The title pretty much says it all--no real need for words.....

Zoie!   She  was  1 week  old  yesterday,  and  she  is  very  content  in  her  world,  which  makes  us  all  very  happy  here!!

Easter Blessings

I'm  wishing  everyone  a  very  happy  and  blessed  Easter  weekend---I  know  that  we  certainly  will  be  having  one  with  our  new  Granddaughter!!

 

....my  son  Scott  with  his  girlfriend  Beth  (better  known  as  Mom  and  Dad)  with  their  new  daughter  Zofia  Rayn  (better  known  as  Zoie)  born  on  April  4.

We're  all  very  excited  here--I  can't  tell you  how  much!

And.....

....she's  perfect!

Playing With Prompts and Plaster (and a Giveaway to Share)

Kind  of  a  weird  title,  but  that's  just  what  I've  been  doing.   I  have  so  much  stash  here,  and  sometimes  when  I'm  looking  for  something,  I  get  side-tracked  and  find  something  else,  which  leads  me  to  another  item---my  temporary  muses.   And  this  time,  there  were  3  of  them--

...and  here's  how  they  came  together--

and  a  little  info  about  these  2  little  ones--

I've  had  them  for  a  couple  of  years  now.   I'll  find  stuff  like  this, and  then  I  don't  want  to  part  with  it.  It's  not  like  I  had  them  out  or  anything--they  were  just  tucked  away  in  the  cute  little  box  that  they  came  in.   So  I  figured it  was  time  to  let  them  go,  and  be  out  in  the  world  again.   I  found  them  at  the  127 Corridor Sale --said  to  be  the  "largest  yard  sale"  (approximately  600  miles).   It  always  starts  the  first  week  in  August  for  5  days  from  dawn  till   dusk,  and  we  try  to  go  when  we  can.  Last  year  we  didn't  go,  but  this  year  we  are!--and  I  can't  wait!!

And  for  the  plaster  part  of  this  post--when  I  was  making  my  piece  that  I  showed  you  HERE,  I  had  made  up  too  much  of  the  plaster  of  paris,  and  once  it's  dry,  it's  dry.   So  I  put  the  rest  of  it  on  another  wood  panel  that  I  had,  and  here's  the  result  of  that--

This  time  I  painted  mostly  with  gouache,  which  is  basically  a  very  thick  watercolor  in  a  tube  with  very  intense  color--another  great  medium  to  work  with,  but  a  bit  on  the  pricey  side.  I  just  love  the  results  you  get  when  you  mix  the  watercolors with  the  plaster--

......and  LOVE  that  texture!

Sharing Brings Inspiration

When  I  took  Christy  Tomlinson's  She Art 2  workshop  last  year,  she  had  a  guest  teacher  one  of  the  weeks,  and  it  was  Junelle  Jacobsen  who  shared  with  us  a  very  fun  rolled  paper  technique.  And  then,  Christy  made  a  you tube  tutorial  about  it  that  you  can  see  here--




So   I  decided  to  put  my  own  spin  on  this  technique  with  my  house...

.....and  my  cupcake....

...followed  by  a  good  cup  of  coffee...

I  used  my  painted  pages  that  I  showed  you  HERE.

This  is  very fun  to  do  and  VERY  addictive!

And  then.....I  was  reading  my  latest  issue  of  Somerset  Studio,  and  I  had  to  share  with  you  this  article  by  Carolyn  Dube  about  making  your  own  artist  tape  (another  love  of  mine).   I  love  these  decorative  tapes,  and  when  I  saw  her  article,  I  knew  that  I  had  to  try  it.    All  you  have  to  do  is  get  the  plain  white  artist  tape  and stick  it  onto  a  non-stick  surface  (I  used  wax  paper),  and  have  fun  with  it---just  like  painting  your  own  papers--

....which  I've  already  started  to  use  on  my  2  rolled  paper  pieces...

This  is  why  I  love  the  online  art  community--everyone  is  here  to  help  and  encourage  each  other.   Why  keep  these  things  to  yourself??   I  get  as  much  excitement  showing  and  sharing  any  tips  or  techniques    as  I  do  discovering  them  and  trying  them  out!

And  there's  one  more  thing  I  wanted  to  share  with  you.  I  found  this  on  a  facebook  friend's  page--LOVE  it!

 

Boxed In

So  last  week  I  was  bottled  up,  and  this  week  I'm  boxed  in--but  in  a  good  way   : )

And  in  Joyce's  Fresco  Workshop,  our  last  lesson  was  learning  to  work  on  plaster  of  paris.   Joyce  wanted  us  to  apply  the  plaster  on  wood  but  on  only  on  part  of  it--for  a  real  mixed  media  piece--

Plaster  of  paris  is  a  lot  different  to  work  on  then  modeling  or  molding  paste,  or  even  the  pre-mixed  filler  plaster.   It's  almost  chalk-like--I developed  a  love/hate  relationship  with  it.   You  really  can't  use  watercolor  pencils  on  it  because  it  chips  the  plaster  away,  but  when  you  use  regular  watercolors--Oh!!--Love  it!   The  color  just  seeps  into  the  plaster  wonderfully.   I've   been  learning  a  lot  about  watercolors  too--I'm  really  liking  them!

And  my  peacock  was  on  the  bare  wood--

I've  never  painted  a  peacock  before,  so  I  had  no  idea  what  I  was  doing,  but  that's  what  is   so  nice  about  this  type  of  art.   Nothing  has  to  be  or  should  be  perfect.   And  the  peacock  and  background  were  done  in  true  mixed  media  style--acrylics,  graphite,  and  those  wonderful  Prismacolor  nupastels.    If  you've  never  worked  with  chalk  pastels  before,  I  recommend  these.  I  like  them  better  than  the  pan  pastels  or  even  the  conte  crayons--so  easy  to  work  with--and  the  way  the  colors  go  down--WONDERFUL!!

This  is  what  I  love  about  mixed  media--it's  impossible  to  get  bored--sooooo  many  possibilities.

But  I'm  going  to  take  a  little  time  off  today  and  enjoy  this  most  excellent weather  we've  been  having.   I  don't  remember  the  last  time  we've  had  a  full  week  of  sun  and  70  degree  weather  in  March!!   And  I  know  that  in  a  week  there  could  be  snow  on  the  ground.   So  Lenny  (my  turtle)  and  I  are  going  to  go  outside  today  and  enjoy  this  wonderful  sunshine!

Bottled Up

Still  playing  with  my  'stuff',  and  this  time  it's  bottles.

These  little  things  can  become  very  addictive--kind  of  like  ATC's.   It  doesn't  take  much  because  they're  so  small,  and  when  you  have  so  much  'fodder'  like  I  do,  the  possibilities  are  endless.    And  they're  all  inside  of  this  fun  shadowbox--

And  then  I  added  a  little  variation  with  this  next  one--I  threw  a  salt  (or  maybe  pepper?)  shaker  into  the  mix.

I  knew  when  I  saw  that  lone  salt  shaker  last  year  at  a  garage  sale  that  I  could  use  it  for  something.    It's  now  the  body  of  my  Frida-like  doll.    The  bottle  is  attached  to  it  underneath--I  covered  it  with  text  pages.    And  love  those  little  watch  part  vials  too.    And  I  put  her  in  another  garage  sale  find--a  wooden  cheese  box--

How  fun!

And  this  next  one  is  my  favorite--

No  bottles  in  this  one--this  time  I  got  out  my  stash  of  children's  blocks---and  believe  me--I  have  a  lot!   I  can  never  pass  these  things  up  when  I  see  them.  

And  look  at  these  fun  birds--

I  knew  that  I  wanted  to  put  birds  in  here,  but  I  wanted  a  little  something  different.   So  I  took  a  regular  craft  store  bird  and  covered  it  bits  and  pieces  of  dictionary  pages--

....just  the  look  that  I  was  looking  for.   You  can  use  any  kind  of  thin  paper  like  tissue  or  telephone  book  pages  also--it's  so  easy.

So  these  past  3  pieces  were  made  from  what  I  like  to  call  my  scavenger  hunt.   I  would  get  an  idea  in  my  head,  and  then  the  biggest  challenge  was  to  try  and   remember  where  I  had  everything.   It   was  actually  kind  of  fun,  because  I've  found  other  things  that  have  given  me  other  ideas  for  other  pieces--like  putting  a jigsaw  puzzle  together!

For Baby

I  had  to  take  some  time  out  for  my  granddaughter  due  to  be  here  in  early  April.   My  son  had  this  cabinet  from  his  bachelor  days--

It's  about  3'  tall,  and  it's  perfect  to  use  for  the  new  baby,  but  a  little  bland,  so  he  asked  me  if  I  could  paint  it,  which  I  was  happy  to  do.

Now  it  goes  great  with  the  new  crib  set  that  they  have--it's  a  butterfly  theme  in  these  colors.   I  haven't  painted  any  furniture  in  a  while  and I  always  love  to  see  the  transformation.

Wow,  if  you  would  have  told  me  a  year  ago  that  I  was  going  to  be  painting  a  piece  of  furniture  for  my  granddaughter------well,  you  would  have  knocked  me  over  with  a  feather!
