it!!

Playing With My Other 'Art Supplies'

I  like  to  call  these  my  art  supplies--

 

 

Unlike  purchasing  from  an  art  store--I  purchase  these  from  garage  sales  and  flea  markets--most  of  these  items  would  most  likely  have  been  trashed  unless someone  else  found  them,  and  all  of  them  have  a  history  to  them--a  story  to  tell.

 

But  now they've  come  together  to  make  a  new  story--

....and  her  new  home  is  in  this  old  cheese  box--

 

 

 

I  couldn't  stop  with  my  art  supplies--I  altered  some  more  playing  cards  (see  my  last  post),  and  this  time  I  put  them on  some  wood  houses  and  even  a  little  tree--

Whatever  I  found  that  was  close  at  hand  went  into  this  Dream  box--pretty  much  how  I  dream.  I  think  whatever  is  floating  around  in  my  head  my  mind  grabs  and  puts  them  in  my  dreams,  and  sometimes  I  really  wonder  what's  going  on  in  my  head  because  I  can  have  some  pretty  strange  dreams!

 

So  this  weekend  is  my  first  show  of  the  year--the  Youngstown  Summer  Festival  of  the  Arts--it  seems  like  I've  been  getting  ready  for  years  for  my  art  shows  to  start  up  and  now  they're  finally  here--can't  wait  to  get  out  there  and  get  started!

A Storybook Circus

Wow!  It's  been  a  while  since  I  blogged---I've  been  busy!   We  had  such  a  good  time  at  Disney  and  boy  did  that  week  sure  go  fast.   Disney  World  is  such  a  wonderful  place,  and  apparently  about  a  million  other  people  think  the  same  thing, because  I  swear  that's  how  many  people  were  there!   But  in  spite  of  the  crowds--we  still  enjoyed  ourselves  and  the  wonderful  weather!   It  was  so  good  to  be  in  warmth  and  see  lots  of  sun--both  of  which   have  been  lacking  around  here  until  we  came  back.   I  think  we  brought  it  back  with  us,  because  it's  finally  starting  to  feel  like  Spring  around  here!!

 

So  when  I  was  at  Disney,  I  picked  up  a  'few'  souvenirs,  and  when  I  was  in  Fantasyland  mostly  for  children, (but  still  magical  for  everyone)  I  purchased  a  mug  from  their  new  Storybook  Circus  area.   Fantasyland  is  undergoing one  of  the  largest  renovations  in  Disney's  history--it's  just  awesome.   They  even  built  a  new  castle--the  Beast's  castle  from  Beauty  and  the  Beast.   

But  back  to  the  mug--coffee  in  it-- in  my  studio--

 

 

 

....and  that  bottle/lamp  thing  next  to  it  I  found  at  a  flea  market  in  Daytona--we  went  to  visit  our  son  who's  just  recently  moved  there,  and  we  saw  the  flea  market,  and  I  can't  pass  up  a  good  flea  market  no  matter  where  I  am.

I'm  actually  not  a  big  fan  of   going  to  the  Circus--but  I  Really  Really  enjoy  making circus  art!

 

I   have  to  thank  Disney  World  for  giving  me  this  spark  for  some  new  art--

 

 

 

It  was  nice  to  get  back  home  and  back  to  my  studio,  but  maybe  I  should  go  back  to  Disney  for  some  more  inspiration   ; )

Bottled Up

Still  playing  with  my  'stuff',  and  this  time  it's  bottles.

These  little  things  can  become  very  addictive--kind  of  like  ATC's.   It  doesn't  take  much  because  they're  so  small,  and  when  you  have  so  much  'fodder'  like  I  do,  the  possibilities  are  endless.    And  they're  all  inside  of  this  fun  shadowbox--

And  then  I  added  a  little  variation  with  this  next  one--I  threw  a  salt  (or  maybe  pepper?)  shaker  into  the  mix.

I  knew  when  I  saw  that  lone  salt  shaker  last  year  at  a  garage  sale  that  I  could  use  it  for  something.    It's  now  the  body  of  my  Frida-like  doll.    The  bottle  is  attached  to  it  underneath--I  covered  it  with  text  pages.    And  love  those  little  watch  part  vials  too.    And  I  put  her  in  another  garage  sale  find--a  wooden  cheese  box--

How  fun!

And  this  next  one  is  my  favorite--

No  bottles  in  this  one--this  time  I  got  out  my  stash  of  children's  blocks---and  believe  me--I  have  a  lot!   I  can  never  pass  these  things  up  when  I  see  them.  

And  look  at  these  fun  birds--

I  knew  that  I  wanted  to  put  birds  in  here,  but  I  wanted  a  little  something  different.   So  I  took  a  regular  craft  store  bird  and  covered  it  bits  and  pieces  of  dictionary  pages--

....just  the  look  that  I  was  looking  for.   You  can  use  any  kind  of  thin  paper  like  tissue  or  telephone  book  pages  also--it's  so  easy.

So  these  past  3  pieces  were  made  from  what  I  like  to  call  my  scavenger  hunt.   I  would  get  an  idea  in  my  head,  and  then  the  biggest  challenge  was  to  try  and   remember  where  I  had  everything.   It   was  actually  kind  of  fun,  because  I've  found  other  things  that  have  given  me  other  ideas  for  other  pieces--like  putting  a jigsaw  puzzle  together!
