Faces From the Past

I  do  this  a  lot--I like  to  take  my  art  that  I've  made  in  the  past  and  add  it  to  brand  new  art.  In  this  case,  I  went  through  my  faces  from  older  art  pieces  and   sketchbooks.   I'll  find  a  face,  and  let  it  help  me decide  on  where  I  want  to  take  it.

I  print  out  the  face  on  my computer  and  then  I  gather  papers  that  compliment  it,  and  then  put  them  all  together  in  a  collage--

This  next  face  was  from 2013--one  of  my  favorites--

Originally, this  face  was  done  in  pastels,  and  the  poppies  were  created  with  acrylics.  So  I  took  her  face  and  made  a  new  collage--

bringing  in  the brand  new  colors  and  flowers  to  change her  up  a  bit.

And  I  also  like  to  go  through  my  sketchbook  drawings--

So  with  these  2  girls,  I  did  something  different.  I  printed  them  out  on  a  dictionary  page--

......and  put  them  on  a  box....

This  is  also  a  great  way  of  taking  your  art  journal  pages  and turning  them  into  art  pieces.  You  can  use  part  of  them  or  mix  them  with  other  pages--the  possibilities  are  endless,  and  always  fun.   Plus  it  helps  to  do  this  when  you're  in  a  bit  of  a  slump--your  old  art  will  help  you  make  some  new  art--I  promise!  :-)

Painting to Make Art or Art Journal Pages or Etc.

That's  what  I've  been  up  to  these  past  couple  of  weeks.   I'll  always  put  art  journal pages  in  my  blog  titles--I  don't  really  have  any  art  journals (just  LOTS  of  idea  sketchbooks),  but  I  know  that  what  I'm  showing  here  could  also  be  great  for  journal  pages--especially  if  you're  just  starting  out  and  trying  new  art  supplies  and  techniques--art  journals  are  a  great  way  to  start--to  learn.

So  on  140lb  cold  press  watercolor  paper  this  is  how  I  warmed  up--

....laid  down  some  paint  with  layers  of  stencils  and  stamping....and  then--

I  first  sketched  a  design  using  my  General's  sketch  and  wash  pencil.   It's  a  water  soluble  pencil--so  if  you  don't  like  what you  draw,  just  take  a  little  water  to  wipe  it  away.   There's  lots  of  pencils  like  this  out  in  the  market,  but  this  one,  for  whatever  reason,  is  my  favorite  one  to  use.    And  then  when  I  liked  what  I  did,  I  went  over  the  pencil  lines  with  my  black  marker  pen  (Faber-Castel  pitt  pen)--then  I  blocked  out  the  design  with  more  acrylic  paint--basically,  painting  the  background  to  bring  the  main  design  out  into  the  foreground.

So  I  kept  going--

I  added  more  paint  (brought  in  the  violet  color)--some  more  design  elements  in  the  tree,  flowers,  and  birds,  added  a  sun.  And  I  also  used  my  Prisma  NuPastel  chalk  sticks.  I  have  a  couple  different  brands  of  chalk  pastels,  but  again,  these  are  my  favorite  to use--just  love  that  rich  color!

Finishing  touch--putting  it  into  a  frame--

Some  more  watercolor  paper--and  some  more  painting--

lots  of  doodling  this  time--I  call  this  one  "Gossip  Girls"  : )   (I  always  wonder  what  those  birds  are  chirping  about  in  my  neighborhood!)

And  remember  I  said  that  I  had  lots  of  sketchbooks  with  my  ideas  inside--they  always  come  in  handy  for  when  I'm  looking  for  inspiration--

....and  more  framing....

.......and more  painting....

This  one  took  a  little  longer---struggling  with  that  face--but  in  the  end --all  good...

So  this  is  what  I've  been  dong  since  I  last  blogged,  and  oh  yes,  the  most  important  thing---we  have  a  new  grandson!

Anthony Louis  (Tj for short)--8lbs. 3oz.--born  on  April  26,  and  I  was  there  for  the  whole  thing--amazing!!  He's  a  little  doll!

Some New Art--A Small Step-by-Step Tutorial

Happy  New  Year  everyone!!  I  hope  that  you  all  can  take  the  time  for  whatever  your  passion  is  this  year.   Sometimes  it's  hard,  when  you  have other  obligations  in  your  life,  but  it's  necessary!   It's  the  best  way  to  start  out  any  day--what  a  difference  it  makes  for  that  day,  no  matter  what's  going  on  in  your  life  at  that  time!

And  that's  just  what  I've  been  doing  this  past  week--I  haven't  had  much  time  for  art,  (seriously--no  time  for  art--just  family)--but  I  DID take the  time  early  every  morning.

Got  out  my  new  Gelli  Plate  (that  I've  had  for  months),  and  started  playing--

...this  is  was  all  made  from  a  gelli  print,  except  for  the  stamp  in  the  middle.   There  is  a  bit  of  a  learning  curve  with  the  plate--probably  the  most  is  how  much  paint  to  apply  to  the  plate,  and  the  combination  of colors  to  use.   It's  a  bit  different  then  when  you're  painting  papers--you  don't  have  as  much  control  with  the  paint.   But  on  the  plus  side,  you  can  whip  out  those  papers  FAST!!

So  all  of  these  next  ones  are  a  combination  of  the  gelli  prints,  and  painted  papers--meaning  I  would  do  the  print  and  add  some  more  of  my  painting  on  top--I  just  like  playing  with  each  individual  paper--that's  just  me.

---yes,  this  is what  I  would  do  every  morning  last  week--just  a  few  papers in  the  morning--the  hardest  part  was  having  to  stop--so  glad  that  I  don't  have  a  regular  9  to  5  job  out  in  the  'real'  world.   Okay,  don't  get  me  wrong,  I  had  lots  of  fun  last  week,  but  I  missed  my  art  room  too--not  enough  time  in  the  day,  I  guess  : )

So  I  have  a  little  tutorial  to  show  you  how  I  used  some  of  these  papers--here's  the  finished  piece--

So  the  first  thing  I  did  was  decide  what  kind  of  surface  I  wanted  to  work  on,  and  I  chose  my  favorite--a  gallery  wrapped  canvas--basically  a  wrapped  canvas  with  deeper  sides  ( 1  1/2")  than  your  normal  wrapped  one.

The  papers  underneath  are  pages  from  a  wallpaper  book  that  I  have--I  was  looking  for  a  background  for  my  coffee  cups.

I  used  Matte  Medium  to  adhere  these  papers since  they're  fairly  thin--I  prefer  matte  medium  over  Mod  Podge,  because  it  doesn't  leave  any  film  over  the  top  of  the  paper (always  seal  the  top!)  and  it  dries  really  fast.

Next  I  made  a  pattern  for  my  cups,  and  decided  on  which  of  my  papers  that  I  wanted  to  use--

....and  after  making  the  rest  of  the  cups  with  my  papers,  I  collaged  them  on  to  the  canvas--

This  time  I  used  gel  medium  to  adhere  the  papers.  Most  of  these  papers  were  painted  on  a  110lb  cardstock  that  I  get  at  my  office  supply  store.  The  gel  medium  is  heavier  and  works  great  on  these  papers--a  good  tip--it  helps  when  you  wet the  back  of  the  paper  lightly  with  your  paintbrush  before  you  apply  the  gel  medium--it  makes  them  less  stiff  and  easier  to  adhere  to  the  surface.

Next,  comes  my  favorite  part--when  I  start  a  piece,  I  always  have  a  plan  in  mind,  but  then,  when  I'm  half-way  through,  my  muse  takes  over,  and  it  becomes  very  intuitive  for  me  (for  the  most  part).

I  started  out  by  shading  the  cups.   Sometimes,  I'll  use  more  paint,  or  graphite,  but  usually  I   use  the  Faber Castell  pitt pens  (on  the  left)  in  coordinating  colors.  I  love  them  because  they're  india  ink,  and  will  become  permanent,  but  you  can  smudge  them around  with  either  your  finger  or  a  wet  brush  for  shading  when  they're  first  applied.   And  also  for  this  piece,  as  you  can  see,  I   used  my  Prisma  chalk  pasels--they  soften  the  lines  and  really  bring  your  piece  to  'life'  with  even  more  depth  than  just  the  pitt  pens.   And  then  I'll  usually  add  some  more  doodling  or  marks  on  the  art.   And  I  always  outline  my  images  with  a  black  permanent  pen--my  favorite  is  the  Permaball  Pilot pen   that  you  can  get  at  Christy  Tomlinson's  Scarlet  Lime  shop  HERE.   It  writes  over  ANYTHING!

And  don't  forget  the  sides!

This  is  why  I  like  these  deep-sided  canvases--the  art  can  be  continued  around  the  sides  of  the  piece.

I  finished  off  by  adding  some  punched  out  dots,  using  my  wallpaper  pieces,  and  some  text.   I  like  to  add  some  words  or  a  phrase  to  most  of  my  pieces--and  yes--the  cupboard  door  handle--I  like  using  older  ones  that  I  find  at  garage  sales  or  flea  markets--the  older  the  better.

This  could  have  been  created  the  same  way  with  scrapbook  or  found  papers,  but  to  make  it  more  original--try  painting  some  papers (they  don't  have  to  be  anything  fancy  or  detailed  either)  and  collaging  with  them--definitely  a  one-of-a-kind  piece,  because  they  have  your  'signature'  on  them.

I'll  be  making  more  art  with  these  papers--more  to  come  in  my  next  post!

Angels Here

This  is  the  time  of  the  year  when  I  forget  about  Halloween  and  even  Thanksgiving,  and  start  thinking  about  Christmas--no  I'm  not  really  one  of  those  early  bird people  that  start  getting  ready  for  the  holiday  in  the  beginning  of  the  year--just  the  opposite  actually.   But..my  next  show  in  3  weeks  is  for  the  all  of  those  people  who  do  think  like  that--Christmas  in  the  Woods  in  Columbiana,  Ohio  (my  favorite  show!)

Last  year  I  was  thinking  snowmen--but  this  year--I'm  thinking  angels.   So  the  first  thing  I  did  was  get  out  a  piece  of  watercolor  paper  and  started  sketching--

...next--I  got  out  my  favorite  form  of  watercolor--my  neocolor  crayons  and  some  chalk  pastels  and  gave  her  some  color--

....AND  then...I  put  her  on  an  11 x 14  gallery  canvas  and  surrounded  her in  my  new-found  papers  by  Prima  ("Fairy  Rhymes")--

I  enjoyed  doing  this  so  much....that  I  did  it  again....

I  also  made  my  "guardian  angel"

and  last  but  not  least--what  else  do  I  finish  my  blog  posts  with--but  my  latest  box!

...but  I  still  have  angels  on  my  mind....

These Are My 'Journal Pages'

That's  what  I  like  to  call  them.   They're  all  on  watercolor  paper,  and  the  reason  I  call  them  that  is   because  since  I'm  just  working  on  basically  a  piece  of  paper (a  real THICK  piece  of  paper)--it  doesn't  feel  as  scary  to  me  as  a  blank  canvas,  and  I  seem  to  be  more  organic  in  what  I'm  doing.   If  I  don't  like  the  outcome,  these  papers  won't  go  to  waste--they'll  be  used  as  collage  paper.   I  ended  up  making  7  pieces......

....she's  a  result  from  my  class  that  I  took  from  Christy  Tomlinson--She  Art  3--this  very   cool  technique  of  suggesting  facial  features  with  shading--I  love  her  classes!

I  thought  it  was  about  time  that  I  painted  a  turtle  since  I'm  so  obsessed  with  my  real  one  : )

You  know--the  best  things  really  DO  just  happen--I  only  used  7  pieces  of  paper--if  I  didn't  like  how  it  would  be  going--I  would  just  re-paint  until  I  did,  and  since  this  paper  is  140lb  weight--it  can  withstand  anything.    On  all  of  these,  I  used  a  combination  of  acrylics  and  hard  chalk  pastels--Love  these  2  together.

So  here  they  all  are--

.....and  all  completed--

Ready  to  go  with  me  this  summer  to  my  shows--I   just  received  notification  yesterday  that  I  was  accepted  into   another  show  this  summer--a  BIG surprise--this  was  my  first  time  that  I  applied  to  this  one--I've  heard  great  things  about  it.    I've  applied  to  a  lot  more--still  waiting  to  here  from  them--these  shows  aren't  that  easy  to  get  into,  but  I'm  not  taking  any  chances--I'm  getting  ready  with  lots  and  lots  of  art--which  I  love  to  do  anyway!!

And  more  thing--what  do  I  do with  new  art  that  I  make?--ALWAYS  make  a  new  box!

29 Faces 10

I  decided  that  I  wasn't  finished  with  my  Day #2  Face--I  really  liked  her  so  I  wanted  to  put  her  in  a  frame.   And  then  I  found  this  frame  with  that  plain  old  white  matt  in  it,   and  I  knew  that  it  wouldn't  do--so  I  turned  it  into  my  own  style--

I  think  she  needed  those  poppies--I  really  really  like  how  this  came  out!

Wow--I  can't  believe  it's  day  10  already,  and  I  haven't  stopped--wow!

Want  to  see  more??--then  visit  THIS  PLACE!

29 Faces Day 8

Wow!  One  week  already  of  faces--time  seems  to  fly  even  in these  dreary  winter  months!

For  today's  face I  went  back  to  my  bristol  paper  and  pastels--

I  was  going  for  the  Art  Deco  look (one  of  my  favorite  styles),  but  what  I  had  planned  did  not  work  out  at  all,  so  I  just  covered  up  my  'design'  with some  collaged  roses--anything  can  be  fixed!  Now  she  has  a  vintage  30's  look  to  her--and  I  like  it!

To  see  more--visit  HERE--all  brought  to  you  by  Ayala  Art.

29 Faces Day 3

I  sketched  this  face  in  my  sketchbook, and  I  decided  to  go  with  pastels  again--I'm  liking  them,  but  I  don't  think  they'll  replace  my  love  of  acrylics.

I'm  glad  that  I  decided  to  do  this  challenge--now  I'm  wondering  what  'face'  will  I  bring  the  next  day.

If  you  want  to  be  one  of  the  participants  or  just  want  to  see  the  other  beautiful  faces (and  it  can  be any  type  of  face--doesn't  even  have  to  be  human!)  start  HERE,  and  then  click  on  the  Feb  2013  tab.

29 faces Day 2

So  for  today,  I'm  showing  another  face that  I  just  did  with  hard  chalk  pastels--another  one  from  my  Misty  Mawn  class--

This  week's  lesson  was  all  about  pastels  and  different  ways  of  using  them.   I've  used  pastels  in  my  art  before  but  never  exclusively--I  like  them  in that  they're  a  very  forgiving  medium,  but  also  that  makes  them  a  little  frustrating,  because  if  you're  not  careful  you  can  mess  up  parts  that  you  like  by  smudging--so  they're  not  my  favorite  thing  to  work  with.....but....they  give  you  a  great  result.

I  like  her, and I think  I'm  going  to  do  something  more  with  her.   This  is  on  a  sheet  of  watercolor  paper--so  I  have  ideas  in  mind--if  they  work  out,  she'll  be back--we'll see.

And  remember,  if  you  want  to  know  more  about  the  29 faces  challenge,  start  HERE,  and  you  can  click  on  the  Feb. 2013  tab  there  to  see  all  of  the  participants  and  the  links  to their  blogs--and  you  can  be  one  of  them!  (You  can  start  anytime!)
