My Painting Process From Start to Finish

In   a  bit  of  a  condensed  form,  here's  how  I  sometimes  go  about  in  creating  a  piece.  I  have  trouble  with  being  intuitive.  I  most  times  have  to  have  a  plan,  so  this  is  where  my  sketchbook  comes  in handy.  I  have  lots  of  them  now  filled  with  sketches  and  ideas  that  come  to  mind.  They  help  me  a  lot  when  I  need  a  little  inspiration,  because  they  go  back  years,  and  I  like  to  just  go  through  them  and  see  how  I've  progressed--much  like  an  art  journal.   Here's  how  I  start--

First  comes  the  sketch  to  which  I  draw  on  to  my  painted  background  that  I  made  on,  in  this  case,  a  wood  cradle  board.   The  only  real  intuitive  process  I  have  is  the  background--I  work  fast  and  just  add  colors  that  appeal  to  me  and  layers  of  different  marks  using  different  mark-making  tools  and of  course,  stencils.  I  use  a  water  soluble  pencil  for  the  initial  sketch,  and  once  I'm  happy  with  it,  I  go  over  it  with  a  Faber-Castell  black  pitt pen.

Next  is  when  I  start  to  paint  in  my  design--

I  made  lots  of  texture  with  this  starting with  my  first  background  layer  of  gesso.  I  applied  it  to  the  surface  fairly  heavy,  and  used  a  comb  and  credit  card  for  swirls,  making  sure  that  it  was  completely  dry  before  I  added  the  next  layer  of  paint.

Making Use of My 'Scrap'book Paper

Before  I  share  what  I've  been  doing,  I  just  wanted to  thank  you  all  for taking  the  time  to  come  and  visit  and  leaving  very  encouraging  comments  on  my  posts.   I've  decided  to  cut  way  back  on  my  computer  time  for  right  now.   I've  cut  back  on  blogging,  and  even  though  I've  been  visiting  blogs  (I  enjoy them  too  much  to  give  up),  I  haven't  taken  the  time  to  leave  comments.  This  is  a  very  busy  time  for  me  with  my  big  big  3  weekend  show  coming  up  in  September,  and  from  experience,  it  can  be  very  stressful  trying  to  produce  enough  art.

 

So  by  doing  this,  instead  of  producing  fast  art,  I'm  creating  art  that  I  really  want  to  make  and  enjoying  the  process  of  it.   At  first,  it  was  a  bit  hard  to  make  myself  get  off  of  this  computer,  but  it's  getting  easier  for  me  (it's  an  addiction : )   So,  needless  to  say,  I've  been  making  lots  of  art,  and  I  do  post  it  everyday  on  my  Facebook  art  page.   I  do  this  for  my  benefit,  because  I  like  to  have  one  place  where  I  can  refer  back  to  my  previous  art--to  see  how  I  made  certain pieces.   So  if  you  want  to  see  any  more  of  my  art,  you  can  see  it  there  for  sure.

 

So....now  I'll  get  back  to  what  this  post  is  about.....I  have  a  ton  of  bits  and  pieces  of  scrap  and  painted  papers  that  I  wanted  to  use.   There's  a  lot  of  ways  of  doing  this,  but  I  decided  to do  something  I  haven't  done  in  a  while.

 

 

I decided  to  make  some  art  with  puzzle  pieces.  I  always  pick  up  these   children's  board  puzzles  at  garage  sales--so  now  I  have  lots and  lots  of  them.   Some  of  them,  I'll   keep  for  Zoie,  and  I'll  still  have  enough  of  them--yeah,  I  have  a  lot!

 

The  first  thing  I  did  was  put  a  background  on  a  canvas--

 

 

I  made  this  with   watered-down   acrylics,  followed  by   alcohol  drips,  stamping,  and  added  chalk  pastel  highlights--I  really  like  this  look.

 

And  then  the  puzzle  pieces--

...the  puzzle  pieces  add  great  interest  and  dimension  to  the  canvas--a  little  time  consuming,  but  now  that  I've  budgeted  my  time  more  wisely--I was  able  to  make  these!   And  see  that  chair  that  they're  on?  That's  my  next  project--to  paint  something  on  it,  not  sure  what though--whatever  I  do,  I  hope  to  show  the  progression  of  it  on  my  FB  page--stay  tuned...
