Still Having Fun With My Papers

I'm  getting  back  into  lots  of  art  now  that  the  holidays  are  over  with--as  much  as  I  enjoy  them,  it's  nice  to  get  back  to  normal  again.   So  I've  been  using  my  painted  papers  from  my  last  post   ( with  the  help  of  others  I've  found  'hidden'  in  my  room)--

 

 

....and  you  know  what?--I  still have  scraps  left---I  could  keep  going---I  love  how  my  art  turns  out  with  these--much  better  than  using  scrapbook  papers--plus  they're  unique--wish  I had  more  time  to  just  paint  papers  all  day  long--so  fun  to do!

My Happy Holiday

Hi  everyone!--I'm back--I  hope  you've  all  had  a  happy  Holiday  and   looking  forward  to  2013.   We  certainly  did  around  here--but  wow--I'm  a  bit  exhausted  and also  a  bit  glad  that  things  will  be  getting  back  to  normal.    One  of  my  favorite  parts  about  Christmas  is  shopping  for  gifts--I  really  do  like  getting  out  into  the  busy  stores  and  'fighting'  those  crowds--to  me  that's  fun--really!  But  I  also  did  some  online  shopping  which  can  be  a  bit  scary--just  click that  button, and  you  can  get  anything  you  want--I  have  to  admit--I  get  out  of  control.   I  even  did  some  shopping  for  me--

 

 

 

Pam  Carriker  is  now  offering  her  very  popular  online  class  Journal  365  in  a  DVD  format,  and since  I  never  took  this  class--well  I  decided  that  I  needed  this  for  Christmas.  I  haven't  really  started  watching  the  videos  yet  (4 discs!),  but  I  know  that  they'll  be  excellent--it's  Pam  Carriker--how  can  they  not  be?!

 

And  for  my  art  room--

 

 

This  is  a  print  that  I  ordered  from  Sharon  Tomlinson's  Etsy shop  Norah's  Ghost.   She  made  this  piece  during  our  online  class  A  Diary  of  Faces  (I  talk  about  this  class  in  my  last  post).   I   found  this  frame  for  it--nice  size  too--13x 19--perfect  fit--I  love,  love,  love  Norah's  Ghost!

And  I  found  an  unexpected  surprise  in  my  mailbox  on  Christmas  Eve--

I'm  in  the  latest  issue  of  Somerset  Studio  coming  out  in  Jan--THAT  was  a  very  nice  surprise!

So  now  that  things  are  winding  down,  I've  been  able  to  take  some  time  for  myself  and  'play'  in  my  room--one  of  my  favorite  things  to  do  is  paint  papers--

....and  then  doing  something  with  them...


 

 

 

 

 

I  enjoy  the  entire  process  of  making  pieces  like  this--from  starting  out   with  a  blank  piece  of  paper  (any  kind--text pages,  cardstock, canvas  paper,  watercolor  paper,  etc. etc.)  and  finishing  with  a  piece of  art--having  no  idea  how  they  will  end  up--the  papers  help  me  make  the  story.

 

So  I  hope  everyone  will  be  able  to  take  the  time  in  2013  for  their  passion  too--it  IS  the  best  therapy--even  in  these  very  cold  months  ahead  (well--at  least  in this  part  of  the  country).

A Diary of Faces

Way.........back  in  July---I  started  what  is  now  one  of  my  favorite  online  classes  taught  by  one  of  my  favorite  artists  Sharon  Tomlinson---A  Diary  of  Faces.    It  wasn't  a  self-paced  class--it  was  a  weekly  class  being  taught  'live'  by  Sharon--she  was  working  along  with  us.   It was  all  about  studying  famous  painters  from  different  countries--  going  for  their  painting style--not  necessarily  copying  them,  but  learning  different  techniques  and  ways  of  portrait  painting.

 

I  was  able  to  keep  up  with  the  class  for  3  weeks,  until  I  just  got  too  busy  with  my  show  season,  but  in  that  3  weeks,  I  LOVED  it,  and  I  learned  that  I  could  do  things  with  my  pencil  and  paint  that  I  never  would  have  tried  (like  trying  to  paint  what  I  saw  from  another  image).  I  have  to  admit  that  I  was  very  intimidated  by  the   other  students--I  have  never  seen  such  a  bunch  of  naturally  talented  artists--I  almost  didn't  want  to  continue....but  I  did....and  I   learned  something  new  with  each  painting...

 

 

 

She  is  inspired  by  Georgette  Chen's  Portrait  of  Malay  Woman.  At  first,  it  was  attempting   the  same  face  as  the  original,  but  then,  for  me--it  was  more  about  the  clothing--trying  to  achieve  the  look  of  folds  and  shadows.

 

And  the  next  week..

 

 

...was  Nicolae  Grigorescu--Portrait  of  Alexandrina  Filonescu.....with  this  one--I  went  for  the  same  effect  as  in  the  original--a  very  loose  painting  style,  and  limited  palette  (which  is  hard  for  me!)  I  almost  gave  up  on  this  one,  but  I'm  so  glad  that  I didn't.

 

And  the  next  week,  I  wandered  just  a  bit--we  were  studying  a  Danish  painter,  but  I  decided  on  another  one--

 

 

....Peder  Severin  Kroyer--This  is  his  wife  Marie,  whom  he  painted  a  lot.  On  this  one  I  was  practicing  that  dreaded  profile,  and  also  I  was  trying  to  achieve  the  angle  of  her  head  resting   against  the  back  of  the  chair--a  little  fustrating  for  me  again--but  I  kept  going.

 

So  then  I  stopped,  and  now  (in  December),  I've  picked  up  my  "Diary"  again,  which  is  actually  a  gessoed-over  children's  board  book  (which  I  intend  to  fill with  nothing  but  these  faces).   This  time  I  went  to  England...

 

 

She's  my  favorite  inspired  by  Dante  Gabriel  Rossetti's  Santa  Lilies.   With  her--it  was  the  hand--they're  killers  for  me.   Now  I  always  thought,  just  because  of  his  name,  that  Rossetti  was  from  Italy.  But  after  reading  about  him,  I  found  that  he  was  born  in  England  with  Italian  parents--another  bonus  from  this  class--I  found  that  I  love  researching  these  master  painters.

 

So  the  class is over  now,  but  it's  always  accessible  for  all  of  the  students.....BUT,  also,  Sharon  is  offering  it  now  as  a  self-paced  class  HERE  in  2  parts--this  was  an  amazing  18  week  course--so  you  can  either take  the  first  9  weeks  or  the  last--or  both.   I  also  want  to  mention  that  she  teaches  a  lot  of  different  painting  techniques  especially  with  different  skin  tones--it's  just  a  Wonderful  class  that  I  highly  recommend--it  challenges you,  and  it  doesn't  matter  what  your  skill level  is  either--I  learned  how  much  I  enjoy  this  process--and  the  best  part---it's  just  for  me  and  my  'diary'--so  if  I'm  not  happy  with  a  particular  painting--it doesn't  matter--I'm  still  learning.  It's  really  true--the  only  way  you  can  learn  is  from  making  mistakes.

My Etsy Shop is Open (and some other ramblings)

It's  not  like  I've  closed  my  Etsy  shop  or  anything,  but  it's  been  pretty  much  neglected  since  July.   But  now  that  my show  season  is  over  with,  I  can   take  time  to  do  other  things  like  actually  clean  my  house,  maybe  cook  a  meal,  and  list  items  in  my  Etsy  store. 

 

My  show  from  last  weekend  wasn't  the  most  profitable,  but  it  was  very  enjoyable,  and  I  love  being  a  part  of  it--a  very  good  quality  art  show---I'm  hoping  to  go  back  next  year.  But  in  the  end,  I  did  have  art  pieces  left,  and  if  you  want  to  take  a  look,  you  can  find  them  HERE.....and  here  they  are  all  together....

So  this  week  I'm  still  in  the  art-making  mode  for  customers---I  have  a  fairly  large order  from  2  lady  friends  that  ordered  some  pieces  from  me  a  couple  of  months  ago--and  that's  what  I've  been  doing  this  week--

 

 

.....need  to  be  shipped  by  next  Monday----I  met  these  2  ladies  this  year,  and  they  have  been  some  of  my  best  customers---and  I  appreciate  how  much  they  appreciate  my  art--I  make  them  smile,  and  they  make  me  smile.   This  is  one  of  the  reasons  that  I  like  getting  out  and  doing  these  shows--the  great  people  that  I  meet,  along  with  exceptional  fellow  artists!

 

But  I'm  also  taking  time  for  my  gift.   I  read  Pam  Carriker's  post  at  the  Sketchbook  Challenge  all  about  gift  giving  and  what  you  can  do  for  yourself  during  this  hectic  time  of  year---taking  time  to  do  whatever  you  enjoy  most--even  if  it's  just  for  10  minutes  a  day.   And  what  relaxes  me   is  sketching  faces--

And  one  more  thing---I  have  lots  more  time  for  this  little  sweetie--

 

 

Zoie!!    She  turned  8  months  old  this  week,  and  every  time  I  see  her,  she  seems  to  have  grown  even  more.   It's  fun  being  a  Grandma!!

 

 

Poppy and Somerset Love

I'm  painting  poppies  again.   Last  time  I  painted  them  was  on  furniture  (you  can  see  them  HERE ).   But  this  time  I  decided  to  try  them  on  a  canvas--

 

 

 

 

I  think  I  have  a  new  love--painting  poppies!.....and  I  really  like  this  color  combo  too...

 

So  I  got  out  one  of  my  cupboard  doors  and  painted  some  more!

 

 

It's  going  to  be hard  to  let  these  go--they're  going  with  me  next  week  to  my  last  show  of  the  season--we'll  see  if  they  come  home  with  me  or  not.

 

And  another  love  of  mine--Somerset  Studios--right  now  it's  Somerset  Studio  Gallery,  because  I'm  in  the  latest  issue  coming  out  in  Dec.!

And I can't believe that I'm saying this already--but I hope everyone celebrating Thanksgiving--has a very happy one!! (Where is the time going??) I love this holiday--family time--the best!

Playing With Canvases and Backgrounds

I'm  getting  busy  again--I  have  one  more  show  at  the  end  of  November,  so  lots  going  on  around  here.    This  time  I  decided  to  play  on  canvases--much  like  you would   on  a  journal  page  or  in  my  case---normally  when  I'm  painting  papers--

 

 

 

......just  playing  around  with  layers  of  paints  and  stencils  and  adding  texture  until  I  was  happy  with  the  results,  and  then  using  the  backgrounds  for  the  main  design  of  each  piece--

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

There's  lots  of  layers  on  these  pieces--which  would  have  freaked  me  out  just  a  year  ago--but  you  know  how  everyone  says--that  you  can  fix  anything  when  making  art--it  really  is  true!!  (just  keep  going  and  don't  stop  until  you  like  it)

 

And  a  P.S.  here--I  liked  that  last  piece so  much  that  I  went  a  little  further  with  it--

 

 

I  cropped  a  photo  of  it  and  printed  them  out  on  my  computer  to  put  on  these  really  popular  6x6  canvases  that  I  make.   

 

I  really  enjoy  making  art  like  this--once  I  get  through  the  "ugly"  part  of  the  canvases--I  always  end  up  liking  the  end  results--try  it!!
