The Month of March--Creatively Speaking

WOW--what  a  difference  a  month  makes!  By  now,  we  all  know  about  the  COVID-19  virus,  and  I  know  that  anyone  reading  this  knows   to  STAY  HOME!--enough  said--the  internet  has  been  flooded  with  what's  going  on.   So  for  now,  we  need  to  find  diversions  and  adapt  to  life  as  it  is  for  the  time  being.  My  diversion  and  also  my  therapy  is  art,  and  I'm  so  happy  for  that!    That's  what  this  blog  is  all  about--art  making,  and  let  me  tell  you  that's  what  has  been  occupying  my  time--no  more  talk--here's  what  I've  been  up  to--

I  have  piles  and  piles  of  scraps  of  my  painted  papers--I'm  not  going  to  let  them  go  to  waste--

and  here's  what  I  did  with  them--

with  the  help  of  embellishments,  and also  a  plain  IKEA  mirror.   Still going  with  the  papers,  I  reversed  a  6 x 12  cradle  board  to  turn  into  a  shadowbox--

and  still  more--another  paper  mosaic--

After  a  while  though,  I  need  to  get  out  my  paints  and  paint.  So  that's  what  I  did  on  a  wood  cigar  box--

some  more  poppies!

Changing  gears--as  I  was  saying  in  my  last  post,  I  now  have  time  to  'clean'  my  house,  which  always  turns  into  more  of  a  discovery  of  'art  supplies' and  I  get  side-tracked  from  my  cleaning--some  new  assemblage  art  came  out  of  my  house  cleaning--

Circus  time!

my  favorite  kind  of  art--you'll  never  see  me  at  an  actual  circus--but  I  LOVE  circus-themed  art  

every  good circus  has  a  fortune  teller--right?

So  when  I  made  this  circus  art  is  when  the  quarantine  started,  and  that's  when  I  decided  to  get  out  my  Strathmore  mixed  media  journal  that  I  got  back  in  December.   I  have  time  for  it  now  and  I  want  to  go  back  to  making  my  journal  faces  again  which  I  used  to  do  years  ago--just  for  me  with  no  critiquing--whatever  comes  out  on  the page is  what  comes  out--

Okay,  I  know  this  is  a  bit  lengthy,  but  it's  been  a  looong  month  at  home--so  more  painting  to  show  you--

along  with  paper  mosaics--

and  that  brings  us  to  here--the  end  of  March--on  a  sad  note,  we  were  planning  to  leave  in  a  couple  of  days  to  visit  our  son  in  Florida,  and  also  going  with  us  was  going  to  be  my  daughter  and  her  husband  and  my  grandson  --we  were  going  to go  to  Disneyworld  :-(  

Better  times  will  be  coming  and  when  they're  here,  we  will  be  making  that  trip!

I  hope  I've  inspired  you  to  take  some  time  for  yourself  and  do  what  makes  you  happy--no  matter  what  it  is--it  (without  a  doubt)  makes  a  difference!

What I Did in February

I'm  having  trouble  updating  this  blog   (since Facebook came  into  the  picture),  so  I'm  trying  a  new  'thing'.  I'm  going  to  post  once  a  month  of  what  I've  been  up  to  creatively.

In  the  first  week  I  had  my  paints  out  and  I  always  get  Spring  fever  this  time  of  year  (if  you  live  in  a  cold  weather  climate,  you  know  what  I'm  talking  about)--so  I  painted  Spring--

Once  I  had  the  paint  out  I  did  what  I  always  do  and  started  playing  with  it.  I  do  that  with  mostly  white  cardstock  (110lb) --I  don't  need   to  think  about  it  and  try  different  techniques--if  I  don't  like  it--it's  just  paper--no  big  deal.

So  with  those  papers and  one  of  my  favorite  surfaces to  work  on  and  repurpose--a  cabinet  door--I  made  some  new  neighborhoods--Love  making  houses--

And at the end of the month I had a request from a poppy lover for 3 different pieces--

These were all started with a layer of collage (text pages) and then I painted over them with acrylics.  I  like  the  texture  the  printed  text  gives  under  the  paint.

In  between  all  of  this,  I've  been  cleaning  and  decluttering  my  art  space  (which  in  my  case,  is  my  whole  house)  and  I  have  been  listing  in  my  Etsy  shop--my  latest  listings--

So  that's  my  art  month  in  a  blog  post.   This is  not  my  favorite  time  of  year--weather wise--I  hate  the cold,  and  I  become  a  hermit,  but   it's  also   in  a  way, my  favorite.   There's  not  a  lot  going  on,  so  I  spend  more  time  in  my  studio,  which  is  definitely  my  happy  place!

Back To Painting

I've  been  pretty  busy  around  here,  but  I've  had  time  to  do  what  I  enjoy   a  LOT--painting.   So  here's  my  first  painting  of  the  year  (but  not  the  last!)

I  started  out  by  collaging  book  pages  on to  a  wood  surface--

and  then  I  forgot  to  take  a  picture  of  what  my  next  step  was,  but  basically  I  sketched  in  my  design--which  was  elephants--here  it  is  partially  done  (when  I  remembered  to  take  a  picture)

I  added  some  texture  on  the  ears  with  some  molding  paste--love  this  technique--

…..and  I  finished  it  with  some  collage  (the  ground  and  sun)  with  a vintage  map--

really  happy  with  these  2--one  of  my  favorite  subjects  to  paint!

Lots of New Art Part 1

I  have  been  away  for  a  long  time (almost 6  months  to  be  exact)--I'm  always  posting art  on  my  Facebook  art  page--it's  just  a  lot  easier  for  me.   But  shows  are  finished  for  this  year  (one  more  small one,  but  that's  it)  and  I  have  a  little  more  time  for  everything  else  including  getting  to  my  neglected  blog.

So  I've  been  painting  a  lot--

….and  I've  been  making  'houses'

I'll  post  more  later--I  don't  want  to  make  this  too  photo  heavy--yes,  I've  been  busy  in  my happy  place  :-)

New Painting/ Collage--Step-by-Step

This  is  one  of  my  favorite  ways  to  make  art--a  little  painting  mixed  with  paper  play.  Here's  the  finished  piece--

...but  I'll  start  from  the  beginning,  which  was deciding  on  my  color  palette--

these  are  the  papers  that  I  painted  for  this  project--my  color  palette

next  I  started  on  my  background--

this  is  a  20 x 20 deep  sided  birch  cradle  board--my  favorite  type  of  surface--paint  and  a  paper  mosaic  border

next  I  made  my  horse  templates--

this  makes  it  a  lot  easier  for  me  when  I  go  to  make  my  actual  subject  with  the  papers

I  don't  make  many  horses,  but  I  think  I  will  now--I  love  the  way  this  came  out.  And  here's  another  one  that  I  made  in  the  same  manner  with  a  more  familiar  subject  for  me--

I  love  elephants!!

Playing Around With a New Medium--Polymer Clay

Ever  since  I  discovered  Laurie  Mika  and  her  unique  approach  to  working  with  polymer  clay  I   wanted  to  try  working  with  this  'stuff',  but  always  putting  it  off---thinking  I  didn't  want  to  go  through  the  learning  process.   Finally  this  year,  I  decided  it  was  time  to  at  least  try  it.   And  yes,  there  is  definitely  a  learning  process  to  it,  but  during  the  process   I  found  that  you  can still  come  up  with  pieces  that  you're  happy  with,  encouraging  you  to  keep  going.

My  first  'piece'--

Okay, so  the  only  polymer  clay  piece  on  this  one  is  the  sun  face.   I  used  a  push  mold (the  supplies  for  polymer  clay  are  endless  and  addictive!).   And  I  was  so  thrilled  with  it--I  used   white Sculpey  Premo  clay  and  I  painted  it  after  I  baked  it.   The  painting  part  was  fun  for  me,  since  I'm  always  playing  with  paint  and  by  now,  I'm  very  comfortable  with  it.

So  next  I  wanted  to  do  something  a  little  more--

This  was  made on  a  cupboard  door.  The  'frame'  of  it  was  collaged  with  my  hand-painted  papers,  and  the  house  is  made  from  polymer  clay.  I  used  a  pasta  machine  to  roll  out the  clay  in  2  different  sections--the  main  house  and  then  the  roof,  stamping  the  roof  with  a  texture  plate   and  carving  into  the  house  with  a  stylus.   I  indented  the  little  holes  into  the  house,  so  after  I  baked  it  and  painted  it  I  glued  black  beads  into  the  holes.  The  rest  is  just  embellishments--basically  incorporating  polymer  clay  elements  into  my  mixed  media  style  of  art  that  I  usually  will  make.

So  on  another  cupboard  door--

This time  it's  the  birds  and  the  stamped  words  that  are  polymer.   I  made  a  template  for  the  birds,  and  used  a craft  knife  to  cut them  out  on  the  clay--so  easy!   I  wanted  the  clay  to  be  thicker  so  I used  a  rolling  pin,   again  with  the white  Premo.  I  like  painting  them myself, but  there  are  so  many  colors  that   you  can  choose  from,  you  can  find  your  own  colors  to  use,  and  not  have  to  paint  them.  The  hearts  have  texture  too.  I  made  them  from  modeling  paste  and  a  heart  stencil.

More  polymer  fun--

I  made  lots  of  small  tiles  for  the  one  piece  and  a  large  heart  for  the  other  piece.    I  glued  the  embellishments  into  the  large  heart  with  Sculpey  Bake  and  Bond  before  I  baked  it,  and then  I  painted  it.

My  favorite  part  about  polymer  clay  is  its  versatility  and  ease  to  work  with (a very forgiving medium)--if  you're  not  happy  with  what  you're  working  on,  just  roll  it  out and  start  over.  And  for  the  most  part,  I  got  the  basics  from  you tube  videos--hundreds  of  them  out  there!   I  can't  wait  to  see how  my  polymer  journey  goes---I  don't  know  what  I  was  waiting  for!!
