August--A Mini Show and Tell, and an Art Retreat--Getting Ready!

 So  August  was  a  little  bit  of  everything  with  my  art-making,  not  to  mention, I'm  a  little  down  watching  summer  come  to  an  end  (however  I  love  Fall!)  I  started  out  getting  out  my  paints  and  paper  and  not  over-thinking......

I  used  110lb  cardstock  that  I  painted  first  with black  gesso  and then  I took   some  of  my  favorite  stencils  with  bright  contrasting  colors--love  the  look!

Next  I  experimented  with  my  gel  plate.   I  first  got  my  background  color  on  the  plate with  stencils  and  different  colors--

and  then  I  made  templates  to  use  as  masks  for  the  plate--

--added  a  solid  color  (in  this  case, purple)  and  laid  down  the  original  paper  and  here  was  my  result--

I  decided  to  use  my Posca  Pen (a  new  love, because  it's  permanent  and  it's  paint!)  to outline  some  of  the  images.  So  what  I  did  after  was  basically  cleaning  up the  gel  plate.  The  image  of  the  masks  were  still on  the  plate  and  they  were  dry.  So  I  knew  that  they  would  transfer  on  to  the  paper  nicely  if  I  added  more  paint  on top of  them  on the  gel  plate,  and  I  really  like  the  result-(this was done on  plain white paper)--

...a  ghost  print  of  the  images--I  like  it!

These  papers  were  practice  for  a  little  bit  of what  we  will  be  doing  at  our  Art  Retreat  coming  in  early  September.  We  have  this  retreat  every  year  and  we  really  enjoy  coming  together  for  the  purpose  of  nothing  else  but  to  make   art  for  3  solid  days.   This  year  will  be  a  bit  different,  to  say  the  least,  but  it  is  happening.  There  will  be  a  total  of  8  of  us,  and we'll each  have  our  own  8  foot  table  at  a  wonderful  location  not  too far  from  my  home .

This  year  I  will  be  teaching  2  separate  projects.  The  first  one  will  be  faux  encaustics.  I've  never  worked  with  real  encaustic  before,  mainly  because  of  the  cost,  so  I  did  some  researching  on  the  faux  part,  and  I  found  one  technique that  worked  for  me,  and  here's  the  result--

this  was  made  with layers  of  gel  medium--great  effect!!  And  here's  another  variation--

I love how the layers come through.

And the next project is going to involve my new venture with polymer  clay.  I  wanted  to  learn  how  to  use  polymer  clay  so  I  could  add  it  to  my  mixed  media  pieces.   Here's  the  piece  we will be  working  on--

--and  here's  where  painting  papers  come  in.  They  are  the  background  of  the  piece  and  the  polymer  clay  accents  are  the  addition.   When   I  first  started  teaching  myself  this  medium  I  wanted  to  transform  my painted  whimsy  art  into  clay  form.   

I  made  the  birds  in  my  art  journal  first  and  then  I  made  them  into  polymer  clay.

But  this  project  isn't  exclusive--I'll  bring  some  more  variations  with  me--

I  want  to  show  how  versatile  polymer  clay  is--basically  you  can  bring  your  own  voice  to  it.

--some  more  playing  around  with  this  very  fun  and  very  forgiving  medium.

So  for  the  most  part,  this  is  what has  been  keeping  me  busy  the  last  few  weeks,  along  with  other  art  here  and  there.  My  main  focus,  however,  is  the  art  retreat.  It's  important  right  now  to  keep  yourself  healthy  in  these  times,  but  also  to  keep  your  mind  healthy  too  and  for  me  that's  some  art  therapy!  Stay  safe  everyone.

Bringing My Journal Girl Out

I  haven't  had a whole  lot  of  time  for  art  lately--we're  going  out  of  town  for  a  few  days  for  the  holiday  weekend,  so  I've  been  getting  ready  for  that,  and  last  week  we  were  getting  things  ready  for  my  daughter's  wedding.    But  I've  taken   some  time  for  art  every  day,  just  like  I  always  do (I  can't  imagine  not  doing  that!)

Last  month  I  made  a  new  girl  for  my  journal--

I  love  making  these  faces  in  my  journal--I  usually  end  up  liking  them,  and  when  I  do,  I  want  to  use  them.   So  that's  what  I  did--I  put  her  on  the  top  of  a  cigar  box--

Whenever  I  do  this (print  out  my  art),  I  always  enhance  it  some  more  with  paint  or  crayons  or  whatever,  and  I  like  her  face  even  more  now.  And  I'm  very  happy  with  the  rest  of  the  box  too--

And  then  I  wanted  to  use  images  from  by  Dream  pieces  so  I  made  a  Dream  box--

This  is  the  top....and....a  few  weeks  ago,  I  went  to  an  antique  show,  and I  found  these--

I  knew  excactly  what  I  was  going  to  use  them  for....

They  make  great  pedestal  stands  for  boxes--among  other  uses,  I'm  sure.

....really  happy  with  both  of  these,  and  I  can't  wait  to  bring  them  back  out  for  my  upcoming  shows--- really  anxious  and  excited  for  the  show  season!

Learning From Jane...AND...Mystele (plus..A New Blog Event Coming Next Month)

I   Love  my  class  with  Jane  DesRosier  (Grittyjane)  Portraits  and  Papers.    I  watched  her  very  detailed  videos  on  painting  a  face  over  collaged  papers,  and  for  my  first  try--I'm  very  happy  with  my  face--

I  think  one  of  the  things  that  I'm  most  happy  with,  is  I  actually  sketched  right  on  to  the  surface (a wood cradle board,  in  this  case)---over  the  collaged  papers.   For  so  long  now,  I've  been  playing  it  safe,  and  sketching  my  face  on  a  separate  piece  of  paper and  when  I  was  happy  with  it,  I  would  adhere  it  to  my  artwork.   But  I  wanted  the  texture  of  the  papers  underneath  to  come  through.   This  is  what  I   most  love  about  Jane's  paintings.   My  second  favorite part  is  all  of  these  layers  of  paint  on  her  face--you  can  add  as  little  or  as  much  as  you  want--there's  no  mistakes--the more layers,  the  better  the depth  and  texture.

And   the  collaged  paper  part  was  fun  too--

Jane   shows  a  very  easy  way  to  get  back  some  of  the  patterns  of  your  scrapbook  paper,  or  whatever  paper  that  you  have  underneath.  I've  never  seen  it  done  this  way,  but  it  works  wonderfully.   I  think  next  time,  I'm  going  to  try  to  take  away  even  more  paint.   You  can  add  lots  of  layers  of  paint  this  way  and  still bring  up  some  of  the  color  of  the  papers....but....you'll  have  to  take  her  class  to  find  out  how.

So  as  far as  how I  finished  the  piece---well  this  is  where  my  class  with  Mystele  comes  in--Gut  Art.   I've  mentioned  this  class  before--first  one  I  ever  took.  It's  a  class  on  finding  your  own  creative  voice--in  other  words--your  own  personal  style.   When  people  tell  me  that  they  recognize  my  style--I'm  like--really???--I  have  a  style??    But  you  know  what,  we  all  do,  even  if  we  don't  think  that  we  do.   I  visit  a  lot  of  blogs  regularly,  and  I  can  now  start  to  pick  out  whose  art  is  whose  without  even  seeing  their  name.  Our  art  is  like  our  fingerprints--everyone's  is  different--even  if  we  try  to copy  a  piece  of  art  from  a  class  or  another  painting.  It  won't  be  the  same   because  it's  coming  from  us--that's  what  makes  it  one-of-a-kind.    I'm  telling  you,  I'll  never  stop  plugging  Mystele's  class.   The  only  thing  about  it--is  that  you  have  to  be  an  active  participant  before  it  can  click  with  you.   I  think  she's  having  another  class  in  the  summer,  if  you  want  to  check  it  out--it's  worth  it! 

So  my  point  about  all  of  this,  is  that  I  strayed  from  from  the  rest  of  Jane's  lesson  and  started  adding  my  own  "voice"  to  my  piece--

This  isn't  Jane's  style---it's  mine!

And  I  also  wanted  to  tell you  about  the  the  blog  event  coming  in  June.   Kristin  from  Twinkle Twinkle  has  created  a  Summer  of  Color!

It  will  last  for  10  weeks,  and  every  week  she'll  give  us  a  color  prompt  to  use  in  our  artwork.   But  it's  much  more  than  a  weekly  challenge  group---go  check  it  all  out  HERE.   I  met  Kristin  when  I  first  started  blogging  and  participated  in  the  Mixed  Media  Monday  challenges.   I  just  love  her  endless  enthusiasm  for  art  and  life  in  general.   She's  one  of  those  ladies  that  I  know   I  would  love  to  hang  out  with--so  I  want  to say--Thank  You  Kristin  for  starting  this!  and---Hey  everyone  reading  this!--spread  the  word!!
