New Art

Before  I  show  you  my  new  art,  I  want  to  thank  everyone  for  all  of  your  visits  and  comments  on  my circus  pieces.   A  few  of  you  have  asked  me  if  I'm  going  to  be  selling  my  boxes  online, and  yes  I  am  after  my  show  in  Dec.   But  I'll  be  sure  to  let  everyone  know!

So  I  have  a  little  more  time  to  do  the  kind  of  art  that  I  like  to  make,  and  that  started  out  with  painting  my  own  papers--

These  are  on  watercolor  papers.   I  wanted  something  really  durable  and  heavy  enough  to  hold  all  of  the  layers  that  I  put  on,  starting  with  spray  inks  and  then  acrylics  mixed  in  with  stamping  and  whatever  I  had  on  hand.

And  then  I  started  out  with  my  first  layer  on  my  surface--

These  papers  were  so  stiff,  I  didn't  even  mess  with  the  regular  gel  medium  to  adhere  them--I  went  right  to  the  big-boy  stuff  and  used  my  heavy  gel  medium,  which  worked  like  a  charm.

And  then  came  the  2nd  layer--

.......and  followed  with  the  finishing  touches....

.....including  the  "frame-work"...

If  you  read  my  blog,  then  you  know  that  these  are  one  of  my  favorite  surfaces  to  work  on,  with  the  added  bonus  that  I  will  pay  no  more  than  $5.00  for  these  doors  (and  even that's  a pretty  steep  price)  at  garage  sales.

I  really  enjoyed  making  this  because  I  took  my  time  and  just  enjoyed  the  process,  but  I  know  that  I'm  probably  going  to  regret  enjoying  this  too  much,  because  when  it  comes  down  to  the  wire--I'm  going  to  be  stressing  out  (like  I  usually  do)  before  these  shows  and  wondering--  Did  I  make  enough???

But  in  the  meantime---this  was  fun!!

I'm Seeing Red (in a good way)...and Meet the Finches

This  week  it's  Red  at  Kristin's Summer  of  Color.   This  has  been  really  fun,  and  even  though  I'm  very  busy  getting  ready  for  my  upcoming  show  season,  I've  been  able  to  make  these  pieces  and  plan  on  taking   them  with  me  to  my  shows.   As  a  matter  of  fact,  I  finally  had  my  first  one  for this year  on Saturday  (more  about  that  later).   My  point  is--is  that  I  was  in  a  hurry  this  week,  because  I  was  getting  ready  for  it  and  also  getting  ready  to  leave  since   it   was  out  of  town.  This  piece  just   came  together  for  me  very  easily--I  think  mainly  because  I  didn't  have  time  to  over think--I  just  did  it--

This is  what  came  to  mind  when  Kristin  told  us  the  color  was  red---heart  and  home--so  I  just  went  with  it...

...and  the  other  prompt  she  suggested  was  incorporating  wings  of  any  kind  into  our  piece...butterflies---again,  my  first  thought...

...and  of  course...some  embellishments

And  they  all  came  together  on  another  one  of  my  favorite  surfaces--these  very  deep  wrapped  canvases  that  I  find  at  Dick  Blick ( which  I've  mentioned  before,  and  probably  will  again)  --the  sides  are  over  2  inches  deep--wonderful!

I  love  that  you  can  make  the  sides  a  piece  of  artwork  in  themselves  or  you  can  just  extend  the  art  that  you  have  on  the  front.
So  once  again--thank  you   Kristin  for  having  this  very  fun  weekly  prompt,  and  it's  never  too  late  to  join  in  on  the  fun--head  on  over  to  Kristin's  to  check  out  all  of  the  other  red  art!

And  like  I  said--I  had  my  first  show  on  Saturday---here  I  am  all  fresh  and  ready  in  the  morning  waiting  for  the show  to  start--

...after  about  an  hour...I  was  all  wilted--it  was  SO  extremely  HOT.....however....that  didn't  keep  the  crowds  away--

This  is  a  great  little  community  where  the  residents  support  their  town,  and  they  always  come  out  for  this  show...not  to  mention  their  support  for  us  artists  with   their  appreciation  and  also  their  purchases.   It's  just  a  great  show  that  I  really  enjoy  being  a  part  of.

And  here  they  are--the  Finch  family--all  5  of  them  (yep...all  5  eggs  hatched!)

Their  names  are  Scott,  Nick,  Lisa,  Jennifer,  and  John....and  by  some  strange  coincidence..that  happens  to  be  the  name  of  MY  kids  too!!

Still Blue...but...In a Different Way

First  of  all...thank  you  all   for  all  of  your  caring  comments  and  support--what  a  world  of  difference  a  few  words  can  do---thank  you!!   I  feel  better  and  am  not  looking  forward  to  the  Dr.'s  visit  this  week  with  Leo,  because  I  know  the  outcome.   Actually,  the  Dr.  was  preparing  me  last  week  for  this,  but  I  wasn't  ready  to  listen,  but  now  I am  and  I'm  listening  to  Leo,  and  it's  time  for  me  to  finally  let  him  go.   This  is  going  to  be  a  hard  week.

Okay...enough.....I'm  tired  of  feeling  sad......I  want  to  talk  about  about  what  makes  me  happy....ALWAYS---art!

And  Kristin's  Summer  of  Color--this  came  at  the  right  time,  and  the  color  this  week  is  blue  (oddly  enough).   But  blue  is  also  a  very  soothing  color,  and  those  are  the  hues  I  chose  to  work  with.

So  I  started  out  with  this  cigar  box  from  my  local  tobacco  store,  which  by  some  strange  coincidence  also  started  out  as  blue--

and  here's  how  it  ended  up  when  I  finished--

 

....and   let  me  show  you  the  details..

....one  of  my  favorite  techniques  that  I  use  alot--Golden's  soft  molding  paste  over  a  stencil,  and  then  when  it  was  dry,  I  randomly  stamped  over  it.   It's  a  great  technique,  in  that  it  doesn't  have  to  be  perfect  and  you  still  can  get  a  lovely  result.

....lots  of  vintage  photos  that  I  transferred  with  gel  medium  and  also  Lazertran  decal  paper.

And  sometimes  I  like  to  use  personal  photos  in  my  artwork---just  adds  that  special  touch  to  the  piece.   This  photo  is  on  the  top  of  the  box,  and  it  most  definitely  has  special  meaning  to  me...

....my  Grandmother,  my  father,  and  my  Great  Aunt...

And  I'm  always  on  the  look-out  for  old  knobs,  handles,  whatever  I  can  find  for  the  top  and  bottom  of  my  boxes--
