Some New Art--She Art Style

I've  made  a  new  girl  here--what  I  like  to  call  my Christy  Tomlinson  she  art  girl   with  help  from   Julie  Nutting.    Christy's  was  one  of  my  favorite  classes  and she's  so  generous  in sharing  different  techniques,  and  Julie's  book  Collage  Couture  is  one  of  my  favorite  art  books--also  lots  of  great  techniques  and ideas.   So  I  combined  what  I  learned  from  both  of  them  to  make  my  own  version--

She  is  actually  on  a  cupboard  door--

....a  very  LARGE  cupboard  door--it's hard  to  get  a  good  photo  of  the  whole  thing

I   love  adding  all  of  the  little  details  and  embellies  as  much  as  I  like  creating  it.....

I  like  mixing  the  old  and  the  new  and  whatever  I  may  find.   When  I  make  these  girls--they  always  will  help  me  put  their  story  together,   so  I  just  go  on  my  little  scavenger  hunt  around  my  house  to  find  those  just-right  additions..... 

A New Face and A New Class!

And  no  paint  was  used  in  the  making  of  this  face  (or  hair  for  that  matter)--

I  used  my  Conte'  crayons  that  I  got  a  while  back  after  reading  about  these  on  people's  blogs.   They  were  highly  recommended,  so  naturally   I  had  to  get  them.   So  I  really  didn't  read  the  info  about  them  entirely  and  I  just  assumed  that  they  were  a  different  kind  of  crayon--silly  me.  They're  actually  pastels,  but  alot  harder,  so  not  as  much  dust,  and they  blend  beautifully.   And  if  you  want  to  take  some  off,  they  just  erase  with  a  kneaded  eraser.  So  you  definitely  have  to  spray  a  fixative  on  them  when  you're  finished.   I  also  used  some  of  my  colored  pitt  pens  for  color.  I  like  to  wet  them  with  the  paintbrush  for  a  watercolor  effect.

I  added some  of  my  style  with  the  crackle  paint  and  lace--

And  I  also  applied  some  of  the  techniques  that  I  learned  from  Christy's  She-art  class  on  the  sides  of  the  canvas--

All   on  a  6 x 18  canvas  from  Dick  Blick  (love  these)

And  see  those  butterflies?  I  used  my  new  Martha  Stewart  All  Over  the  Page  Punch--

This  is  the  neatest  little  gadget--punch  anywhere  you  want  on  the  page,  and  the  best  part--you  can  see exactly  where  you're  punching  when  you  flip  it  and  the  paper   upside  down.--so  if  you  wanted  to  make  a  pattern  on  your  paper  for  collage  or  as  a  stencil,  you  could!

And  I'm  very  excited  about  my  new  online  class  with  Jane  DesRosier,  better  known  as  Grittyjane--Portraits  and  Papers.   Jane  is  the  very  first  artist  that  I  found  on  the  internet  when  I  was  just  starting  with  mixed  media--way  before  I  ever  even  thought  of  having  a  blog.   I  think  I  actually  found  her  on  Ebay  first.   And  through  these  last  few  years,  her  art  has  evolved so   much.   I  didn't  think  she  could  possibly  get  any  better,  but  she  has--she  is  truly  an  inspiring  artist  and  a  very  sweet  lady.   And  she's  offering  what  she's  learned  by  teaching  portrait  skills  mixed  with  her  very  unique  collage  work.   I  think  the  art  that  she's  coming  out  with  right  now  is  my  favorite  so  far.  The  price  is  very  fair  too.   If  this  interests  you,  go  check  out   her  class --if  anything,  check  out   her  art--amazing!!

Having Some Fun and YES---Another Great Giveaway to Share

So  today  is  Saturday,  April 2,  but  as  I'm  writing  this  part  right  now,  it's  early  Friday  morning,  April 1.   I'm  at  my  kitchen  table  with  the  girls   enjoying  my  cup  of  Peet's  coffee.  And  I'm  looking  out  of  my  picture  window  and  admiring  the  beautiful  white  carpet on  the  ground  from  the  big  fluffy  snowflakes  that  are  falling  down--Ahhh--Spring--what  a  beautiful  Season!!

Okay.....whatever....on  to  the  blog  post--

I've  put  the  She-art  on  hold  for  a  while  and  decided  to  do  some  Diane-art

Diane-art  is  a  lot  different  than    She-art.   It's  all  about  different  shapes  and  patterns  and  a  pretty  much  planned  design.   It's  definitely  more  time  consuming,  but  once  I  figure  out  what  I'm  going  to do,  I  really  enjoy  the  process.    And  this  is  on  a  16 x 20  canvas.  I  haven't  worked  on  this  size  in  a  while--these  larger  sizes  always   intimidate  me  a  bit.

I  used  some  of  my  painted  papers,  some  speciality  papers  from  paperarts.com, and  also  artists'  papers  from  Somerset  Studio (I  finally  broke  down  and  bought  a  subscription, and  they  sent  me  a  pack  of  their  papers).   And  I  even   used  some   corrugated  cardboard  that  I  just  painted--I  love  this  stuff  to  use  as  a  collage  element.

And   Diane-art  usually   will  have  mirrored  designs  on  all  sides (but  not  always)

So,  what  does  this  say  about  my  personality?   I  guess  it  means  that  I  like  to  have  a  plan---don't  like  surprises.    And  this  is  why  I  probably  enjoyed  Christy's  class so  much--very  spontaneous--no  perfection--whatever  ends  up  on  the  canvas  is  the  way  it  was  meant  to  be--I'm  hoping  it  will  help  me  from  over-thinking  everything.

And  as  long  as  I'm  talking  about  She-art,  these  girls  are  certainly  the  ladies  of  the  hour--their  popping  up  everywhere  in  Blogland,  but  they  had  to  take  a  break  and  wash  those  pretty  clothes  we've  been  seeing  them  in.

Sooner  or  later--everyone  has  to  do  their  laundry.  But  don't  worry,  they'll  be  popping  up  again--if  not  here,  then  somewhere  in  Blogland.

So    I'm  finishing  my  post,  and  it's  now  early  Saturday  afternoon.   The  snow  is  gone,  the  sun  is  out,  and  it's  a  nice  'warm'  temperature  of  40 degrees.   NOW.....were  talkin  Spring!!

I'm Trying Very Hard to Think Spring!

I  really  am,  but when  you  have  temps  in  the  20's,  it's  kind  of  hard.  Tomorrow  looks  like  a  warm  up--sunny  and  in  the  mid  30's--time  to  break  out  the  bermuda  shorts!   Well,  at  least  I  can  think  Spring  with  my  she  art  girls--

I  haven't  altered  a  birdhouse  in  a  long  time.  They're  fun  to  do--each  side  is  like  a  new  canvas  to  work  on--completely  separate  from  the  other  side--

So.....what else can I do with these girls?...Hmmmmm...

I  had  to  do  it  : )

You  know,   I  wasn't  even  going  to  sign  up  for  this  class--I  did  it  on  a  whim,  but  now  I'm  so  glad  that  I  did,  and  I've  become  a  big  Christy  fan  (check  out   the  very  excellent  giveaway  that  she  has  going  on  right  now  with  Pink  Paislee  papers)   And  guess what??   She's  offering  a  new  class  in  May--She  Had  Three  Hearts--Art  Journaling  Workshop.   I've  already  signed  up  for  it.  It  doesn't  matter  what  the  class is,  I  know  I'll  like  it,  but  it  sounds  great,  and  her  price  for  the  class  is  impossible  to  turn  down--go  check  it  out!

A She Art Re-mix

Reading  my  blog,  you  all  know  that  I  like  to  recycle  my  art.   And  that's  exactly  what  I  did  with  my  she  art  girls.   I  took  these  images--

on  this  mirror!   This  really  is  a mirror.  I  just  covered  up  the  mirror  part--you  wouldn't  want  to  see  my  reflection   when  I  took  this  photo--not  a  pretty  sight   : )

And  since  it's  a  mirror,  I   want  to  remind  anyone  who  looks  into  it--these  daily  thoughts  to  remember--

 

And  when  I  think  of  it,  this  was  a  great  piece  to  make  to  go  with  Christy's  last  lesson.   The  lesson  is  all  about  making  it  personal  by  using  copies  of  personal  letters,  your  children's  artwork,  old  ticket  stubs,  cards  you  received,  etc.    So  wouldn't  this  be  great  as  a  picture  frame  with  your  personal  memorabilia  on  it  and  then  adding  a  family  photo?  Or  how  about  copies  of  brochures,  receipts--you  know  things  that  you  collect  on  a  vacation  that  you've  taken,  like  for  instance --New  York  City  ; )

You  get  the  point--I  think  that  this  type  of  art  is  great  when  it's  personalized.

My Classes and a Bob Update

Can  I  tell  you  how  glad  I  am  that  I  signed  up  for  Christy  Tomlinson's  She  Art  Class!    The  first  week  was  jammed  pack!!   And  she  starts  with  very  basic  designs  for  the  girls--she  shows  3  examples,  and  one  of  them  is  an  angel  which  immediately  appealed to me.  So  I  decided  to  make  some  She  Art  garden angels--

I  love  her  energy  and  enthusiasm,  and  she's  very  organic  with  her  designs,  which,  for  the  most  part,  I'm  not.    But  her  technique  of  creating  rubbed  off  on  me,  and  I  just  worked  along  with  her,  and  I  love  the  way  these  girls  turned  out  in  such  a  short  amount  of  time.   All  of  the  layers--

I  highly  recommend  this  class--although  registration  is  now  closed,  I'm  pretty  sure  I  read  that  you  can  sign  up  again  in  April--I  can't  wait  to  see  this  week's  lesson!

And  my  other  class  with  Alisa  Burke,  I'm  also  enjoying--Sketchbook  Delight.  I've  just  watched  the  first  2  weeks  of  the  class,  and  I  have  to  say  that  I'm  not  the  world's  best  sketcher,  but  I  do  enjoy  it.   And  in  these  lessons  she  gives  us  permission  not  to  be  perfect--I  know  that  sounds  silly,  but  you  when  you  hear  someone tell you  this,  it  makes  you  feel  good  about  sketching  no  matter  what  your  sketches  look  like.

And  she  tells  us  to  draw  what  we  like  to  draw  and  what  appeals  to  us.   Well,  I  like  to  draw  faces  and  collect  them  as  well--so  that  was  the  natural  choice--

This  was  so  relaxing  to  me.   She  encourages  us  to  fill  up  the  page,  which  is  never  a  problem  with  me--this  is  what  I  like  to  do  anyway.   And  these  pages  are  done  mostly  with  colored  brush  tip  pitt  pens  and  outlined  with  micron  pen (one  of  my  new  loves).  Her  choice  is  watercolors,  which  I'm  planning  on  trying  (she  has  some  great  tips  with  watercolors).  I've  never  used  watercolors,  but  have  always  wanted  to-so  now  will  be  the  time.

And  speaking  of  Alisa,  not  only  does  she  have  some  great  art  tips,  I  also  found  a  very  quick  recipe  on  her  blog.

These  tiny  red  potatoes  are  so  darn  good.  I  actually  ate  them  as  my  main  course.  In  her  recipe  she  also  added  pearl  onions,  and  a  variety  of  fresh  herbs.   I  didn't  have  the  onions  and  all  I  had  was  the  fresh  parsley--still---DELICIOUS--and  the  fastest  dish  you  could  prepare.  I  don't  like  to  cook  either.  You  can  find  her  delicious  recipe  HERE.

Okay,  and  more  thing--Bob.  His  Mom  and  Dad  were  in  a  wedding  yesterday,  and  apparently  it  must  have  been  an  adult  only  wedding,  because  Bob  couldn't  go,  and  they  didn't  want  to  leave  him  alone  just  yet.   So  I  had  a  visitor  yesterday--

He  looks  a  bit  worried,  doesn't  he?   He  kind  of  was once  his  parents  weren't  there,  but  then  he  settled  in  fine  and  made  himself  at  home.   As  you  can  see,  his  leg  is  just  about  healed.  But  he  kept  going  up  and  down  our  stairs,  and  by  the  end  of  the  day,  he  was  having  trouble  keeping  his  leg  on  the  ground--it  was  probably  a  little  sore--poor  thing.   Monday  will  be  the  first  time  in  2  weeks  that  he'll  be  left  alone.  I  think  they're  going  to  have  a  whole  new  set  of  problems!!

Etsy--A Giveaway--New Classes

Okay,  first  on  the  list--new  Etsy  listings.  I  inspired  myself  to  make  another  piece  like  the  ones  that  I  made  for  OWOH, but  instead  of  using  my  painted  papers,  I had  this  scrapbook  pack  from  Cosmo  Cricket  that  I wanted  to  use.   I  really  like  the  vintage  feel  of  them  with  the  patterns  and  most  definitely,  the  colors--

This  time  I  made  it  on  a  6 x 6  very  deep  wrapped  canvas  (almost  like  a  box).  I  really  love  using  these,  and  I  can  only  find  them  at  Dick  Blick.

I  never  never  know  where  these  are  going  to  take  me,  but  I  had  this  old  cloth  tape  measure,  and  the  buttons   just  naturally  followed--
