Start to Finish

I  haven't  done  this  in  a  while--take  you  through  a  step  by  step  process  of  my  latest  piece.   I  have  a  little  more  time  now,  so  here  goes.........but  of  course  I  forgot  to  take  a  photo  of  the  cupboard  door  that  I  had  before  I  did  anything  to  it.   In  this  photo  it  already  has  a  primer  paint  on  it  or  you  could  just  use  gesso--

 

 

You  can  see  the  holes  where  the  handle  was.   I  decided  not  to  use  it,  but  I  will  eventually  in  another  project--I  love  the  old  hardware.

 

And  then  next  I  gathered  papers   that  I  wanted  to  use--

 

 

 

I  found  a  new  scrapbook  paper  love--Pink  Paislee--"London  Market"--they're  beautiful.   I  also  used  some  of  these  very  cool  digital  images  that  I  found  on  Etsy  (can't  remember  the  name  of  the  shop  though--but  if  you're  interested,  let  me  know,  and I'll  look  it  up)  She  has  a  ton  of  images  like  these  vintage  florals.   Also,  I  added  paint  to  the  'frame'  of  the  door.

 

So  next  came  the  first  layer--

 

 

 

---and  then  another  layer   and  lots  of  texture.     (BTW--you'll  have  to  excuse  these  photos.   I  have  a  room  in  my  house  with  great  natural  light  that  I  use  for  picture-taking,  but  'Sandy'  has  been  hanging  around  here,  and  it's  very  gloomy.)

 

So  after  the  final  layer  and adding  details,  came  the  embellishments--

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Love  this--and  it's  much  better  in  person--I  wish  I  had  better  light.   I  think  Sandy  has  left,  but  the  weather  is  still  rather  depressing.   Last  night  was the  worst--lots  of  wind  and  rain  (and  a  very  wet  basement!),  and  we  were  just  on  the  outskirts  of  the  storm!  

 

Tomorrow  is  still  not  looking  that  great  for  one  of  our  favorite  holidays,  but  it's  not  going  to  stop  us  from  enjoying  it.

Taking a Breath......

Wow!!   As  fast  as  my  big  show  came  up  on  me--it's  all  over  now.    What  an  awesome  show  this  was.   Two  weekends  ago  I  was  all  set  up  to  go.....

 

 

 

The  weather  was  beautiful,  and  the  crowds  came  in  full  force....

 

 

 

It  was  overwhelming  on  how  many  people  were  at  this  show!!   And  these  people  are  here  to  buy  and they  really  appreciate  handcrafted  items  and  art  as  well.    The  long  hours  of  getting  ready  for  this  event  were  well  worth  it.

 

I  was  pretty  depleted  by  the  time  the  first  weekend  was  over,  so  the  next  week  I  rushed  to  make  some  quick  art  by  recycling  my  old  pieces...

 

 

 

Even  though  these  are  prints  of  mine,  I  was  able  to  give  them  a  fresh  new  look.   So  I  was  able  to  fill   the  walls  of  my  booth  again  along  with  my  Christmas  florals.

 

I  did  make  a  point  of  making  one  new  piece  for  the  next  weekend  though....

 

 

 

This  was  a  fairly  large  piece,  and  I  finished  it  up  on  the  Thursday  before  I  had  to  leave  again.   Usually  these  pieces  take  a  while  to  sell,  but  not  at  this  show--less  than  48  hours  from  when  I  had  finished it--it  sold!   Yeah--that's  how  good  this  show  is.

 

And  remember  all  of  my whimsy  houses  from  my  last  3  posts?--all  sold  but  one!   I'm  telling  you--this  show  is  awesome!    So  the  piece  that  didn't  find  a  home  is  now  in  my  Etsy  shop--

 

 

I  feel  bad  that  this  little  birdie  didn't  find  a  home---so  if  anyone  wants  to  give  him  one,  you  can  find  him  HERE.

 

And  did  I  mention  how  delicious  the  food  was  there??   I  had  a  steady  diet  of  the  deep  fried  pickles  there--absolutely  delicious!!

 

I  was  sad  to  say  goodbye  to  this  place  :- (

 

 

......until  next  year...

 

So  now  I'm  taking  a  little  breather,  but  just  a  little  one,  because  I  have  one  more  show  at  the  end  of  November,  and  I'm  starting  to  work  on  some  new  art...

 

 

....but  now  I'm  able  to  enjoy  the  process  a  bit.....

My Whimsy Houses III (with help from Graphic 45)

I  LOVE   making  these  houses!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And  I  have  to  give  credit  to  Graphic  45's  latest  papers--"A  Ladies  Diary"--

 

 

 

They've  outdone  themselves--these  papers  are  gorgeous!  And  I  used  this  vintage  book for  the text  faces  of  my  angels--I  thought  it  was  fitting  for  the  papers. 

 

So....I  didn't  stop  with  the  houses--I  kept  going--with  a  mirror--

 

 

 

....and  a  box...

 

 

 

...wonderful  vintage  feel  to  these  papers--and  they're  all  going  with  me  tomorrow.   I've  been  whipping  these  things  out  so  fast----I  guess  I  work  well  under  pressure.   This  is  my  biggest  show  of  the  year,  and   I  love  it!!  The  weather's  looking  okay,  but  at  this  show,  it  really  doesn't  matter--it's  a  good  one!!

 

My Whimsy Houses II

I  had  so  much  fun  making  my  houses  last  week----no  wait----that  was  2  weeks  ago--where  does  the  time  go??  I've  been  so  busy,  that  I've  had  to  put  blogging  on  the  back  burner.   

 

.....back  to  what  I  was  saying---I  had  fun  with  my  first  set  of  houses--and  they've  already  sold--they  were  a  big  hit  at  my  show.....so  I  had  to  make  some  more  for  my  next  big  show,  and  Most  favorite  of  the  whole  year--Christmas  in  the  Woods.   Every  year  I  talk  about  this  show--it's  in  the  woods--all  decked  out  for  Christmas.    We're  in  our  wooden  booths  in  our  colonial  attire--it's  just  a  wonderful  time  all  around--great  food,  fun  music,  and  lots  and  lots  of  shoppers  looking  for  those  Christmas  gifts--yes  Christmas  already.

 

So  I'm  setting  the  mood  for  Winter  with  my  houses--

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Love  them  all!!

 

I  don't  like  rushing  the  seasons  like  this,  but  it's  kind  of  expected  with  this  show--and  when  you're  there,  it  can  be  80  degrees  out  (which  in  some  years,  it  has  been)--but  it  still  feels   like  the  Winter  season  and  Christmas  is  right  around  the  corner.    It's  just  a  fun  2  weekend  getaway.

 

And  then,  when  the  show  is  over  in  3  weeks  from  now,  I'll  come  home  to  real  time,  and  enjoy  another  favorite  time  of  mine---Halloween!!

 

 

My Whimsy Houses

I've  been  Super  Busy  these last  couple  of  weeks  with  my  art  show.   It's  going  into  it's  3  weekend--wow!  that  went  fast--it  takes  months  to  get  ready  for  these  types  of  shows,  and  before  you  know  it,  it's  almost  over.  I'll  be  sad  to  see  this  weekend  come  to  an  end--it's  such  a  fun  show,  and  it's  been  good  to  me--almost  too  good.   I'm  running  out  of  art,  and  this  is  when  I  get  a  little  nervous.   So  I've  been  making  lots,  and  this  week  I  got  an  idea.  My  husband  had  these  pieces  of  wood  in  the  garage,  and  asked  if  I  wanted  to  use  them,  and  of  course  I  said  yes,  but  I  had  him  cut  them  into  house  shapes....

 

 

 

...and  then  I  started  to  get  my  ideas...

 

 

 

.....and  one  idea  always  leads  to  another....

 

 

 

 

 

...a  very  fun  way  to  use  up  those  old  wood  pieces  that  you  have (or  even  the  new  ones).

 

 

 

I'll  be  taking  these  with  me  this  weekend--maybe  they'll  find  their  home,  but  it  won't  bother  me  if  they  don't--I  like  looking  at  them--they  inspire  me  to  make  even  more!

 

And  this  is  such  a  fun  and  unique  show--for  instance--a  sight  in  the  field  right  across  from  my  booth....

 

 

 

They  inflate  it  each  day  of  the  festival  at  5:00  sharp,  and  then  someone  gets  to  go  for  a  ride--very  fun!

 

Some New Art Before I Leave

I'm  as  ready  as  I'll ever  be  for  these  next  3  weekends  (I guess).   I'm  leaving  today  with art  that  I've  been  making  for  these  last  couple  of  months,  and  was  able  to  squeeze  some  more  in  this  week....

And  I  checked  the  weather,  like  I've  been  doing   for  the  last  2  weeks,  and  tomorrow's  weather  looks  horrible--thunderstorms  and  wind--can't  get  any  better  than  that.   Maybe  the  forecast  will change,  like  it  does  everyday  when  I  check  it.   Oh  well--comes  with  the  territory.   I  hope  to  take  some  pics  when  I'm  there--it's  a  really  fun  festival,  and  here's  the  website:  http://www.yankeepeddlerfestival.com

Painting Furniture Again

I  haven't  done  this  in  a  while,  and  I  wanted  to  take  some  with  me  for  my  show  next  week,  so  I  started  digging  around  in  my  garage  to  see  what  I  could  find  ( I  have  no  idea  what's  in  there---I  forget  what  I  get  the  minute  I  put  it  in  there).

 

So  here's  what  I  came  up  with--this  folding  chair--

 

 

Actually,  this  isn't  the  chair  that  I  painted--I  forgot  to  get  a  before  shot  of  the  real one,  but  this  one  is  very  similar  with  its  looks  and  condition  of  the  one  that  I  did  paint.   I  painted  a  layer  of  cream  acrylic  wash  over  it,  and  then  put  down  my  "background"--just  like  a  canvas--

 

 

....and  then  finished  it  with  these  poppies--

 

 

This  is  the  first  time  that  I've  painted  poppies,  but  it  won't  be  the  last--I  really  enjoyed  painting   them,  and  I  love  how  the  red  just  pops.

 

And  the  next  piece  was  this  little  half  table--

 

 

It  already  had  the  black  bottom  on  it--so  I  kept  that  and  just  did  the  top--

 

 

This  time  I  collaged  on  some  vintage  pages  with  a  cream  color  wash  over  it  (just  like  a  canvas).  As  long  as  you  seal  the  furniture  with  protective  coats  of  varnish,  you  can  pretty  much  do  what  you  would  do  on  any  other  substrate. 

 

So  I  had  so  much  fun  painting  those  poppies--I  decided  to  do  them  again--

 

 

...love  those  poppies! 

 

I've  said  this  before--don't  get  rid  of  those  old  furniture  pieces--instead  play  around  with  them  and  see  what  you  can  come  up  with--if anything--it's  a  great  way  to  try  new  things.

 

And  one  more  thing--I  forgot  to  post  this  pic  last  time.   A  couple  of  weeks  ago  was  Zoie's  christening,  and  she  was  such  a  good  little  baby--

 

 

 

But  then,  she's  always  good,  and  she's  growing  like  crazy--it's  hard  to  believe  that  she'll  be  5  months  old  next  week  already......and  boy,  she  sure  does  love  those  fingers!
